your next quantum leap
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Message: hey, first “big” reading in a long time, I hope that you guys haven’t been feeling like I’ve neglected doing readings I’ve been undergoing a lot of changes and working a lot behind the scenes as of lately! Thank you so much for waiting and being patient with me! I love you and I hope that everything is going well and if it isn’t that it shall pass and you’ll receive peace very soon.
***
i.
pile one, your next quantum leap brings the gift of love and relationships or comes under the cover of love and relationships. You are receiving your ten of cups finally, divine love, true love, fulfillment, etc. or are in the process of preparing for it’s arrival. I see flowers as a representation of growth and transformation. Many of you are feminine energies. The flower of a plant is the seed bearing part of a plant, you’ve been planting seeds or are in the process of releasing them in order for them to be dropped down into the soil to grow. Many living organisms also help in the process of spreading the seeds of a plant by helping to disperse them. Someone you will love and someone who loves you is coming into your life (or for some of you is already present) and they will help you plant your seeds, and help you grow as well. The imagery in the picture for pile one is a woman standing in the center of a garden, she’s topless/nude and I feel like that represents vulnerability and receptivity. There is nothing but growth around her.
This upcoming season, throughout these next few weeks and months, you may need to learn to outgrow the habit of selling yourself short, minimizing your value or minimizing the possibility of miracles or things working out in your favor. There are gifts for you, there are blessings for you, there are manifestations for you to receive, the seeds that you’re planting will have grown and be ready to harvest but it’s up to you whether you’ll be collecting what you’ve grown and reaping the benefits of your hard work and cultivation. You’ve planted something, you should harvest it and put it towards your abundance and prosperity and let it bring you good things.
During this season, you may feel confused or disconnected from your intuition in a way, there’s a message here about not knowing what to do with what you’ll be receiving, feeling overwhelmed, or feeling as though you’re having to relearn everything you’ve ever known because your life has shifted so drastically. You asked for change, you asked for what you deserved and the universe gifted you exactly that. But because you’ve done things one way for a long time or have only received one thing for a long time, the gifts you receive may feel foreign to you, you’re about to shift into a new version of yourself. You’re finally shifting into your higher self. Transformation and rebirth are significant. You may feel passionate about children lately or motherhood. Or recieving lots of imagery or seeing lots of posts on social media about children, parenting and motherhood.
There’s a possibility you’ve gotten in arguments lately about what people deserve, what children deserve or what’s best for people or what’s best for someone in particular. There’s a diety who thinking of, I’m not super familiar with her, a Haitian deity named Ezili Dantor who protects women and children fiercely. This season you’ll be in the process of fully and wholly shifting into your feminine energy after a long time of having to switch back in forth from your masculine and feminine or having to step out of the energy of recieving and relaxation to push things into fruition or make things go in a way that you felt was right for you. Some of this behavior may have shown up frequently these past couple years in trying to force relationships to work or push people into being in alignment with you or giving you what you’ve deserved all along and/or even having to stand up and remove yourself from situations that weren’t serving you in order to open yourself up to recieving these gifts or open yourself up to moving into a period of ultimate rest and relaxation forever.
You’ll be working hard this season on building a foundation for yourself or continuing to work towards cultivating a life of prosperity, peace and abundance. You may be shifting your energy into your career, into your education or your finances. Whilst love is here, and you’re building your connections and are in flow and in tune with whomever this person may be, your external energy is focused on your material and physical world and preparing things for yourself. While your feminine energy is at ease, is being loved, is being fed on a soul level, your masculine energy is out creating a world for you, building a foundation, making a name. You’ve created balance. 👥. The wheel is turning in your favor, complete transformation, all blessings are coming in, the dam separating you from your manifestations and from everything you’ve earned all this time has began crumbling.
Oracle:
29 • Let Go • “The Blood Moon” • Full Moon • Mother : “the full blood moon is a time to let go. Here I painted the mother, breaking away from her past self, as represented in the shadow of herself, fading behind her. This mother is letting go of the past, and everything that haunts her soul, so she can move forward with the child that is inside her. it is time to let go of the past that has haunted you to this point. That is the person you used to be and even though that old self has allowed you to be the person you are today you are no longer that individual this card also represents that now is a perfect opportunity to release the negative factor in your life. This could be a person or a habit that harms your happiness or sense of self. Think about what you need to set free.”
39 • Personal Alchemy • “The Cold Moon” • Waning Moon • Crone: “ the waning, cold moon is a time for you to process the deep, embodied, yet personal inquiry of yourself as the crone is illustrated on this card she is reaching deep inside herself finding her soul represented in the glowing orb she holds within her chest. This indicates the time to start identifying the areas in your life where you want to make changes gather the resources to make those shifts plot out of plan, and then take steps to implement the new ideas, we engage with this process of change by breaking it up into small easily, implemented new habits. where in your life can you apply personal alchemy and start changing those patterns?”
7 • Explore • “The Crow Moon” • Waxing Moon • Maiden : “ the waxing crow moon is about exploring through your inner self to find what you may be missing within as this maiden is depicted walking through the forest, guided by her lamp glow, and her crow companion. She’s looking deep into the darkness she’s trying to find her true path and the courage within herself to move forward now is the time to explore yourself your surroundings, and even current connections you have with other people what new routes can you take to solve a current predicament you may be in? examine what is around maybe there’s a different path you can make such as a new job or a new class? this other avenue may guide you in the direction where you would like to be in life perhaps a connection with an acquaintance, or friend, may lead you to a unique opportunity.”
17 • Decisions • “The Mead Moon” • Full Moon • Mother: “ the full mead moon, is a time for decisions about how you harnessed the earths restless, energy and where you are going to apply it here the mother of the mead moon is depicted standing before two paths. She is looking upon these paths, deciding where she should refocus her life which will fulfill her soul. Time is up now is the time to choose one with conviction this card is a reliable indication that time is up, move forward and make that decision that has been bouncing around the back of your mind that decision that you’ve been hesitating to make act now to take steps toward a resolution to the problem, you have been mowing over, move forward in the direction that feels right in your soul.”
***
ii.
Pile two, your next quantum leap brings up the question of understanding your inner feelings, listening to your needs and desires and following and listening to your heart. There’s a message here about serving yourself Justice and exercising self love by allowing yourself to have what you’ve been asking/wishing for, or coming to terms with what you want and what you should do in order for you to be happy, prosperous, and fulfilled. This season you’ll be having some sort of breakthrough, coming to a conclusion, or coming up on a new idea. Whatever this new idea or decision might be for you may lead to communication between you and others or you and someone and particular. Emphasis on new communication. You may say something you may have not usually have said or you may say something or express something or communicate something you had not intended to say or share for a long while or until way later.
There could also be new news you’ll be sharing with your friends and family and loved ones regarding something incredibly significant. While one side of you on an internal scale will be focused on serving yourself Justice, focused on self love and the cultivating of a space space on for yourself and others and preparing you for the overcoming of a new obstacle or the receiving of a new opportunity. The other side of you, on an external scale will be focused on gaining financial independence, saving and investing money, or bringing more stability to your financial life. You could be saving up for something special, budgeting, or preparing to make a large financial investment or move soon. Some of you are masculine energies, and are shifting into the energy of a provider. You may be about to offer someone your cup or offer someone stability or commitment.
You could’ve been unsure about something or in the process of coming to conclusion(s). Throughout this season whatever this is will be heavily on your mind, and you’ll come to some sort of resolution or realization. Mental breakthroughs on whatever this is are in store for you within the next couple of months. You may be working through any deep seated fears, healing karma (detaching from karmic behaviors, habits, people, etc.) on an independent and personal level. You’re preparing yourself for a transformation or a shift in your reality. A lot of this could have to do with love and relationships and the decision to move into the energy of love or the energy of recieving love and preparing yourself to be in a long term commitment. Financially, mentally, and emotionally.
The world card upright signifying completion of cycles, integration, and accomplishments. You may also find yourself traveling or planning to travel very soon.
Oracle:
21 • Dreamwork • “The Buck Moon” • Waning Moon • Crone : “ the waning buck moon is a wonderful time to undertake dream work for this card. Here is the crone with a swirling universe in the front of her like luminescent Stardust. butterflies float around her in a dreamy landscape. The crone gazes at you as if she can see your inner self by doing so she tries to get your soul to manifest the imagining in your mind, this card encourages you to look back at your recent dreams and consider what you may have conjured in your sleep. Dream work is the process by which the unconscious mind alters the manifest content of thoughts to decode their real meaning for the dreamer, your higher self, or your dream self has been waiting for you to start paying attention. What were you dreaming about? What could be the meaning behind such images and emotions? were you afraid in your dream angry, or forlorn? try to think back to your vision and reflect on what your inner self is telling you.”
20 • Prepare • “The Buck Moon” • Full Moon • Mother: “ the full buck moon is the time to prepare. It is time to make something ready for use in your current situation. The mother is illustrated on this card, perched upon a pillar, as she has been given a place to concentrate on the strategy that she is preparing for her current undertaking, this is a strong signal that it is time for you to develop a plan. is there a business idea you would like to launch or maybe you are looking to remodel your home? sit down and write out the necessary steps you need to get this project in motion maybe it is time for you to start packing for a trip or organizing your home for a new baby. consider where in your life you may need to make some preparations and plans.”
37 • Reach Out • “The Cold Moon” • Waxing Moon • Maiden: “ the waxing cold moon, represents a time to reach out to another as the maiden is illustrated here strong in both carrying an owl upon her shoulder she stretches a hand out to help those in need now is the time to make an effort to do something for other people. This indicates that it is essential to lend a compassionate hand to those in need. Maybe there’s a classmate who may need help on a paper where you excel reach out and offer your support. Perhaps there’s a person who is struggling with addiction who needs encouragement? Where in your life can you do something good for another?”
35 • Take Root • “The Snow Moon” • Full Moon • Mother: “ a full snow, moon is a time to become established in your life to take hold of a new idea, or a way you wish to live. The mother is illustrated on this card firmly rooted to the earth. Timing is ideal to take an idea or belief and make it become established or accepted. If you believe that, you would be happier, living a vegan lifestyle. This could be the time to embrace and commit to it maybe you moved to a new city, and you have been feeling alone, consider volunteering or spending more time in your community. where in your life do you need to be accepted to have a permanent solid base to turn to? time to take root and do what is necessary to be a part of that World.”
***
iii.
Pile three, your next quantum leap has everything to do with you coming to terms with and finally feeling some deeply rooted emotions regarding where you stand in life, what you’re doing, what you’re accepting and some of the decisions you’ve made. This will ultimately lead you to walking away from something or making better choices but first comes the storm before all things can be watered after months without proper rain, before the dirt that hides the truth is washed away, and before we can step into peace and alignment with what is necessary for us to be fulfilled and happy. There’s a catalyst under way or you are in a position where you are experiencing one. You could’ve caused someone or others a great deal of trauma or pain, and in the process caused yourself a great deal of trauma and pain. This is your karma for some of the decisions you’ve made. But, with karma comes resolutions for everyone. You’ll get to see what happens when you make choices that aren’t in alignment with you and when you make choices at the expense of others.
You may be dealing with issues regarding co-dependency, may have karmic issues and cycles to heal regarding your parents, your childhood, addiction, certain people you choose to love and be around, etc. you’ll be dealing with a heart chakra opening and an awakening regarding how you feel and how you’ve made others feel. I hear ambulances out side of my window. There might be a great tower moment in store for you this season. A rude awakening or a long time moment of depersonalization that has caused you to step outside of yourself and reality in order to look at everything from a distance or different perspective.
You may also have a spiritual awakening for some of you. Whilst as a whole, your status quo, belief systems, and regular way of behaving and thinking will be challenged and broken down. Your old way of doing something or doing things may not be working out for you or in your favor any longer. You may struggle with accountability, struggle with confronting your feelings and accepting feelings of loss. There may be elements of your past that threaten to come up and break your heart as you’ve been done nothing to aid in or heal your past heart break. I’m getting a message about a phantom itch or phantom pain, something or someone who’s no longer there anymore is resurfacing for you on an internal level and bringing you pain and revelation. You’ll have to be strong, you’ll have to be willing to fight through this in order to get to a better place and find true peace.
You may find that things you want may not all be available to you any longer due to your choices and your decisions, but don’t be discouraged, there will be more for you to receive when the time comes to be rewarded for hardship. But you must do the inner work. Your past and your negligence is confronting you and you’ll have to face the consequences of your actions. Once in for all. You feared your shadow, you feared what the consequences would be for all that you ran from, all that you didn’t take accountability for, and all the damage you may have done with the intention to protect yourself or shield yourself for more wounding but it’s here for you. All you can do is learn from it. This energy is heavy and there’s a lot of heart break and defensiveness coming through here. Youll make it through, I’m sure of it. But it won’t be easy. Surrender. If you run anymore, you’ll be sorry.
Oracle:
33 • Prophecy • “The Blue Moon” • Waning Moon • Crone: “ the waning, blue moon is a time for prediction and foresight as the crone is shown upon this card there is a skull referring to the past, and how she can use that for insight going forward. future selves are pictured as ghostly figures around the wise woman, and the raven represents divination and awareness. Now is the time to use past experiences to predict the outcome of a current state of affairs. It is also time to seek knowledge of the future, or the unknown by supernatural means. reflect on what has happened in the past, and how that can likely happen again. how did you react previously to a specific situation? Do you want to act that way again or is it time to change paths, maybe a loved one treated you poorly before and may do so again with current circumstances think about possible outcomes to the events that are about to unfold.”
14 • Propagating Energy • “The Hare Moon” • Full Moon • Mother: “ the full hair moon is a time to cultivate, or tap into the tulleric current, which is the energy that derives from the heart of the Earth. Here the mother of the hare moon is pictured holding the earth in her hands as the current of energy swirls from the center. She is cradling this earth energy in her palms, ready to use it within herself to make her strong and intuitive. This card represents the need to gather your personal energy. you need to take inventory of all your unused or more importantly your misused power and store it for an essential purpose. Have you ever been in the situation that drained you of your vitality? Is there a specific person you deal with who depletes you? Reflect on what parts of your life are diminishing your energy, and how to pull that energy back to you and redirect it towards a better purpose.”
31 • Honoring The Past • “The Blue Moon” • Waxing Moon • Maiden: “The Waxing Blue Moon represents a time to honor your past. Here the Maiden is pictured cradling a skull in her hands, honoring the dead or those who have gone before. The raven represents prophecy and insight into that past, where she can grasp the full meaning of how those experiences impacted her life. It is time to recognize what has passed in your life. Understand that without those bygone days, you would not be the person you are today. It may be that you honor the past you, the unenlightened you, the you who did not know back then. Maybe it is time to praise the integrity of someone in your past, like a parent or friend. This person's advice may have led you to the right path. Think about the lessons learned, and let those ethics and morals guide you in the future.”
4 • Purification • “The Ice Moon” • Waxing Moon • Maiden: “The Waxing Blue Moon represents a time to honor your past. Here the Maiden is pictured cradling a skull in her hands, honoring the dead or those who have gone before. The raven represents prophecy and insight into that past, where she can grasp the full meaning of how those experiences impacted her life. The Waxing Crow Moon is about exploring through your inner self to find what you may be missing within. As this Maiden is depicted walking through the forest, guided by her lamp glow and her crow companion, she is looking deep into the darkness. She is trying to find her true path and the courage within herself to move forward.”

Haitian Vodou and sexual orientation - Wikipedia
During Haitian Vodou ceremonies, the houngans (priests), mambos (priestesses), and hounsis (initiates) dance around a potomitan until one of them becomes possessed by one of the lwa. A person can be possessed by any lwa, regardless of whether they are the same gender or not .[9] During possession, the possessed dancer will begin to behave like the lwa they are possessed by, regardless of gender.
Reverend Severina KM Singh, a New Orleans Voodoo priestess explains,[10]
I have gay friends who practice and I can personally attest to the closeness of the loa to them. I have witnessed wonderful and powerful rituals which they led. The intent in your heart matters more than your sexual orientation. I read for very many gay people and make offerings for them without any qualms at all. Voodooist believe in the transmigration of the soul. That means my soul could have been in a black male body at one time and an oriental female body at another time, not to mention the millions of lives spent in lower life forms. Some of them probably quite asexual or bisexual or transsexual
A large number of spirits or deities (lwa) exist in Haitian and Louisiana Voodoo. These lwa may be regarded as families of individuals or as a singular entity with distinct aspects, with links to particular areas of life.
Some lwa have particular links with magic, ancestor worship or death such as the Gede and Barons. A number of these are further particularly associated with transgenderism or same-sex interactions.[12] These include Ghede Nibo, a spirit caring for those who die young. He is sometimes depicted as an effeminate drag queen and inspires those he inhabits to lascivious sexuality of all kinds, especially transgender or lesbian behaviour in women.[13]
Gede Nibo's parents are Baron Samedi and Maman Brigitte; Baron Samedi is the leader of the Gede and Barons and is depicted as bisexual dandy or occasionally transgender, wearing a top-hat and frock coat along with a woman's skirt and shoes. Samedi has a tendency toward "lascivious movements" that cross gender boundaries and also imply a lust for anal sex.[14]
Other barons displaying gay behaviour are Baron Lundy and Baron Limba, who are lovers and teach a type of homoerotic nude wrestling at their school, believed to increase magical potency.[15] Baron Oua Oua, who often manifests with a childlike aspect, has been called the baron "most closely linked to homosexuality" by Vodou practitioners.[16]
Another lwa, Erzulie, is associated with love, sensuality and beauty. Erzulie can manifest aspects that are LGBT-related, including transgender or amazonian traits, in addition to traditionally feminine guises. When inhabiting men, these aspects can result in transgender or homoerotic behaviour, whereas they may result in lesbianism or anti-male sentiment in women. Erzulie Freda is seen as the protector of gay men, and Erzulie Dantor is associated with lesbians.[17]

Part 2:
Tumblr media
Moving forward, European art begins to focus on public works, once more calling back to historical ideals of Greek architecture and orders while still maintaining a distinct, subtle relationship with spirituality. For example, with the Neo-Baroque style of The Opéra constructed by Charles Garnier, 1861-1874, this can be seen with the Corinthian pillars, and the statues that sit on the rooftop of the building, visible clerestory windows that would have traditionally been the only source of light, instead of just purely decorative like the ones seen on this building. The tiered building resembles both an ancient Greek temple, but also churches that would often use spolia from Pagan architecture, resembling churches from the Gothic and Romanticism periods. Detailed relief sculpture is placed atop of the building, resembling metope relief sculpture often seen in ancient Greek temples. This building was constructed with the concept of historicism in mind, the highly detailed ornate adornments overtly echoing spiritual places of worship in the past, while calling upon ideals in European architecture.
Tumblr media
Overtime, however, traditional art ideals borrowed from the Greeks began to be challenged. For example, Olympia by Édouard Manet, oil on canvas, 4′ 3″ × 6′ 2" in height, 1863, was painted to directly confront the rigid traditional ways in which certain standards were upheld in order for a work to be considered objectively good by the majority, and more importantly, the high society of the European art world. Within his work, Manet references a Renaissance painting titled Venus of Urbino by Titian by employing a similar pose for the reclining nude figure. However, Manet thwarts those ever-present Greek art characteristics present within the original Renaissance work by composing the figure to accentuate her angles, painting her in muddy tones, and not adhering to the idyllic, sometimes inhuman body proportions given to figures in art up until this point. Within Manet's work, the subject glances toward and past the foreground of the work at the viewer, communicating her power. She appears to be rigid and stiff, noted by her clenched hand-- attributes that would have formerly never have been found in traditional Eurocentric art of women.
Tumblr media
During the Harlem Renaissance, western art began to take a step back from traditional art criteria. During this era the surrealist movement had taken root as the fauvism, expressionism, and cubism movements settled. The work La Citadelle Freedom by Augusta Savage, bronze, 1930, 14.5 x 7 x 6" in size, captures a figure thrusting her palm into the sky, standing on one foot seemingly as if she is about to take flight. She steps forward, leaning, showing natural momentum and movement within the figure. The work is inspired by the Haitian revolution, in which enslaved people revolted against the French colonists. The work itself is titled after a castle the first African leader of Haiti after the rebellion had lived in. The message becomes clear, as the art world shifts from its constraints of European Greek standards, symbolizing a hope for change, a hopeful, yet desperate grasp at a semblance of equality.
Tumblr media
Further into the modern art movement, restrictions in art, originally set by Europe, particularly the ancient Greeks, began to loosen further. In Hurling Colors by Shozo Shimamoto, 1956, at the 2nd Gutai Art Exhibition, the main focal point of the work becomes the action of creating it, physically hurling paint bottles at a canvas, destroying them in order to create something, heavily influenced by ideology in Japanese culture. The result would be abstract expressionist-like works filled with natural movement, partly due to the method it was created with. This is a primary example of an early form of performance art, although the concept had already taken root during the Futurist and Dada movements. Gutai, the movement that took place in Japan of which this was part of, distances from traditional European art standards, and directly encourages the exploration of creativity through any method, ultimately being a driving force against artistic oppression. Significantly, the movement took place in Japan, geographically isolated from western culture and overall direct influence aside from media.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Geography plays a major role in the development of diverse art, especially if the area is geographically isolated, or has been uninfluenced by traditional Eurocentric standards of not only art, but of living. As previously mentioned, spirituality takes on a completely different form in the context of other cultures, separate from the overwhelming reign of Christianity and Christian art. For example, the Teotihuacan people and culture produced works revolving around deities that were unique to their given environment, such as Quetzalcoatl, the feathered Serpent god of death and rebirth, which makes often appearances in monumental structures as decoration. More so, the appearance of Chalchiuhtlicue, a goddess presiding over bodies of water can be found represented next to the Pyramid of the moon, perhaps a subtle reference to the fact that the moon influences the tides. The art that is produced is directly related to the geography informing what gods are created and therefore what sculpture is made, as well as the fact that the culture is free, at this point, from the ideals in European culture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instances in which geographical regions impact the art being produced would be the Bwa people of Burkina Faso-- who upheld culture in the face of French colonialism and imperialism. The Bwa people use elaborately decorated wooden masks in dance performances, made within groups of families in competition with one another, that take place at a myriad of events in the culture. These artistic artifacts are crafted as an unmediated relation to the physical and human geography of the region. Another example would be carved figures typically seen atop staffs, used at funerary ceremonies for elders within the community, produced by the Bwa that function for the same purpose of the masks-- to honor spirits. To reiterate, the environment of culture, geographically distanced and unmuddied from typically imposed standards for art and the ultimate absence of forced Greek art ideals is what lead to the production of these objects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Gutai movement took place in Japan, geographically isolated from any other country, without influence from. This movement, which was unique to japan, and primarily took root because of the strong opposition against the stagnant european art rules, first put in place by the Greeks and upheld ever since in subtle or distinct ways. The Gutai movement was characterized by this message of freedom of creativity, to think outside of the box and the realm of traditional art techniques and styles. Hurling Colors by Shozo Shimamoto, 1956, at the 2nd Gutai Art Exhibition places importance on the action of creating the work, going further than their Western influences such as Pollock by committing to an almost violent way of applying the paints. Another artist, Atsuko Tanaka created the work Gate of Hell, 1965-1969, vinyl paint on canvas, which borrowing from the Western worlds avant-garde and abstract styles, but with the added influence of Gutai to form something unprecedented and new.
In summation, the art world was plagued by the rigid standards of European and ancient Greek art, but in geographically isolated regions that attempted to maintained culture in the face of intrusion or propaganda, sculpture and art were made in uniquely stylized ways. As the modern art world came into being and contemporary art began to be produced, an embrace of creativity and freedom in expression surfaced, slowly becoming valued in the high art world. Up until a determined point in Eurocentric art history was spent making art that fit the criteria of the European formula that prioritized Christianity and Greek art as a paragon, but the aspects of geography and spirituality aided in diversifying the art scene, obviously with the growing social movements as well, which gave way to the era of contemporary and post-modern art, prioritizing expression.

Archival Activation February
For my activation this month I decided to focus on early modern era sculptors. I encountered all of these artists in my History of modern art course and I decided to do a deep dive on their works. I chose sculptures because they aren’t as popular as painting and you don’t learn about them as often. I chose these Artists because they all wanted to challenge societal norms in art at the time and fight against the system of academic art.
Edmonia Lewis
Edmonia Lewis was Part African American, part Native American, and part Haitian. She was one of the first African American women sculptors to achieve international fame. She wanted to express equality by sculpting people of color in a classical style using classical materials like marble. She posed and sculpted her subjects in an ideal and noble way to imitate academic art and to show importance as well as dignity. She created the sculpture Forever free based on the Emancipation Proclamation and to commemorate the 13th amendment.

Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas liked to depict the working class with his sculptures, He was very focused on depicting his subjects realistically rather than ideally, which was very popular in the time. He was very interested in sculpting ballerinas which was very controversial because ballerinas were looked down upon and even called “little rats.” In his sculpture Little Dancer of Fourteen Years, he gave her real clothing and made her out of Beeswax. Critiques said that this piece reminded them of wax sculptures in roadside shows, therefore it was not art but entertainment.

Camille Claudel
Camille Claudel was a female sculptor who faced a lot of resistance in her career. Since she was a woman, she was not able to study at the French Academy. She decided to work as a group with three other woman as well as with the famous sculptor Auguste Rodin. She liked to treat classical subjects with un-classical treatment. In her sculpture Torso of Clotho she shows one of the Fates from Greco Roman mythology as a nude old woman, this clashes with the ideals of beauty pushed by the academies. She was also extremely expressive with the material she used, blending her figures in the the fluid shape of the bronze. When she tried to get the sculpture The Waltz casted in bronze she was denied, this was speculated to be purely based on sexism, however many people believe that it was because her subject matter was so radical, especially showing two nude figures intertwined in that way.

The common thread is Witch’s Cradle, a silent, unfinished film of around 12 minutes’ duration dating from 1943, co-directed by Deren. When exactly in 1943 it was made is uncertain, but it would appear that it pre-dates even Meshes of the Afternoon, the film she made with Alexander Hammid in the same year which established Deren, previously known only as a dancer, as a vital force of non-linear filmmaking. That alone would prevent the footage from being a mere cutting-room curio, but it is her collaborator who also ensures this fragment’s status as an important document of filmic Modernism. French artist Marcel Duchamp’s long association with America began in 1913 when he exhibited his Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 in the Armory Show in New York. After living in the city during World War I, he returned for its sequel and remained there for much of the rest of his life. How exactly he came into contact with Deren is unclear, but they both moved in a circle of war-time émigrés which also included André Breton and Anaïs Nin. Of course their collaboration was not Duchamp’s first encounter with film. He appeared, playing chess, in René Clair’s 1924 Surrealist film Entr’acte, and two years later produced the hypnotic, swirling patterns of Anemic Cinema with Man Ray. What survives of his work with Maya Deren is little more than an extended screen test – experiments with lighting effects and rudimentary illusions, such as that of a white string moving of its own volition. The wobbles, scratches and jumps of the unedited footage have a compelling period allure. The location for most of the film’s scenes is pivotal, and here we come to the third in our troika. In 1942, Peggy Guggenheim opened her gallery Art of This Century in New York in what was once a tailor’s workshop (and which has since returned to its fashion roots as this fascinating radio piece explains). She proposed not only to exhibit the most forward-thinking artists of her time, many of them represented in her own unparalleled collection, but also determined that the interior would be just as cutting-edge. To this end she engaged designer and architect Frederick Kiesler, who installed curving walls, extended arms to hold canvases and, in one space, white ropes suspended from floor to ceiling. The importance of Art of This Century as a catalyst for Modernism in the US cannot be overestimated, particularly its role in popularising Surrealism and in launching the careers of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell and other Abstract Expressionists. In early 1943, Guggenheim presented an exhibition of 31 women, the first show devoted exclusively to female Modernist artists, including Frida Kahlo, Hedda Sterne and – of all people – stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, who herself had an important collection of contemporary art. It also featured Dorothea Tanning (amazingly, still with us at 101), which caused Guggenheim to ruefully reflect that she “should have had only 30 women in the show” after her husband Max Ernst left her for the younger artist. At the end of that same year came the first Jackson Pollock show and between those events, presumably, came Deren and Duchamp’s shoot. Witch’s Cradle shows Kiesler’s innovative rope hanging system extended ad absurdum to become an impenetrable web. It echoes a Duchamp installation of the previous year shown at First Papers of Surrealism, the first major Surrealist exhibition of in the US, entitled Sixteen Miles of String featuring the eponymous length of twine (or did it? The knot of contradictory reports inspired New York art writer Andrew Russeth’s project 16 Miles of String, which seeks to document exhibitions, performances and other ephemeral artistic activity in the city.) Duchamp himself is seen briefly in Witch’s Cradle; Deren doesn’t appear in front of the camera (as she would in almost all of her later films). The female presence is Pajorita Matta, seen in some shots with a pentagram on her forehead, ringed with the words “the end is the beginning is the …” and so on (depending where you start and how many times you rotate), in mirror-writing. In his book Alchemist of the Avant-Garde, John F. Moffitt maintains that the occult heavily influenced Duchamp’s work; Witch’s Cradle would appear to be an important manifestation of that influence. Deren’s own interest in ritual and altered states of consciousness would later lead her to become an initiate of Haitian voodoo...

‘Poor, smart and desperate to be rich’: How Epstein went from teaching to Wall Street
BY LINDA ROBERTSON AND AARON BREZEL | Published JULY 16, 2019 06:28 PM | Miami Herald | Posted July 17, 2019 |
Before Jeffrey Epstein managed money for the world’s rich and powerful, he was educating their teenage children.
Epstein, the accused sex trafficker awaiting a bail ruling in a Manhattan jail, taught math and physics at the Dalton School, a private K-12 institution whose students are the sons and daughters of New York City’s elite. It was there on the aristocratic Upper East Side in the mid-1970s that a charming, bright young man with a head for numbers catapulted from his Coney Island roots to a double life of astounding wealth and disturbing depravity.
By the time he was 45, Epstein was living 18 blocks from Dalton in a nine-story mansion now worth $77 million, one of several posh homes where investigators say he molested dozens upon dozens of young girls, who were recruited to give him massages and coerced into sex acts. He followed a similar pattern at his waterfront estate in Palm Beach, where he pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting prostitution — despite being charged with far more serious crimes against underage girls — and received a remarkably lenient sentence, courtesy of a U.S. attorney who would later become President Donald Trump’s labor secretary.
Epstein launched his financier career during a parent-teacher conference at Dalton in 1976 when he dazzled a student’s father with his intelligence. Epstein confided that he wasn’t cut out to be a teacher. He envisioned himself on Wall Street.
“This parent was so wowed by the conversation he told my father, ‘You’ve got to hire this guy,’ ” recalled Lynne Koeppel, daughter of the late Alan “Ace” Greenberg, an executive at Bear Stearns investment bank. “Give Jeff credit. He was brilliant.”
Greenberg was also impressed by Epstein, then 23, a two-time college dropout and son of a parks department employee. Greenberg, son of an Oklahoma City women’s clothing store owner, rose from Bear Stearns clerk to CEO and had an affinity for employees he called “PSDs” — poor, smart and desperate to be rich.
“That was Jeff,” Koeppel said. “He was very smart and he knew how to woo people, how to schmooze. He’s personable and makes good company.”
Did Epstein purposely position himself at Dalton to get a foot on the ladder to jet-setting, celebrity-mingling, power-brokering high society?
“If that was his plan, it worked,” she said.
Epstein, now 66, started his job at the Dalton School at age 21 without a college degree and taught high school students only a few years younger than he was.
He was informal, friendly and liked to joke around, former students said. He was popular with female pupils, despite his puzzling personality.
“Epstein was considered a little creepy by the girls,” alumna Karin Williams said. “I won’t say that the girls didn’t like him. But they thought he was odd.”
Despite his short stint, Epstein left an impression.
“He’s the only man who I’ve ever met who had a full-length fur coat,” said Williams, who remembered the coat as Epstein’s flamboyant 1970s fashion statement at a school with a conservative dress code.
Student-teacher relationships were not unheard of at Dalton, former students said. It was a permissive time in the United States, and 40 years before #MeToo. However, no one who spoke to the Herald recalled Epstein engaging in a relationship or initiating unwanted physical contact with them.
“In retrospect, you could see how maybe he was looking for young nymphs,” said alumna Heidi Knecht-Seegers. “But I didn’t have a class with him and I was one of the few who didn’t drink or smoke or go to parties.”
Epstein — a math whiz as a kid — rose quickly at Bear Stearns, making partner by 1980 as reported in a 2002 New York Magazine profile. But while Epstein impressed traders and hedge fund managers, many of his students were less taken.
“To me he didn’t belong there,” said Maya Travaglia, who had Epstein for 10th grade math. “It just felt very unformed. He didn’t command the class.”
Joshua Persky, who graduated in 1977, had Epstein for physics.
“I thought he was okay,” Persky said. “Once in a while, he could not complete a complex homework problem, which I didn’t mind either.”
Peter Thomas Roth, who later founded an eponymous skin care company, described Epstein as an “amazing” physics teacher of his favorite class on Facebook. Epstein also tutored Roth in statistics to prepare him for the Wharton School at Penn.
Still, some kids complained to school administrators, Persky said.
“I think it was unusual that a school focused on quality education would hire a person with no experience and no college degrees, especially when the Dalton teachers we knew were excellent,” said E. Belvin Williams, a former Dalton trustee and associate dean of the Teachers College at Columbia University. “My hunch is he had contacts with parents or board members.”
By comparison, Travaglia noted, her geometry teacher was Yves Volel, an activist and Haitian presidential candidate who was assassinated in the late ’80s. Volel’s style was much more rigorous.
Ultimately, Epstein’s haphazard, uninspired teaching led to his dismissal after the 1975-76 school year, according to Peter Branch who was the head of the high school.
“It was determined that he had not adequately grown as a new teacher to the standard of the school,” Branch said.
The Dalton School is one of a group of New York private schools known for demanding academics. And like its peers, Dalton is expensive. Tuition in the mid-’70s was about $3,200 for upper school students. Today it’s over $50,000.
There’s a focus on the arts at Dalton. Notable alumni include Anderson Cooper, Claire Danes, Sean Lennon — the son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono — and a long list of actors, artists and musicians. Curriculum follows “the Dalton Plan,” which encourages each student to make his or her own educational choices.
The school offered a rich assortment of classes — 10 languages, including Russian; printmaking; jewelry-making; sculpture and drawing classes with nude models.
Persky performed modern dance with Jennifer Grey — “Baby” from “Dirty Dancing” — and Shauna Redford, daughter of Robert Redford.
Epstein arrived during a transition period for the Dalton School. The previous headmaster, Donald Barr, father of current Attorney General William Barr, quarreled with the board of trustees and resigned. Barr was a disciplinarian who clashed with the progressive parents.
“Donald Barr was a very authoritarian headmaster,” Karin Williams said.
Following Barr’s departure, T-shirts and sneakers were incorporated into the dress code. Blue jeans and “long male hair” were still prohibited, according to The Daltonian, the school’s newspaper. Travaglia remembers administrators measuring the length of girls’ skirts during the Barr years.
Barr left a semester before Epstein arrived and it’s unclear whether Barr had a hand in hiring him. Branch, who was interim headmaster, did not remember who hired him.
Apart from Epstein, Dalton has weathered a few of its own scandals in recent years. In 2013, a school email to boosters and donors included a confidential list of children who had been rejected. Gardner Dunnan, the headmaster who succeeded Barr, has been sued, accused of sexually assaulting a female student that he let stay in his apartment in 1986. The case has been transferred to the Southern District of New York, where Epstein is being prosecuted for alleged sex trafficking.
Epstein built a career making connections with the well connected. He got his start at Dalton and never moved far away. At Dalton, he was surrounded by the young girls he became fixated on as an alleged sexual predator, and schools became his preferred hunting ground.
His most recent accuser, Jennifer Araoz, said she was approached by one of Epstein’s recruiters when she was a 14-year-old freshman outside The Talent Unlimited High School on East 68th Street, a handful of blocks from his mansion. She was brought to him by a woman in her 20s who told her he was a caring man who could help her become an actress. He showed Araoz around his opulent townhouse with its super-sized decor of statues, taxidermy, leopard-print furniture and a Steinway grand piano, while white-gloved servants offered her wine and cheese, according to her court filings and an NBC interview. She was paid $300 for her visits until the day a massage in a special room with angels painted on the sky-blue ceiling turned into rape, Araoz said.
Her story mirrors those of other victims, who said he preyed on young teens who often had artistic aspirations He sought out insecure, vulnerable girls; prosecutors speculate there could be hundreds. Even Epstein’s friends remarked -- in flattering tones -- on how Epstein loved women and was frequently in the company of young women in New York, Palm Beach, at his Zorro Ranch in New Mexico or his private island in the Caribbean. His jet was nicknamed the “Lolita Express.”
At the Interlochen School for the Arts in Michigan, Epstein targeted 13-year-old Nadia Bjorlin, according to her mother, who told the Daily Mail that Epstein offered to be Nadia’s “godfather” and foster her singing career. Bjorlin’s mother, wary of Epstein and his aggressive assistant Ghislaine Maxwell, rejected his perverse proposal; Nadia went on to become a soap opera star.
Araoz and Bjorlin had both lost their fathers shortly before Epstein approached them.
Epstein, a talented pianist who attended Interlochen summer camp as a kid, donated $17,000 and a new cabin adjacent to the girls’ dorms to the school in the woods.
Epstein created a self portrait, framing himself as a wealthy party host, philanthropist and intellectual, donating money of uncertain origins from his foundations to arts organizations, scientists, Harvard University, the Santa Fe Institute think tank and cancer research funds.
He gave $180,000 to Ballet Florida in West Palm Beach, some of that earmarked for therapeutic massages.
The all-girls Hewitt School, located four blocks from his Manhattan mansion, received $15,000.
Epstein donated $75,000 to Dalton, springboard to the role he wanted to play.
The last time she saw her old teacher, a Dalton alumna recalled, Epstein was crossing Park Avenue at 71st Street with Woody Allen and his young wife, Soon-Yi Previn.
Miami Herald investigative reporter Nicholas Nehamas contributed to this report.

Faith & Fashion: Chinese-Canadian Adrienne was 23 when she converted to Islam. Her decision to convert was independent of family, friends or love. During this time, Adrienne stumbled into old high-school friend Siram at a Hallal Food Exhibition. Their friendship picked up right where they left off, only this time Siram learned of Adrienne’s new spiritual path. At the time, Adrienne received tough backlash from family members but it was Siram who stepped in to invite her to social gatherings with friends and family. “As the only Muslim in my family and not having very many Muslim friends, this meant the world to me. I think one of the most intriguing things about Islam for me is the universal brother and sisterhood we have,” says Adrienne. But the girls have more than faith in common- they both have a love for fashion. They constantly advise each other on clothes, make-up, and of course, how to nail those Instagram posts:). 📸@nataliadolan_
