why tao xu is autistic

this has been in my drafts for a while and it’s midnight when i’m deciding to write this so i’m gonna do my best here:

tao hates change. he says multiple times in the show that he hates things changing. i forget about the graphic novels (side note: most of my points are going to be from the show just because i remember that better and tao had more involvement in the show than he did in the novels)

tao is very blunt in the things he says. when he tells people how he feels about things he doesn’t hold back anything

he also doesn’t really think about what he says. at charlie’s birthday he doesn’t really consider how charlie will feel if he tells him about nick’s “date” on his birthday. or another way to look at it is he sees protecting charlie from heartbreak from nick more important than his birthday party

he has a very strong sense of justice. see above. also he thinks that they should stand up to harry and the other boys who harass them and he acts on the ideology a lot

going off of this, although he doesn’t really pick up on how others might feel about what he says or does, he does act with the best interest of his friends in mind. what he does may not be the best thing for them but he does things with the intention of helping his friends

kind of touching on things from what i’ve said before, but he doesn’t really pick up on others feelings. he doesn’t fully understand why he shouldn’t have told charlie about nick on his birthday. he doesn’t understand why charlie doesn’t like him standing up to harry. and it takes him a while to pick up on elle’s feelings for him.

he has a special interest in movies and he’s very particular about them

he’s also very stubborn in his opinions about things and people

his hat appears to be a comfort item in a way. we almost never see him without it

i hope this made sense. i’ll be completely honest that it has been a little bit since i’ve been involved in heartstopper content. but i am going through my drafts and this one has been there for a while. feel free to add on to this with your own thoughts! i’d love to hear them!

i loved that charlie 's scars were on display in this moment, they don't magically appear or disappear, they are always present, they are normalised, they are loved, he doesn't have to feel embarrassed or scared of nick's reaction to them anymore and nick loves the scars as much as any other part of charlie and i think its such a tiny, significant and precious moment.

there isn't enough positive sh representation. characters are almost always loved despite the scars, not with the scars. so thank you alice, heartstopper for that.

I am devastated I swear. Listen I adore Oliva Colman. She's amazing and I think she's perfect as Sarah and I don't want anyone else to play the role, but I'm very very worried about season 3 without recasting Sarah. I appreciate that they don't want to replace her, but she's such an important character as a supporting and loving force in Nick's life, as well as a mentor character. I'll trust Alice and the crew, I'm sure they know what they're doing, but damn I don't know how they're going to do the beach scene without Oliva Colman/a Sarah replacement.

i Cannot express how often i think abt the last scenes of 02x08 and how much it must drive the people who haven’t read the comics/novellas just CRAZY bc… like charlie and nick have their heartfelt moment and then say goodbye, and to the viewer everything seems normal— great, between them. but nick closes the door and turns to the camera, and we see just how worried and conflicted he looks after charlie’s gone, as he has time to process what he’d learned about his boyfriend and the things he’s gone through in the past and how charlie still very clearly has to deal with the consequences of those traumas in the present. meanwhile charlie is nearly a perfect juxtaposition; walking home with a smile on his face typing out the words “i love you”, on the verge of sending it to nick. he hesitates, and the episode ends. for people that don’t have an idea of what happens next for nick and charlie, they’re left on a complete cliffhanger of wondering wether or not the conversation they had in nick’s room could negatively affect their future relationship in the next season. charlie seems to be more in love with nick than ever, but nick just seems so troubled.

i just can’t help but wonder what those people that love the show and these characters they’re seeing for the first time might be thinking. it’s easy for people like us because we know nick and charlie will make it through every single hardship thrown at us on screen (we practically eat this type of angst for breakfast)— and we can wait a year or so to see what happens next because we have a general idea of what it’ll be.

but those people who don’t? they have no clue that this won’t be an inevitable end to nick and charlie’s relationship and/or won’t result in some form of destruction. they don’t know that nick and charlie make it through this as well as charlie being hospitalized and both of them graduating school and enduring fights and a (basically) accidental “breakup” and eventually getting married and living together and adopting a dog AND I NEED THEM TO KNOW!!!! I NEED THEM TO KNOW EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY BETWEEN THEM IN THE END NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SHOW
