Near the end of part 1 of The Traitor Baru Cormorant, Baru spends time in a tavern arguing about whether power lies in money or in the familial ties of nobility with an "actress", who it later becomes clear was in fact the Duchess Nayaru. Her act slips quite a bit throughout this conversation as she describes who she would make of herself an empress, but Baru misses it completely because she is very, very drunk.
As an extra hint for the observant reader, the scene begins by noting that the actress looks enough like Baru to be her sister: a couple of chapters ago, Baru was stopped by Duke Pinjagata on suspicion of being Nayauru, and he mentioned their strong resemblance.
While Nayauru (correctly) notes that Baru pays no attention to the personal lives and motivations of the Aurdwynni nobility, she gives examples:
"Do you know the story of Xate Olake's marriage to Tain Ko? Could you tell me why Heingyl Ri has only one living cousin, and who it is? Can you name the dukes who lost all their children in the Fools' Rebellion?" Baru brushed the challenge away. "Touching stories, I'm sure. I'm not a playwright. If it mattered, I would learn." "You rule a nation of the bereft. That matters. It changes how we think."
The first example is important because it is one of the breadcrumbs laid out to establish the background existence of Tain Shir. The third, I'm not so sure about: maybe as I reread I'll find further references to exactly which dukes this refers to. But the second:
"Heingyl's daughter handles his accounts. She likes to stay in debt to the Fiat Bank, as a kind of bond of trust." "Oh. Interesting. Maybe that's why she wanted my job. Who's her mother?" "One of the sisters of the last Duchess Nayauru, I believe. Didn't survive the Fool's Rebellion."
Heingyl Ri's only cousin is Nayauru herself, and she is the only one living because the rest of her family died in the Fools' Rebellion. Baru brushes aside as trivia the fact the woman she is speaking to, who holds a quarter of Aurdwynn and dreams of empire restored, lost her entire family to the Masks.
But there is even another layer: Nayauru, the "actress", is in the bar at the recommendation of her cousin. Heingyl Ri, who Baru consistently dismisses in the first two books as a potential actor in her own right, is the one who sent Nayauru Dam-Builder to judge the Imperial Accountant while she was vulnerable.

something about baru cormorant’s wording is giving me like the reading version of echolalia like the invented phrasing is so pleasing that I’m just walking around repeating stuff like “the fairer hand” “the stag duchess heingyl ri, haradel haia” “enact colonel” “the Necessary King” to myself

Baru claims she can’t dance, has no idea what she’s doing, then proceeds to literally sweep Heingyl Ri off her feet. I know she’s a fast learner but this is unprecedented.

i want so many books, waughhh. and they're really long books too--which is good!--but they obviously cost more and waughhh.
anyway, thinking about baru this morning, and kinda want her to end up with heingyl ri. if only because i really like how she's described (fox eyessss!!), i kinda like her vibes with baru, and she is available because of waves vaguely at that moment in monster.

Been thinking about how you can create solid tragedy by giving a character enough intelligence and genre awareness to recognize that someone or something is trying to draw them down a guilded path to hell, and they can be so cautious and take such safeguards against falling into the trap but they can't quite bring themself to find true safety by exiting the narrative entirely because they want too badly, and slowly and inexorably the pressure of the narrative convinces them to place one toe after another down the path, because they're observant and careful and they have safeguards and surely they've protected themself well enough and surely their reasons are good enough and they know that going just this tiny way won't hurt them and they stand to get everything they want so just this once it must be fine? and with each step further the road grows darker and they grow less certain and more anxious but they've come so far now and surely what they want is just around the corner and they want it so so much.
I've also been thinking about Heingyl Ri

The more I think about it, the more I realize that like one of the best things about the books is just. The journey Baru goes on with her sexuality. Like it goes from something she had no issues with as a child because like. There were no issues to have. And then she goes to that shit school and like yeah she makes fun of the lessons but they’re clearly sinking in. Then Farrier has Aminata scare her and it’s like.
She just ends up entirely fucking mortified of her sexuality? Like not just in the fashion of being scared of being caught but also like she does show signs of shame over it. A shame that Hu helps her with. And the helping is hard and takes A Long Fucking Time. But she does help her with it. It’s why I find the bragging about how many women she’s fucked thing so sweet. Like, yes, she’s bragging but the bragging serves a purpose and that purpose is like...Trying to decouple shame from sex with women.
But like that shame’s still there even when Baru does manage to fuck. She very much does just go “WELL THIS WILL PROBABLY RUIN ME BUT FUCK IT I WANT THAT”. And it takes her a while to realize that that is what is going on there mentally. It takes her a long time to realize a lot of things, really. Like how fucking long it took her to realize that she and Hu got married. Like that was just A Very Obvious Thing in so many ways, but like Baru’s perspective on her sexuality has been so deeply fucked that it took her forever to figure that out.
And even when Baru starts more actively getting into things she still has issues. Granted, some of those are tied up in her grief over the whole dead wife thing. But she does have issues and one of the ones that stands out right now is like. The disaster relationship with Shao Lune. Like that wasn’t good for her. But she’s lonely and gay and getting used to the whole being able to fuck women thing. Exciting new experiences time! Ones that turn out garbage!
Another thing I really like about this is like...That period of time where like the grief is still very fresh and she’s not slept with anyone else yet and like. Svir is just kind of really fucking mean about the fact that not everyone’s as repressed as she is. And she’s just. Upset.
Another another thing I really like is like how when she is going about plan “We need to woo Heingyl Ri” she is like “BUT WOULD WOMEN LIKE ME???” Despite that she has by now had like...four instances of proof that, yes, women do see something in her. And then she like specifically ends up dressing similar to how Hu would when crossdressing and there’s just something so sweet about that. Like the woman’s dead, but she’s still teaching Baru things. It reminds me a lot of my learning to dress from like butch women I knew when I was younger. Baru’s being like “Now it is time to dress like a sexy hunter lord just like my dead wife”.
There’s just so much that goes into her journey. And there’s so many little things that I haven’t mentioned here that are part of it that I like. And it’s just. Really cool getting to see that over the course of the three books that are out. Because like a lot of it speaks very hard to me as a bi woman with a strong preference for women. Being queer in a society that hates you is hard as shit. And it is a journey puzzling things out. And it’s really cool getting to see that sort of thing in these books with Baru.
And I’m really wanting to see where she ends up with it in the fourth book. I want to see that fucker crash the stock market and end an empire or whatever the hell else, but also I just want to see like. Baru’s gay self actualization. With Iscend.
