You meet a better sort of bum in a marina.

1st of April 2024: I know, April fools day. However it was the day we chose to start to live on board our new boat. We had meticulously packed so we each had 30kg, as allowed by Qantas. This process took into account the things already on board, those we may need, those things we just wanted to take whether we needed them or not and those things we want to have just in case. Another 3 hour flight and 3 hour car ride. We hired a car for a week to be able to get to all of the shops and buy all of the stuff we would need. Mainly food and gas and fuel.

3rd April 2024: Paid a visit to customs as our customs form stated we were able to stay in New Zealand on Mai Tai until June 2024. We wanted to stay for the allotted 2 years each boat receives when they first arrive, but somewhere in the purchase this was changed to June. So we started the process at customs. We found out that having a foreign boat in New Zealand allowed us to avoid all taxes on any purchases. Wow so if we needed a new freezer @ $2500 NZ we would get $375 off. Not too shabby.

5th April 2024: Went to my first yoga class in Opua. So close to the Marina, I just walked about 10 minutes and the community hall was next to the car ferry. Great view of the BOI from the front door. Great class run by a lovely lady called Ines who was selling bananas from her tree.

We had to sort out our gas cylinders as they were foreign and we couldn't get them filled here in NZ. They didn't meet their high standard but fit perfectly into our cubby hole for cylinders in the cock pit. So on the last day before we returned the car we drove to Keri Keri where a cylinder servicing centre was only too happy to help. They said the cylinders were aluminium and worth about $400 each. They would be good for a few more years yet. Great news as we were thinking of just getting new ones. Back to Whangarie delivered the car, taxi to bus station, bus back to Opua, walk down the hill and now we are truly living on a boat without any other form of transport.

On the morning of the 5th our good friends from Bali were here on a cruise and we were able to pick them up and bring them to the boat. Still no sailing as we were waiting for a sail track installation. It was great to welcome aboard our first guests and they loved the boat. Ironically, they will be back next week on a different cruise, so we will see them again and go sailing.

While we we in Whangarie, the good guys from New Zealand Yacht Services came to check everything was ready for the sail track install. It just happened that they were able to get the boom off easily, remove the old track easily and so they decided to install the new track. We weren't even there. Job done and now we can go sailing.

11th April 2024: Extreme weather conditions saw us stuck on board for nearly 2 days and during the night the font hatch in the main cabin leaked. My pillow and mattress was wet and my enthusiasm dampened. So since we bought the boat, the sail track needed replacing, the gennaker was torn to shreds so a new one was ordered, the helm clutch break knob fell off and had to be repaired and replaced and now the hatch leaked. Luckily the boat came with spares and David re installed a new one and its water proof! yay!

15th April 2024: Peter and Diana arrived and we took off. We stretched our sails into nearly zero wind and had a fun day trying to make Mai Tai go without much help from the westerly. We picked up a mooring for $600 for 6 weeks in Kororareka bay, just off Russell old town. Beautiful spot.

18th April 2024: Went to yoga in Russell. First time David drove me to shore in the tender and went for a walk while I made new acquaintance with my muscles. Then off to Opua for a Rally meeting. It was extreemly informative and there are about 60 to 70 boats going between May and June. Some are going to Tonga, Tahiti, Fiji and Vanuatu. We are excited to go in 2025, but seriously need to get to know our boat first.

16th April 2024: Yoga again in Opua, washing and we got our yellow customs form! So David bought a fishing rod and some new lines and a custom step we designed so we can easily step up onto the roof when sailing. Looks great. Now we just need some great weather and we are off to explore the Bay Of Islands and catch a fish.

If you know me, you know I love a magical birthday celebration. This year was no different, but one thing I knew I wanted was peace, tranquility, and positivity.

For years many people had told me of - how magical Bali was, how they returned from trips spiritually transformed, or how they choose to uproot their lives and become expats there. Despite all of this, I took what they said with a grain of salt. With all the exceptionally wonderful claims, I rather see it and experience it for myself, for me to believe it.

So when my birthday was coming around in July, I began to entertain the idea of visiting.

Eastern Java, Part Two

I stayed in Banyuwangi for three nights. Being at the far eastern end of Java, one feels that the place is not central. And yet, much plantation business comes through, and numerous tourists as well, because of its proximity to Ijen and Bali. It also has nice beaches and surfing options. I mentioned before that I like the interior of my airbnb. The exterior was problematic in two ways, intrusive noise (from the mosques and the neighborhood sounds) and smells (from the open sewers running right along my bathroom - which wasn't entirely enclosed). The noise was fine, I slept with wax ear plugs. The smells got worse each day and I finally wondered if it was just ME that smelled toxic. But the interior was lucious, wood, carvings, comfy bed, mosquito netting (which despite its function is always pretty romantic, even for one sleeping alone). My kind host, Eni, served me breakfast the two mornings I was there for it. The first morning, I rose about 1 a.m. for a 2 a.m. pick up to drive to Ijen and hike for a sunrise over the volcano. One doesn't really enjoy doing it, rising in complete darkness, getting into a car, zig-zagging up the mountain, stepping out into the cool and wet (it was heavy mist and thick fog when we arrived at 4 a.m.). But there is a reward. Still, at Ijen, as opposed to Bromo, or even Kelimatu in Flores, the hike is physically demanding. Firstly, the incline is achilles-tendon-straining with every step. I almost felt like I would fall backward if I just stood up straight. At about 50 meters in, I was breathing deeply, sweating through the clothes and feeling amazed at how heavy my body felt. And we had a long way to go. Luckily, at 58, I'm in good enough shape to do it. But I also saw older and bigger, heavier people exerting themselves as well. And for those who can't or don't want to do it, you can hire three-men to take you up in a wheeled-chair with a cushy bottom. It's probably not that comfortable, but you certainly won't sweat as much. But more importantly, of the 50 people whom I saw being dragged up, only one or two had a smile on their faces. The rest looked like they would rather have been somewhere else, or simply not been looked at by those they passed. As we ascended, the daylight diffused through the fog. My guide, Wati, prayed to God to lift the mist, and hoped that I would be lucky. I guess she goes up three times a week - good exercise! Wati waved her hand over my shoulder and said, "If the fog wasn't here, we'd see 4 mountains. The daylight grew and the colors of the volcanic rocks came into view, reds, oranges, yellows. The greens of the vegetation on the steep hillsides improved. And the mist seemed to thin out a bit. I put my umbrella away. The temps were a nice balance against the internal heat. The reward for the hike is in cresting the ledge of the volcano and looking down into the turquoise water of the lake, which Wati told me was 200 meters deep (!). Steam constantly rises from one corner of the crater, where miners dig large sulfur chunks and carry them up 900 meters of steep volcanic ridge. Down there is a phenomenon called 'blue fire' where the water and steam and sulfur convene and glow in turquoise and smell like mustard gas. I didn't witness that because it's mostly a nighttime thing and we arrived just after sunrise. At Ijen, one is more inside the volcano than Bromo or Kelimatu (where you stand above looking down). So you feel that you are in a dead zone. There is no life on such a hillside. The rocks are dangerously sharp, and streaked white and black. One can easily fall to their death. So I stood back. The sun eventually rose over the ridge above the crater, and we began our descent. This is not much easier than ascending, and I have particular problems with my knees which cause me pain with each step. However, I moved slowly, more side-to-side than straight down and did fine, although my knees were fairly wobbly when it was over. We then went to a waterfall for a short visit and a refreshing swim, before I fell asleep in the car (a rarity) and then returned to my comfy bed and slept through most of the afternoon. Syaiful, my kind guide, picked me up around 4:30 pm that day for a visit to the beach and a nice grilled fish dinner. We had occasion to talk a great deal more this trip (I've hired him for three trips). So we ended up talking about family and our communities. He seems like a real pillar in his, a trusted and central figure, who was lucky that his wife rejected her first suitor (custom has it that a woman is obliged to accept the first offer of marriage). He leaves home for 6 days out of seven, and he says that this work is his passion. I know that such a contractual relationship is not a friendship, but I consider him a teacher and a friend. The next days were more casual, later starts. I had those lovely breakfasts at my airbnb. I wished I could have spoken more with Eni, as she was clearly an interesting person, with strong English and apparently carrying on with her parents' business in the kampung. It also appeared to me, from pictures hanging on the wall outside my room, that her father was a Dutchman (or at least a foreigner). We went to the Baluran National Park in the northeastern-most corner of Java. It's a strange place because the peaks which tower above the park are NOT volcanic. I can't understand how this would be so, but I think it helps to explain the equally strange landscape below those peaks. They call it "Africa van Java" because it's a savanna similar to any you would see on a safari in eastern Africa, Kenya, or Uganda. Grasslands as far as the eye can see. Thin, tall high-branching trees offering shade at distant intervals, buffalo, deer, and monkeys wandering the plains. I've certainly seen nothing like it in tropical rain-forest Java. At the end of the road through the savanna was a spectacular mangrove swamp and calm beach. One's head spins at the divergent realities.  Next I had a swim at a beach closer to Banyuwangi, with snorkel and mask and saw dozens of species of bright, big tropical fish. They were as interested in me as some of the people on land. I almost felt like they were protecting me, as they gathered about every part of my body, letting me swim, but hovering around me like a cloud. I saw how the folks at this beach were seeding a new coral reef, with various objects, some sculptures, some basic frames, some large hollow concrete balls. As a final act, it was very comfortable and pleasing. I thank Syaiful for putting together such an itinerary. He knows Java very well. The next day I had another breakfast at Eni's and then packed up for the return home. Syaiful and I shared our musical interests on the stereo, and I really enjoyed a tune by Akon called 'Mr. Lonely' a modern-day sampling of an old Bobby Vinton song about a soldier at war, updated to be a lost love song. He played other Indonesian pop-stuff which I enjoyed. The Indonesians are serious about their music. He also played me an album of Indian music. All cool. But the journey had to end. And it did, as I settled into another 6 days in Malang, to take care of my final business and loose end details before my final departure. But more on that in the next post. One month to go! Someday soon this will be over.

continuing to iron out my route particularly in europe. I've pretty much mapped out se asia entirely. I plan to hire a moped in Bali and travel that way but Indonesia is really ramping up their tourist laws so I might not even be allowed by the time I get there :(

I'm also planning for at least three workaways and some of the favs I've found are: a durian farm in West Java, cleaning beaches in Langkawi, maybe one in Cambodia, a party hostel in South Korea and hopefully a family stay in Japan. I also am definitely doing a week volunteering at an elephant sanctuary in Thailand but I'll be paying $500 to do that so it doesn't really count as a period where I can expect to not pay for board/meals.

BUDGET for se Asia is starting at $20-$30 (AUD) a day for around $800 a month. this will hopefully give me a little extra money for things like island hopping in the Philippines, bungee jumping and some theme parks (you KNOW a bitch loves a theme park). this budget will have to be pushed higher for Korea and especially Japan, which is why I want most of my time there to be workaways and also be more brief, maybe 2 weeks in both :)

I'll only be in middle east for about a month; 1 week in Pakistan, 1 week in Jordan and maybe 1 week in Lebanon and 1-2 weeks in Turkey with a couple days in Cyprus snuck in there. I really want a workaway in Pakistan, I've found one family in North Pakistan that would be amazing as staying in family home in Pakistan is on my bucket list aha.

I have all of Jordan planned out: few days in Amman, hire a car and drive to the Dead Sea for 1 night, drive to Wadi Rum for 1-2 nights and visit Petra for 1-2 days.

then I want to workaway in Lebanon. I thought about maybe doing one that helps refugees in the Syrian border but I feel like that'd be uhhhhh a kind of weird move idk I'll only be there for a week and I know nothing about humanitarian refugee projects, I feel like I'd be a hindrance and not there for the right reasons, so I'm going to do an eco hostel one :)

for Europe budget is much tricker, and my standard will be $50-$60 (AUD) a day for a monthly budget of $1100. HOPEFULLY I will be extremely conservative up until then so I'm not literally begging for food over there aha.

I would love to do workaways in Greece, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden/Norway, Italy and maybe France or Germany, but of course that's too many to dedicate so much time (workaways usually ask for at least 2 weeks but usually a month). so I gotta choose where I'll really really want to stay a while, which I'm thinking Scandinavia to see snow and the northern lights, and then in the south like Italy or France. definitely ones in Greece and Croatia though, gimme those beached nomnomnom. I also have a friend in Austria that I can hopefully crash for a few weeks to recharge djdjjsjs
