Okay so another WH hot take from me: Heathcliffs “dirty ness” is less an inherent character trait and more a socialised behaviour that is used as a tool to highlight class and race discrepancy. Hear me out. The same way we understand that Cathys “fancy dress” that she wears to get ready for the Lintons visit (the same one Heathcliff comments on) is not really about her wearing a dress (like what else were girls back then supposed to wear) but what the dress represents. The dress represents class, wealth and conformity, Heathcliff recognizes that by her choosing to wear this dress she is intact choosing those things. This is during a time where discrepancies were reduced to very simplistic terms: fancy dress=wealth and dirty clothes=poor. This is not to say things aren’t the same now but it’s more complex now: not everyone who wears a fancy dress or clothes is necessarily rich or of high class and not everyone who is dirty is necessarily poor etc there are more reasons as to why people may have either of these qualities that do not automatically qualify them to be rich or poor. So apply the same thing to Heathcliff and his dirty ness. As kids yes they would run around and get dirty but what’s kids DONT? That’s normal. However the real neglect happened when Hindley took over when Heathcliff really began sinking into the position Hindley gave him as he himself lost the desire to improve himself. This obviously worsened when Cathy stayed at the Lintons. When she came back his famous line of wanting to be dirty as he pleases is not because he genuinely enjoys being dirty but because it’s the only thing he can claim for himself and to have control over, it’s the only thing that separates himself from Cathy and her family, at that point being dirty to him as become synonymous to being like him. It’s a fair reaction that when everyone around him changing and telling him that the position he currently is in is not good enough his pride makes him hold on to being dirty. Being dirty is his only weapon at this point. But it’s socialised trait of his not some natural born characteristic. I haven’t seen a lot of commentary on this as most interpretations just write him off as a generally/innately dirty guy with bad hygiene etc which again I think is too much of a simplistic view of this aspect. And in terms of a modern interpretation it doesn’t make sense. A perfect example was in fanfic I read where being favoured by Earnshaw means Heath had his own room, bathroom etc and grew up under good care with good hygiene etc then when Hindley degraded him he striped Heath of access to a bed, bathroom, food etc to the point where Heath had no choice but to live in his own filth - perfect example of Hindley dehumanisation.
