One of the most complex yet straightforward characters of the series, Dean Winchester is a man of many similar facets that nevertheless make up a very enigmatic character. Above all else he is the elder brother of Sam Winchester and a monster hunter. It is clear that his personality has been deeply influenced by his father John Winchester, of whom he was arguably trained to be a successor. His love of wrestling, classic rock, old cars, beer, and the ladies is a mixture of his own personal interests and those influenced by his father, whom he arguably received the most one-on-one, albeit sporadic, attention from through their partnership on monster hunts. By high school Dean had fully embraced the Hunter lifestyle. When not battling demons--both internal and external--at first glance he presents himself as a faithful, capable boy-next-door that likes to have fun, make jokes, and relax with the Classic Rock radio station playing in the background, though beneath that external carefree attitude is a very calculating individual with an extreme desire to save and protect innocents. Much like a baby animal, once you’ve proven yourself a capable and trustworthy friend, you are automatically considered family, and as he stresses throughout the show, you sacrifice everything for them. His ruthlessness reveals itself when they or innocent people are threatened. Even despite this (!) he can be a very sweet guy, especially around children
From Episode 1 he has made his love of  clear, and the soundtrack further drives it home by playing classics or theme-appropriate tunes from the 70s-90s. Personally, I avoided using any songs that were directly used in the series because it felt like cheating (but if a song on this playlist turns out to have been used, there’s no helping it). Just putting classic rock songs is too obvious for me, so I included some contemporary music that still harkens back to the “classic rock” eras, from the early heavy metal to the 80s hair band: Nostalgia in living color. Not only that, but I’ve included songs with subject matter that fit Dean quite well despite not belonging to his preferred genre, if not simply for the sake of variety and greater depth in making this playlist. Then there’s also my attempt in trying to inject some of that “on the road again~!” attitude that Dean seems to almost have about him while him and Sam are traveling throughout the country.
As a Demon, Dean’s personality becomes the personification of his worst traits with only a sprinkle of superficial charm, rather than genuine warmth, to prevent the label of “soulless” from being applied with 100% accuracy. It could be argued that as a human being he has been to Hell and back so many times that his empathy as a demon has not been completely wiped away, only deadened. As Famine pointed out, Dean was already “dead inside” long before he transformed. His cynicism, sexual appetite, apathy for others’ well-being, habit of teasing and embarrassing others, and mean-spiritedness take center stage for the brief period that he was demonic. As such, the songs I’ve picked try to capture that acceptance of his “true nature”.
