The platform of the Hallesches Tor metro station in Berlin
Evgeny Henkin / Henkin Brothers Archive Association
In pictures: Slices of a life long lost
Photographs from Berlin in the 1920s and ’30s show scenes at once iconic and timeless.
For decades, a number of old boxes of photo negatives sat in my family’s storage untouched. Aside from the photographers themselves — my great-grandfather Yakov Henkin and his elder brother Evgeny — no one knew what had been captured on these rolls of film.
The technology to develop these long forgotten images was new and hard to come by. It was even harder to convince someone to agree to help us uncover what had been kept hidden for so long. They were just as shocked as we were to discover what these boxes — hidden in the recesses of family memory and the corners of an old apartment for so long — contained: around 7,000 negative frames documenting, in vivid detail, the everyday life of Berlin in the 1920s and '30s.

Beatsteaks
Oct 27, 2007 - PAUK (Zagreb)
My friend (I) was getting into the local punk scene and started hanging out with some guys who had their own bands and religiously went to any punk-ish concert. Beatsteaks was one of these shows.
I joined that crowd since I really liked Beatsteaks’ happy music, and was listening to their Limbo Messiah and Smack Smash albums a lot back then. We all met before the show in the area since the concert venue is located in the student housing complex (meaning, mostly non-stop partying). Eventually, we went inside the venue.
Overflow, a Croatian band, was playing as the support act and I don’t remember it the best, either because I was tipsy or not familiar with their music (or both).
Beatsteaks were really a new level of pure joy, a band with such positive energy and catchy songs. As soon as they appeared on stage, the crowd got crazy. We were quite at the front and got to enjoy the show to the fullest. One of the songs at the start was Jane Became Insane, and already chaos ensued, as we threw our hands in the air and sang. Hello Joe, Summer, I Don't Care As Long As You Sing, and who knows what else was played somewhere in the middle of the show. Even Hey Du (goddamn, who knew that one day I’d actually live in Berlin and regularly pass through Hallesches Tor)!

And then, the whole thing exploded with Cut Off The Top and Let Me In somewhere at the end of the show. And that was it, it was finished too fast. When the band was leaving the stage, I touched hands with Arnim, hooray!
We were tired and very sweaty from the show. I can’t confirm nor deny if partying continued afterwards.
I adored this show, and it’s still one of my favorite ones to this day.
Rating: 500/10, spark of joy

Berlin Buildings
Like many old cities, the centre of the original city is surrounded by gates, named after where the road from that gate leads to when you leave the city by that gate. In total there were 18 of these gates and although most no longer stand, a few of them are remembered in the name of underground stations. Hallesches Tor at the southwestern point of what is now Berlin Mitte was presumably the gate…

Type Hunters - Berlin
Tumblr media
German typographer Erick Spiekermann takes us on a tour of Berlin. At the start of the tour Erick details the classic Fraktur typeface and how it was adopted by the Nazi regime and modified by straightening it out and making it more regimented, he mentions that the use of this type has become a stereotype with Germany. Erick then speaks about the Berlin rail system and how different eras from Art Nouveau to modern times are represented by the signage. There are then examples shown that also represent different political ideologies
Prussian from 1871-1919
The Weimar Republic from 1918-1933
Nazi from 1933-1945
Two Germany’s from 1945-1990
 Federal republic from 1990- current
Erick then shows a Ministry building that he says is a convergence of three political systems the pompous grandiosity of the the Nazi’s built a monumental edifice, the East German communists added a boring mural in a socialist style and the terrible pragmatism of the Federalist Republic added a plaque that uses the Arial typeface. Erick is scathing at the use of Arial and playfully quips that at least it was made in brass. Eric is now on a roll and can be seen scowling at a Hallesches Tor plaque. He eviscerates it, first calling the red colour choice superfluous, the letters hastily thrown together and backhandedly calls it original and unique “very Berlin”. He then gives some pointed complaints about the shape of the letters being too closed having a lack of contrast and the e and the s don't even belong to the same typeface. He then calls it naive and that people like it because they think that they could make it. The episode finished with Erick talking about his rebranding of the German transit system after the reunification in 1990 his typeface was named transit and based off the Frutiger type. The colour yellow was chosen for its established ties to German transport.
