My Voice: Netflix’s “Dead End: Paranormal Park” is a Binge-Worthy Gem
Tumblr media
July 1, 2022
I watched the entire first season of Netflix’s “Dead End: Paranormal Park” in one sitting. I wasn’t planning on doing so but my friends have recommended it non-stop and I thought I’d give it a go. They were absolutely correct in saying I’d love it. The show features the adventures of Barney Guttman, a young adult exploring the freedom of moving away from family. His coworker Norma Khan, and his dog Pugsley. (Within the first episode Pugsley gains the ability to speak.)
Tumblr media
The show mainly takes place at the theme park “Phoenix Parks”, a park dedicated to the celebrity Pauline Phoenix that houses five separate ‘parks’ as one. (Imagine a sinister Dollywood.) Barney and Norma both want a job at the theme park. Norma because this is her special interest and Barney because he wants to move out.
They go to the haunted house attraction modeled after the “Dead End” house from one of Pauline’s shows. A demon named Courtney interviews the two of them, both becoming quickly aware that something suspicious is happening. A demon king, Temeluchus, shows up. The interview was a ploy to get him a human to possess. He chooses to possess Barney but his dog Pugsley jumps in between to save him, causing the demon to take over him instead. Courtney and the other demons seal the soul into Pugsley. He runs off but thanks to Norma’s quick thinking, and Barney’s passion, they semi save Pugsley. Instead of being a normal dog he now shares his body with the demon. Both Norma and Barney got a job as security at the park and Barney moves into the haunted house.
Tumblr media
In episode two we learn Barney is trans. It is important to note he is voiced by a trans voice actor! Barney is gay and Norma is “attracted to all genders” so assumed to be bi or pan. Throughout the series we see Norma is neurodivergent and, fun fact, was accidently written experiencing autism. The show’s creator Hamish Steele sought out diagnosis after learning that people he worked with didn’t find this character of his relatable, even though he made her similar to himself. He was then diagnosed with autism!
https://x.com/hamishsteele/status/1537768022961692672?s=20
The show is amazing, with a wonderful style, great voicing, and a script full of fun and mystery. It instantly joined my list of all time favorites. Do yourself a favor and watch it, even if you don’t normally watch cartoons. I can’t recommend it enough!

Norma Khan has autism!
This is: canon!
Tumblr media
Norma shows a plethora of autistic traits, such as:
•Sensory issues
•Anxiety
•Bluntness
•Difficulty with social cues
•Special interests
In the context of the story:
Norma got a job at Phoenix Parks, an amusement park based on Pauline Phoenix, an actress whose movies Norma has a special interest for. Her autism takes center stage in multiple episodes, such as in season 1 episode 3, where she experiences a panic attack due to over stimulation.

I just watched the first episode of Dead End: Paranormal Park! Really loving the horror and eerie, supernatural tone, similar to Gravity Falls and The Owl House but with this classic horror movie/ghost story/haunted amusement park aesthetic.
I relate to Norma so freaking much. Where has this autistic representation been all my life? “I’m bad with names! [is informed that she sees Barney basically every day] I’m bad with - faces!” was hysterical. I like that she’s consistently clever, with big moments like figuring out the solution and small moments like taking the shorter staff path to get ahead (in practical disregard of artificial social custom), but is tripped up by getting fixated and not processing or acknowledging deviation from her framework of how things work or should work, like not noticing that they’re being used as prospective hosts of demon possession in an arcane ritual by actual demons. I’ll admit I’m worried about the combination of how clearly shady this Pauline Phoenix is - she looked like some kinda ghost at the end of that welcome video and Barney saw a glimpse of that same sickly green glow in the haunted mansion, and there were all those missing posters of her lookalikes - and her being Norma’s special interest that she’s apparently had for fifteen years (basically her whole remembered life) and that with is a huge source of joy, confidence, wonder and contentment in an anxiety-inducing world. Like, special interests are inherently Big Deals but with how stressful, confusing and downright traumatic neurotypical society can be for autistic people, they can become Massive Deals. Pauline and her career alone have kept Norma going for a decade and a half, as she doesn’t appear to have much if any experience with friendship. I don’t want a horrible experience with the supernatural stuff at the park to ruin that for her. To shatter the escapism of that special interest. And hurt way more than it never being real in the first place.
Anyway! Courtney is a chaos gremlin and I love her. I am very intrigued about her backstory; she says she wants to go “back” home so she was originally in Hell, but has somehow been banished presumably forever unless she can get a powerful demon to revoke it. How does a creature literally born of evil get banished from Hell? Maybe by… exposing that she has goodness or at least the capacity for it deep down? Or was it just an act of spiteful cruelty on the banishing authority’s part, as would be characteristic of demons, with her herself doing little to nothing to ‘earn’ it? Her horns stick out to me. They are not naturally in that shape, they were cut. Who cut her horns and why? Is it a symbol of her banishment? Aren’t the cuffs enough for that? Is it purely superficial damage to mark her as an outcast or hurt her emotionally or does removing some of her horns inhibit her demon power?
Barney is just a sweetheart. He’s great. His patience, kindness, levelheadedness, sincerity, openness and caution balance the intense, awkward Norma and mysterious, irreverent Courtney’s quirks out well and he’s a solid everyman ‘as new to the world as the audience’ protagonist. The others are gonna need his good social skills, I can tell. The casual trans rep is cool too… though the undercurrent of tension around his family, especially regarding his grandmother, that hints at more serious explorations of it to come. I mean, he just doesn’t go home at the end. He’d rather sleep in a prop coffin in a theme park replica of a movie set replica of a dungeon than in his own house. There are definitely issues there. He’s going to have to face the music about that later.
In conclusion, can’t wait to continue this show.

Day 30. Summer Ends
Only a week late. Could've been worse?
Anyways, I think there's something extremely interesting to explore in the dynamic between Barborah and Norma
The CEO’s office was an intimidating room. It was still soaked through with the ineffable air of Pauline Phoenix, and just standing there was enough to give Norma goosebumps. There were no ghosts in this room, but the careful gaze of the current boss was haunting enough on its own.
"It's your last day right?" Barborah asked, a copy of Norma's contract laid out in front of her on the dark wood desk.
"Yes ma'am."
"You've got school in the off-season?"
"Yes ma'am."
"I see." The woman flipped through the pages of the cunningly crafted Phoenix Parks employee NDA. "You realize you can't speak to anyone about this?"
"I know what I signed up for."
"You might've been the only one." In many ways, she was more intimidating than Pauline. The movie star was like a viper, lying in wait to strike and spread her poison. Barborah was sturdy, an apex predator, sure of her strength and endurance. There was no trick to it at all.
"Despite all this crap you've pulled, I admit you're my best employee."
"I am?" Reflexively, she took a step back when her boss roared with laughter.
"Believe me, kid, I'm not the one to dish out empty praise." She walked from behind the desk and leaned back on it. "You've got that special something. I know it very well, that spark." Her shoulders relaxed a little, and she was looking at her with something almost like affection. "You remind me of myself."
"Oh," Norma breathed out. She had no clue what to say.
"Tell you what, I have big plans for this park." She moved towards a table in the corner. It had a detailed model of all of the facilities built on its dark surface. "With angels no longer having a monopoly on planar transit, I want to start offering special tours."
"For demons?"
"For all. Phoenix Parks is for everyone, no matter who or what you are." She grinned, but her expression grew serious when she cast her gaze at the model. "There's one problem, I need someone to help me run this operation, and I don't want just anyone. I want you, kid."
"Me?" Norma blinked, caught completely off guard. "What about Logs, or Badyah, or even Barney?"
Barborah only shook her head.
"I can't accept this. I'm grateful, but I have to finish school and-"
"And what?" Her boss chuckled, "go to college?"
"Yes?"
"Well, whatever you'll wind up doing, there's always a place waiting for you here." She tapped the styrofoam model with her index finger. "Let me know if you change your mind."
"I'll consider your offer. I have to go now." Nervously, she walked out of the room, the heavy door closing behind her with a click.
"Well, well, well, when did you get so sneaky." Pauline pulled herself out of the drawer and sat on the desk.
"I'm only trying to keep the talent around.” She shrugged. “Something you never could've been bothered with.”
“The only talent I ever needed was me!” The doll scoffed and crossed her arms in front of her.
“Right, keep telling yourself that.” Barborah sat down in her chair and turned to the window, which overlooked the entire park. The last day of summer was coming to an end, marking the beginning of a new, very busy chapter of her life.

this isn't exactly a fully formed thought so bear with me
I recently watched Dead End: Paranormal Park, and I have a lot of good things to say about it.
For those who don't know, Dead End is a new-ish cartoon on Netflix and is similar to Gravity Falls with its magical and paranormal elements.
This post will contain spoilers about the show.
Watching the show, it became immediately clear that Norma is autistic. It is never directly stated in the show that she is autistic, but it was confirmed by the creator. In the first episodes she mentions a hyper fixation (and yes that is the word used!) with the Paranormal Park and Pauline Phoenix. In the series she also talks about how much trouble she has socializing, struggles with anxiety, and is shown to have an issue with braking rules.
In episode eight, she is seen struggling with a moral dilemma when she learns that her idol Pauline Phoenix is a bad person and has been lying about her identity for over 30 years. Special interests and hyper fixations are really something you choose.
Personally, some of my more recent special interests are Steven Universe, the Alice Oseman universe, and Taylor Swift. Special interests are so important to autistic people; they provide so much joy, so when people make fun of or unjustly criticize these things, it can really hurt.
What episode 8 of Dead End shows isn't criticism, it's realizing the bad in something you love so dearly and didn't choose to love. This isn't something I've ever really heard people talk about, the sort of inner struggle when understanding the harm caused by a special interest.
For example, past discourse on racial stereotypes in Steven Universe wasn't a fun thing to learn about, but I realized it was an important thing to educate myself about.
Currently, Taylor Swift is doing a bunch of not so great things like her involvement with Where the Crawdads Sing, the fact that she didn't speak up about Roe V. Wade until it was too late, her large carbon footprint, and that fact that her statements on feminism don't include intersectional feminism.
I loved that Dead End: Paranormal Park not only showed good autistic representation (although I would have loved if they would have confirmed it in the show), but an autistic character's struggle of realizing the harm caused by something she loves, the fact that this news really affected her, and her doing what's right (but also she didn't lose interest in the park and still seemed to really like it all while still realizing the harm it caused and fighting for what is right).

OKAY DEAD END LIVEBLOGGING LET’S GO
only gonna do a few episodes
ep 1: the job
“did you tell her... Barney would be there” HAMISH YOU MAD MAN. THE FIRST EPISODE?
norma is so autistic I love her. she’s bad with names she’s bad with faces she’s just like me fr
norma’s phone case - a pair of lips with gap teeth is a ref to pauline phoenix itself which is a neat little easter egg
I literally can’t with pugsley in the backpack. he is so stinkin’ cute
it’s really neat to see barney and norma as like. friendly competitors and not already friends and to see them getting the job at the same time. neat way to do things
norma special interest pauline phoenix send tweet.
the way norma’s mom immediately assumed she didn’t get it... :( girl it’s okay. we’ve all been there
THE CAVETOWN SONG.... hamish you get it
Barney “blowing” out the candle while pressing the button was so cute. he just seems like a guy who finds the little joy in everyday things. love that for him
ep 2: the tunnel
WE GET TO SEE THE OPENING AND ITS SO GOOD OMG?????????? all the background characters and the framing of the haunted house with the roller coaster
BABY NORMA???? SHE’S SO CUTE
PUGSLEY IS SO BABY HE’S ADORABLE
Tumblr media
NORMA JUST MOVING PUGLSEY ASIDE. SHE’S SO AUTISTIC
norma not realizing badyah was joking. she’s just like me fr
pugsley and barney scolding each other is so cute. bad puglsey bad barney bad pugsley bad barney
the fact that even I, a cis autistic bitch who can’t read into deeper meanings half the time, caught onto the parallels between puglsey starting to talk and barney being trans before it was even explicitly mentioned. IT WAS SO WELL DONE.
“yes for the last time I accept cookies!” SHE IS JUST LIKE ME FR
the dino mascot being the one to hug barney... barney’s chosen name coming from a dinsosaur... I’ve connected the dots
ep 3: trust me
“spellbook, puglsey” “uh. b... o...o..” that was SO CUTE and clever. I think a lot of the jokes come from a place of characters misunderstanding each other but it’s done in a nice way, like no one is put down or anything
the scene with barney’s fear and the family dinner... I really hope they didn’t cut out his little brother because I liked that plotline :(( patrick where were you bb why weren’t you at dinner :(((
okay but backtracking. why is badyah afraid of hamsters what is that about. girl which hamster hurt you.
overall it’s remained VERY true to the books so far and it’s so cool to see the characters on screen :) hamish and his team knocked it out of the park and I expected nothing less!! more commentary to come

Super Smash Bros.'s Most Wanted
In less than 24 hours, Nintendo will have delivered its Nintendo Direct: E3 2018 presentation, and, along with it, most likely tons of new details about the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Nintendo Switch. The most exciting part of any new Smash Bros. is arguably the updated character roster, and while we already know the Inklings from Splatoon will be joining the lineup, other new fighters have yet to make their presence known. Everyone, however, has their own preferences, wants, and predictions of who will join Nintendo's all-star fighting extravaganza. Here are my personal hopes for the top 10 new characters that might make the cut (albeit not necessarily in order).
1. Pauline
Tumblr media
Not that long ago, the most notable thing Pauline had ever done was get kidnapped by a giant gorilla. But now, following her reemergence in Super Mario Odyssey, this classy dame is not only the mayor of New Donk City, but also a world-class singer. I'll bet she's got some fighting chops too - you don't make it in the political world without knowing how to get down and dirty, after all. Furthermore, getting physical in Smash Bros. would finally allow her to punch Mario and/or Donkey Kong in the face, which she's probably been wanting to do for a very long time.
2. Captain Toad
Tumblr media
As a Nintendo mainstay for more than 30 years, it's about time for Toad to make his presence felt in Smash Bros. But not just any Toad - Captain Toad! I'd want his classic attire to be in there too, and I'd want him to use his speed and quick-throw abilities from Super Mario Bros. 2, but I'd also like to see him make use of his pickaxe and any tricks he's learned after having ascended to the rank of Captain while on his solo adventures.
3. The Amazon
Tumblr media
If anyone deserves to be in Smash, it's the grapplers of Nintendo's NES classic Pro Wrestling. Tragically, this game seems to be forever ignored by Nintendo, but The Amazon (or any of his wrestling cohorts, particularly Starman) would be a perfect pit for Smash Bros. I'd love to see him chomping into an opponent's face or gouging their forehead with an illegal foreign object. Smash could really use a grapple-centric character, and The Amazon more than fits the bill.
4. Rex
Tumblr media
In Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Rex got on my nerves a little bit, but I can't deny his prowess as a swordsman or his capabilities as a "Driver." His ability to summon numerous weapons and "Blades" would make him an exceptionally fun and unique character to control, and I feel his epic adventure has earned him a spot on the Smash roster.
5. Max Brass
Tumblr media
It's no stretch to say that the fighters from ARMS are very deserving of joining the new Smash Bros. But which warriors should represent the brand? Spring Man and Ribbon Girl are the face of the product and would be the obvious choices, and many of the other characters are interesting, but as the reigning champ, Max Brass should get the nod in my opinion.
6. Funky Kong
Tumblr media
As an embodiment of one of Nintendo's most long-lived properties, and a stellar example of good dental hygiene, Funky would be an excellent addiction to the SB crew. After using his unique skills and surfboard abilities to earn his own mode in DKC: Tropical Freeze, Smash Bros. is the next obvious step.
7. Groose
Tumblr media
Confident, burly, and well-coiffed, Groose gave Link a hard time in Skyward Sword, and I think he could present an equally tough challenge to other Nintendo characters in Smash Bros. His loftwing could probably come in handy for some special attacks, and naturally his Final Smash would be the Groosenator.
8. The Elite Beat Agents
Tumblr media
Elite Beat Agents is one of the most underappreciated games in Nintendo history, but I think that could be remedied with an appearance in Smash Bros. I imagine that each of the agents would be represented by a different costume (although if there were a way to control all three simultaneously a la Ice Climbers that'd be amazing), and I'd love to see some sort of rhythmic element to their fighting. The Final Smash, of course, would be a full-blown musical number. Agents are GO!!!
9. Wart
Tumblr media
Essentially forgotten since Super Mario Bros. 2, the vegetable-hating former ruler of Sub-Con deserves to make a return from the dream world and into the ranks of Nintendo's fighting elite.
10. Professor Layton
Tumblr media
If I could add any third-party character to the Smash Bros. line-up, it would be Professor Layton. Not only have all of his games been published by Nintendo (in North America, at least), but, as a cerebrally inclined English gentleman, he stands out from other potential challengers. And given his fencing skills and penchant for makeshift weaponry (such as his coin-shooting slot machine in Professor Layton and the Unwound Future), he should have access to a variety of interesting attacks.
Bonus: Phoenix Wright
Tumblr media
If I could add any third-party character to the Smash Bros. line-up, well, it would still be Professor Layton. But Phoenix Wright comes in a close second! Given that he's an attorney without any fighting skills of note, he might seem like an odd pick, but he did fairly well for himself in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. That pointer finger is more dangerous than it looks.

Faye Wong "Fable" concert (2000)
Faye Wong "Fable" Concert Date: November 12, 2000 Venue: Taipei Municipal Stadium
The heavenly queen sings and battles the heavens.
Yesterday, Faye Wong's "Fable" concert was greeted by the god of rain. The stage design and sound quality can be regarded as the first in the Chinese music industry to be comparable to an "international level" concert. Faye Wong's singing skills made all the fans high from beginning to end!
Faye Wong’s concert was a major event in the domestic music industry. It seems that fans from all over Taiwan converged at the Taipei Municipal Stadium last night. Among the stars who attended include Pauline Lan, ASOS, Mavis Fan, Zhou Junwei, Rene Liu, Angelica Lee, Maggie Chiang, Jeff Chang and others all came to the venue to create an interesting sight of stars watching a queen.
In order to give Taiwanese fans the best audio as well as visual enjoyment, Faye Wong went to France in advance to purchase new outfits. As soon as the concert opened, she appeared in the style of "Barbie" to surprise the audience.
In her opening remarks, she said to the audience: "How are you? I am very happy that there are so many people. Thank God it's not raining. I was worried that fans would stand in the rain. Are you all squeezed together? I hope everyone can be safe and orderly." This brought the first wave of climax.
This concert was extraordinary in particular due to the design and lighting of the stage. When fireballs ignited on the stage, Faye Wong slowly rose from a revolving platform wearing a sexy bra which brought the second wave of climax to the concert.  She sang "Last Blossom" freely, but because of the distance between her and the band on the main stage, there was a slight delay on both sides. Fortunately, Faye Wong, who has a lot of experience, overcame the obstacles of the technical difficulties.
Of course, these situations will inevitably occur in concerts. But Faye Wong, who is genuine and laidback, has a “Faye-style” in dealing with special situations. For example, when she walked to the far right of the stage, her microphone suddenly lost sound. All the fans were very supportive and helped to sing along, she couldn't help but laugh on the spot. In addition, when she sang "Hypnotize", Faye Wong had to jump onto the stage from a lift.  I saw Faye Wong jumping onto the stage with the expression "Ah~", and then she continued to sing with a smile.
The third climax of the concert came when Faye Wong was riding a lift among the crowd while singing. I wonder if God was also moved to tears because rain began to fall and created an "atmosphere". Faye Wong continued to sing while immersed. And when she sang "You’re Happy, So I'm Happy" the video of her daughter was played on the screen. The enthusiasm of more than 30,000 fans in the audience was not dampened by the rain. Faye Wong gave a wonderful performance for more than two hours.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Faye Wong’s “Fable” concert was held at Taipei Municipal Stadium with over 30,000 spectators drenched in the rain. In the hot atmosphere, the concert made the crowd electrified.
Faye Wong's "Fable" Taipei Concert cost tens of millions of dollars to produce. The production was praised for being the best concert in Taiwan in the past five years.  In terms of stage, lighting, sound, and effects such as fireballs, laser beams, fire waterfalls, etc. all were beautifully made. When reporters polled the audience, they generally praised Faye Wong's performance and production. Fans were reluctant to leave and yelled "Ah Fei! Encore!" However, due to venue restrictions, the show must end at 10:00 pm, otherwise a fine of 10,000 Taiwan dollars per minute would be issued.
Before Faye Wong’s singing began, it had been raining. The audience did not open their umbrellas and only put on yellow raincoats. When Faye Wong appeared on the stage, the audience was in high spirits. In particular, there were so many stage elements, it was dizzying to see. And it was even more large-scale than Faye Wong's performance in Hong Kong. Ah Fei was more artful and bold. Three different types of fireworks were set off outdoors and fires were set ablaze on a small stage. In addition, there was also a giant lift where Ah Fei sang under the lights and raindrops. Although there were some minor malfunctions, the audience did not mind.
The concert was originally rated 100 points, but points were deducted because of Faye Wong’s costumes. According to a reporter after the performance, he asked the concert-goers in Taiwan to comment on Ah Fei’s concert. Most of the opinions said: "The concert was indeed wonderful. Ah Fei’s singing was very touching, but the clothes were old-fashioned."
This set of concert costumes were purchased in France earlier by her and the stylist. Some were vintage pieces. Faye Wong reacted to the comments and said: "If you don’t like it, you don’t like it. But I like it!"
At the post-concert celebration banquet, Faye Wong was awarded a six-platinum record by EMI record company because her new album was released in six regions including Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong and all achieved platinum record sales after three weeks.
Ah Fei said in an interview that she was moved by the enthusiasm of Taiwanese fans, but her cold affected her singing, so she only rated herself 80 points. Speaking of one of her sexy outfits, she smiled and asked the reporter: "How is it bold? Just because I did not wear it before does not mean I don’t dare to wear it.”
Reporters commented and said that the white dress she wore appeared to be like a wedding dress. She said: "It is a vintage evening gown, not necessarily a white wedding dress. Even if I get married in the future, I will not wear a wedding dress.”
