I desperately wanted to try this lens hence why I purchased two copies of the @zenit.lens #helios40_2 85Mm F1.5 lens brand new from @bhphoto. Both have not met my minimal expectations for quality out of the box; both had issues with the manufacturing. The first copy had an aperture ring that did not work. The second copy had a chip in the rear lens element that shows up in bokeh when photographing specular highlights - I use Christmas lights for this test as it alerts me to mold or lens separation on older vintage legacy lenses. The chipped glass artifact from the 2nd copy shows up in the bokeh! Also, the front lens cap was busted and detached on the exchange copy. The little plastic hinge mechanism was not even attached to the cap! . Sigh, I’m sending the exchange back for a refund and won’t be looking for another copy of the Zenit and I cannot recommend the new copies of the classic Helios… This lens has an awesome reputation if you can find a keeper; I’ve seen plenty of amazing image examples. I really wanted to love this and I rarely return gear when buying it new but this has been a bad streak of luck, I guess? . I’ve reached out to Zenit about this issue; waiting to hear back! I also have have to share an opinion about the main US Distributor for Zenit; he doesn’t get a passing grade from me for providing good customer service. He’s one of the rudest people I’ve had the displeasure of communicating with when I reached him for insight not knowing he was the source supplying BH Photo with these #Zenit Imports… . Your best bet is to find an older used copy of this lens even if it doesn’t has the improved coatings like the newer design?
