WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DRINK A VAMPIRE'S BLOOD?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
" now, why are you wondering about drinking vampire's blood, carissima? do you have a secret lover, or are you just curious? " warm brown darkens as lips curve into a teasing smirk. cyrillo's closer than before, and you swear you can feel heat emanating from him despite knowing vampires are cold to the touch. he leans away as soft laughter escapes him. " don't worry, i am only poking fun. there are many rumors surrounding my kind, so i understand you might have questions. "
" drinking a vampire's blood will do nothing to you but create a connection between you and the vampire you drank from. our blood is magical to some extent, after all. ah, you look confused -- by connection, i mean you'll feel what they feel, and they'll feel what you feel. it can be rather... intense, to say the least. " cyrillo grins. you wonder if he might be implying something.
but it can't turn you into a vampire?
the mage hums. " well, not right away. "
what do you mean by that?
" exactly what i said, carissima. " cyrillo's tone remains light, yet his gaze is heavier as you meet his eyes. " drinking a little here and there won't turn you into a vampire, but drink enough, and it's possible. ' enough ' is quite a lot, really, if you want to be sure the change will happen. as i said, our blood is magical, and if you want that magic to take, you need a lot of it before you die. "
before i die?
he smiles. it lacks its playful tilt from before. " we are undead, remember? corpses brought back to life, lost souls returned to their flesh. " a small pause. " despite my own experience, i understand why some choose this life, but i hope it is a choice that is never made lightly. "

also does anyone else get a kick out of making characters the opposite of the expectation? bc sla might be the mother of dwarves, but she’s definitely a tall lady who just really loves lil guys. just like how lif looks more like a wood nymph than an elf. elves look like sunna bc lif made them in honor of sunna. there’s gonna be more once i start really thinking about all of the deities, but i dunno :’ ) just brings me a lil joy :’ )

peeks my head back in. vampires in dorverold wear charms in order to walk in sunlight without burning to a crisp! cyrillo's personal charm is an earing that he never takes off; it looks something like this, very simplistic and unassuming. definitely not what you'd expect a charm to look like, and that's the point! if someone decides to try and take his charm and turn him into a pile of ash, he doesn't want to make it easy for them. if they figure out his earing is his charm, then they still have to get really close to get it off.
charms can be used for a variety of other things -- resisting a vampire's influence, for example -- but do tend to quickly rise in price depending on the charm you need. sunlight protection charms, for example, tend to be pricy not only bc of the demand but bc these charms protect against divine magic, too. to be protected from the sun is to essentially be protected from sunna and the divine magic she once gifted mortals.

your comrade is running late to your meeting, and not for the first time, though you realize he must keep busy these days. boredom has your eyes wandering about his room, taking note of old and expensive-looking knickknacks and the piles of books and papers scattered about the place. you do not mean to snoop while you wait for cyrillo to arrive, but one paper in particular catches your eye, and it reads:
as vampires were created by necromancy, they have inherited certain attributes of said magic. in other words, vampires have their own magic, though it is very limited in its capabilities and execution. while a necromancer may influence and persuade the dead to do as they wish, a vampire holds a certain influence over the living. this is perhaps a result of their status as both dead and alive -- the magic used to resurrect them is meant only for spirits, yet it gave them life, leading to this magical attribute. regardless, one should always cast the proper charm or wear the proper accessories when associating with an unfamiliar vampire lest they find themselves at the vampire's beck and call. if one finds themselves defenseless, it is possible to resist a vampire's influence if one plugs their ears and avoids eye contact. but this is, of course, not ideal around a fanged acquaintance. a vampire's blood has no benefit if one were to consume it, but it does well as a magical amplifier, most notably for necromancers. like belongs with like when it concerns magic. aside from this, one may choose to consume the blood of their lover if they wish for a deeper connection; with a vampire's blood in their system, they will feel the vampire's emotions and as the connection grows, they will be able to tell what they must be thinking. to be clear, this connection goes both ways, and thoughts are still private. this connection is purely feeling and can be incredibly confusing to navigate at first. one should be sure before they make the decision to drink their lover's blood. if one consumes enough vampire blood...
the door swings open as cyrillo enters the room, exclaiming a fond " cara mia! i'm sorry to keep you waiting! " and clapping a hand upon your shoulder. you launch into a conversation over the mages' progress and what practice drills are working, though you still wonder: what does happen if you consume enough vampire blood?

VAMPIRES IN DÓRVEROLD
vampires are some of the only beings who were not intentionally created by the divinity. they are a result of mortals meddling with life and death when they shouldn't; specifically, they are a result of necromancers attempting to resurrect the dead, calling back their souls from endir's domain. necromancy is not capable of a true resurrection like divine magic is, so the result is a new species of undead who hunger for blood.
vampires have existed since the great war, though few of the original vampires still live, and none claim to be this old in order to avoid complicating matters. there would be too many questions concerning the gods and the outcome of the war. it is simpler to pretend they are not that old.
cyrillo de bortoli is one of the original vampires and by far, he is the most well-known and powerful. should you mention his name, most anyone will recognize him as the man who brought the vampires into the light and won them rights as people rather than creatures. should you mention his name in the grand city, most anyone will speak fondly of a good experience they have shared with him -- a select few may sneer and call him a snake. de bortoli has many friends, but one does not fight for his people without gaining some enemies.
the current public opinion of vampires is fair if not sometimes teetering between fearful and fetishized. despite the fact that many vampires purchase blood from butchers and doctors to keep themselves well-fed, many people still fear that they might become their victims while others hope for it. apparently, there is something very sexy about having one's neck bitten.

//can one still 'guarantee' vampirism via drinking a lot of vampire blood... from different vampires? also, Are there any interesting effects (or not!) from drinking the blood of different vampires??? (besides. yk. the emotional and mental toll of being tapped in to Multiple other peoples feelings etc) . w.
ask about my lore! | @futurefind asks some good questions!
for a lil overview, i talk about vampire's blood here and here!
Tumblr media
the quick and short answer is: yes! it doesn't matter who gives you their blood so long as you consume enough of it. this is practiced by those in a relationship of three or more people, and though it's a bit more emotionally challenging, it isn't any harder or easier for the mortal to become a vampire.
as an extra little tidbit, the children of nott will turn people/find opposing vampires and drain them of their blood to use for their willing converts. this avoids the issue of the mortals feeling the emotions of the children and vice versa. to be clear, they kill the vampire after taking their blood.
aside from the emotional connection that forms from consuming it, there are no other benefits to drinking vampire's blood no matter who it is you're drinking from. mortals don't need to consume it bc they're alive; vampire's blood specifically has necromantic properties, so that renders any effect it might have null and void until a mortal dies, becoming a vampire themself.
it can be used as a magical amplifier, but you must make a blood sacrifice as you cast your spell or have an amulet/token/etc. that is soaked, fused, etc. with vampires blood. simply having the blood in your system won't do anything for your magic as the blood's properties are applied to your body rather than your spell in that situation.

thinking too hard about titles and how both cyrillo and kaiya have been given titles of nobility for all the work they’ve done, but i have to read about titles again bc i forgot which one i decided cyrillo was given :’ ))) all i know is everyone who isn’t a vampire is scandalized that kaiya lives with cyrillo and runs his household and isn’t married to him!! she hosts his social events with him and takes care of fundraisers and events outside of the manor!! why!! they cannot get their heads around platonic life partners :’ ))

so how does bronwyn fit into rin's story? let's get into it : )
the very simple and short answer is: she's the reason king edmund can raise the dead. as many others have done, edmund seeks bronwyn out, having heard of a creature that grants wishes for a price. he's pretty polite and cordial, so when he asks for the power to summon the dead, to utilize dark magic that the gods once granted a select few, bronwyn goes, " eh, why not. i'm bored. "
i won't lie... her boredom gets her into trouble often enough asdfg
edmund doesn't present himself to her as a noble, though. he disguises himself rather well actually, wearing clothes of a common traveler and allowing the grime of his journey to accumulate ( after all, maintaining an immaculate appearance would not be an option for regular folk ). because of this, bronwyn doesn't really suspect much, assuming he'll use the power to stir up trouble but that it won't be anything too drastic. it won't affect her or helena.
had she realized he was someone of importance who could stage a coup, she never would have helped him. bronwyn doesn't like to meddle in worldly affairs, and the fact that edmund uses his power to betray his brother?? oh, bronwyn hates that and is pissed. she might hate traitors and liars more than anything else in this world.
so cut to a very miffed bronwyn making her way to the dwarven cities to meet with the leaders of the free army under the guise of a noblewoman expressing her interest in funding them. i'm still thinking about how she goes about this exactly, but she then reveals she has knowledge that's valuable if they want to kill edmund, and she gets herself a skeptical audience with rin and co. i'm thinking she ends up becoming a magical advisor?? and one of rin's closer companions.
and bronwyn does actually know how to kill edmund. she tells the leaders that edmund is himself undead due to the process that gave him his magic; while resistant to normal means of death, he is highly vulnerable to divine magic, fire, and ofc if you chop off his head, his body will be useless. so basically!! if rin can simply get into the same room as edmund, she can kill him.
so yeah!! don't do things out of boredom or you might just cause the a horrible war among peaceful kingdoms <3

MAYBE IT'S WHAT SHE WANTS.
i refuse to believe that.
Tumblr media
she cannot hear rin's words as she pierces edmund's heart with her blade, but eva mirrors her smile, feeling relief and joy wash over her even while another undead throws itself against her shield. it goes limp within seconds, just as dead as its master who now lays at rin's feet. one by one, the undead soldiers drop and usher in a silence among the living who all glance around the battlefield, catch sight of their leader standing above the slain king; rin meets her comrades with a smile, and a roar of cheers engulfs the valley.
eva watches her friend as cyrillo makes it to her. with the war over and won, they can go home, back to the grand city -- or maybe home is elsewhere, now. maybe it is with a certain prince who has proven to be an unlikely but dear friend, or perhaps it is with the vampire who has always welcomed their company, even prior to rin's god-touched status. that is for them to decide ( no longer is her friend bound by a duty thrust upon her, heavy and unfair as it is noble and necessary ).
her smile falters as rin stumbles into cyrillo's chest. no. eva all but throws her sword and shield to the ground once rin collapses, sprinting to her side. no. cyrillo lays her on her back, undoing leather straps and tearing rin's armor away as delicately as he can, and--- eva's heart drops. crimson stains rin's shirt. no, no, wait. her crystalline gaze locks with cyrillo's.
" sunna will bring her back, " she tells him, voice firm and brow furrowed. her tale won't end here just like it didn't end back in that village. eva holds rin's hand in her own as tightly as she can without hurting her ( there is a feeling in the pit of her stomach -- dread, the sort she can't explain ).
" yeah, the bitch won't let me die, remember? stop lookin' so damn... " the lightwielder drifts, eyes drooping despite all her efforts. she can't squeeze eva's fingers anymore. " damn upset. we won. " an amused huff escapes cyrillo.
" we are so terribly sorry it upsets us to see you bleeding out, mia stella. shall we go join the other soldiers-- "
" no, stay. " she was always alone when she died before. she doesn't want to be alone now.
the smiling sorcerer brushes sweaty, fiery strands away from rin's forehead, muttering a spell to numb her pain. " of course we will. "
they do. they stay until the air leaves rin's lungs and never returns. they stay and wait for her body to glow as it has in the past. they wait for her eyes to open again, bright and flecked with enough gold to argue that her eyes are another color altogether. they wait to see her smile, hear her snarky comments about never wanting to do that again.
they wait, but nothing happens.
cyrillo wears a grave expression, dark eyes intent upon rin's serene features. eva grows increasingly agitated the longer he doesn't saying anything. the dread is all-consuming now, drowning her heart and clouding her vision ( or are those tears? ).
" why--- " her voice cracks, and she clenches her jaw. " why is nothing happening? "
cyrillo doesn't answer, but she knows he heard her because he purses his lips.
" answer me. you know something. "
" maybe this is sunna's final gift, " he replies after a moment. pain colors every word. " the chance to finally rest. "
rin's hand is still warm in hers, still curled around her fingers. eva shakes her head. " no. no, that would be cruel. "
" not to rin. not after all that she has been through. to be forced to continue living and fighting all this time... sunna is not cruel, eva. "
she's still shaking her head, more frantic and growing angry. " you can't really believe that. rin never wanted any of this. you know what she did want? no, right? she never talked about it after all of this... this shit! i know she wanted to complain -- i know her, so i know she wanted to, but instead, she protected everyone, even when it cost her her life. she wouldn't talk about it, but you and i both know it took a toll on her. "
" how can you think this is cruel, then? "
" because what was it all for? all this sacrifice... what was the fucking point if she's dead? "
cyirllo hesitates, holding her gaze. the dreki in front of him is a far cry from the shy warrior he met so long ago. " she saved millions of lives--- "
" don't give me that bullshit, cyrillo! it isn't fair! you know it isn't! "
" maybe it's what she wants. "
eva stares back at him. her heart is breaking into pieces. rin's hand has lost its warmth. " no, " she whispers, and her voice cracks once again. " i refuse to believe that. " the vampire carefully places a hand upon her shoulder.
" eva... "
" bring her back! "
her sudden shout startles him; he watches, wide-eyed as eva screams at the sky. bring her back! soldiers still milling about turn, only just realizing the scene happening before them, but eva pays them nor cyrillo any mind. you bring her back now! she deserves to live! you know she does! fucking damn it, sunna, bring rin back!
( memories of cold streets and indifferent faces resurface. you were so alone, so afraid. then she found you, all curled up and wasting away in an alley, and she didn't ignore you like the others did. her smile felt like a summer's day back home; her eyes reminded you of the algae-covered rocks you once spent hours lounging upon. she pulled you up and out of that alley, brought you home, gave you a new name. eva. it was the name of her favorite elven warrior. she thought it suited you well. )
" bring her back, " eva cries, cradling rin's body against her chest. " i beg you. "
( she was all you had, all you needed. she still is. )

staring at kaiya and realizing that in this version of her story, she still has a strong will, but she doesn't have the same control over herself as she did in her k.ny verse. in k.ny, it's a thing of finding one's humanity again and winning against m.uzan's influence. if you break free from his hold successfully, you can resist the desire to eat humans, even if it's still a struggle to fight the hunger at times.
but as a vampire in dorverold, kaiya isn't fighting another being's will. she can't exactly have the same " mind over matter " approach bc in order to live, she has to consume blood. if she doesn't, not only does her physical condition deteriorate, the hunger becomes harder to control. the beast becomes harder to control -- the same one that lives within each vampire, the same one that cyrillo tamed long ago. kaiya doesn't understand how he does not fear it. how is he so sure that he won't hurt someone some day?
even when they are well-fed, a vampire can be sent into a frenzy if exposed to too much blood at once, which is especially true for younger vampires. even when they are well-fed, a vampire can lose themselves when drinking from the source, particularly if they do not often drink from a living creature. even when they are well-fed, a vampire can still lose control, and kaiya fears nothing more.
the memory of her resurrection still haunts her. she lost control for mere minutes, and someone lost their life; she fears what could happen now that she is surrounded by so many who she cares for.

here's some lore regarding eyða that you would just never known unless the deities themselves told you <3
eyða is the only deity that came into being at the same time as sunna. whatever caused sunna's creation caused his, too, and he is the only deity that can truly be considered sunna's equal. her children have always failed to kill or subdue her, but eyða would not have the same trouble.
he was ( and i suppose still kinda is ) a patient, understanding person before endir's birth. he knew his sister would regret killing him, knew that her actions did not hold true malice, knew that it was only a matter of time before she brought him back and apologized. but then she never came, and a castle appeared in the spirit realm. endir appeared. eventually, eyða understood that he was never going home. he understood he was replaced and betrayed and thus became bitter and resentful.
the spirit realm is, in truth, eyða's domain. it is constructed from his soul's essence, and endir's castle splits it in two. one side is tainted by eyða's darkness that grew and festered once he realized what sunna had done. the other side is untouched and where souls waiting to be reincarnated reside; should endir's castle ever fall, it would be consumed by eyða's darkness within minutes, and its residents twisted into dark spirits and fiends.
endir is literally eyða's replacement. sunna eventually came to understand that death must exist, but her shame and pride and fear prevented her from simply facing her brother. this betrayal is, in part, the reason that the spirit and mortal realms must endure the evils of dark spirits. any souls who resided close to eyða were tainted alongside him.
to be specific, eyða is the god of destruction, death, and the end, whereas endir is spefically the god of death and the afterlife.
eyða does not have a physical body nor contact with the mortal realm, but he is a god like sunna, and like her, he is able to influence the mortal realm to an extent. when a great calamity occurs or a mortal falls to the temptation of violence/destruction, it is his doing. hurt and filled with an old darkness, eyða wishes to bring an end to sunna's beloved creations -- the world and all its inhabitants.
i'm contemplating that it is eyða who edmund makes a deal with, possibly promising to become a vessel for his soul once edmund dies. i can't remember if i talked about this here yet bc it's a recent edit, but edmund is a vampire, so he would think that he's tricking a god into a deal that only he would benefit from. maybe it works or maybe it doesn't... i'm undecided bc i do want eyða to be the true big bad, but he might be an atagonist and conflict for another story :' )

deities in dórverold | ft. eyða
Tumblr media
while exploring the ruins of a forgotten temple whose deity you cannot recognize, you come across a cluster of pages, most of which are now indecipherable. but you make out a name here and there -- eyða. you glance at a mural across from you. on the left, a goddess towers before a group of mortals in a field of green, watching after them as they walk away. the sun shines behind her and illuminates their path until the mortals cross into the dark where the grass becomes grey and the sky is void of color. knelt and waiting with an offered hand is a god. a mortal stands before him, and though the expression has been worn away with time, you get the impression that the mortal isn't afraid. they willingly walk towards their god.
there is no mistaking the goddess for anyone other than sunna, and you would have assumed the god to be endir had you not come across these pages, had not walked the halls and gazed at the face of an unknown deity. you run your fingers across the name on the pages. eyða. to destroy, to bring to nothing. who was he, and why have you never heard his name before?
later, after stumbling across a hidden compartment on your way out, you find a book. it is worn and weathered as everything else in this place, but the pages do not fall apart in your hands. what you read shocks you.
life cannot exist without death. creation and destruction often follow the other. a beginning must have an end. however our mother sunna came to be, so did our father eyða to maintain balance. we understand this to be true, and we will persist in keeping his memory alive. his tale and teachings shall not be erased, no matter the shame it may bring sunna. we may be called blasphemous or heretics, but we will not allow the truth to be forgotten: sunna slayed her brother eyða, the true god of death. sunna birthed the mortals. she gave them life, long and joyous, but eyða knew life needed to have an end. to live forever is to suffer for any who are not divine. yet his sister was blinded by her love for her children and could not bear to let them die; even as she held one of them in her arms broken and suffering, she could not bring herself to end them. she believed she could soothe them, nurse them. but eyða could not let the mortal -- or any after them -- continue to endure such agony. he showed them mercy, gifting them an end, a death. it was a kindness, but in sunna's grief and rage, she saw it as an attack. carelessly did the goddess strike out, and carelessly did she kill her brother. all through the land, sunna's grief and guilt were felt. the sun did not shine for weeks. nott and his children provided all the light they could, hanging more glittering stars in the sky than ever before. he soothed mortals with dreams of days in the sun, running through fields and swimming in warm lakes. but a melancholy swept over all mortalkind until finally, sunna brought back the sun and called back her fallen mortal. she never revived eyða, however. instead, she eventually birthed endir, a new god of death and the afterlife. we can only assume that she feared eyða's ire or felt too ashamed to face him, and now his soul will forever roam the spirit realm. may he find some peace. may he never be forgotten.

important figures in dórverold | ft. hulda vattenbarn
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hulda vattenbarn is most well-known as the founder, leader, and grand priestess of the children of nott. she is a dreki who became a vampire a little over a hundred years ago, turned by cyrillo de bortoli himself. though once his lover, hulda no longer claims any connection to the grand vampire and will, in fact, openly disapprove of his actions. yes, all he does is for vampirekind, but he is too willing to bow to mortals and their fear. he is not willing to fight as she is.
hulda is said to be an intimidating woman, standing at nearly 7 ft/213 cm with sharp features and a sharper gaze, yet she is also said to be incredibly kind to her followers. they adore her for the hope she gives them, the sense of belonging and community she fosters, and they admire her for her unwavering resolve. to them, she is as much a mother as she is their leader and priestess.
little is known about hulda's origins aside from her involvement with cyrillo de bortoli, which is to be expected as someone hailing from fraeknland where the dreki people live. not much is generally known about them as they tend to keep within their borders, but if anyone were to investigate, there would be nothing to find. before the children of nott, before her time with de bortoli, hulda vattenbarn was no one of importance. she was a young girl without parents and without anyone to miss her when she ran away in hopes of finding a place better than the small, miserable fishing village she grew up in. there is nothing to be gained in chasing the ghost of a girl who died long before hulda rose to power.

locations in dórverold | ft. the dwarven cities
Tumblr media
located in the southeast of the main country lies a great stretch of mountains where you will find the dwarven cities within. this area is called fjalland, but most refer to it as either " dwarven country " or " the dwarven cities; " dwarves themselves call their home by its proper name or just " the cities. "
only a few of the cities are located above ground. the dwarven people have otherwise carved their cities out of the stone within the mountains, utilizing natural and handmade cave systems to travel between cities without ever going outside. entrances to the cities and cave systems are difficult to find unless one is already familiar with them, and very few who are not dwarven know where to look. the dwarves are a somewhat private, proud, and cautious people.
what cities are located above ground are hubs of commerce and diplomatic relations. people from all over travel there to trade with dwarven smithies, hire dwarven architects, etc., while the dwarves hope to trade their goods and services for whatever their mountains are unable to provide, such as certain crops. any activities that are meant to improve relationships with other countries and people are held here mainly as a safety measure, though dwarven officials will claim that it is to avoid making their claustrophobic guests uncomfortable ( among other trivial explanations ).
the free army currently inhabits one of the above-ground cities due to its large size, though rin and other higher-ups reside in a city just within the mountain.

i'm back and realizing that most people recognize sunna as the mother of creation ( and arguing otherwise tends to spark conflict, like with the elves whose mother is truly lif ), but you do get a lot of different groups of faithful because of the plethora of gods that exist in dorverold. the sea cities that cyrillo came from largely worshipped sjor, for example, and the dwarves worship sla ( who also technically created them ). neither deny that sunna is the reason the world came to be, but they do not actively worship her as they do their patron deities. special days are probably set aside to honor sunna, though; no one wants to anger a goddess, after all.
and i do think you'll find followers of people like nott who worship him but also pray for the favor of minor deities connected to him. i'm still brainstorming, but i'm currently thinking of a deity of secrets/protector of night and a deity of stars/wishes and hopes, just to give examples. if one were to worship endir -- or maybe when they're saying their last prayers -- they'd likely pray to the deities who judge the dead and the deity of reincarnation.
and who worships which god largely depends on the region you're in and the people you speak to. the grand city has a big mixture of followings, but the city itself honors sunna as its patron goddess, which is why the clerical order's headquarters is there and why the order holds a lot of influence.
there's more i wanna talk about, but i wanna do that in a separate post before this one gets too ramble-y asdfg i'm just having a lot of thoughts and it's all mainly lore/background related rather than muse or story related :' ))
