Fontaine Grind Update #2

I’ve finally gotten myself up to 83 pulls and I’m pretty sure that by the time 3.8 comes to a close, I’ll be at 100. So we’ll see where the count is once Furina’s banner rolls around, but it will definitely be over 200.

Still debating if I’ll try risking some pulls on the weapon banner for her signature weapon. Out of all the Archons I own, only Ei has her signature weapon so it would be nice to do the same for the rest of the Archons I own/plan to (at least on my main account, sorry Zhongli on my America account lol).

According to one leaker, Furina should be releasing during patch 4.2 (and she has no choice to come home, I have the guarantee. Finally Keqing, you haunting me between accounts has done something good for me) and Clorinde is still unknown.

But it’s my preference she doesn’t release until after Furina since it gives me time to replenish how many primogems it’ll take me to get Furina and focus those pulls on getting Clorinde. And like I said before, I’m grabbing the free Lynette in 4.0. The Traveler is going to be using Fontaine’s Pneuma mechanic and Lynette will be using Ousia, so it’ll be good to grab two free units with the core mechanics of the new region.

So I’m starting up the grind for artifacts to make the journey a bit less irksome for when the characters get here.

To start with Lynette, I’m going to be using the 4pc Viridescent.

The 2pc Anemo DMG Bonus is nice but I really want the 4pc’s ability to decrease elemental resistance to the swirled element by 40% considering how Lynette’s burst works.

And due to her elemental skill’s cooldown being, presently, 12 seconds, I’ll be slapping onto her one of my Sacrificial Swords. A solid classic that never disappoints and I have two to spare that are at R5 each.

I’m likely going to have Lynette be in my initial Fontaine team with my Hydro Traveler. For starters, she’ll be my first Fontaine character and she’ll use the Ousia mechanic, so my first team is going to be centered around getting used to the Fontaine mechanics of Pneuma and Ousia and the enemies using them.

As for the other two characters, to fill in the slot... I’m thinking Candace and Kirara OR Mona and Kirara. I’ll try out both Candace and Mona and see which character I like using the most in the comp.

Anyway onto Clorinde, my Electro sword queen.

I’m also pre-grinding artifacts for Clorinde as well. One of her concepts included Mista and the Sex Pistols from JJBA (hilarious when Kaeya’s JP voice actor is Mista and Diluc’s JP voice actor is Giorno), which I hope they go with because that would make her kit so much fun. I’ll be going with 2pc Severed, 2pc Thundering Fury and I’m using an Electro Damage Wanderer’s Troupe goblet for the off-piece.

For weapons, I’ll see what I can give her once the leaks from actually beta testing her comes out since we don’t really have any hints from pre-existing characters like the Traveler to get a gist as to what she’ll be able to do, I’m going for a couple general options.

Sacrificial and it’s elemental skill reset is always a classic solid choice.

Favonius Sword... as a nod to when we thought Clorinde, then Captain R, was going to be from Mondstadt lol. And the particle regeneration would be pretty decent for her with what little we know about her anyway since it could help with Burst upkeep.

And the Flute. The 1=200% ATK DMG from the Chord skill at R5 actually sounds really nice and I currently have a Flute at R5 despite it only being leveled up to lvl 60.

Typically for 5*s I don’t go for their signature weapons unless I really and I mean REALLY like the character and don’t have any characters I’m trying to pull for afterwards. So I’m probably not going to get her signature weapon, if anything I’ll be putting those savings into getting Nahida and maybe even Cyno’s.

Team comps for Clorinde that I have in mind? None so far, I have to wait to see what she can do and see the state of my future present characters’ friendship levels. If I really like a character, synergy be damned they will be on a team of characters I really like OR on a team full of characters I want to get to max friendship. We’ll see how it works for her but if you look at her Vision in the Fontaine teaser, she has an Ousia Vision so we’ll see if that also attributes to any comps I have for her.

As for Furina, who I’m hoping will be the only Fontaine character who can use both Pneuma and Ousia, I’m going to use one of the upcoming 4.0 artifacts for her, the 4pc Marechaussee Hunter (looking forward to the lore from that set) and I’ll be using an HP Heart of Depth goblet for (but if possible, I’d like an HP% Sand and a Hydro DMG goblet).

The 2pc Marechaussee increases Normal and Charged Attack DMG +15% and the 4pc set, the buff is: When current HP changes, CRIT Rate will be increased by 11% for 5s. Max 3 stacks. I’m using this set going off of the Hydro Traveler’s kit. The Traveler kit’s are always essentially watered down versions of the respective Archon’s depending on the element.

During the hold version of their elemental skill, when the Traveler's HP is higher than 50%, they will continuously lose HP and cause Dewdrop DMG to increase based on their HP. So Furina’s kit will definitely be involving HP drain in some way and currently, with how it works in the current beta, any kind of HP change will give a CRIT Rate increase. Depending on how her HP drain works, I’ll probably pair her up in a team comp with Kokomi or Yaoyao.

Weapon-wise, we know she is going to be a sword user and since it is pretty up in the air on whether or not I’ll be using her signature in the first place, I’m looking at other options.

First is the Black Sword (currently on my physical Traveler, my preference since he can switch through all the elements). My honest-to-Archon reason for wanting to possibly put this sword on Furina is because of the name of the weapon’s skill: Justice. It’s called Justice and she’s the God of Justice, I’ve got no excuse otherwise lmao. But uh, yeah I guess the Increases DMG dealt by Normal and Charged Attacks by 20%. Additionally, regenerates 60% of ATK as HP when Normal and Charged Attacks score a CRIT Hit. This effect can occur once every 5s. is pretty nice for Furina too.

Another option I’m looking at is Finale of the Deep, one of the upcoming Fontaine forgeable weapons. The name of the skill? No idea yet, but the skill itself is When using an Elemental Skill, ATK will be increased by 12% for 12s, and a Bond of Life worth 25% of Max HP will be granted. This effect can be triggered once every 10s. When the Bond of Life is cleared, a maximum of 150 ATK will be gained based on 2.4% of the Bond for 12s. Bond of Life: Absorbs healing for the character based on its base value, and clears after healing equal to this value is obtained. Which I think is fairly decent for Furina and it’d be fun to experiment with how the Bond of Life works using one of my healers.

The only thing really turning me off from it is the fact that we have to farm hand guards to level them up and any seasoned player by now knows how stingy the fucking Nobushi are with their drops.

My plan 3 sword that I’m considering is the Primordial Jade Cutter, one of the few 5* swords I already own which I got from fucking around on the standard banner. Protector's Virtue grants HP increased by 20%. Additionally, provides an ATK Bonus based on 1.2% of the wielder's Max HP. Something that will definitely be useful for Furina considering what her kit will look like based on what we’re seeing with Hydro Traveler and with how important HP is to Hydro as an element overall.

So glad Hydro’s Elemental Resonance changed because before 3.0, Soothing Water was just a Healing Bonus (and resistance against Pyro)... when Barbara and Kokomi were the only 2 healers for the element. (And I guess Xingqiu on a lesser scale with one of his passives) =.= Thank you 3.0 for that change, you will always be famous.

And finally, her signature sword that we have no idea what it can do but I do know it looks great on her so I’m considering getting it (at some point). The blues are absolutely magnificent, only the best for the color that has been my favorite since I was a toddler. But regardless of the skill it will have, it will obviously be something that benefits Furina as her signature so whatever it is I will consider when making my pulls.

Team comp-wise, I definitely want her paired with a healer. Kokomi is one of my best girls and definitely my best healer, has been since 2.1 so it’s always first instinct to put her on a team but I do want to give my other healers a shot to get to max friendship.

So I’ve got two comps in mind. For a Bloom comp:

Furina

Yaoyao

Candace

Collei

And for a Hyperbloom comp:

Furina

Shinobu

Candace

Collei

I might even try putting her in a comp with Nilou whenever I get her on her next rerun. But a special 3-person team comp I’d like to do is just putting Ei, Nahida and Furina on a team and seeing what they can do together.

And that summarizes just about my current progress/where I’m at in terms of team comp ideas for the Fontaine characters I’ll be first-gen using. Sorry everyone else that interests me, you’ll have to be grabbed by chance of being a 4* on the banners I’m rolling on or during a rerun. I want to get Lyney and Freminet at some point since it will complete the sibling trio and the Trevail duo.

Wriothesley is going onto standard (may he not get the Dehya treatment) so I will see him... at some point. See you eventually, Jotaro/Erwin.

Neuvillette is pretty and going to be a male Hydro catalyst unless something changes and his lore potential makes me want to pull for him. Bro might be actually be the Hydro Dragon?? It makes me sad because I wanted that to be Kokomi but if he is, I hope his lore is pretty damn good. We’ll see how I feel after his story quest. Ayato’s story quest being boring, in my subjective opinion, made me not pull for him the first time with no regrets. I ended up getting him later on his rerun for a sibling comp though.

I MIGHT eventually grab Charlotte since she is supposed to our first Cryo catalyst and I’m plenty interested in The Steambird.

Navia is pretty but I don’t use Geo often (nor do I use Pyro often, so LOL for Lyney I guess) so IDK if I’ll be getting her.

And we will have to see about everyone else. Hope the grind is going great for everybody else, may we win all of our 50/50s.

ISAGI YOICHI (潔世一)

He's the very rare traveler main! Specifically aether

Mainly uses electro or dendro aether for the elemental reactions

He doesn't understand why people don't use traveler a lot, he thinks being able to switch elements at will is very useful and versatile

SUCKS at dodging, he literally depends on his zhongli's shield to keep him alive

Speaking of zhongli, he lost his 50/50 to keqing on his banner, homeboy later spent hours grinding for primos, he deadass refuses to whale at all

He also might have sacrificed keqing at qingyun peak multiple times

Luckily, the peepaw came home after 30 more pulls

He's pretty netural when it comes to co-op, so long as you don't take his materials without permission (bachira is an exception)

He LOVES the new TCG event, he's got all the character cards and won nearly every single match in a span of a week

He also does co-op challenges with the others, they range from waverider races to stuff like "who dies first while fighting _____" competitions or "beat azdaha without a shield or healing" challenge

Bachira came up with the last one specifically for him

Low key hates fighting the cryo cube, the fruits you gotta hit to break the shield are a pain in the ass (i'm not self-projecting here i swear)

BACHIRA MEGURU (蜂楽廻)

A hutao and yoimiya main!

He enjoys looking at yoimiya's idle animations and spams her normal attacks just so he could see her do those little flips

Probably learned hu tao's dance and song by heart so every now and then while playing he'll go:

“大丘丘病了，二丘丘瞧～”

“三丘丘采药，四丘丘熬～”

He plays in CN dub but with JP subtitles

Still messes up a little on the pinyin pronouncination but he's trying

He also relates to hu tao since they were both considered weirdos by everyone (bachira's hu tao kinnie era guys)

Has considered cosplaying a character before

Loves exploring! Has every area at 100% exploration rate and all statues at level 10 somehow??

Always forgets that he's a pyro main and that grass exists so he basically almost dies standing on burning grass (can someone please get him a healer or a shield.)

Trolls other people in co-op by doing shit like the "disco disco party party" thing or using jean to yeet people

But other than that, he's actually very helpful with exploring and finding chests

Also steals materials from isagi

Sometimes forgets how to glide and ends up dying from fall damage (me too bachira me too)

CHIGIRI HYOMA (千切豹馬)

Ningguang main chigiri ningguang main chigiri ningguang main chigiri-

He first got her on the beginner's banner she's been on his team ever since, definitely has her c6

You can't tell me that he wouldn't decorate his teapot bc he WOULD

And it's decorated so nicely too, he's even got a whole area dedicated to the animals he caught

Started playing after bachira said the landscapes were pretty but then he got invested into the lore (he watches those genshin theory videos too)

Enjoys taking photos of the landscapes and his characters, he once accidentally clicked on his diluc's skill while taking a photo and proceeded to laugh at how cursed it looked

Doesn't like solving the puzzles in inazuma and enkanomiya tho so he just google searches the solutions

Randomly makes cracked theories about khaen'riah, it happens so often no one can tell if he's being serious or not

Absolutely hates paimon's voice, he'll throw off his headphones whenever paimon starts talking and go "stfu paimon" like calm down

HATES the spectors with all his heart

He also likes collecting items in the open world, has over 2k of each of them

Might have spent a bit of money on welkin but that's as far as he'll go

Idk why but he strikes me as the type to mainly use bow or catalyst users bc of the range

Is very good at aiming and dodging, has laughed at isagi struggling while they were fighting azdaha

KUNIGAMI RENSUKE (國神錬介)

The man somehow got a qiqi on the beginner's banner, he read her backstory, felt bad, and decided to main her

And no, his qiqi is not a healer or support, she's a full blown physical DPS

And her build is no joke either, he once made her do 200k damage while fighting the new scaramouche boss like kunigami wtf are you feeding her??

If there's a boss you can't beat, just call him to co-op and his zombie child will carry

Is another lore invester

Chigiri once sent him a video explaining enkanomiya lore and they later spent hours discussing about it

Got emotional at the tsurumi island and kazari quest, maybe at the dainsleif chasm quest too

Also levels up all his character's friendship to 10 to get their name cards

Has read all of his character's stories out of boredom

Completed ALL of his world quests, doesn't skip the dialogue in case he misses something important

Does hangout quests, beidou was his favourite one

Can never see hilichurls the same anymore after the chasm archon quest, all this time he's been killing cursed, innocent people? He feels so guilty

His luck when it comes to the gacha is literally phenomenal, the guy has never lost a 50/50 in his life

He's very skilled at controling his waverider and comes out at the top during waverider races

He's also good in fishing too, he manages to always stay within the moving bar

He plays spiral abyss often and would have 36 stars if it weren't for the last few floors being such a pain in the ass

Thoughts on XSOLEIL(y)

Individual Members:

Zaion Lanza: She has a surprisingly nice and cool voice considering the model. Very good VA. Seems to fall into the category of “shorties that can and will roast the shit out if you” which I like. I’m not sure what her genshin streams would be like considering she’s an explorer AND completionist (maybe it will be a gambling stream). Subbed.

Doppio Dropscythe: The one I was looking forward to most during pre-debut. This is probably the first time we’ve seen a RPer in NijiEn technically there was fulgur with his legatus persona but he dropped it almost immediately. His lore vid and character are very anime. Knows or is at least learning a lot of languages, which is cool and will definitely help with communicating with fans. Overall a wholesome boy that hypes you up! Not subbed due to timezones.

Meloco Kyoran: Manga style lore is cool, also it’s angsty AF. Her voice was something of a slowburn for me but it sounds very nice also yay JP accent. It’s funny as hell finally seeing an exorcist after 6 straight waves of supernatural beings and mystics. Her intro screen is cute and helped me appreciate the model more. Asia-friendly times, SUBBED.

Hex Haywire: Has the angstiest lore out of this gen. I swear, blue boys ALWAYS have the angstiest lores. Apparently, the deep voice is real; I was gullible and fell for his pre-debut trolling. Seemed like a sweet and chill guy; ik everyone is thirsty for him and his voice and i can’t blame them but tbh i just wanna protect him. That said, I’m very worried for him bc the Vtuber fanbase is absolute trash and he legitimately doesn’t seem to be doing well in the mental health department. Not subbed due to timezones.

Kotoka Torahime: Her lore vid was simple, but effective the lore gears in my brain are spinning. Introverted gamer girl with weird food takes. Design is cool but unfortunately I’m not really that interested in her based on debut. Not sure if I should sub, her schedule seems to be all over the place when it comes to timezones.

Ver Vermillion: I wasn’t that interested in him during predebut but so far he’s actually very interesting! After hearing his voice and seeing how he acts I can finally understand why everyone on twt was thirsting for him (even if I don’t do so personally). I don’t really have any experience with Korean stuff so can’t comment on his lore but his voice sounds very soothing and fits his model. Might put on his radio show in the BG every week. Might sub despite the timezone differences.

As a Whole:

I felt very hyped for this wave. The tweets were funny and interesting (shoutout to Doppio and Zaion), the debut song is a banger (and yes I am very biased towards the songs of the “dark” waves), and the concept for this wave is probably the coolest IMO. The hype was definitely deserved, as I ended up liking most of them; I’m sure I will end up liking Kotoka too eventually. I hope they are as close as they seemed to be during the debut program. The lores are becoming progressively angstier with each wave and while I appreciate the production values I’m not sure how to feel about it, especially since there weren’t really any “breathers” this time around. After the NA-fest that was iLun@ I appreciate being able to catch some of their streams live. Overall, this wave had a great start and I’m confident things will only become better in the future.

Digimon Tamers - Episode 8

Hmm this episode was just okay. There were some really nice animation moments, but it kinda felt like there was a lot of drawn out fluff. I still enjoyed myself, but I spaced out a couple times so I guess it didn't have me super gripped.

Notes:

Impmon was a fun little asshole in this episode. It's funny how he doesn't ever really get the reactions he wants. Renamon just kinda ignored him and Guilmon is too innocent to realize he's being trolled. Love a goofy villain who's bad at being evil. (I'm sure he'll get something darker to do eventually tho)

Terriermon has such an interesting personality. You would think such a cute little guy would be nice and affectionate but instead he's very blunt and says whatever's on his mind without much care for other's feelings. The way he inappropriately reacts to things yet seems to have a sort of wisdom...neurodivergent digi? (he does kinda look like autism creature lol)

The fact that Guilmon has a hobby of burying and digging up his food makes me think of enrichment for a caged zoo animal...at least he can technically leave

This episode did a really good job of making big digimon actually big! Adventure struggled with that at times (Greymon's size in the movie vs. the anime for example). I feel like showing off the hugeness of digimon and making them feel intimidating is all about the angles/perspectives they're "shot" at. Devidramon and Growmon felt properly intimidating in this.

Asanuma-sensei's JP voice is very monotone. She kinda sounds dead inside. She also barely reacted to a giant goth dragon flying inches from her head lol. I'd be screaming and peeing my pants and she was just like "what was that...?"

It's hard for me to not read "Grow" as grow...I get that it's from "growl," but that romanization is confusing out of context...

Takato being sucky at strategizing with his cards felt relatable to me lol. I'm bad at strategy games...

Seeing Guilmon digivolve for the first time was exciting and I look forward to seeing more Growmon in the next episode. I'm not super bothered that his design didn't change much. It's just annoying that digivolution is so inconsistent and sometimes they look completely different and other times its more gradual. Also, wait...when he was born Takato's digivice had to scan the drawing of Guilmon but this time it just kinda happened. Hope we get an explanation for all this eventually...

Speaking of unexplained mysteries, Culumon randomly shows up right as Guilmon is digivolving and his head lights up. The timing was suspicious, but I have no idea what the connection is yet.

I don't really get why Renamon and Terriermon couldn't have helped Guilmon with his fight. Renamon was like "that's Guilmon's prey..." which sure, makes sense with Ruki and Renamon's style of battling for power, but what was holding Jian and Terriermon back exactly?

omg project sekai JP event

full spoilers below cut

- first off: wow I underestimated this event. I didn't expect it to be *this* good. it's incredibly well-written imo.

- there are so many flashbacks to previous events. it really hammers in the feeling of everything having led up to this. samsa, mirage, bug, 2nd anni, wish/i nandesu, even a callback to the group story with the song miku sings - then finally the escape for survival quote.

- it's kinda nice that it makes the point to show that mafumum's methods don't even work for getting high grades - like on the one hand it wouldn't matter either way but on the other it's good to hammer in that her worldview is entirely illogical.

- the phone is broken when it's dropped in the empty fish tank. I did not expect checkhov's fish tank but also: it's a hobby she doesn't care for, something she only has due to the expectations of her having a hobby from other people. a reflection of her own emptiness under the expectations of her mother. of course it's what destroys her final way to contact 25ji.

- mafumum saying she's made food mafuyu likes for dinner. mafuyu doesn't like any food. the way it shows mafumum's complete ignorance of the harm she's done to mafuyu.

- the flipping back and forth between empty eyes and normal eyes during the final confrontation

- "it was a mistake, buying and giving you a computer, letting you use an instrument too!" mafumum is saying that the thing that saved mafuyu was a mistake. horrific. (not to mischaracterise - obviously she doesn't know how much it helped her - but mafuyu knows, of course.)

- cutting the ending with kanade short is a good choice imo. I think it's nice to leave it there - we can get confirmation on what happened later, for now we just leave them on that moment of comfort.

- not to get too ship-y but god kanamafu fans are winning

- the ending animation is excellent and heartbreaking.

- I saw someone say that an area convo says that she's staying with kanade? but she might also be staying in sekai? idk. no idea how things are gonna go from here.

- I think this event helped me get a solid idea of mafumum's actual motivation - I think she thinks she's wasted her own life and is projecting that insecurity onto mafuyu, judging by a couple of her lines. this makes sense to me - it explains why she acted similarly towards kanade. if it was that she wanted to control mafuyu there wouldn't really have been a reason for her to give the dig about kanade's future towards her during samsa.

- shout-out to mafumum's va (and also tanabe rui of course). the voice acting in this event is incredible.

- bad end au in which the phone fully breaks in the fishtank, miku and kaito aren't able to talk to her, and during the confrontation with her mum she gives in and fully forgets her true self, adopting the "good girl" persona for good

- might add more once I see card story translations etc.

Celine:considering she only cares about explosions i cannot imagine her in karaoke, man

Chiara:i think she might’ve been in the church choir and sings damn well. probably stopped for a long time but i think she can get back into it

Chloe:sweet soft singing voice. she sings to kids sometimes for sure

Daniel:another one that refuses to sing in front of people i think. if he sang it’d be sad emo shit though

Echion: i think he’d slay in a metal band. he loves yelling. probably would do well with covering those bad boy tiktok songs considering he emanates fuckboy energy

Eleven:not an amazing singer but she’d sound so happy singing. you can’t get sick of it

Eva:she would definitely be good at singing and sing to herself in her free time. that’s literally the most common habit to grow if you’re alone a lot

Emma:okay singing voice. she’d LOVE karaoke

Felix:probably just hums music in his free time and isn’t particularly passionate enough about singing for anyone to know if he’s good or even think much about it

Fiora:i can’t imagine her being a very good singer. arguably that could tie into her spider web of trauma and she wouldn’t want to sing, tbh

Hyejin:she definitely has a nice sweet singing voice. she could definitely sing someone to sleep or calm someone down by singing

Hyunwoo:bad at singing but doesn’t really sing with anyone around

(the way he normally speaks in jp is ending his sentences with kana rather than like. using kanji/hiragana the entire way through, to give the effect of his voice being sort of strange and discomforting. when he talks 'normally' the font he talks in gets all weird its funny)

anyway yeah he's cool. switch collab'd with hatsune miku in the jpn version so he's canonically met hatsune miku. uhm he's one of the 5 Eccentrics with Rei, Kanata, Shu, and Wataru, but he's the youngest of the 5 so they kinda treat him like a kid which he hates but also kept him from dealing with the brunt of the war and whatnot so he's grateful to them and cares a lot abt them. (he usually calls them -niisan its cute)

Finally got into the Engage groove. Sat down and went from 10 to 15.

Something about MC's "I can't do this without you!" at the Emblems is really funny. Big waifufag energy.

Again, another point where I wish the Emblems were original characters. You could actually do something interesting with Alear having some kinda mildly codependent relationship with the Emblems in spite of them not being truly alive if they weren't cool iconic FE characters that need to be objectively good and admirable at all times.

Heck, you could address the unsettling idea of the Emblems not being truly alive in the first place! They identify themselves as Emblem Name, which means even they see themselves as a derivative. Are they trapped in a hell of undeath, watching everyone around them age and die? Do they still feel the human need for interaction? They get used as weapons against their consent-- isn't that an awful existence? Why would they want to become an Emblem in the first place? They're like the cookies from Black Mirror...nightmarish.

Interesting characterization glimmer from Alcryst. His boss convo with his dad has him saying that he wants to be the one to kill dad in order to spare Diamant having to do it. Damn, son

The sad piano music on the retreat chapter is nice.

I don't get why localization did that with the shitenno names...they're supposed to be colors. Mauvier and Griss are recognizably colors, but the girls are weird. Zephia = Sepia, Marni = Maroon (or maybe Marron, the French version).

Reclassing ends up being kind of an odd beast thanks to how Emblem-dependant it is. Losing your initial batch of Emblems takes away your ability to spread weapon proficiencies around, which hobbles your ability to reclass for several chapters. Compounding that, it's a good while before you can buy Second Seals, and money is very tight. If you have a unit who starts off in a class not suited to their growths (Jean, Clanne) they're kinda just fucked. What's the point of designing a system with so much flexibility only to take away your ability to use it for most of the game? I would have preferred the system be more stripped-down and actually usable.

Goddamn, do I feel the money crunch. Buying gifts? In THIS economy?

Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card Chapter 64: Comments + JP-ENG translation differences

End of the month, it's time for another blog post about the latest chapter of Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card!!

This month we deal with a very important chapter, the 64th: as the last chapter of the future volume 13, it was expected to be particularly wild and with a tremendous cliffhanger, and I have to say that on my end it has respected those two qualities quite nicely!!

It started with a super unexpected surprise, and it ended with the promise for a quite turbulent volume 14 (possibly the last one?). On the translation side, we didn’t have anything major this month scratch that there's actually one that might cause major confusion, and alas there are several parts that need to be clarified in order to not misunderstand the characters.

Before starting, of course, we'll give a little space to our regular feature, the GIF OF THE MONTH:

The color page

Rejoice, SyaoSaku fans! You've not only been blessed with a wonderful double color page last month, where our two lovebirds wore very nice outfits, but this month as well CLAMP decided to break any unspoken rule about the color pages (once again) and propose once more Sakura and Syaoran, this time in their outfits for the play!

Of course they had to be shown sooner or later, since CLAMP are always very attentive in showing the colors of the most important outfits, and I believe in the next chapters the attention will be shifted somewhere else, so I bet it was now or never!

The background text in the JP version reads:

Alice in Clockland The performance begins!!!

Everything screams that yes, we're finally, officially in the climax!

Very serious expressions for our two kids (Syaoran got way too much in character 😆), along with the omnipresent gears and clocks. I didn't expect Sakura's costume to be black and white, the presence of light blue is very limited so it's kinda hard to tell it's an Alice dress...but I guess we have a peculiar Alice here. I also didn't expect so much gold and gray for Syaoran! All in all, another stunning illustration with our power couple!

And now, onto the chapter itself!

Come on, Alice, let’s go

We start exactly from where we left last time, with the play continuing (no, we didn’t end up in a different world yet) and we immediately find out that Syaoran is on stage out of his own will!!

My son, what got into you?? 😂 Kidding aside, Tomoyo is reminiscing of when Syaoran told her himself the reasons for changing his mind (I guess only fools don’t change it): first, because he could see that Naoko would’ve preferred for the cat to actually appear on stage and not only as an image voiced over. Then, it would’ve made things easier for his classmates too, who wouldn’t need to spend their efforts in animating an image of a cat, and could’ve used that energy in other more fitting parts of the preparations. In fact, here we find our first slight difference in translation:

ENG: “And I think it’d be a bigger help to everyone else, too” JP: “We could use everyone’s efforts on many other different things”

By the way, Syaoran sounds so casual and colloquial in this scene, I’m not sure it fits his personality of a serious kid (too serious for his own good). I get a bit of dissonance and I can’t help but raise my eyebrows at the tone they decided him to have.

Anyway, last but not least…being on stage would’ve allowed Syaoran to always stay by Alice/Sakura’s side, should something ever happen. Tomoyo is reminiscing of this convo in backstage and I love her serious expression, cause she seems to have understood this isn’t a normal play…..in fact, Naoko praises her for the outstanding costumes she has produced, and here Tomoyo breaks the fourth wall by saying it’s the first time for her to dwell so much on the design of the costumes, as she gets the feeling “Alice in Clockland” is very….special. I say she broke the fourth wall because this is basically Mokona-sensei speaking through Tomoyo, as she’s really had a hard time coming up with the designs of the costumes for the two Alice of this play (as revealed by Mokona and Ohkawa themselves during a Twitter Space some months ago). She produced lots of drafts and Ohkawa kept rejecting them!

Now, I have to once again point out how the ENG translation makes Tomoyo sound as if she never put too much thought into her designs, something that sounds really offensive towards a character who worked so hard until now to make her most beloved person happy and protected through her costumes. No, it’s just that this time it was particularly difficult for her.

ENG: “I don’t think I’ve ever put so much thought into costume design before…” JP: “This is the first time I’ve been troubled this much with a (costume) design….”

Please, don’t do dirty to our Tomoyo-chan, K-USA. Moving on~

Kero and Suppy are watching the play hidden between the trees, with the yellow beast commenting on how “the brat sure is showing off” (well, he did put on a very cool act which feels so not Syaoran 😆), and Suppy wondering if it was Sakura who asked him to come on stage to keep the situation checked for anything out of place….which Kero agrees with, since all the involved parties are gathered here (In the ENG it’s “the gang” while Kero calls them “the actors” in Japanese), and they can even feel a faint aura of magic. They know something is about to come up, and Nakuru touches Yukito’s shoulder to signal silently that he needs to be prepared.

The play proceeds, I cackled so hard at Touya’s slightly irritated face when seeing Syaoran STILL showing off all his coolness on stage 😂 The Cat introduces himself to Alice, and I’m not sure why they decided to translate “Are you the Cat?” into “Was…was that you all along?”, but anyway….

The Cat tells Alice that he will only show her the way, but the one who will decide what to do and what not, where to go and where not, will be only her. And once she decided….that will shape her world. Pause pause pause. Take a step back, get out of the story for one moment and try to appreciate the message CLAMP is sending through this scene. I think it’s really beautiful.

In the play, all the choices Alice will make will shape the world she’s going to see. The analogy is perfectly applicable in real life too, as all the choices we make, all the steps we take in this or that direction, the things we DO and even those we DON’T do, shape OUR world. And you can be perfectly sure that even from now on, the outcome of this climax will be decided by all the parties actively playing in it.

The song starts playing again in the background, as the choir calls and encourages Alice to go on her journey, and there’s a difference in translation in the latter part of the song that makes it probably hard to understand what really happened there. So from this part of the lyrics on out:

ENG “The story of her choice… A story all for her… And the cat that will lead the way to her dreams.. Alice… Oh, Alice… Carry on. But know… You can never go back” JP “The story Alice will choose A story (made) for Alice The [Cat] will guide her And Alice's wish will be waiting for her ahead Alice... Come on, Alice.... Go forward.... And YOU CAN'T GO BACK ANYMORE”

You see, I’m not really sure if it’s clear enough in the ENG version because they translated the lyrics in a way that includes the last “You can’t go back anymore” as part of the song, but it isn’t like that. In a very creepy way worthy of the best horror movie, the Ominous Voice™ decided to intrude on the song at the worst possible moment. The proof is in that “Omae” (rude way to say “you”) that’s still unchanged. They would never use that in the song. This is the Ominous Voice™ Sakura is hearing, not the kids singing the song.

Translation issues aside, I was discussing with some friends that maybe we’re giving a more negative meaning to this “You can’t go back anymore” than necessary. Because if you think about it, plain and simple, this is really what happens once you make decisions for the sake of your wish. Maybe it’s just a general statement (but we remember how they portrayed it in the anime and it is undoubtedly creepy).

The Red Queen

Guided by the Cat, Alice finds her. The other main character of this play.

We see her from behind first, and you can really tell Mokona is pushing hard on the ominous and creepy flavour of this play. Not to mention, the gears that decorate the background in this scene are straight up the same gears that appeared in Sakura’s dreams ever since the beginning. Try comparing them. The mysterious person asks her why she’s here, and Alice can only realize that being here is making her heart ache.

The other person, played by Akiho, introduces herself as the Queen of this land, but when Alice asks her what’s her name, Akiho hesitates again. Yes, I don’t think this is part of the script. Because Akiho looks really pensive (and even a bit creepy here) when she gets to that part, and this is the second time it happens. Used to interpreting Clamp’s art language, I really think something is up with Akiho’s name. They never show her eyes when she hesitates. Yeah. But please can we take a second to appreciate how absolutely stunning Akiho looks in this outfit? Heels, a dark veil covering mysteriously her face, a big rose decorating her head, a victorian dress….she’s simply amazing in this dark-ish attire they dressed her in. It’s so uncommon to see her like that, and yet I find it totally fitting for her, as let’s be honest, darkness is part of her heart too. For what she went through in her childhood, and those memories will never go away. Those scars will heal, but they will always leave a mark on her. This is what makes Akiho, too, the person she is. And she’s perfectly fine like that. ….aaand let’s not go over the fact that her dress looks a tad too much similar to the one Sakura-hime wore when everything went to hell in TRC in the Tokyo Arc. Let’s not even consider that her veil really looks like a mourning veil (with her loved one being so close to his death). Or the fact that the gear decoration on the bodice is suspiciously similar to the gear decoration on her artifact dress. Nah. We won’t see those things and just proceed forward, rejoicing in the short but appreciated appearance of our Akiho.

Alice introduces herself to the Red Queen, and reaches her on top of the stairs, Cat following her shortly behind. The background in this scene seemingly changes, but as Sakura is reaching Akiho at the door shaped like a clock, the two literally disappear.

On the Other Side

That’s it, guys. The moment we all were waiting for. Let’s get the ball rolling.

And here I have, unfortunately, to point out a translation that I didn’t like at all: Syaoran, shocked, in the ENG version says “She’s gone!”, while in the JP version there isn’t a clear subject (with only the verb “disappeared”), but it really would make more sense if he said “THEY disappeared”, including Akiho too. Come on now, I get that Sakura is his girlfriend and all, but it’s really so offensive to Syaoran’s character to make him worry only about her and discard anyone else that was with her. As a dear friend on a Discord server rightfully said, “we don’t want people to assume that’s the kind of story this is”. It’s awful, to be honest. This is not what CCS is about and yes, even a slight line like this can contribute to warping things in an unwanted direction (as if they haven’t been doing the same with Kaito since day 1).

The gang in the audience doesn’t lose time, and Yukito activates his Moon Shrine powers immediately, seemingly summoning Yue (we can see his wings) and engulfing the entire school under his protective night barrier. His eyes turn into those of Yue too. As he does that, Touya blows all of us away with a single spell:

JP: “Oh, Time. Stop.”

Yes, my friends. Touya used his super secret new power and it’s time magic. Time magic! Let that sink in for a moment…

Time stops for everyone, unaware of anything, save for Suppy and Kero, and Yukito warns Syaoran right away: (yeah, another translation difference)

ENG: “We can’t keep time frozen forever out here, you know!” JP: “Our side (we) can only stop time for a short while”

Why. What happened here, that Yukito is sounding so f*cking rude to Syaoran??? Yeah, Yuki is warning Syaoran to hurry up and go because time won’t remain frozen for too long. But he’s doing it in an infinitely kinder way than what the ENG blurted out here. I just can’t see Yukito like this. And no, it’s not an effect of half-transforming into Yue, as his speech tone didn’t change into Yue’s one. It’s still Yukito, just a bit more confident. Moreover, he’s using the “this side/that side” that’s been used by Kaito all along. The “separation” between the two sides of this ordeal, that needs to be overcome at the end of the story, to spread the message of love and understanding that Cardcaptor Sakura always stood proudly for. Moreover, it is a way for Yukito to imply that he knows “that side” (Kaito) can stop time for longer, but they (“this side”) can only do this much.

Continuing with the chapter, Touya rudely (Yes, he’s being rude 😆) tells Syaoran to hurry up and go through the “portal”, and Syaoran yells “I’ll bring her back without fail!” (I think here it might be more forgivable to say “her” and not “them” even though we have no subject in JP, because Syaoran is making a promise to Touya with something that is very much related to him, his sister). Syaoran goes and the portal closes on itself, as Yukito informs us. I have to say, this scene reminded me HUGELY of the agitated moments at the end of the first chapter of TRC, where Syaoran left for another dimension in order to save Sakura-hime, and Touyuki creating together “an opening” for him to go saving her…. Also, I loved how big brother Touya put aside his natural competition with Syaoran, to entrust his precious sister to him. It was already shown in episode 09 of the Clear Card anime, and here his behavior coherently makes no exception. He knows Syaoran loves Sakura more than his own life and he’s dead serious when he makes a promise like that.

Nakuru funnily says that stopping time is quite a cheat, but Touya tells us how things actually are. And to do that, he’s reminiscing a talk he had with his mother, some time ago (apparently, from the outfit and what she says, it’s the same day she appeared to Fujitaka and told him the story of her and Lilie). They talked about Sakura getting involved in something strange again, her powers growing at worrying speed, and how she can now see things she couldn’t see before, because apparently her own fear of ghosts and such put a cap on the development of such capability. In my opinion, this is something Sakura did at a subconscious level, though. There was no conscious effort (especially cause before the Clow Book, she didn’t know she possessed powers). Well, now that “lid” has definitely popped off, because of her huge amount of powers. And if those powers grow uncontrollably any more than this, Sakura won’t be able to govern them anymore. Touya knows their mother has been worrying about this ever since Sakura was born. So they discuss the new ability he’s developed lately: of course Nadeshiko already knows about it, which is the ability to stop time for about 2 seconds. (Note: in the ENG version they failed to understand that the line correctly translated “You can stop time” was actually said by Nadeshiko, not Touya!! Nadeshiko was merely finishing off her son’s phrase, that’s all. She isn’t saying that she can stop time, it doesn’t make sense! As I always say, when in doubt look at the multiple layers of the story, the peculiar shape of the bubble is right there to indicate that it’s Nadeshiko speaking. Just as you can well recognize when Sakura or Syaoran are acting and when they’re actually speaking normally, since CLAMP took care in using different fonts for that. I’ll never get tired to say it, you can’t read and translate Clear Card properly taking in consideration only the script)

Touya asks her mother if he could use that power should anything happen to his sister. Nadeshiko, ENG: “Yes, in her time of need. But don’t do it alone.” Nadeshiko, JP: “You’ll be able to use it for an important moment. Together with another magic power”

And that’s when we find out that when Yukito puts an entire area under the protection of his barrier, Touya’s minimal powers get enhanced greatly and he can stop time for a longer while. Isn’t this just the power couple moment I guess Touyuki fans were waiting for? 😁 It’s very lovely to think that the power of one of them can amplify the other’s….I want to believe that it’s possible thanks to their great connection and feelings they have for eachother. Nakuru is surprised but can confirm that she can feel both their powers being greatly amplified by eachother (a nuance that was totally lost in the ENG translation), but that’s when Kero completely blows his cover by yelling “SO IT IS A CHEAT!” 😂😂😂 Touya tells both Suppy and Kero to come out cause he’s known about them all along, and explains that this isn’t simply a “cheat”, they’ve been training very hard to achieve that! And this, my friends, is probably one of the scenes people were looking forward to the most, cause it was weird that they kept pretending to not know, when everything was already out in the open at the end of the previous arc! 😂 Now Touya can officially be part of the magic discussions too, if they want, and we can see how his “relationship” with the guardian beast will be! 😆

The chapter ends with a huge cliffhanger about what will happen now that the group of the “veterans” (I call them like that) has been separated, and how could we close this chapter without a translation difference?

Yukito, ENG: “Besides, it seems we can only help her on this side of the door” Yukito, ENG: “It’s all up to the Cat now” Touya, ENG: “I’m sure we didn’t stop him, after all”

Yukito, JP: "But since it seems we cannot do anything at all 'to the other side' (Kaito)..." Yukito, JP: "If the Cat won't do his best...." Touya, JP: "We won't be able to stop him".

Touya and Yukito are using the nai to + darou form here, indicating “if this doesn’t happen, then…” in future tense. To be fair, though, the Spanish translation follows the ENG interpretation, while the French one interpreted it like me. So you have both interpretations here and can keep in consideration both of them.

Syaoran needs to absolutely work his best in order to stop Kaito, because both Yukito and Touya are well aware that they cannot do that. And it’s not only a matter of mere amount of magic. I’ve always had the impression that Touya somehow knows what’s tormenting Kaito and making him act like this, so that’s why he hasn’t taken more drastic measures earlier. In view of this, both of them know they do not hold the key necessary to stop Kaito. But Syaoran might have what it takes to start destroying the walls Kaito is using to barricade himself. Understanding. A small, first step into helping him. Cause then, we all know who will be the one giving him the final blow.

This is it guys, from next chapter (the first of the future volume 14) we’ll hopefully be on the other side. Or we’ll get more flashbacks in order to collect all the puzzle pieces missing from the new character’s backstories. Regardless, we’ll proceed forward, towards the end of Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card, hopefully answering all the questions still up in the air. Surprisingly enough, we won’t even get a break! Chapter 65 will be out as normal schedule on August 1st / July 31st for the western fandom. The schedule is as follows:

July 31st, on Bookwalker, if things get back to normal, cause this month they’re super late (digital, ENG) August 1st, on Clamp-fans and Comic-days (digital, JP and other languages) August 3rd, on Nakayoshi (paper and digital, JP) I cannot wait to see who will be on the next color page. My bet: Akiho and Kaito! These two need a long overdue color spread together! And we need to see the color of their outfits!

i was watching something on youtube last night and then on the side saw a song and i was like “i have no idea who this is but ima give it a listen cause i need new music” so i click it and at first at the beginning since it was a lil slow i was like “mmmm dont think this is gonna be up my alley” so i skim some forward and right when i heard her singing, my jaw dropped, and it stayed dropped the entire rest of the song

oh my god, Pandora by Suzuna Nagihara. This type of music is typically not up my alley (like i’ll find it cool but i wouldnt download it) BUT over the course of the song, the song just got more epic and epic and im like HOLY SHIT??? with every new section. Very JRPG, Nier-like, epic, full of choruses, and the banger part is the synth bEATS that are incorporated into it which i fuckin love.

But that’s not what captivated me. What captivated me was her VOICE. Her singing. oh my god. idek where to start. It’s so airy, breathy, and LIGHT, yet she still manages hit the stronger notes at the same time when she needs to. But even her stronger notes sound light and open. Idk if it’s the help of the mixing of the song or not but omg, just, the way she sings this song fITS SO WELL FOR THIS TYPE OF SONG AND JUST WORKS SO WELL AND IT JUST MAKES THE SONG S TIER. and i love it so much. Voice aside though, the song is just kinda insane, i love the distortion/glitch at 0:44. i think it was a great way to introduce the faster speed of the song/transition into the actual (?) song. As if the part before 0:44 was just a prologue (as she sings in the lyric) ((Though I feel like the song actually starts at 1:40))

I obviously then checked out her other stuff and she does a ton of JP song covers, and of course they’re all very good, but there are definitely certain songs that works better for her voice, cause I don’t think she’s a big belter (though she can, of course). She tends to sing best with her head voice (?), which makes me think that her cover of Kaede’s Koikaze from Cinderella Girls was one of her better covers. Not saying her other covers were bad, but Koikaze and her original song Pandora are up up up up there. Singing in a head voice/falsetto is definitely her stronger suit and more to her.

Her regular speaking voice is also very nice :)))))))))))))))))

Anyway go check the song out pls thank you, i never usually bother with writing this much about something that isn’t a sad post, SO THAT JUST SHOWS HOW POWERFULLY THIS SONG/HER VOICE HIT ME.

It’s also on the quieter side for some reason so u gotta boost ur volume, it might have been on purpose but that was a Bad choice to do that imhO. this song needs to be LOUD.

Also one last note: the part from 3:57-4:04 is so chilling cause of the way she sang it, that emotion sounded SO, SO RAW. whether she was acting or not (maybe most likely ?) it was so jaw dropping, i remember my jaw dropping more than it already dropped and breaking my floor when i got to that part for the first time.

TLDR: I love Suzuna’s Nagihara’s voice a lot, especially in her original song called Pandora, so give it a listen :)

ch 10 liveblog

just the quick reactions i have while reading the chapter! updated as i go. i'm making a separate post for translation-related things, but that'll be posted when i finish the whole chapter

so for artem/mc interactions, he feels normally protective and careful of her but the awkwardness is still there he doesn't know if she's mad at him TT (immediately blocking her from view in the car!! and realizing now that he was so shocked because things were awkward between them!!!) also i'm gonna note his reasons for taking the case as close enough to the post-ch9 predictions

hmm artem's acting being SHIT in this chapter. clearly he can act when he wants to, so i'm interpreting this as him thinking the prankster is such a clown that he can half-ass this performance xDD

vyn on leave of absence w/o informing us... they really ARE functioning separately omg

also this guy thinking he has leverage over them with vyn. LMAO. i'm starting to see why vyn was so cruel with him in that screenshot

so bold of this to be in an artem-focused chapter. they knew what they were doing

the contrast of his appropriate distance at the detention center vs his insistent closeness when they seek out jonah zahn... add that to the theme of closing the distance from the first year of cards... nice nice very nice

a follow-up to his encouragement from ch 9 that mc could handle this?

oh nooo )): jerome is like 100% framing felicia securely for this case. kind of ironic because he told her to go through all the trouble of making a show out of it to ensure justice for her husband, but then he went through so many hoops to frame her instead... also tot is kinda interesting in just how much public opinion affects how the cases play out. here felicia was told having the "curse" cause a stir was the only way to catch the true culprit, but another common thing in stories is the harassment that rosa and artem face as attorneys for high-profile cases... another thing to think about. court of public opinion and whatnot
