Yesterday we lost one of the most influential manga artists of the 1970s and 80s with the death of Leiji Matsumoto. Link It's hard to adequately describe just how influential Leiji was to anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture.

  His work helped define several generations of fans, and his art work inspired countless other artists and creators.  May he sail the galaxies in peace.

Some sad news to share, friends - Leiji Matsumoto, the iconic creator of Space Battleship Yamato (aka Starblazers), Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, and many more, has passed away at the age of 85. A manga artist since the 50s who originally got his start in shoujo manga, Matsumoto’s works were a cornerstone of early anime fandom. American sci-fi fans of the 70s may not have known the terms “anime”, “manga”, or “cosplay”, but they knew and loved Matsumoto’s work, which was many fan’s first exposure to anime back in the day. One of the first recorded “cosplay” gatherings in the US was of fans dressed as mostly Leiji Matsumoto characters!

In other parts of the world, they also fell in love with Matsumoto’s work: as in France, where Harlock was known as Albator, and won the hearts of many fans. So much so that Matsumoto won many prestigious awards there, and would eventually be knighted in 2012 by the French government. French electronic duo Daft Punk was highly influenced by his work, and in 2001 collaborated with Matsumoto to release anime music videos (and eventually a feature-length film version called Interstella 555).

Modern anime & manga owe much to his work, as he was THE pioneer of space opera and what he liked to call “boy’s romance” stories--”romance” in the literarily sense--full of angst, heroism, and fighting for independence while celebrating nature, brotherhood, and friendship. He helped many people learn to never give up on themselves and their dreams, no matter how fantastical they may seem.

May his spirit travel on, in a new adventure in the endless sea of stars.

I drove 4 hrs (because of traffic) to richmond Va. Yesterday with @underworldqueen13 for galaxycon. The primary reason was because CareyJones was there and i ADORE Black Krrsantan so i HAD to go. I got to his table and he was still at lunch but i decided to wait and as i looked at his table i see Gordian Shard there. I didnt know he was the suit actor for him. His agent said yea he got them printed the week the episode dropped and we havent sold a single one. I was like....i might have to. I am after all standing in like dressed as a pirate twi lek. I have been rocking that cosplay for two or three years and everyone always say's "what did disney put pirates of the carribean in star wars now?" And shit like that in the most shitty ways. I always pointed out characters like Hondo and recently Phee and Gordian Shard taking it a step further and reminding them that space pirate captain harlock was literally classic pirate look just on a space ship. So as i waited i decided HELL YES im getting gordian shard. The agent seemed surprised.

When Carey first saw it on the table he thought his Agent laid it out to do a marker test and then was told nope someone bought it. At first he seemed kinda agitated when he returned he didnt even look at me and just signed it and handed it back. He had no line outside of me and three others. After he kinda got into the swing of it and started talking more i went back up and told him I really did LOVE Gordian Shard. And he finally took in my pirate. We talked for a few minutes about how Han solo has always been described as a pirate and He brought up Hondo. Im glad I went back to talk with him because it was awesome to find someone that wand MORE pirates in star wars.

Also i think @soclonely would appreciate this because i saw the posts about gordian on their page before i saw the season opener and it made me drop everything and watch it immediatly

6. Favorite secondary character?

Easily Ankh. I haven't had a character have my brain in a death-grip this hard since Maya from Captain Harlock. Toei really got me with him. I could easily gush about him for ages, and his character arc was one of the best I've seen in a good while. I also want his gender.

I just love this bird so damn much. He's easily one of my top 5 favorite characters of all time in general now. I think about Ankh a lot, he has permanent residence in my brain now. I am very normal about him.

In terms of secondary riders its a toss up between Date, Gotou, Keiwa, and Yuuto. I love each of them very much for different reasons and it's hard for me to pick a favorite out of the four.

17. If you could cosplay any character, who would it be?

I really want to cosplay Ankh, it's something I hope to do one day. I'd love to cosplay his human form but also think it would be very funny if I just had the arm and a green fullbody suit. Or the transparent PNG texture.

And I also want to cosplay Eiji too! I love Eiji and his outfits just look so comfy too.

19. If you could go back and change one show, what would you change?

I have a lot of gripes with OOO 10th, not even just the ending.

It bugs me a lot is how Ankh possesses Shingo again... and he's just forgotten outside of one "hey where is Shingo?", despite the fact Ankh can't keep continuing to possess him being a major point of conflict in the third act.

That was what lead to Ankh's betrayal! ...And now he can just possess him again with no problem??

OOO 10th also just forgets what was established in Megamax and that it even happened, and Heisei generations final too. It feels like this all took place 10 years later directly after the show in an alternate timeline.

The king also comes back from nowhere, the other characters (both humans and greeed) don't get to do much either, and even though while Eiji sacrificing himself is not OOC... from a narrative sense Eiji's death doesn't work and completely disregards his entire arc and growth.

I love Goda though, I would love to see him explored more.

And that ending? Keep Ankh in Eiji's body. Have it be a sad, yet hopeful & open ending that Eiji will come back one day like with Shingo. It's like the end of the show but now the roles are reversed.
