Reading the Masquerade series (Traitor Baru Cormorant, &c.) gave me brain bugs and I needed to draw everyone so bad!!

This is by no means a full cast, but it’s a start. Top down and left to right, Baru, Ulyu Xe, Iraji, and Aminata (heart eyes). Disclaimer: I saw someone else on Tumblr who I can’t find now, who drew Baru with this same mug and I knew I had to do it too.

I’ve drawn a Svir, which I will post at some point even though my headcanon for him has changed since then, and I still reALLY wanna draw Xate Yawa (👀)

I read the Baru Cormorant books years ago but at least once a month I think about the way Dickinson described Ulyu Xe and go slightly wild about it in my head.

A sporty aquatic muscular woman, but the muscle is covered with a layer of firm fat/curve? Functional muscle? That makes her look sleek and graceful like an otter? And her chill personality?

Thinking hard about Ulyu Xe’s design. Like in my opinion, she’s very selkie like. And it doesn’t make sense for her to have long hair, but it’s just a good look too. And of course, I’ve been looking at a lot of photos of pearl divers and that’s helping too, but I dunno how to bring that fantasy spark into the design. I’ll think more about it
