#hate rhaenyra all you want

rhaenyra is as much of a girl’s girl as the society she lives in allows her to be.
book wise she has multiple ladies in waiting (not just alicent, which is a grave oversight in the show), one of which is said to have gouged out her own eyes at the sight of rhaenyra’s murder. that doesn’t sound like someone who isn’t capable of inspiring loyalty from the women around them. rhaenys fully and wholeheartedly supported rhaenyra and her cause, even dying in her attempts to make her the first queen regnant of the seven kingdoms. laena betrothed her daughters to rhaenyra’s sons, ensuring that her blood sat both the iron throne and the driftwood throne, all while being a pretty difficult backing to break due to the wealth and naval power of the velaryons (all of this in spite of the bastardy rumors surrounding jace and luke). the agreement also puts forward how politically astute rhaenyra is, and how she didn’t just rely on her father’s word to put her on the throne. she made alliances using her sons hand in marriage; borros baratheon might not have declared for aegon had a proposal taken place the night luke brought rhaenyra’s terms. baela was only held back from partaking in the many battles because of her dragon’s size, otherwise she would have been right beside her betrothed fighting for rhaenyra. there’s even a chance that rhaena would have joined had she had a rideable dragon of her own. she had mysaria, a former sex worker, as her mistress of whisperers, a very esteemed position on her small council. the cases of rosby and stokeworth have no bearing on this, because they were never named as heirs (along with being literal children during a war time) which is what rhaenyra was using as the basis for her rulership. jeyne arryn knew her own position as lady of the eyrie would be challenged (again) if aegon stepped over rhaenyra and subsequently supported her cause. important women like alysanne blackwood and sabitha frey were key players in cregan’s army.
show wise she is shown in the season two trailer to be taking advice from rhaenys and allowing her to be a part of the war efforts. baela and rhaena are explicitly included on her war council, with rhaena as her cupbearer. moondancer is no longer a hardly rideable dragon and baela seems to be taking direct part in the war. rhaenyra is already shown in a set picture to be communicating with mysaria (whether that’s discussing blood and cheese, the aftermath of it, or something entirely different remains to be seen). these are not the acts of someone who hated other women, and using her falling out with alicent and the resulting enmity between them (that is almost completely one-sided due to the difference in power dynamics) as an excuse to otherwise is worse than strange, considering alicent’s canonical goal was to seat her son, a known violent misogynist, on the throne over a woman who was the named heir to the king.
the green’s entire ideological standpoint is that women cannot rule, ever, for it would make the main members of the green’s powerless, and any other lord or heir’s claim would be up for debate if they have an elder sister. if the iron throne had truly been aegon’s by right alicent, otto, and criston would not have left viserys’ body to rot for days AND they would have had the backing of most of the houses. if alicent had cared more for her children’s wellbeing she would have convened a great council before the war began or considered any other effort that would not lead to her children fighting on dragonback. rhaenyra’s (peaceful) ascension would have at least started the necessary changes needed to grant women more authority and (!) autonomy in the seven kingdoms. queen consorts had significantly less influence after her murder, along with the targaryen’s losing their ability to hatch dragons. rhaenyra does not need to be a feminist for her cause to be inherently feminist by proxy.
rhaenyra was not a feminist, but she did have great love for other women. it’s disingenuous at best and downright insulting at worst to try to paint her as anything else. she inspired loyalty even after her murder. if the black’s cause had truly relied on putting rhaenyra on the throne, her armies would have disbanded once she was dead. instead corlys and larys poisoned aegon, with rhaenyra’s son being placed on the throne afterwards. it was ultimately about bloodlines in the end. jaehaera suffered the unfortunate consequences of an ambitious hand because of her status as aegon’s daughter. it plays directly into how alicent outlived her entire family, besides jaehaera, and went mad with grief, learning to hate the color green. how greed and the allure of power can and will corrupt those who choose to make that a priority in their lives, and how the innocent will usually pay the price for those sins.

Lucerys. Child. Why.
You've literally scarred this guy for life. This guy who has grown up to be twice your size. This guy you've just seen is insanely good with a sword and who rides Vhagar.
And you choose to laugh in his face?? How is that going to turn out well for you my man how is that a good decision (someone clearly hasn't studied enough history and philosophy huh)
He had beef with you. Someone taller and scarier. And you chose to laugh in his face.
In short

Are yyou team green or black? And why?
team green, though I'm not in support of every green character (namely Otto though my opinion of him is complicated. I also have opinions on Aegon and his characterization that makes it even more complicated)
[I have only read bits and pieces of the book, so my opinion is based almost solely on the show. keep this in mind]
I'm team green for 3 big reasons. they're more complex, thought not perfect by any means, more morally "right", and are simply more my vibe when it comes to characters. now this is very simplified and not at all nuanced, so stick with me for a minute.
Firstly, they're more complex. the greens have very deep, detailed, and nuanced lives and stories that lead to them being very complex characters that can't be put into a box. Alicent was a child bride who had lost her mother young became a mother young and suffered at the hands of power and men all her life. her children were affected by this and the world they were forced to grow up in throughout their lives. even individually her kids are drastically different; aegon the child who was forced into a life he did not want and suffered due to his father neglect and mother pain. Helaena who was never understood and grew up treated like an oddity. Aemond who was never seen to his full potential, always ignored or looked over, angry throughout his life. each of them has strengths and weaknesses, flaws and benefits, they're imperfect but never completely horrid. they're also never simplified (not entirely, even when the plot and writers seek to simplify them) to the point that they put on a moral pedestal or made straight evil (i'd even argue that the attempts of the writer to oversimplify them as evil and in the wrong makes them 10x more fascinating). I find TB characters tended to miss the mark on that, always put in the moral light, not even allowed a moment to reflect on their actions, lives, or positions in any nuanced or meaningful way, so they always just feel dull. they're also out on a moral highground that they can never be budged from, which makes them harder to like and honestly, really boring. they get away with everything instead of being emotionally and morally nuanced.
secondly, they're more morally "right". I will never say that any of the greens are perfect, they are far from it (with the exception of Helaena and her kids, who have done literally nothing to anyone, but I digress). what I will say, 9/10 times there is some level of reasoning that has some level of reasoning. Alicent always tries to do whats best for everyone, all throughout the series she tried to do best by the court, the king, her children, the realm, and Rhaenyra. did she always succeed? no, but she always tried and her mistakes were almost always honest. I will say she held resentment towards Rhaenya, but honestly, I can't blame her. Rhaenyra's lies and behavior hurt Alicent over and over again so for her to be angry is expected.when it came to succession, Alicent backed Rhaenyra until it was made clear she and Daemon would be a threat to her children's lives and even than she held mercy for Rhaenyra. Aegon's drinking can be blamed on the abuse and neglect he suffered at Viserys, Otto, and Alicent's (though the abuse and neglect from his mother is insanely different and nuanced. she perpetuated her pain onto him because she couldn't heal herself. so I hesitate to call it abuse, cause its so much more complicated than that) hands. though nothing will justify his rape of Dyana, I personally think it was a bad add in on the writers part, and leave it at that. Aemonds rage after years of being ignored doesn't entirely justify what he did to luke, but he had reason for his cruelty after years of Luke (and jace tbh) being cruel just because they could. TB characters tend to do terrible things in response to either A. nothing B. their own terrible things. Daemon kills who he wants when he feels like it, even for stating facts. Rhaneyra will lie and hurt those around her to protect her bastard children. both of them conspire to protect themselves and allow themselves to be wed, really just cause. while there are times they have their reasons, its a lot less of the time, and typically the backing to their actions, is they were trying to unbury themselves from within their own graves. (to preface, I don't care about rhaenyra sleeping around, it doesn't bother me, but its the fact that she will hurt everyone around her to protect her lies, allowing a child to be maimed and people to be murdered)
thirdly, they're my vibe. I like morally complex character, who are, to be frank, pathetic. I like characters with complex trauma's and issues, who aren't perfect people but its not entirely their fault. I would much rather watch a whole show about alicent, a child bride who tries so hard to be a good wife, queen, and mother while not prepared for any such role. Aegon who is a boy with severe mommy and daddy issues, a drinking problem, a flawed past, and constantly wet eyes. Helaena an ignored girl who has suffered for no better reason then her family. and Aemond, a boy who was tormented, bullied, maimed, and made stronger by it at the cost of his compassion and emotional stability - over a nepo baby who was coddled by her father, her murderous husband with a knack for unneeded violence, and her similarly coddled children (the show boiled them down to this, in my opinion). one is simply more up my alley than the other. I want character that need to be dissected, who have suffered, who hurt me to look at.
also, team black created almost all of their own problems. seeing as the main source of contention had to do with Rhaenyra's kids being bastards, which was Rhaenyra's problem, which she caused, and kept digging and digging that grave (faking Laenors death just so she could marry daemon, turning the blame on aemond when luke maimed him furthering the divide amongst the house, trying to wed Helaena to Jace putting her in danger, trying to take the driftmark throne and killing Vaemond for a claim her sons did not have, etc,) till viserys's death, earns her a lot less pity from me. at the end of the day, her being a woman was only a needle in a haystack worth of problems she caused herself that hurt her claim. if she had just strived to create to connection with ancient and her kids, and didn't make herself look like a threat to everyone who lessened her claim (which alicents kids would be the first people to be taken out) alicent would have backed like she had all season and there would have been no war, maybe conflict, but no war.
theres also the effect of the fans on my opinion. I have faced more cruelty, terrible media analysis, and outright ableism/misogny/(blood and sexual based) purist ideology/etc. from the TB fans then I have ever witness by TG fans. TB fans have ruined almost all of the TB characters for me in more ways than I can count, so I will say I am very biased.
thats why I'm team green. as a whole they are simply more appealing, their stories are more interesting, demand more attention to detail and emotional understanding, and from my point of view were the "right" side to be on in the war (the war was wrong on both sides, but my chips lie in the favour of the greens).
#THESE ARE ALL MY OPINIONS IF YOU DONT LIKE IT IGNORE THIS POST. MY ACCOUNT. MY EXISTENCE AS A WHOLE.#BETTER YET. IF YOU REALLY DONT LIKE MY OPINION. BLOCK ME.#I dont want drama. so dont bother me if you disagree#and to clarify discourse and conversation (even if we disagree) =/= arguing. name calling. harassment#if you can be constructive and respectful even while disagreeing your fine to stay#(the fact I have to clarify this in this fandom is embarrassing...)#defintly could have gone more in depth and better explained some things#but I'm tired and know if I don't answer this now I won't ever cause I'm a chronic procrastinator#so this is the best y'all are getting#the pity I have for all of them compared to any of the TB fans is honest to god my entire reasoning#but so many people don't understand them at all so I can't just say that#and I say this as someone who on my first watch was swayed by the intentional moral framing to hate the Greens and support the Blacks#with my whole chest. but I've grown and reflected and rewatched the show and realized I was wrong.#so I've been on both sides of the argument#I know what I'm taking about#pro team green#pro alicent hightower#I'm damn near anti TB/Rhaenyra#but I say lukewarm feelings on them to be more accurate#alicent hightower#aegon ii targaryen#aegon targaryen#aemond targaryen#helaena targaryen#rhaenyra targaryen#daemon targeryan#luke velaryon#jace velaryon#not tagging TB I like my life and sanity#they're so mean all the time and in the last week I've been harassed by them multiple times

“the white hart scene was showing us rhaenyra is divinely chosen to sit on the iron throne for a shitty girlboss moment”
idk how people come to this conclusion beyond the fact that a lot of people wanted the show to flesh out and empathize with the characters the way f&b doesn’t, but are mad the show decided to flesh out rhaenyra even though she’s one of the main characters, bc they’re too dedicated to her as The Born Evil Queen bc that’s how she’s been treated by fandom since the princess and the queen came out.
it’s not just “she sees the white hart and it means she’s divinely chosen” that’s such a basic, surface level reading. for her part, the point is not just that she sees the white hart, but that she recognizes it’s personhood, it’s beauty, and it’s uniqueness, and spares it’s life in empathy. the point is that she slaughters the boar in self defense and brings it home to her people but is scorned for the messy way she did it. it’s not just that she’s “divinely chosen” it is that she can recognize the fear and humanity (so to speak) in another being and can empathize with it enough to let it live even though killing it may make her look really good in front of the lords. she does the moral thing because she is capable of empathy despite what the lords may say, a clear hint to the last episode where she attempts to do the right thing by avoiding war despite pushback from the black council.
on the other hand, she kills the boar - she is just as capable as any man of great violence when she feels threatened, and equally capable of a vindictive sort of violence that all the men of her house (and many of the other houses) are capable of. she brings them an animal she killed by her own hand and they are disgusted; the greens will strike first at every opportunity never realizing that she is capable of much greater violence bc a woman being capable of being violent is not something that would ever occur to them. they gladly named her princess of dragonstone to stop daemon from being heir but they are disgusted by her independent mind despite it being the exact reason they named her heir.
but just as important is viserys’ killing of the red hart. the white hart ran from his woods while the red hart is held down by his advisors for him to kill without viserys doing any of the work; still, he has to try twice to kill it, and only with the hand rotting from contact with the throne is he capable of taking its life. like robb’s messy execution of lord karstark being the definitive sign that he’s utterly lost control of the war, viserys having to be coached step by step and handed this “win” on a silver platter only to bungle it anyway is a definitive sign that he’s lost control of his court and of the politics in westeros. and as robb’s dark, shadowy parallel, viserys too will not live to see the bloody climax of a war he helped kick off.

I absolutely hate the narrative that the fandom has constructed, that Rhaenyra was perfectly justified in having an affair with Harwin Strong and birthing his bastards because Viserys “forced” her to get married to a man who would never be able to have children with her, he should’ve just let her marry Daemon way back then.
One, just because Laenor is gay doesn’t mean that he can’t father children. Perhaps sleeping with Rhaenyra would be difficult and distasteful to him, but there have been pleeeeeenty of gay and lesbian people throughout history who have been able to conceive children and have families. If my babygirl Alicent can lay back and think of Westeros while a rotting corpse of a man ruts on top of her enough times to have four children with him, then goddamn Laenor can suck it up and get his wife pregnant just one fucking time Jesus Christ. They made an agreement to do their duty (produce legitimate heirs, both for the iron throne and the driftwood throne) and neither of them held it up, that’s on them and no one else.
Two, Viserys only forced Rhaenyra to marry Laenor after she had already irredeemably fucked up, and squandered the incredible, and incredibly rare, opportunity that he gave her to choose her own husband. She didn’t take her marriage tour seriously, she mocked and belittled the men who came to try for her hand, and she cut the tour short by months. If she wanted Harwin Strong so fucking badly she could’ve married him! She had the perfect moment to choose him and be happy, but no…instead she decided to let her married uncle strip her half naked against a wall in a brothel in flea bottom in front of dozens of people. Viserys took away her choice, and married her to someone politically expedient, as a punishment for her own actions and because he could no longer trust her judgment.
Three, why the fuck would Viserys consent to marrying Rhaenyra to Daemon? I mean, really. The only goddamn reason why Viserys named Rhaenyra heir in the first place was so that he could disinherit Daemon. For all that Viserys said to her in front of Balerions skull, he didn’t suddenly change his views on women’s rights and he didn’t discover some previously unknown level of competency in Rhaenyra. Viserys wanted Daemon away from the throne and Rhaenyra was his only other option, and that’s it. Considering that, why would he willingly set Daemon up to be king consort?
Rhaenyra was not a victim in this situation and her marriage to Laenor is not something that happened to her. As far as I’m concerned, she fucked around and found out.

the weird thing about the sarah hess interview (there are a lot of weird things about that interview but if i talked about all of them this would be the length of a phd dissertation) is that, like, if you want us to give some sympathy to aegon and acknowledge the complexities behind him not wanting to rule but wanting it and his relationship with alicent and his siblings and rhaenyra and all that without the audience getting hung up on him being a rapist, don’t write him being a rapist? you are a writer on the show sarah, you’re the one who decides and this was an easily solvable problem
#personal#house of the dragon#this is especially galling because i actually quite like the rest of what they're doing with aegon#like for one the actor is quite good he's one of the few parts of that horrid domina show that i actually like#for two everything that was goin on in sunday's episode was doing a lot#like his scene with aemond and then with alicent where he asks if she loves him and his coronation#and then with rhaenys and meleys when alicent steps up to protect him and all that it was solid work for the character#and his relationships with the people in his life#so you could have quite literally just nixed the rape thing and it wouldn't have even mattered? this isn't affecting the plot at all??#i'd say she can't write him well but i don't think she can write any of these characters well#like she wants us to woobify aegon but after writing him doing vile shit#she isn't giving anything for helaena beyond 'is a dragondreamer and mayyyyybe autism coded'#(and whether or not that's offensive is for someone else as i'm not autistic and can't speak to that)#she flattens out all of rhaenyra's bad traits but makes her a stupid politician#she HATES daemon for whatever reason why is why so much of that bullshit surrounding ep 6 happened#she (and the rest of the writers) have put no effort into giving any depth to corlys or rhaenys or ANY of the velaryon kids#just weird writing choices that are basically the writers getting in their own way#because there's good characterizations here#as i've said everything else with aegon was interesting (and that scene with him encouraging jace with his dragon was v sweet)#and helaena being a dreamer is good and daemon and rhaenyra and alicent are also characters with amazing complexities#and this thing they're doing with daemon in particular and his whole 'wants to be loved' shtick is fun#but they can't get out of their own way and do weird fucking nonsense#and then complain when the audience doesn't get it#you are the person making the story you can bend this story to your will you know!!!!! you can write these characters!!!

The Bastards of Waters
a/n: this is inspired by a fic called watch the world burn by mylordstrong on ao3:)
Summary: Lucerys is bastardized by a king Aemond Targaryen to become Lucerys Waters, who births him bastard sons. Those sons are forced to journey to the Red Keep, away from their beloved mother and homely manse after the King demands them brought to him, as his Stag Queen has only ever birthed him girls in their 15 years of marriage. Luke, humiliated and angry, warns and prepares his children of the dangers they’ll be facing once they step foot within their hateful father’s castle.
a/n 2: uh, luke’s in his “alicent era with a hint of rhaenyra losing her mind era” is all I’m saying for this :)
•._•._•._•._•
•._•._•._•._•
“Keep your brothers in line, Daemon, never let them out of your sight, never let them be alone with anyone in the Keep,” Luke whispers to his eldest, as he clutches the teen’s face harshly. It was the first time Daemon had ever felt pain in his mother’s hold - it was always soft, warm and maternal. He couldn’t blame his faultless mother, he was worried for his children going into unknown and hostile territory after all.
Daemon’s hands shot up to grip his loving mother’s fingers gently, prying them from his face to hold within his own, “I will ensure my brothers never know pain in the Keep, and I promise they’ll be safe and protected as long as I’m still around, mother.”
He can feel his kind mother’s hands shaking, as his eyes stared back into his soft mother’s dark milky hues.
“…All right, I’ll be holding you to that promise,” Luke rasps out, as he frees himself from his son’s tight grip. He cups Daemon’s cheeks, gently this time, with enough warmth he could see his son physically melt in his palms. “Bring you brothers here, I need you all here to tell you of what to expect in that viper’s den.”
“Yes, mother.”
._._._._._.
After getting his brothers into the manse’s main room, all sitting on the sofa, Luke rants and warns his sons of the Red Keep’s dangers.
“You mustn’t be alone nor trust anyone in the Keep, everyone there’s no better than the people in Flea Bottom. They lie, kill, cheat, steal and brag - they will cause you harm and death and suffering. Trusting a person in the Keep, and being vulnerable with any of them is a death sentence in that wretched place,” he starts, pacing back and forth while biting his nails red. “You mustn’t make any mistake, if you do, they will pounce on you for it, humiliate you for it - be as perfect as you can be, and watch and protect each other’s backs. The only ones you can trust in the Keep are yourselves and each other, never forget that.”
Luke can see the fear and hate erupting in the eyes of his children. “Good,” he thought, “that hatred and fear shall keep them alive and protected within the Cursed King’s grasp.”
He knows what he’s doing is wrong, that installing more hate and fear to fester within his own sons might lead to drastic consequences, but he couldn’t careless.
He birthed his sons alone, he taught his sons alone, he entertained his sons alone, he raised his sons alone. If anyone had any problems with how he raised them, full of nothing but spiteful, bitter and frightful contempt for nearly everyone in Westeros - then they should’ve never left him alone to raise his own children as he sees fit.
Luke was quite glad. While he had few friends and loyal followers, he still had allies he knew he could trust.
The many former gold cloaks loyal to his step-father, Daemon Targaryen, trained his sons and vowed to protect both Luke and them - and to join their rebellion when the time comes to fruition. Two of his mother’s handmaidens, who were there for all of her births - and her death - had vowed to ardently stay beside Luke for when the Greens fall, and he or one of his sons takes the throne.
The White Worm - Lady Mysaria - and the whores of Westeros, whom never achieved the peace and equality they were promised by the Black Queen as a result of her death from the traitorous Greens. Nettles, whom seeks revenge for the death of Daemon Targaryen, vows to see the dragon Vhagar and her rider fall in disgrace and dishonor.
Rhaena and Baela, whom quietly gathered allies within the Free Cities, and raised Morning in secrecy away from prying eyes and ears. And the Starks and Arryns, disgraced Houses for their loyalty to the true Queen, Rhaenyra Targaryen, had vowed to see and support Lucerys Waters, the last living son of the rightful heir, sit on the Iron Throne - even if their devotion and fealty were done in secret codes and whispers.
Luke sighs as he halts his rants. Cupping his hands together, he raises them to his face to cover his vicious expression from his beloved sons. Turning his eyes to them, he gently brings his children together, and grips the hands of his youngest, staring in the eyes of all his sons. He finally lets out a final warning in a pale and muted voice; “When the King’s stag wife births the son of the blood of the dragon that he wants, flee as fast and as far away as you can - He will not hesitate to kill all of you, and he will not hesitate to kill me, your mother, either. That man is our family’s ruin and cause of suffering. Do you understand, my loves?”

for all the parroting about loving evil characters and wishing they were worse and hating the morality argument, team green does not like the fact that their favs aren’t well liked, nor cared about that much 😗
#house of the dragon#hotd#like no one is going to tear alicent from your hands#she ain’t real#none of them are but yall choose them#yall choose to like this characters and defend them so do and don’t get mad when you get eaten up by the majority#‘i’d go on about why I don’t like rhaenyra but id sound like a westerosi peasant.’ ??????#and that doesn’t concern you???#you ain’t gotta like her enjoy the characters you want but#AND THIS IS A BIG BUT#but if you are going to admit to hating her for weird ass standards that the book and author are telling you is unjust and unfair than maybe#just maybe. you are the one who missed the point#maybe. just maybe. you hate her because many can recognize the unjust system and nature of Westeros and have no problem with it being killed#maybe you hate that no one cares about your favs past the dance but many do care about the characters you hate??#or maybe you can’t stand a bad bitch having people who will defend her through everything even if your favs don’t have that#who knows but back to the main plot here#you chose them. you sit here and give whatever argument you want but it’s not a good one and you know it#‘she has bastards?’ the people who want to destroy her created those rumors.#‘she married daemon?’ people who hated him put aside their differences for him because it wasn’t about him#‘she lazy and spoiled.’ your favs son or your fav is literally the same if not worse#you don’t have good arguments none and you all know that#idk but yall have deluded yourselves into thinking the greens were popular#then get hit by the broke baltimore bridge when you remember that not even half the fandom likes these guys#the greens being so unpopular even after the showrunners sent a clean up crew made it clear that the personalities weren’t the issue#sympathetic or not they are the bad guys. they are the antagonists. THEY ARE NOT THE SIDE THE MAJORITY IS ROOTING FOR.#their actions are the reason they aren’t like and they are worse than whatever rhaenyra has done to piss you off#deal with it and love them as villains or wtf up and cry. i don’t know just deal with it without bitching.

Atp i am certain that Aegon and Aemond were completely obsessed with Rhaenyra in the book lmao
I 100% think they totally are, anon. Alicent was so dedicated into passing down the hate that it kinda had a boomerang effect lol
I'm telling you anon, my usually delusional ships always have some tiny foundation to build on

“alicent making homophobic remarks the night of laena’s funeral isn’t cool considering laenor was shown to be heavily grieving his sister and didn’t deserve to be attacked during it (not to mention it was an obvious ploy on alicent’s part to divert attention from her committing literal treason).”
“b-bUT WHAT ABOUT DAEMON AND RHAENYRA FUCKING-“
i’m not gonna lie i don’t particularly care that they had sex that night. was it disrespectful? for sure. did it harm anyone for them to do it? it, in fact, did not. two consenting adults having sex away from prying eyes and keeping to themselves < an entitled boy purposely calling a girl at her mother’s funeral (whom he had never interacted with before) a pig and ridiculing her grief. laena’s storyline was cut short because the writers decided she wasn’t important enough to make into a proper character that isn’t at the mercy of other characters (it’s something i’m forever going to be salty about, daemon and rhaenyra loved her with all their hearts and were absolutely devastated when she passed) but out of those two scenarios who do you think she would be more upset with?
the people who bring this up in retaliation cannot handle alicent taking any criticism whatsoever. in all honesty i wouldn’t even care if her fans would just say ‘yeah, it was shitty. don’t really care though.’ it would at least save me the time of reading think piece after think piece on why alicent deserved to get her lick back against rhaenyra for her lot in life (caused by otto and viserys) by focusing on her pain rather than her son’s. these are the same people who try to claim that most of rhaenyra’s children and step children secretly hate her, due to wanting ‘complex and nuanced relationships’ to occur (they actually also can’t handle that rhaenyra was a great mom all around to all of her kids, and that maybe they need to be focusing those feelings on the green kids with their parents instead). let’s be serious for just one moment: it makes more sense that the children who were neglected by one parent and abused by the other having complicated familial feelings than children who were (for the most part) raised in a relatively stable and loving environment.

It’s the hypocrisy for me because if people are gonna complain about the show whitewashing Rhaenyra and Daemon (tbh I wouldn’t be so sure about Daemon since the show had him kill his first wife which may not have happened in the book and erased some of his more redeeming qualities like his relationship with Laena but w/e) then maybe they shouldn’t have been showering so much praise at the writers for doing the absolute mother of all character rehabilitations on Alicent instead keeping her as a one-dimensional evil stepmother who makes snide remarks about her teen stepdaughter possibly being groomed. Because that characterization for Alicent would’ve been far more ~accurate~ to the source material but I don’t believe that’s actually what y’all care about.
Then there’s all the call outs about the show’s handling of the Velaryons as black and how insensible it has come off as, which don’t get me wrong, is completely true but I didn’t see y’all concerned when the show took the canonical close relationship with romantic undertones that Laena (now played by a black woman) had with Rhaenyra and gave it instead to Alicent. On the contrary y’all were praising the show to the moon and back and gushing about the “lesbian divorce drama” so again, not so concerned about the source material or black characters being mistreated and sidelined, are we?
And just to be clear, the show could have turned Daemon and Rhaenyra into mustache-twirling villains with no redeeming or sympathetic qualities whatsoever and Alicent and Aegon could be innocent angels who have never done anything wrong in their lives and guess what? The throne would still be Rhaenyra’s by rights. Yes, the Dance of the Dragons is a horrible conflict caused by a bunch of morally reprehensible nobles veering for power and willing to do despicable things in order to achieve it, and yet at the heart of the matter remains the fact that society is sexist and simply Won’t Let A Woman Rule. Rhaenyra was the heir and was usurped by Aegon because of misogyny, everything that happened afterwards doesn’t negate that simple truth.
But anyways, none of that matters because f&b is an unreliable source and we can’t trust anything it says ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ so yes Rhaenyra is in every single way better than her younger half-brother, who’s a pathetic little wet-rag r*pist, and the green fraction is gonna support that pathetic little wet-rag r*pist because they hate women and children born outside the sanctity of marriage that much. Galaxy brain level take on the writers’ part. Truly immaculate lmfao.

I just realized what's wrong with the Targaryen wigs in HotD: they don't look like Targaryen hair, they look like they were stolen from the Malfoys. They all share one (1) or at best two wigs in toto and it makes them look like freaking Lucius Malfoy clones
#jokes aside episode 1 was quite good (yes i finally caved in and started watching the fire lizards show)#there were many nice touches that made me go 'mmmmh good stuff.'#1. the juxtaposition of aemma's horrific death in childbirth/the knights killing each other at the tournament#clearly reminiscent of that quote from one of brienne's chapters... heh now i can't fully remember it in english#2. THEY NAME-DROPPED THE SONG OF ICE AND FIRE (which was never even remotely referred to in got)#the whole thing about aegon and the prophecy has been a particularly favorite fan theory of mine for years and i'm happy it's canon#fake lizard monarchs haters gonna hate :))#tho it's VERY bittersweet considering the got finale... like the prince that was promised was *spins roulette*#a stark all along? like randomly? (and no obviously i'm not talking about jon. he *is* half targaryen after all)#and let's not forget about the true heir being put down like a mad bitch because d&d liked jon better (since he's a man)#and were like 'revolutionary who wants to help people/actually abolished slavery in another continent bad. let's enforce the status quo :)))#(also the double standards. war crimes are okay only if other nobles do it - especially the starks. if you have a dragon and are a woman#and dare to be slightly mortally grey and/or ambitious... in 2 days you're gonna burn children alive!! because ofc.)#..... *cough cough* okay salty rant is over. let's go on with val's hotd first impressions#2. i didn't hate matt smith as daemon and he's particularly good at looking upset and/or sad but i still think he was miscast#3*#like he CAN act and it shows. but it's as if he were making an effort to appear more believable for this role#idk maybe he'll grow on me in the next eps. also his interactions with rhaenyra were a++ but that's nothing new#can't wait for this girl to fuck her uncle ig (...... what did i become skskksks)#4. i also liked rhaenyra&alicent's interactions. this is gonna be another tragic former besties to worsties for me to cry on :(((#5. i mostly liked the costumes. i liked how this is all about the patriarchy (at least so far). i liked the slight but still noticeable#references to the main show (the music. rhaenyra being an obvious dany lookalike.#lord stark pledging his fealty to her while viserys' voice over is speaking about the threat in the north.#viserys telling her 'promise me rhaenyra. promise me' in what i believe is an echo of lyanna's last words to ned... i think?#like it can't be accidental)#god i missed being excited over this stupid and gorgeous series#obv it helps that i actually never read fire&blood (should i?) and i'm only familiar with the events/characters from twoiaf#house of the dragon#val speaks#txt

thinking soo much how everyone on hotd twt and tiktok were so foul every week about alicent. the lack of empathy towards her character + determination to present her as a villain was so telling of a lack of critical analysis skills and black and white approach to characters. like i genuinely was so confused when i finally watched the show after weeks of seeing content in my feed about it because that was not what i was seeing

Ngl something about people stanning Rhaenyra & wholeheartedly supporting her as a BAMF anti-patriarchy protagonist but calling Alicent a myriad of names, belittling & disregarding her traumas etc. Grosses me out fr.
It doesn't surprise me because it happens quite a bit on social media but some of the shit I've seen people write without an ounce of self-awareness just baffles me. The lack of sympathy boggles my mind, seriously 😐
