Concept art for the legendary hero, Herakles, and his beloved companion, Iolaus.
Designing and drawing these two was a lot of fun. For my take on Herakles’ iconic lion skin I wanted the head of the lion to be really big and I didn’t want it to drape over his head or shoulder as it’s often depicted. I got the idea to drape it over his chest from Spider-Man villain, Kraven the hunter, who wears a vest with a lion’s face. I also wanted the lion’s mane to drape over his back like a cape to really hammer home those superhero vibes.

Jedi were inspired by samurai (among other cultures) and this is wild.
The expectation of them to stop fucking reminds me of the expectation of breaking the training bond 🤔

It’s also similar to the Erastes/Eromenos of ancient Greek warrior culture.

Text version after the cut
As the samurai expanded their influence, they brought nanshoku out of the monasteries and into the cities. In their version, called wakashudō, prepubescent boys would be apprenticed to an older man. He would learn martial arts, life skills, and, if the boy agreed, be the man's lover until he became an adult. This was formalized as a "brotherhood contract," according to Leupp. It was considered to be an exclusive relationship, though many a drama is known to have come about due to the cheating of one party on the other.
According to Gregory Pflugfelder, "the idea was that this wakashudō relationship should have a 'mutually ennobling effect' on the pair. They were expected to 'assist each other in feudal duties in honor-driven obligations such as duels and vendettas. Although sex between the couple was expected to end when the boy came of age, the relationship would, ideally, develop into a lifelong bond of friendship. At the same time, sexual activity with women was not barred (for either party), and once the boy came of age, both were free to seek other wakashū lovers."
It seems that the wakashudō relationship was "'something both agreeable and disagreeable' because 'to throw away ones life [for one's male lover] is the ultimate aim of shudō. Otherwise, it becomes something shameful. But then one has no life to give in service to one's lord—so it is both agreeable and disagreeable.'"

The Thebans believed gay warriors fought better in order to impress and protect their lovers. If a lover fell during a battle, his partner would fight even harder to avenge his death.
Three thousand years ago in Ancient Greece, being gay or lesbian was not a crime. In fact, in certain situations, the Greeks even encouraged homosexual relationships.
Young boys exchanged romantic favors for the knowledge provided by their older tutors. Fathers would pray to the gods for their sons to be attractive because it meant a better mentor. Such relationships lasted until the young boys reached adulthood.
Soldiers would form romantic relationships with one another to boost their morale.
[...]
The members of the Sacred Band of Thebes were romantic partners. They called an older partner the erastes (‘lover’) and a younger one the eromenos (‘beloved’). Each pair exchanged sacred vows at the temple of Iolaus, the lover of Heracles.

How obvious is this inspired by Iolaus from Hercules the Legendary adventures? lmao. Does it matter??? Lets be real, the main reason I was inspired to start my own story is cause I wanted him as MAIN. 😝 (Design for OG Iolaus x heracles story)
