Heliotrope no Koi by Mizuno Hideko (1969)
Tumblr media
What can I say? It is known that I am weak for Russian literature and character who run towards their ruin at full speed, so I had to do this Mizuno one shot too... Here is another story by Turgenev, like the previous First Love, to give you some feelings on this cold weekend. Heliotrope Love, was adapted from his Smoke, and I strongly recommend that you read it. Here are some parts that I loved, but that were sadly weren't included in the limited page count of the manga, so I'll leave them here:
‘But I can’t live without you, Irina,’ Litvinov interrupted, in a whisper now; ‘I am yours for ever and always, since yesterday.... I can only breathe at your feet....’
...As though I could complain when you love me, Irina! I wanted only to tell you that, of all this dead past, all those hopes and efforts, turned to smoke and ashes, there is only one thing left living, invincible, my love for you. Except that love, nothing is left for me; to say it is the sole thing precious to me, would be too little; I live wholly in that love; that love is my whole being; in it are my future, my career, my vocation, my country! You know me, Irina; you know that fine talk of any sort is foreign to my nature, hateful to me, and however strong the words in which I try to express my feelings, you will have no doubts of their sincerity, you will not suppose them exaggerated. I’m not a boy, in the impulse of momentary ecstasy, lisping unreflecting vows to you, but a man of matured age—simply and plainly, almost with terror, telling you what he has recognised for unmistakable truth. Yes, your love has replaced everything for me—everything, everything!
God I wish I could love someone like that/someone loved me like that.

DDL MangaDex
This manga was originally published in Monthly Seventeen's issues 30-36 in 1969. I must say all Seventeen manga might be just to my taste.
Thanks go to 5MENP for splitting Edelweiss with me, to phuji and shielshi, my dear Seldom gang, for making this project see the light of day.
And of course, thank you, Attolia, for giving me the push I needed to translate this. I've missed you <3

Finally. Arrived directly from Japan and there is the manga about Pink Floyd (which is the same as the magazine I already published). Ginetta approves: they even have the same colors!

Fire! and the first sex scene in shoujo manga
Tumblr media
No, this is not the first shoujo sex scene, but it is such a pretty and sensual page to look at.
While reading up on the history of shoujo manga, I have come across this piece of information countless times: The very first sex scene in shoujo manga was drawn by Mizuno Hideko in Fire! (1969). It was cool to know it, but I had to see... I kept my eyes peeled during my Fire! lecture, and here I present you my findings, and manga history..
Tumblr media
The page above with Aaron and Diana would be first depiction of sex in shoujo manga.
Tumblr media
We get yet another scene with Aaron and Marge.

And finally, we have intimate scenes of Aaron and Jewel. I thought I had seen things, but apparently, I was yet to see the bottom left panel in the second image.
It's incredible how those pages can look so symbolic, yet feel so realistic. And they don't come out of nowhere, they all make sense within the story, and contribute to Aaron's growth as a character. They have more to them than "aayyyy, first shoujo sex!".
tl;dr Everyone, just read Fire! Pray every day that it gets published in other languages.

Hatsukoi by Mizuno Hideko
Tumblr media
Today, we've got a special treat for older shoujo connoisseurs! "Hatsukoi," a oneshot by Mizuno Hideko, was first published in Deluxe Margaret back in 1967.
The original story behind this oneshot is quite something. "First Love" was written by Ivan Turgenev back in 1860, the story of a young man who falls in love with a charming young woman by the name of Zinaida. Unfortunately, not everything goes as planned... You can read the English translation on Project Gutenberg: First Love.
We discovered that this story is actually an autobiographical of events from Turgenev, which really adds a whole 'nother flavor to it. Poor Ivan...
You can download Hatsukoi here or read it online on Mangadex here. Enjoy!

i didn’t post a lot about what i did when i visited japan last year (aside from attending the tokimeki exhibition), but i did visit a lot of other retro manga spots as well, including the reconstructed tokiwa-so and the related shops in the neighborhood. in particular, i visited “tokiwa-so-doori oyasumi-dokoro”, a two-story shop and small museum, where they’ve reconstructed terada hiroo’s room in tokiwa-so, display a large number of signed shikishi from manga artists who have visited, and sell a large number of tokiwa-so merch, including amazing mizuno hideko merch and books!
Tumblr media
so obviously i couldn’t hold back and bought a bunch. center top is a self-published book containing autobiographical texts by mizuno, and it’s a great read particularly because mizuno was the sole woman at tokiwa-so and has a distinct pov on the happenings there, and also because she hung out with ishonomori shotaro and akatsuka fujio a lot, giving us insights that are different from the fujiko fujio-focused pov that many texts on tokiwa-so take.
the postcards on the left depict the life at tokiwa-so with adorable cats, and i had to buy the whole set but i’m especially SO fond of this one:
Tumblr media
akatsuka fujio, mizuno hideko, and ishinomori shotaro as cats, staring at ONE dried fish wondering who gets to have it!! such a cute moment, and probably accurate to the pretty poor lives the artists led at tokiwa-so (except ishinomori, who was super popular almost right off the bat).
another amazing thing is that the tokiwa-so sticker sheet (bottom right) was printed BY MIZUNO, BY HAND, on her HOME PRINTER:
Tumblr media
like, how could i NOT buy this!?!?!?
in general the reconstructed tokiwa-so and surrounding shops are amazing, and i’d recommend any fan of historical manga to visit. if you do go to the “oyasumi-dokoro”, also make sure to look up when you enter — the lampshade hanging right above you has been decorated by mizuno herself. amazing!!!
