Things that we’ve learned about Kaeya and Diluc from HS
Kaeya and Diluc write letters to each other
Kaeya thought Diluc wouldn’t reply to his letters but Diluc actually does
They call each other K and D in the letters (which is kinda cute?)
They’re always looking out for each other. They show that they really care, they really care a lot
Kaeya informed Diluc about everything while he was away, and celebrated when they finally got their revenge on the man who sullied their father’s death
Diluc wants to act solo but he knows there might be times when they have to join forces and doesn’t mind
Diluc has so many of Kaeya’s letters around his house that he has kept
Also, Kaeya has really good handwriting
Kaeya’s eye was wounded when he fought Diluc, but he was not blinded. He wanted to pretend that he was, but Diluc knows the truth
Meaning that Kaeya can perfectly see with his right eye and he wears the eyepatch for another reason
Kaeya doesn’t blame Diluc for the fight, he knows that it was bad timing
Kaeya’s family, the Alberich Clan, were not the original rulers of Khaenri’ah but they took over. Which means that Kaeya is really a prince in a way
His family wanted to revive Khaenri’ah but couldn’t. They still want to continue with their plans (They might be allies with the Abyss Order then?)
Kaeya only has a small paper that talks about his clan that he saved when his birth father tried to eliminate all evidence
Kaeya’s melancholic when he thinks about his Clan and his birth father
Kaeya misses the Winery and goes there frequently, he spent a few days there while Diluc was still away. Kaeya stayed in his old bedroom and all the staff is happy with him
Kaeya has kept some of the seashells they found when they were kids (I’m crying at this)

It looks like Kaeya keeps his important possessions in this secret compartment, including his letters from Diluc, the seashells they collected as children, an eyepatch and a relic from his past.
Hope this helps anyone who can’t play the event but want to be updated on the lore!! :D
EDIT: Added Diluc’s letters to Albedo and Alice!

okay so i'm STILL thinking about the hidden strife event btw. and the symbolism between diluc keeping the letters from kaeya out in the open where he can see them, and the fact that he kept ALL the letters
every single one.
do you think that while he was away from mondstadt, sheltering from the biting wind in shenznaya, he thumbed between the few letters he had and committed them to memory? do you think he sat there, with all the time in the world to think about what happened, and about what he could've done differently? do you think he took special care to not let any of his tears fall onto the letters, just in case the ink smeared and became unreadable? do you think that the second diluc got the chance to write back, he stared at the parchment for what seemed like forever, mind filled with words and apologies that refused to be written down?
how often do you think diluc doubled checked his mail after arriving back in mondstadt? how long did diluc stay up at night before finally writing "take care of yourself, instead." ?
and kaeya,,,
kaeya, who keeps everything close to his chest, hidden away in a corner only he knows. how often do you think kaeya slipped onto the roof of the KoF HQ before diluc had responded to his letters, his fingers gently tracing over the shells he kept tucked in a pouch. do you think he looked around every corner with the hopes of seeing diluc, only to be disappointed every single time when he wasn't there?
when diluc still hadn't returned, and yet he'd sent a letter anyway, how quickly do you think kaeya rushed to hide it away with his other treasures? how many times did he read that letter, committing it to memory while diluc did the same thing miles and miles away?
do you think, in that moment, kaeya finally felt hopeful?
anyways, i have a lot of thoughts about them now that i'm a little more coherent about that event (it took like eight months holy shit) (and i'm STILL mentally unwell??? wtf)

Every Letter from the Hidden Strife Event
Tumblr media
Below the cut are all the letters from the Hidden Strife event, in chronological (or close to) order. The full written text for each letter is included. Will contain some spoilers for the Genshin Impact comic but they are there only for context
Note: Due to writing out to letters, this post is very long! Warning for when you open the rest of the post.
The first letters follow Crepus' death - for those who have not read the comic, on the day of Diluc's 18th birthday, (or the subsequent day) while traveling with his father, Diluc and Crepus were attacked by Ursa the Drake. Crepus used his delusion to kill Ursa in order to protect Diluc, but the delusion backfired and killed Crepus as well. Eroch, the then investigator for the Knights of Favonius, ordered that the incident be covered up. That was when Diluc left the Knights. (Eroch also claimed credit for killing the Drake around this time) That same night Kaeya revealed his origins to Diluc which involved Diluc reacting violently and Kaeya getting hurt, recieving his vision in the process. The first letter is shortly after that, and is from Kaeya, and Diluc, still displeased, does not reply.
Tumblr media
A Letter With Beautiful Handwriting (I) To D: A Storm is brewing within the Knights of Favonius. Varka's inner circle is preparing to investigate Eroch and his henchmen, and it's looking increasingly likely that Eroch is about to get unseated from that high horse of his. You might not be too pleased to see this letter of mine, but I mean to get this news to you as soon as possible. You don't have to reply.
The next letter is likely from about the same time, and is sent from Alice, Klee's mother.
Tumblr media
A Tidily Written Letter To the heir of the Ragnvindr Clan, I apologize for sending this letter without notice. You may not remember me, but we've met a few times. We've met near the square, when I sat at the table adjacent to yours at the Good Hunter, and seen you in your tavern… You were always busy with a great many things, especially back when you were much chattier than you are now. You spoke cheerfully and often with you brother and friends then. It's probably no surprise that you did not notice me then. But I've always had my eye on you, child. I recall with crystal clarity how my little Klee once made a complete mess of your vineyard while she was trying to catch Crystalflies there… But you didn't get angry. In fact, you personally escorted Klee back and even gave her a few bottles of fresh grape juice. Now I think that might jog your memory, yes? Klee recently told me that she "hasn't seen that strange man with the red hair in aaages," so I decided to look into it out of curiousity. My deepest condolences regarding your father. In many of the stories I've been told, you are the model knight: proud, driven, a knight of noble character and lineage. But I know that you're gentler than you appear. If you weren't, you wouldn't have treated Klee the way you did. And since you helped my child out, I hope you won't mind if I treat you as if you were my own. Therefore, I sincerely hope that you will leave the dark place that you are presently in, and that you will not wallow in grief and remorse. Partings are the most painful things, but they also encourage us to grow. A bird that has lost the roof over its head will fly further than otehrs of its kind. Go out and see the world. That's the best course of action I can envision. Only by feeling, observing, and listening can your heart be healed. Parents all wish that they can accompany their children forever, and the skies, seas, and stars bear witness to that oath. Everything that was your father now finds new life with you. That which you will experience in this world may have been things that you father experienced once upon a time. I hope that the wind will bring you all manner of wondrous things in your journeys to come. In any case, keep your chin up, young child.
Diluc in return sends a reply to Alice, which can be found in Albedo's camp in Dragonspine.
Tumblr media
Letter Addressed to Ms. Alice Dear Ms. Alice, I must admit that when I read the opening lines of this letter, I was not expecting it to have been written by you. It seems that I may have indeed failed to notice you despite your presence nearby. My apologies for that. Regarding Klee, I have heard that you are an extremely powerful witch, so I suspect that Klee would have been just fine sans my presence. Even so, you sent me this letter, for which I am thankful. As you have said, traveling is my best option at present. I will go out and experience all that the world has to offer, just as you have suggested. My father's will shall find continuation through me. Klee is welcome to stay at Dawn Winery as a guest during my absence. Adelinde will prepare sufficient snacks and grape juice for such occasions. And if you don't mind, you are also welcome to drop by. I hope that you and Klee stay in good health.
At this point Kaeya finds out about Diluc's plan to leave Mondstadt, and is the first to send him a letter regarding it.
Tumblr media
A Letter in Beautiful Handwriting (II) To D: Even I was a little surprised to hear that you'd decided to leave on a trip. Jean wanted to write and try and dissuade you, but I advised her against it. As for Varka, I don't think he knows that about this. Otherwise, he'd have probably sat you down for a talk. If you'd like to leave, do it now. The less the people know, the less the goodbyes you'll have to say. Leave at night, too, so things won't be too saddening. Take care.
Diluc has started his travels around Teyvat at this point, when Grand Master Varka finds out and sends him a letter.
Tumblr media
A Letter With Rough Handwriting Diluc, Jean wrote to me lately with shocking news. If I don't miss my guess, she wrote to you too. Her sentiments are those of the Knights as a whole. Crepus was a good man, and I thought very well of him. It grieves me greatly to know that he met with such a fate. As for your defeat of the drake, the honors for that accomplisment should go to your father. I do not accept Eroch's theft of the credit for that deed, which was bought with your father's sacrifice. Stolen credit will not be accepted within the Knights of Favonius under any circumstances. I will not permit it. I have already given Jean the authority to punish Eroch with all necessary severity. The Knights will inform you of the results. I've heard that you've been taking some time off outdoors and may not be easy to reach, so there is no guarantee that my letter will reach you. As such, I'll stop here for now. If it does reach you, then I wish you good health and safety in your travels. Contact us if you need anything. I hope that falcon of yours will help put this letter in your hands. I mean, I don't write in person very often, you know? These may seem like pointless words to you right now, but remember: even the greatest of disasters must come to an end. Mondstadt waits for your return, and if you're willing, the Knights will always welcome you. (If you're not, forget I said anything, yeah?)
Kaeya also sends Diluc a letter, echoing Varka's message about Jean taking care of Eroch.
Tumblr media
A Letter in Beautiful Handwriting (III) To D: Some slightly bad news. Eroch won't be quite so difficult to bring down after all. The Grand Master's order to investigate has certainly dealt him a major blow, but I wouldn't call the problem "pulled up by the roots" yet. The matter's been haned over to Jean's jurisdiction. She'll take care of this, I believe. Eroch is an obstacle in her path, in any case. Just sit tight and wait for the good news.
A Dawn Winery staff member then sends a letter to Diluc. It was likely Elzer due to his authoritive status amongst the staff, but there is no confirmation there.
Tumblr media
A Letter With Clear Handwriting Master, Master Kaeya took leave and stayed at Dawn Winery for a few days. In a rare turn of events, he decided to stay in his original bedroom. He would pace around the grounds when idle, and even asked Adelinde to make him his favorite dishes. Ah, it really does take me back. I shall be honest with you, butu I was quite surprised to hear Master Kaeya say that he wanted to stay for a few days. We did not refuse him, however. We believe that even if you were here, you would not refuse him outright. Dawn Winery has always been a more quiet location, perhaps because all who stay here are rather peacable people. The house is made by those who live in it, and Master Kaeya's uncommon arrival did end up livening the place up significantly. I hope that you are doing well in your travels abroad. Everyone here at the winery misses you. May you remain safe and in good health.
Diluc sends a reply to Varka next. (This can be found in Jean's office in the Knights of Favonius Headquarters)
Tumblr media
A Letter Addressed to Grand Master Varka Dear Master Varka, You have my utmost thanks for your condolences and concern. My father would be pleased to have heard your compliments. I doubt that anything would have pleased himm more than to have the acknowledgement of the Knight of Boreas. I am presently traveling, andby a stroke of fortune, your letter has indeed reached me safely. If nothing goes awry, I believe that I will not be joining the Knights of Favonius. However, I will not forget my previous experiences. I will commit everything the Knights taught me to heart. May this find you in good health.
Around this time, Kaeya sends Diluc another letter.
Tumblr media
A Letter Beautiful Handwriting (IV) To D: Recently, a group of businessmen returned to Mondstadt. Word is that the reason for their return is a downturn in business. According to my observations, their employees are regulars at Angel's Share. These people can also be found out in the more dangerous parts of the wilds around the city. Now, a few of them were a little careless and even dropped some pages of their notes on the ground. I took the liberty of returning these sheets to the Angel's Share. You know, out of the goodness of my heart. I think they might have something to do with you, seeing as how they were there. I also noticed that their notes were written in code. Information brokers, perhaps? Or some kind of secret organization? Whatever the case, it took quite a lot of effort to see those blurred words with only one eye, you know? Don't worry, I'll keep this a secret.
Diluc replies to Kaeya for the first time we see. (This letter is found in a secret storage compartment on the roof of the Knights of Favonius Headquarters. The images containing Diluc's letters to Kaeya are compiled in one with the compartment details and will be at the end of this post, but the letter will be typed out below here)
Letter Addressed to "K" (I) To K: Message recieved. Thank you. Also, I suggest that you stop mentioning eyes in your letters. Don't think that I don't know that your right eye wasn't blinded.
Kaeya sends another reply.
Tumblr media
A Letter to Beautiful Handwriting (V) To D: I didn't try to hide it from you on purpose, you know. But I suppose you found out all the same, huh? I mean, not everyone who wears an eyepatch must be blind, right? Don't people also wear an eyepatch if they have a scar over their right eye? The long-awaited news is finally here. Now I'm going to bring a glass of wine when I go to watch Eroch pack his things and leave on his last day (good riddance, by the way). That should be fun, eh? I know you're not the type to do that sort of thing, but I am, so allow me.
Diluc then returns to Mondstadt and recieves a letter from Jean.
Tumblr media
A Letter With Elegant Handwriting Dear Diluc, Welcome back to Mondstadt, Sir. It has been some time since the incdient. We discovered that Eroch had betrayed us, and he has been punished severely. I hope this news will put your mind at ease. In other news, out people have discovered that the Abyss Order has stepped up its activities between Wolvendom and Stone Gate lately. Also - a mysterious individual that people are calling the "Darknight Hero" has suddenly started showing uup out of nowhere all around Mondstadt city. He typically acts in the dead of night, and his intentions are currently unclear. Please stay safe, and notify the Knights as soon as possible should you see anything suspicious. We will send support immediately. Whether you are presently in our ranks or not, all faithful knights will remember your contributions to the Knights of Favonius. May you remain in good health.
Kaeya sends another letter to Diluc.
Tumblr media
A Letter in Beautiful Handwriting (VI) To D: Oh my! No sooner did you get back than a mysterious character started popping up. I hear he's called the Darknight Hero. He has repeatedly fought off Treasure Hoarders and monsters in the Mondstadt area - and he's even attacked Abyss Order strongholds. So far, it seems like he is on Mondstadt's side, but the Knights of Favonius could never permit the existence of a vigilante. I get the deeling that the two of you would get along nicely. Why don't you find the oppurtunity to get to know him and give him some sage advice? You know, just so he doesn't get caught by the Knights?
Diluc replies to Jean's letter.
Tumblr media
Letter Addressed to the Acting Grand Master Dear Jean, Thank you for your concern, Acting Grand Master. It is as you say. That incident should no longer weigh heavily on my mind. Punishing Eroch for his malfeasance was the righ way to correct the Knights of Favonius's past mistakes. This is an immportant step indeed for the Knights. As for my own personal safety, you need not concern yourseld too much. The Knights of Favonius should focus their efforts where it counts by looking after those who need it most. May you also remain in good health.
Kaeya sends Diluc a letter as the Knights further their investigation into the Darknight Hero.
Tumblr media
A Letter in Beautiful Handwriting (VII) To D: Per standard procedure, the Knights of Favonius needs to take a statement from all relevant parties. Recently, the Knights of Favonius have recieved reports from a number of eye-witnesses claiming to have seen the Darknight Hero in the vicinity of the Dawn Winery. The Grand Master has assigned the Cavalry Company to this mission. As such, I will be paying you a visit in three days. He seems to think that our relationship can be improved if we are forced to talk in person. Don't worry, though. My lips are sealed. This will be nothing more than a formality. Anyways, three days' notice should be enough for you, I presume?
Tumblr media
A Letter in Beautiful Handwriting (VIII) To D: The appearance of the Darknight Hero has indeed bought the Knights of Favonius some valuable time during the Abyss Order's last attack. This helped Jean convince the Knights of Favonius to stop focusing on trying to stop him. This will decrease the limits on the Darknight Hero's actions, but this doesn't mean that his situation will necessarily improve. Objects with too honed an edge tend to be damaged more easily. You, I'm sure, are aware of the great dangers that come with acting alone. That said, I would advise against such a course of action.
Tumblr media
A Letter in Beautiful Handwriting (IX) To D: I heard that the Dawn Winery did not suffer any damage. Likewise, the Knights of Favonius only sustained minor injuries, and will recover quickly. However, an employee of a local merchant has gone missing, and their last known location just so happens to align with the Abyss Order's are of activity. The Knights have dispatched people to go to the rescue. Do be aware that the Abyss Order has become more dangerous as of late, even going so far as to organize multi-pronged offesives. Perhaps the Darknight Hero and the Knights of Favonius should team up. That might guarantee that things will go off without a hitch, hmm?
After the investigation is somewhat concluded, Diluc sends another reply to Kaeya.
Letter Addressed to "K" (II) To K: Thanks for the letter. Cooperating with the Knights has objective pros and cons, like two sides of a coin. I'm sure you understand that better than I do. No need to worry about my safety. Self-preservation is easy. Striving towards my goal is hard. Take better care of yourself instead.
Going to the Coast where the ley line is located, you can find some notes at the tent. These are from Diluc's informant who suggests he reach out to Albedo. (The informant is possibly Vile [or associated with her], who gets defensive if you talk to her behing the Angel's Share during the Hidden Strife event)
Tumblr media
The First Note It's been years since the ley lines last released such highly aggressive monsters during an anomaly. The Darknight Hero's timing was perfect. The way he lured the monsters a few time into the open to defeat them one by one… quite the strategy. And then he pretended to be seriously injured, luring out the Abyss Order's main forces and then meeting them head on. A truly magnificent counterattack. Still, this plan involved too many uncertainties. The Darknight Hero himseld even said that he can't afford to take risks like this every time. Getting to the root of the problem and preventing these types of ley line disorders from happening is the safest approach.
Tumblr media
The Second Note Ley lines hold many secrets. We ordinary people do not need to concern ourselves with the way they work. But since the Darknight Hero will be fighting Against the Abyss Order for the long term, it is in our best interests to gain a deeper understanding of them. I heard that the caption of the Knights of Favonius Investigation Team is a highly accomplished academic, but unlike Lisa, he is not especially close with the Acting Grand Master. We should be able to learn a few things from him without the Knights of Favonius finding out. Perhaps the Darknight Hero could ask him for input on the technical issues regarding the ley lines. I will deliver the letter to his camp on the mountain.
Albedo reaches out and sends a letter to Diluc.
Tumblr media
A Neatly Written Letter Dear Mr. Diluc, It is my pleasure to investigate the ley lines alongside you. As you know, my focus is on alchemy, so my knowledge of the ley lines remains quite shalloe, and I fear that I will only be able to share what little understand I have. According to many pre-existing documents, the ley lines can be seen as a medium for storing informamtion. Under certain circumstances, they can record activities that occur in the area around the. All this information goes through a recording and storage prcoess. After a certain period of time, they may be released once again by the ley lines. If I may be so bold as to make a guess, there should be a method to activate the ley lines. Those who grasp such methods can control the times at which ley line information is recorded and released. Judging from the runic symbols and some other clues, I surmise that there are particular members of the Abyss Order who may have a very small chance of being able to achieve this. If you believe that this requires further investigation, these entities may serve as your point of entry. I wrote a paper a few years ago in which I covered my brief foray into questioins concerning the flow of ley lines and other such topics. You will find a copy of this paper enclosed. I hope that it can help to clear up some of your doubts.
Diluc replies to Albedo next. (This letter is found at Albedo's camp in Dragonspine, near the letter to Alice)
Tumblr media
Letter Addressed to Mr. Albedo Dear Albedo, Thank you for the detailed explanation. I have read your paper and found it both enriching and easy to understand. It is rare a and well-written document indeed. I have written the relevant information down in hopes that it will be put to good use in the future. Guarding against danger is a very important skill. I will continue to keep watching over the Abyss Order, and use force against them where necessary.
We are now brought to the last day of the event, when we get a letter from one of Diluc's informants that led to us reading the other letters.
Tumblr media
A New Letter Dear Darknight Hero, the Knights of Favonius have stepped up the guard details throughout Mondstadt without making any major movements. The Abyss Order will not have noticed. I am scouting around Dragonspine. The monsters here are scattered and seperated. Clearly, they haven't been assembled by the Abyss Order. There are no signs of enemy activity in the south of Mondstadt either. If you can confirm that the other locations are also free of monsters, we will be able to conclude that the Abyss Order has nothing to do with the recent ley line disorders.
While caught up with the letters, there is a little bit I couldn't appropriately fit into the timeline. It is in a secret compartment belonging to Kaeya, which was where Diluc's letters to him were located. Here is the descriptions and other contents of the compartment.
Tumblr media
Mysterious Box in a Secret Comparment The objects in the box are all pretty old. One particular sheet of paper stands out. A piece of it has been burned away, and the remaining parts show signs of hacing been rescued from that same flame. Every line on this sheet of paper has a matching one right under it. From the handwriting, it looks liike a child wrote on this first before an adult stepped in, held their hand, and taught them how to do it a second time. The writing are as follows: "Remember always that it was the Alberich Clan, who did not have royal blood, who stepped in as regents when the strength of the one-eyed king Irmin failed" "Though we could not restore Khaenri'ah to life, we of the Alberich Clan should leave lives as those who blaze like fire, rather than those who wallow in the embers." If you flip the paper over, there are other words there. You reckon these must be annotations of some sort. "I saved this one memento from the fire 'Father' made while he wasn't paying attention. This was in violation of our principles. Our clan's affairs should never be recorded. For me, this sheet of paper cannot serve as any form of identification, and will not give me pasage anywhere. Now that I look at it, his handwriting was as grieving as a smoking ash pile. There is no way that I can write something like that, living in Mondstadt as I am." Moving the paper aside, you can see a cloth bag underneath it that conatins an eyepatch of significant age. A sticker is attached to the side, and the text on it reads: "Hah! to think that all that play-acting as a one-eyed pirate would eventually end with one actual wounded eye. I have never blamed Diluc for that. I suppose I must have been asking for it, telling him the truth the day my adoptive father died without expecting conflict to emerge somehow. He seems to believe that I really was blinded, though that's not the case. Well, I've fooled him for a while, haven't I? Might as well keep going." Two letters lie beneath the bag, all of which have "D" as their sender. The letters are in great condition, and there is a time written on the back. This is most likely the time these letters were received. You can tell that the words have been written in a strong but elegant hand. [See "Letter Addressed to 'K' (I)" and "Letter Addressed ti 'K' (II)] A small paper bag lies next to these two letters. It contains nothing but a few seashells. They have lost most of their luster. It is unclear how much time has passed since they were picked up.
Note: The seashells are mentioned in the Echoing Tales event from the 1.6 version of the game. In the event, Kaeya asks if Diluc wants to collect seashells like they used to when they were kids, to which Diluc is surprised Kaeya remembers that.

diluc, his past and present, and a pair of gloves
i like to think that diluc’s gloves play a greater role than just heat protection from his daily and knightly duties.
Tumblr media
note: this post was originally posted on jan. 9, 2023.
diluc’s default skin is his chosen outfit for his nobleman duties, for when he’s out to do his obligations and responsibilities as the current head of the ragnvindr family, the master of the dawn winery. on the other hand, his alternate skin “red dead of night” is a modified version of his uniform from when he was still under the knights of favonius. he wears this mainly during his vigilante work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
both skins represent the two current and main sides of diluc’s identity: diluc as the ragnvindr heir, and diluc as the darknight hero.
the bases of his clothes are quite similar (a coat, vest and shirt, pants, and boots), just in different colors. but what stood the most for me is the detail of his gloves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
diluc’s glove for his red dead of night skin is fully black. on the other hand, on his default skin, the top side of the glove is black while the palm side of the glove is fully red.
this made me wonder since plain colored gloves are most common to use when it comes to formal attires and yet diluc chose at two-colored pair instead of a plain black or red one. i began to revisit some of diluc’s lore from events and voicelines out of sheer curiousity.
during the hidden strife event, diluc has stated that he only kept letters from the past in case they prove to be useful in the future, and yet he has kept (and have recently read) kaeya’s letters from the said past, even when some of those letters were only out of kaeya’s concern for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
diluc also kept kaeya’s compensation gift even if it doesn’t match the mansion’s interior.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
during the weinlesefest, the traveler asked him regarding the voice from the wine bottle, that of which he responded with the following statement [regarding his late father].
Tumblr media
connecting all of these together, one could conclude that diluc knows the definition of the past and lives it through, but that doesn’t stop him from being sentimental about it.
diluc has a complex character which is sometimes (or maybe often) left unnoticed with all the running gags about his deadpan stare and remarks about kaeya and the knights of favonius.
he got his old uniform re-modeled for the sake of nostalgia but using it instead in accomplishing his newfound resolve after three years of solitary sojourn in search for the truth.

in his vision story, it was explicitly stated that as much as he doesn’t talk about his past, he also doesn’t deny it. he acknowledges that his past is a part of his present.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in this sense, i’m inclined to think that diluc’s gloves could’ve been his own way of remembering what his hands have committed during those years of his raging anger and loss, that his hands are both stained and that cannot be changed even under the guise of nobility and fame; it could be his way of admitting that his persona as the master of the dawn winery and the vigilante darknight hero aren’t two separate entities, but rather his acceptance that both personas, as well as his past self and deeds, are all part of the diluc ragnvindr that he is today.
Tumblr media
note: to be clear, the part about the purpose of his gloves is a headcanon. however, the analysis itself is my conclusion from the dialogues, events, and voicelines stated.

Tumblr media
The letters reiterated everything you ever thought, ever knew about him, and yet the strain in your heart wouldn’t go away. It wasn’t because you had read what you shouldn’t, he’d given permission, even left you alone so you could take your time. It wasn’t because of who they were from, all kinds of supports, friends, invested patrons in his life who reached out to him during the darkest time of his life. It wasn’t even the words neatly or hastily written on the parchment. It was the realization that for everything he thought he wasn’t worthy of, for every moment of this life, it solidified the pain and suffering he faced years before and the love that followed him even now.
The tears fell before you could stop them. Quickly, you covered your cheek with your palm, wiped them away so they wouldn’t stain the precious letters he had kept from the shadows of his past. You were looking into a precious part of him; a door had opened you never thought you’d be priviliage to, and though you were glad for the passage, your heart broke for the reason.
“So, what do you think of them?” Diluc’s voice drew you back from the blurry, unrecognizable script. With careful movements you placed the letters on the desk, neatly folding them closed. Your fingertips lingered until you willed yourself to turn and face the man waiting for your reply, but, as you looked him over only to see a change in his entire appearance, your fragile heart burst.
He was so different. Somehow he looked younger but the dark circles under his eyes showed his age. His hair, which he had done up into a high ponytail brought an energy to his normally muted appearance. The low hairstyle always seemed like a way to keep his hair back, to fade it from view, but now it was like he wanted it seen, wanted it known that it was as red as the heart that burned in his chest. You took a step closer, nervous to get a better look but intrigued by the new clothes he wore. Diluc was still himself but ...
“Is this from ... back then?” You asked, hand reaching for the piecing red jacket that trailed out behind him like a birds tail feathers.
“It is. Is something wrong?” He stared at you intently. Perhaps in his mind this outfit change wasn’t that big of a deal but to you it was a painful history you weren’t present in. A time and place you couldn’t have understood, one filled with suffering, loss. Was it right to get so worked up over it? “y/n?”
The feeling of his gloved finger against your damp cheek forced you forward, forced you to respond even though you didn’t feel like you had the right to. “Why - why are you wearing this again?” Your palms rested against his chest, the feeling of his breathing, the subtle beat of his heart, they were all so grounding so why did it feel like you were losing him. “A-are you ... leaving?”
Diluc’s brows rose in shock before they shifted toward concern. As if realization washed over him, he pulled you into a comforting embrace. “I do not plan to, nor did I intend to cause you worry.”
“If you need to go, if there is something you need to handle, I’ll go with you. I can help-”
“Now hold on-”
“You don’t have to do this alone this time -” Diluc pulled away, his hands slipped to your shoulders so he could keep you steady but still look at you. Searching your eyes he opened his mouth to speak but you cut him off with a declaration you used sparingly. “I love you.” The tears falling from your eyes and the sudden choice of words made him pause. It wasn’t like he hadn’t heard you say those three, powerful words to him before, but right now they meant more than a passing phrase. “I love you, and what I learned from these letters is that you are loved by so many, that you are deserving of that love by each one of them. You may not see it, or feel like you are worthy of it, but it’s true --”
It was getting harder to speak. The strain in your voice, the tightness of your grip on the clothes that were so unlike him. The dread of losing him or not ever having him to begin with poured out of you like an uncorked barrel.
“No matter what lies ahead of you, I hope you will rely on those around you, that you’ll rely on me, because I can-can’t -- I can’t --” Diluc pulled you against him so tightly it lifted you off the ground. His hand pressed against the back of your head, his arm tensed as it held you close and you pressed your face into his shoulder to stifle your tears.
“I won’t.”
“You can’t promise me that...”
Diluc pressed his face into your hair, he took a deep breath before leaving a lingering, intimate kiss against you. When he was ready, he spoke again, “The world is dark, I know this all too well, and though I can’t promise to do everything you may ask of me,” He leaned back and subconsciously you did the same. Diluc’s finger pushed against your chin so he could look at you, “As long as I breathe, no matter how far I go, I will return to you. This you have my word.”
The tears wouldn’t stop but you didn’t mind them much now that they were caught against his fingers. You knew he had the strongest convictions, as he’d told you before, he wasn’t known for being a passivist in most any cases.
“... fine, but only because you are taking me with you.”
“y/n ...”
Diluc’s hands dropped to his side but were too slow to catch you from making your way toward the stairs. You weren’t the best fighter, but you knew your way around enough to keep pace with him. “You promised. Anyway, how else am I going to ensure you come back safely?”
“-- what makes you think I’m bound to leave in the first place?”
“Hello ...” you pointed at his outfit from over the railing of the upper floor. He could have chased you, could have stopped you, but he knew better than that. You brushed your cheeks and fixed your clothes, but before you slipped into your shared bedroom you stared him down not caring the slightest bit that his arms were crossed and he was giving you ‘the look.’
“Give me five minutes. Leave and I’ll chase you down, Ragnvindr.”
“As you wish.” Diluc submitted after a deep sigh.
If he was adamant about keeping the world safe on his shoulders alone, you could certainly support one till death do you part.

WAIT HOLY SHIT
HOLY SHIT!?
THERE’S MORE?!
THERE’S ACTUALLY IMPORTANT KAEYA LORE HERE?
KHAENRI’AH LORE!? ALBERICH LORE???
They say the Alberichs are not of royal blood (RIP Prince Kaeya theories?) BUT, they serve as substitutes of sorts (so he’s actually a Prince which is it??)
We see Kaeya for the first time ever talk about his birth father and his Clan. He doesn’t have many things about them because he had to burn them, he sounds a bit sad thinking about that...
And.... we get how Kaeya ACTUALLY lost his eye?!
(EDIT: He didn’t apparently! Excuse me because I read it really fast! What the says is that he was wounded but he’s not blinded and can see, and Diluc knows that too. I’m really sorry because I interpret it wrong at first)
I’m actually crying here. THE SEASHELLS. THAT THEY PICKED WHEN THEY WERE CHILDREN PROBABLY. ARE IN THE BOX WITH THE LETTERS.
PLEASE GO TO THE ROOFTOP OF THE KNIGHTS OF FAVONIUS TO SEE THIS
ALSO, after the first Diluc cutscene make sure to step out the mansion and look around. You can find Kaeya talking to Adelinde!

Translating Kaeya’s Conversation with Adelinde at Dawn Winery in Hidden Strife
I’ve had this in my drafts for a while. Exactly what it says on the tin, it’s the hidden dialogue in Hidden… Strife… Wait a minute--
Official Chinese, my translation, official translation, and translation notes.
.
Official Chinese
My English Translation
Adelinde: Good to see you, Master Kae— Captain Kaeya.
Adelinde: Has something urgent come up for you to suddenly visit today?
Kaeya: How formal of you to say that, Miss Adelinde.
Kaeya: The Knights have received another eyewitness account of the “Darknight Hero”. Although the witness didn't quite see where the suspected Darknight Hero was heading towards…
Kaeya: Well, I’ve always had the feeling that the suspect should be in the Dawn Winery area.
Adelinde: Is that so? Captain Kaeya and the Darknight Hero never appear at the same time. And while Captain Kaeya often appears at the Dawn Winery, so does the Darknight Hero.
Adelinde: So, can I assume that Captain Kaeya is the Darknight Hero in question?
Kaeya: Hahaha, such logic! So the famed Darknight Hero is me after all!
Adelinde: Apologies, Captain Kaeya, but the Dawn Winery is having a fire safety inspection today.
Adelinde: Please come back another time.
Kaeya: Come now, at least lemme stay for dinner out of courtesy?
Kaeya: Man, but it’s true I have other desk work to do today…
Kaeya: Tell you what, please pass the message to Diluc—security zones have already been drawn. Citizens shouldn’t be able to detect them, and the other party wouldn’t immediately notice them either.
Adelinde: Captain Kaeya’s words are complicated as always… A humble maid such as I certainly wouldn’t be able to understand them.
Adelinde: Master has gone with his business partners to discuss business, so I don’t know exactly where they are either.
Adelinde: When he returns, I’ll relay your message to him as-is. As for whether the hidden meaning will get across properly, that I can’t guarantee.
Kaeya: Is that so? It’s a secret code we’ve been using ever since we were young. If he can’t understand, then that’s truly a life wasted.
Kaeya: Anyway, does the Winery have any new products lately? I might as well buy some fine wine since I’m already here.
Adelinde: Captain Kaeya sure knows how to tell jokes. I’m sure you know we don’t sell products here?
Adelinde: But in any case, thank you for your visit. .
Official English Translation
Adelinde: Hello, Master Kae— Ahem, I mean Captain Kaeya.
Adelinde: I don't believe we were expecting you. Has something urgent come up?
Kaeya: Oh, Adelinde, don't be such a stranger, hehe.
Kaeya: The Knights of Favonius have received word of another sighting of the Darknight Hero. Now, the witness wasn't able to see where the suspect was headed, however...
Kaeya: I just have a gut feeling that he's in the Dawn Winery area.
Adelinde: Really? What can I say, Captain Kaeya... You and the Darknight Hero have never been seen in the same place at the same time, and you often show up at the Dawn Winery — just like the Darknight Hero.
Adelinde: So is it safe to say that... you are the Darknight Hero?
Kaeya: Hahaha, now that you mention it, it makes sense. I almost can't believe it — I am the legendary Darknight Hero!
Adelinde: I'm sorry, Captain Kaeya, but the Dawn Winery is having a fire safety inspection today.
Adelinde: You'll have to come back another day.
Kaeya: Seriously? Shouldn't you at least ask me to stay for dinner, as a courtesy?
Kaeya: *sigh* Then again, I do have a pile of admin work waiting for me today...
Kaeya: In that case, please pass a message on to Diluc for me. Tell him that the hazard zone has been established, the public shouldn't notice anything, and the enemy is unlikely to detect it right away.
Adelinde: Captain Kaeya, your words are as profound and enigmatic as ever. I'm just a maid, none of that means anything to me.
Adelinde: Master is currently out at a business meeting with his commercial partners. I don't know where they are exactly.
Adelinde: I will pass your message on to him word for word when he gets back, but I can't guarantee that the meaning behind the words will be fully conveyed.
Kaeya: Oh? But these are code words he grew up using. If he doesn't understand them... then perhaps it was a wasted childhood.
Kaeya: Oh, by the way, is there anything new at the Winery? While I'm here, I'd like to pick up some choice wine to take home.
Adelinde: Captain Kaeya, you are too funny. You know we don't do retail.
Adelinde: Still, thank you so much for visiting.
.
Translation Notes
Adelinde repeating “Captain Kaeya” and “Darknight Hero” multiple times
“凯亚队长和暗夜英雄没有同时出现过,凯亚队长经常出现在晨曦酒庄,暗夜英雄也一样。所以,凯亚队长就是暗夜英雄,我可以这么认为吗?”
“Captain Kaeya and the Darknight Hero don’t appear at the same time. Captain Kaeya often appears at the Dawn Winery, and so does the Darknight Hero. So, Captain Kaeya is the Darknight Hero. Can I interpret it like this?”
(Unless Adelinde is trying to fix her mistake of accidentally calling him “Master Kaeya” by referring to him as “Captain Kaeya” excessively?)
不是吧 (búshìba / bu2shi4ba5)
Literally speaking it’s closer to an exasperated “No!” but it means something more like “Come on!” or “Come now!” the latter of which sounds a lot like something Kaeya would say.
警戒区 (jǐngjièqū / jing3jie4qu1)
警戒 is a verb that means to be on one’s guard or to prepare for emergencies but 区 means zone or area, so the word together means security zone.
高深难懂 (gāoshēn nándǒng / gao1shen1 nan2dong3)
Two words that both mean difficult to understand. People don’t usually say this and instead say 高深莫测, a proverb.
暗语 (ànyǔ / an4yu3)
Literally dark language. It means secret code.
那可真是白活了 (nà kě zhēn shì baí huó le / na4 ke3 zhen1 shi4 bai2 huo2 le5)
Literally Then that’s truly a life wasted. 白活 is used to mean someone has lived a life without meaning or happiness.
Alternatively it could also mean to work without getting paid, but that doesn’t seem to be the context here.

Haven’t yet seen a transcription of Diluc’s replies to the letters he got (excluding his replies to Kaeya)... so here’s one. (spoilers under the cut)
Letter Addressed to Grand Master Varka
Dear Master Varka,
You have my utmost thanks for your condolences and concern. My father would be pleased to have heard your compliments. I doubt that anything would have pleased him more than to have the acknowledgement of the Knight of Boreas.
I am presently traveling, and by a stroke of fortune, your letter has indeed reached me safely. If nothing goes awry, I believe that I will not be joining the Knights of Favonius. However, I will not forget my previous experiences. I will commit everything the Knights taught me to heart.
May this find you in good health.
Letter Addressed to the Acting Grand Master
Dear Jean,
Thank you for your concern, Acting Grand Master. It is as you say. That incident should no longer weigh heavily on my mind. Punishing Eroch for his malfeasance was the right way to correct the Knights of Favonius’s past mistakes. This is an important step indeed for the Knights.
As for my own personal safety, you need not concern yourself too much. The Knights of Favonius should focus their efforts where it counts by looking after those who need it most.
May you also remain in good health.
Letter Addressed to Mr. Albedo
Dear Albedo,
Thank you for the detailed explanation. I have read your paper and found it both enriching and easy to understand. It is a rare and well-written document indeed. I have written the relevant information down in hopes that it will be put to good use in the future.
Guarding against danger is a very important skill. I will continue to keep watching over the Abyss Order and use force against them where necessary.
Letter Addressed to Ms. Alice
Dear Ms. Alice,
I must admit that when I read the opening lines of this letter, I was not expecting it to have been written by you. It seems that I may have indeed failed to notice you despite your presence nearby. My apologies for that.
Regarding Klee, I have heard that you are an extremely powerful witch, so I suspect that Klee would have been just fine even sans my presence. Even so, you sent me this letter, for which I am thankful.
As you have said, traveling is my best option at present. I will go out and experience all that the world has to offer, just as you have suggested. My father’s will shall find continuation through me.
Klee is welcome to stay at Dawn Winery as a guest during my absence. Adelinde will prepare sufficient snacks and grape juice for such occasions. And if you don’t mind, you are also welcome to drop by.
I hope that you and Klee stay in good health.
Bonus: Kaeya’s box
Mysterious Box in a Secret Compartment
The objects in the box are all pretty old. One particular sheet of paper stands out. A piece of it has been burned away, and the remaining parts show signs of having been rescued from that same flame. Every line on this sheet of paper has a matching one right under it. From the handwriting, it looks like a child wrote on this first before an adult stepped in, held their hand, and taught them how to do it the second time.
The writings are as follows: “Remember always that it was the Alberich Clan, who did not have royal blood, who stepped in as regents when the strength of the one-eyed king Irmin failed. Though we could not restore Khaenri’ah to life, we of the Alberich Clan should lead lives as those who blaze like fire, rather than those who wallow in the embers.”
If you flip the paper over, there are other words there. You reckon these must be annotations of some sort.
“I saved this one memento from the fire ‘Father’ made while he wasn’t paying attention. This was in violation of our principles. Our clan’s affairs should never be recorded.
“For me, this sheet of paper cannot serve as any form of identification, and will not give me passage anywhere. Now that I look at it, his handwriting was as grieving as a smoking ash pile. There is no way that I can write something like that, living in Mondstadt as I am.”
Moving the paper aside, you can see a cloth bag underneath it that contains an eyepatch of significant age. A sticker is attached to the side, and the text on it reads:
“Hah! To think that all that play-acting as a one-eyed pirate would eventually end with one actual wounded eye. I have never blamed Diluc for that. I suppose I must have been asking for it, telling him the truth the day my adoptive father died without expecting conflict to emerge somehow. He seems to believe that I really was blinded, though that’s not the case. Well, I’ve fooled him for a while, haven’t I? Might as well keep going.”
Two letters lie beneath the bag, all of which have “D” as their sender. The letters are in great condition, and there is a time written on the back. This is most likely the time these letters were received. You can tell that the words have been written in a strong but elegant hand.
*Diluc’s replies have been transcribed by other people so I won’t write them here I’m too lazy for that
