Harmony: The Fall of Reverie
Tumblr media
Harmony is a visual novel set in a dystopian future where MK, a mega corporation, fully controls the small island of Atina. A young woman named Polly will suddenly be granted powers of precognition while becoming the link between our world and the world of deities, called "Aspirations".
If this VN brings very good ideas in terms of mechanics and shows a very neat artistic direction, some details make it miss the title of essential imo.
❤ An original gameplay in the VN world; the power of precognition is visualized in the form of a flowchart called "Augural" where you can see almost all the branches in advance and the resolutions of the chapters. As a result, we can very well try to unlock the choices to reach the conclusion that we want. We could then believe that the game fails to surprise us but it's not so because seeing the future is one thing, but directing it is another; it is not always so simple as that to achieve our ends because the Augural has its own rules despite everything. As a result, I really found this mechanism ambitious and singular. ❤ Very well written characters all different from each other (the Aspirations are however much more endearing than the humans I think) and excellently dubbed! ❤ A magnificent artistic direction; the cinematics are incredible, the animation of the sprites is dynamic, the backgrounds are colorful and lively etc… ❤ A very good replayability given the many branches and several endings to unlock.
+/- The story is nice overall with its share of strong moments, but far too Manichean: the wicked, inhuman mega-corporation that is "thirsty for blood" even if it means sacrificing the population? I would have preferred a little more complexity in there. +/- The musical atmosphere is good but no more, not striking enough in my opinion.
✖ The last chapter is disappointing; we suddenly move away from the main characters to have a more global vision of the world, but suddenly it makes everything too impersonal and removes almost all the dramatic and emotional tension has built up so far. Also, the last scene I had before the credits seemed super abrupt, leaving me wanting more. ✖ If the idea of the Augural is excellent, the scenes that result from our choices are often very short, which makes us constantly come back to it, and that chops the story too much for my taste. I might have preferred less routes with longer scenes. ✖ At present, there are no "skip" options for scenes already played, which can be a bit of a pain to restart a game for the time being.
Harmony brings a little freshness to the Visual Novel landscape with its distinctive gameplay, but lacks just a little more maturity and fluidity in its storytelling. Still, it's a good game that I could easily get into again, like a good dream :)

DON’T NOD has announced “unique narrative experience” Harmony: The Fall of Reverie, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC (Steam). It will launch in June.
Here is an overview of the game, via DON’T NOD:
About
Harmony: The Fall of Reverie is a new narrative game from DON’T NOD. Players will be able to see into the future and make the best decisions for them as they try to restore balance between our world and Reverie, the world of the deities. Players will get to know a cast of loveable characters in this captivating story and universe rich in lore. The game is colorful, vibrant, and futuristic, with an original soundtrack by award-winning composer, Lena Raine.
In the very near future… MK, a mega corporation, is using its power to control the population of the Mediterranean city of Alma. Polly returns home to search for her missing mother after a few years abroad and soon discovers that her hometown has changed for the worse. She quickly realizes that she has a gift of clairvoyance that connects her to another world, Reverie, where the Aspirations of Humanity live: Glory, Bliss, Power, Chaos, Bond, and Truth. In Reverie, Polly becomes Harmony, a goddess who has the power to choose the Aspiration that will ultimately rule. There is a delicate balance between our world and Reverie that grows more precarious. It is up to you, as Harmony and Polly, to restore the balance between the Aspirations’ world and ours.
Humanity is at stake. To which destiny do you aspire?
A Unique Narrative Mechanic
Each action players take, as Polly or Harmony, will affect both worlds and open up different narrative paths. Players can see into the future with the Augural, a game board and visual representation of Polly’s gift of foresight. There they can explore the outcomes of possible choices, giving them visibility and agency to decide the fate of humanity. This unique narrative mechanic also gives the game a high replayability factor.
“We are excited to reveal Harmony: The Fall of Reverie at the Nintendo Direct,” DON’T NOD CEO Oskar Guilbert said in a press release. “It is a unique game in its narration with an incredible art direction. We hope players will find this experience stunning and refreshing and that the unique narrative will connect deeply with them. We can’t wait to show more soon.”

I'm going to recommend that you check out Harmony: The Fall of Reverie, not just to say go watch me play it, but also to say go play it yourself. It's a really neat game but I haven't seen it getting a ton of love. It's got a flowchart! I know how much Zero Escape fans love flowcharts!
Here we have Zero Escape characters as three of the Aspirations: Quark as Bliss, Alice as Power, and Phi as Truth. I guess I have a Virtue's Last Reward slant going here, so if I were to draw the other three, it would be Dio as Chaos, Luna as Bond, and VLR Sigma as Glory.
My Harmony: The Fall of Reverie playlist!

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie Releases Today!
Tumblr media
Happy launch day for DON'T NOD's Harmony: The Fall of Reverie!
Adding on to the previously released synopsis, here is some more info about the game's mechanics, characters, and setting:
"DECIDE YOUR DESTINY
As Polly, or Harmony, each action you take will affect both worlds and send you down sprawling narrative paths. See into the future and explore the consequences of possible choices in the Augural, a game board and visual representation of Polly's gift of foresight.
In pursuing whichever destiny you desire, you’ll also bond with and obtain crystals from the Aspirations. These will unlock different paths at important crossroads that will change how the thread of the story unravels, and ultimately the fate of humanity.
FIND THE NEW HEART OF HUMANITY
Whichever Aspiration comes to lead Reverie, with Harmony’s help, will also become the heart of humanity. Their personality and style of rule will change Reverie while also giving the people of our world a new direction too: when the link between worlds is stronger, Reverie has a bigger influence on the state of our world.
Glory, Bliss, Power, Chaos, Bond, and Truth are all wildly different entities with their own distinct personalities, goals, and opinions on how to make things better. You’ll get to know each of them as visit Reverie in your dreams as Harmony, but only you know best – as Polly – what your world needs.
A COLORFUL WORLD
As you play, revel in artistic direction that is bright, vibrant, and futuristic. Immerse yourself in the daily life of a Mediterranean city and get to know its people, with a cast of characters who are fully voiced and animated. Enjoy an enchanting soundtrack by award-winning composer, Lena Raine." (Taken from Nintendo eShop page)
.
.
.
School/work has been keeping me busy, so haven't had too much time to look at all the teasers DON'T NOD has been posting. Hope to start playing soon, but honestly, a little excited to go into this game mostly blind. Like I've said before, the visuals alone got me excited. Happy gaming!

the dontnod game that's... fine? i guess.
Tumblr media
harmony: the fall of reverie is a 2023 visual novel type of narrative game from the studio that's most well-known for the mainline life is strange series. (making it the most recent title that came up during my random generated game picks so far.) despite the mainstream attention on those games, dontnod's independently published games don't always get much attention, so it's not all that surprising that this one managed to mostly fly under the radar.
...perhaps it's also just not a game that has the power to gain any additional buzz beyond its existing niche audience, but we'll get there.
the game's story is somewhat convoluted to explain, but it goes something like this. you play as a character with mommy issues, who returns home after 5 years to find your mom missing. upon finding a necklace, you get transported into an alternative world, where you can talk to the so-called aspirations, the physical manifestation of concepts like bliss, truth, chaos, etc. turns out, their world is in danger, and it's all somehow connected to your mom's disappearance and possibly an evil corporation. plot ensues.
let's start with the positives! harmony has a very colorful art style that's a joy to see in the bleary washed out world of modern gaming. as a visual novel, it also delivers on the character models - the aspiration of chaos for instance is portrayed as this nonbinary twink wearing a crown, and i have no notes! great job, everyone!
Tumblr media
another thing i really enjoyed was the game's mechanics. most of the gameplay consists of small choices you can make in the story, which is displayed by a decision tree you can navigate. you can not only follow through where a choice would lead you, but if it locks you out of other choices in a given chapter, if it gives you items you can later use, etc. ultimately, the decision tree usually merges back together, so there's seemingly not that much of an impact you can make on the main storyline, but there are also consequences to your choices in later chapters, and it all adds together to determine your eventual ending.
in any case, i spent most of my time playing the game just looking at that decision tree, trying to figure out how to get the outcomes and scenes i want, and i had a blast with it! in a meta way, it's like looking directly at the algorithm tree that's behind the game itself, with its different twists and rules, that are fun to follow through and figure out - at least to someone who's just as puzzle-brained as me.
the game also has a very blatant and progressive political view, which is great, although it doesn't offer much incisive commentary in my opinion. in theory, i love that you and your gay leftist buddies are mostly just arguing between different anarchist methods to bring down the evil capitalist corporation that's literally called mono konzern - on the other, maybe bringing in some characters who are pilled on the capitalist propaganda would have helped open up the world, and make the struggle more tangible? idk, i'm not even sure, because the truth is, that's not the real problem with this or any other part of the game.
it's the writing.
and i know what you might be saying. 'a dontnod game with bad writing? gasp! never heard of such a thing!' but i don't think you understand. my issue with this game isn't that it has some cringey dialogue that is an acquired taste. no, my issue with this game, is that i don't think it does a good job communicating its own narrative through its writing.
for instance, there were situations where my impression of a scene was completely different from what the narration was telling me. i'm pretty sure that there were also contradictions in the story, that were just subtle enough that it drove me up the wall, because i wasn't sure if it was just me, misunderstanding something previously stated. our mother is simultaneously someone that nobody knew or cared about in the community, and a well-known poet whose work is taught in universities. also, she IS a big influential figure in the community after all. it may sound like a small detail, but for me, these small discrepancies kept adding up, and it took me out of the story again and again.
there was also a point early on that stayed with me, where i had to look up the game's 'codex' to figure out the relationship between two characters, because the game was trying to show-don't-tell-me but... sometimes you need some exposition, okay? if i spend an entire scene trying to figure out how two people are related instead of focusing on the scene itself, then you've done a bad job. (the relationship between the two characters btw was that our mother and her grandfather were living together and had a somewhat open relationship on our mother's end. good luck trying to write that organically into the scene.)
overall, it kind of felt like a script that was written by a freshman college student as a first draft. great achievement and all, but maybe do a few more edits? idk, i'm not a writer, you probably shouldn't listen to my professional advice, lol.
and to be fair, by the end, i think i actually got used to all the quirks, so it's not all that bad, but... yeah, i don't know how much i'd recommend this one. it takes a while to grow on you.
but hey, if you do decide to give it a shot, there is a bit of a surprise for the youtube video essay heads in the form of one of the actors voicing a pretty major role. so there's that.
the moral of the story is that girls don't want a career, they want a revolution and an nb twink chaos.

In honor of me having so much video game music downloaded on my phone that I ran out of storage and had to buy a new phone. My favorite track from each video game OST I have!
Bastion: Brusher Patrol (Such a bizarre clash of styles, I can't help but love this one. Shout-out to the part that sounds like Darren quietly scatting in the background.) (Also special shout-out to Build That Wall, probably my favorite vocal track in any Supergiant game)
Celeste: Scattered and Lost (I am such a normie for this choice but face it this track absolutely slaps.)
Chicory: A Colorful Tale: Song of the Wielders (I love how this song has actual lyrics but I still prefer to sing along with the Simlish version that Pizza and Chicory sing.)
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood: Illusion (First of all I love how every character in this game has their own theme I go feral for that kind of thing. Kurielle is probably one of the characters who stood out to me the least but by god is her theme gorgeous. I love the vocals and how a later track includes a sneaky reprise.)
Cuphead: Dramatic Fanatic (Tap dancing :D)
There are literally thirty of these so I'm doing a read more
Death's Door: The Grey Crow (A heartbreaking boss fight scored with the appropriate amount of anguish)
Deltarune: Cyber Battle (This melody is so underrated and ya know what, so are the characters associated with it. Sweet Cap'n Cakes forever.)
Elsinore: Donne, The Boat Boy (I love this song because it's associated with Lady Guildenstern, aka the best character in gaming full stop, but it's also just a fun little sea shanty that I think they made up for this game so I love that. Also has a lyrical version.)
Evergate: Police (Okay so the level with the police drones is one of the more frustrating ones in the game but the music is hauntingly beautiful so I give it a pass)
Going Under: trust fall (Marv is easily one of the most hateable video game antagonists of all time but damn if his boss theme doesn't slap)
Hades: Last Words (The rolling and the tolling of the bells bells bells bells bells)
Harmony: The Fall of Reverie: Reverie Ascendant (Lena Raine does these medley tracks so good man)
Hollow Knight: Dung Defender (By far the catchiest song about poop on my entire phone)
Ikenfell: Rose Thorns (So the insanely long final boss fight against Oxley overshadowed Aeldra's boss fight in my memory for a long time, but when I watched another playthrough and bought the OST I realized "Oh her theme bops SO much harder than his ever could")
Inscryption: A Final Duel (A hardcore remix of The Scrybe of Magicks, aka one of the only melodic tracks on the album and therefore the one every YouTube video about Inscryption uses in the background. I prefer the epic version just a bit more because honestly that Magnificus setpiece is the best moment in the game)
Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass: Fun, Sunny Day (A fun and silly track as the title suggests, elevated even more by the context in which it plays in the game. The area music alternates between this and the more somber Rainy Sunday to illustrate that Jimmy mother is bipolar [very cute and silly game])
Omori: Bready Steady Go (Like the absolute dipshit I am I actually completely missed the optional Orange Oasis when I played this game myself. Every Let's Player finds it somehow, though, and when they fight the Unbread Twins I invariably stand up and dance along to the boss music.)
One Step from Eden: Perpetual Motion (It's just a good-ass track y'all)
Ori and the Blind Forest: Conundrum (In a soundtrack of sweeping orchestral pieces, this more subdued version of theme that only plays during one small puzzle section might seem a weird choice. But I've always really liked it)
Ori and the Will of the Wisps: Kwolok's Malaise (Kwolok's leitmotif is perfect for a giant frog and the boss remix takes it to it's logical conclusion)
Paradise Killer: Go! Go! Style (This track makes me feel like I'm having a sugar rush. The whole OST does actually but this one especially)
Pyre: Path to Glory (It's just got a really unique vibe to it. I like it)
Scarlet Hollow: Avery (Chill and really beautiful. Avery themself is kind of a sleeper character at this point but I can't wait for Brandon to remix their theme when they get assimilated into a giant plant monster)
Slay the Princess: The Princess (Okay full disclosure I've only played this game once so I don't have the full context for a lot of the tracks on this OST. Maybe hearing them alongside their respective princesses will make me like them more, but for now the title theme is too iconic to beat.)
Sounds of Sympathy (the OST for the game anthology Essays on Empathy): Zen and the Art of Transhumanism (In the Essays on Empathy documentary, fingerspit talked about how she prefers writing obscenely long tracks so the loop doesn't get annoying. Unfortunately for her my favorite track on this album is only three minutes long. It's a lovely little bop.)
Spiritfarer: Mind Palace (I played Spiritfarer before any of the character updates were released, so I didn't get Daria's mind palace sequences in my game. And I mean, they look very platforming-heavy so I'm okay with that, but god this is a gorgeous piece.)
Transistor: Impossible (I think this is Royce Bracket's boss theme? I don't know when any of the tracks on this OST specifically play in game. Regardless of all that this one gets me pumped.)
Unavowed: One Man's Power (I couldn't find a video of this one, but it's gentle saxophone solo that plays when Logan Brown is introduced. I think it fits is character really well and just sounds really nice)
Undertale: Death by Glamour (Best song for best character, enough said)
Wandersong: Moonscape (God knows this game gave me a lot of great options to pick from, but I settled on this one because it's so uplifting.)
