Galatea Letter Thoughts and Analysis
(+ Crack Theory about Joseph being a previous owner of Oletus Manor and may have been the “original purchaser” of the Muse sculptures, with mentions to Truth & Inference and DM)
The Muse sculptures “were not made by a world-renowned sculptor of any kind, yet their method of crafting remains incredibly unique. During my studies in Florence, I imitated the technique to produce a number of animal sculptures. The originator of this technique, a genius favored by art yet scorned by fate, has long since returned to ash, the tragic victim of a vicious fire”.
Alice in Ashes of Memory 1 says “These sculptures are mechanisms designed by Mr. Lapadura, and all the doors in this manor can be opened with the nightingale’s song”. So Burke may have been the 1 to design the sculptures, though I’m not sure he was the “originator of this technique” (and Burke shouldn’t have died in any fire before Galatea writes this letter).
Tumblr media
This section reiterates she studied in Florence, learning this same “technique” to produce some animal sculptures, which may relate to the “bird imprisoned in stone” she gave to Mr. DeRoss than later destroyed. It sounds like Galatea went to Florence twice. Once before her 1st visit to Baron DeRoss, and once afterwards. She likely made the “bird imprisoned in stone” before her 2nd visit to Florence but learned more on this 2nd trip (maybe the same “technique” referenced in this section) which may be why she destroyed it the next time she went to Baron DeRoss’ manor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's likely this 2nd time she visits the manor is when she examines the Muse sculptures.
Before this, it says “According to Mr. DeRoss, these sculptures were included when his predecessor first purchased the Manor”. “Mr DeRoss” is Baron DeRoss aka Orpheus/Nightmare, while Manus de Capet should be the “predecessor” as Manus owned the manor before Orpheus.
Then it says “Whether or not the original purchaser knew about their unique sculpting technique is unclear, but Mr. DeRoss is convinced that they were well aware of it. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why he invited me to restore them?”.
The 1st part, which mentions the “original purchaser”, if Burke was the one to design the sculptures, the original purchasers may be the DeRoss couple, who we know were interested in art and especially interested in Greek mythology, and they owned the manor before Manus. That could also explain why Orpheus would be “convinced that they were well aware of it”.
Though it’s odd when it says Galatea was invited to “restore them”. If Burke was the 1 to design them, why couldn’t he restore them? That could imply either for some reason Burke is unable to do so (though this should be before Tracy’s game where we know Burke appears, so he should be around, though maybe he’s busy) or Burke wasn’t the one to actually create them?
Tumblr media
The talk about the creator of the technique burning in a fire already makes it sound at least like Burke didn’t make the technique because he hasn’t died in a fire yet. Which could imply that either someone else made the sculptures for the DeRoss couple, or the sculptures already existed when the DeRoss couple bought the manor. Burke was said to have been hired to work on Oletus Manor which was “desolate” and “rundown” when they bought it. Maybe the sculptures were already in the manor but Burke modified them to become “mechanisms” to do something? Maybe if Burke was only responsible for the “mechanisms” in the sculptures rather than the sculpture itself, that could explain why Orpheus needs a sculptor like Galatea to actually restore the sculptures rather than just asking Burke to do it.
Tumblr media
I’m unsure who the “originator” of the technique would be if not Burke, much less who would’ve designed the sculptures if not Burke (if he only modified them rather than made them).
There is my crack theory that Joseph was the “original purchaser” of the sculptures (purchased them rather than actually made the sculptures I mean). Something further in the past before the DeRoss couple could explain why Galatea says the originator of the technique “has long since returned to ash”.
Crack Theory: Joseph was a previous owner of Oletus Manor
Joseph may have been 1 of the previous owners of Oletus Manor (likely before the DeRoss couple), considering he has several parallels with the main story.
There's also how he:
did go to England (where Oletus Manor is) after escaping the French Revolution, with his 2nd letter confirming Joseph did own a manor,
Tumblr media
he was performing experiments that cause people to go missing (like Baron DeRoss with his games),
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The “darkroom” Joseph spent all his time in could’ve been the same basement area Orpheus/Nightmare developed and keeps his drugs (darkrooms being places photographers could develop and process their photographs without exposure to light, and a basement could be an ideal location for one due to the darkness and being away from any light. Not to mention the basement could offer the necessary amount of space and privacy for the darkroom equipment (as well as storage for other photographic supplies). And also Joseph likely had a lab, like area we find Orpheus’ drugs, based on the "damaged lab notes"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
both Joseph and the DeRoss couple were interested in art to some degree (the DeRoss couple came to the manor because the environment was "conducive to artistic creation", which could be something Joseph would also want),
he goes missing after a mob invades his home paralleling the DeRoss couple dying due to a mob and Orpheus and Alice being taken from the manor afterwards,
both manors are described in a negative light. The DeRoss couple's manor is said to be "notorious"/"infamous" even before they buy Oletus Manor, while Joseph's is described as "cursed" by the "missing old man" after the mob's attack (and because of all the people that went missing),
Tumblr media
both Joseph and Orpheus were close to their "siblings" (Claude as Joseph's biological brother vs Alice as Orpheus' adopted sister) but lost them (Claude died due to illness vs Alice was taken) and both want to get them back
Tumblr media
Crack Theory: Joseph being the “original purchaser” of the Muse sculptures
In Truth & Inference, DM is trying to collect all the Muse paintings. Truth and Inference learn about them during Beneath the Truth due to an “estranged friend” that knows a lot about art, including the Muse paintings. A friend who makes Truth and Inference “tense” at the mention of, someone DM knows as well, and someone that Inference sends Truth to talk to. She later reports what she learned: There are 9 paintings of The Muses. No one knows where they came from, but The Muses within the painting were known as goddesses able to grant inspirations to create. Truth gives Inference 9 photos that are “mostly replicas” of the paintings but can be used as references. There’s another rumor: “One painting is nothing of value, but when you gather all 9, it was said you could get an extraordinary treasure that no one could put a price tag on”.
This “estranged friend” may be Succubus, who is from a family of art dealers, who we know from Lone Moon Girls School that Galatea knows a lot about art and art history, is someone Truth, Inference, and DM would be knowledge about (due to Stormy Night Surprise), someone that would explain Truth and Inference “tensing” at, as well as why Truth specifically is sent to talk to Succubus, due to Succubus’ interest in Truth (as well as how she refused to talk more to Inference after she was captured following Stormy Night Surprise).
DM we know has at least 1 Muse painting, which he made a copy of during Beneath the Truth, a copy he used to bait thieves into taking it while ensuring the safety of the real painting. The name of this painting, which is confirmed to be a Muse painting, is “the Goddess”.
Another Muse painting is mentioned to have been owned by Jonathan’s family, which they were forced to sell to settle their debts. The police couldn’t identify the buyer, but they know that all the auction’s guests were “high profile elites” and the painting was sold for a “staggering” amount. Therefore, DM likely purchased that painting too.
This painting is confirmed to be a Muse painting, with its name being “The Seven-Stringed Lyre”
We know from Inference during Crystal Palace that 2 paintings vanished during Stormy Night Surprise. These were likely the 2 paintings being offered by The Prince and Rainmaker: an “oriental beauty” and a “landscape painting of a forest bathed in blue light”, which were found with Monstrous Bird (implying Succubus had them taken). Though Crystal Palace makes this a bit confusing, as it may imply the paintings went missing again? I’m not sure.
Also during Crystal Palace, we learn of a painting Amethyst Duchess learned about at Lone Moon Girls’ School and purchased from Narcissus. A painting that is a “replica” of the portrait of “Her Majesty, Queen Victoria”, the original being made by a German painter, Franz Xaver Winterhalter. This same painting, which could be a Muse painting, vanishes at the end of Crystal Palace, likely taken by Duke (Black) Raven, potentially for DM.
These paintings could connect to the Muse sculptures Galatea comments on in her letter, which she made “interesting discoveries” about, “ones that were not mentioned to me before” (aka Orpheus didn’t tell her about these details).
She says there are “two genuine sculptures of the Muse Terpsichore in different poses” as well as “a near-perfect counterfeit of Calliope”.
The “near-perfect counterfeit of Calliope” could parallel the replica of “Her Majesty, Queen Victoria” Narcissus made, while the “two genuine sculptures of the Muse Terpsichore” could relate to the 2 paintings of “The Goddess” DM made?
Galatea says “For a set of sculptures to contain 2 of the same figure is a rare sight indeed. Generally, this is only the case when a piece is lost during the sculpting process, forcing the artist to complete the original set with a new replacement”. Maybe this could parallel the fake “The Goddess” painting being stolen.
About the counterfeit, she says she has an “imperfection… left by her creator” that “can only be noticed by those who are capable of perceiving the truth of art”. Rather than an imperfection, it may be “an incomplete section… like the words written on the counterfeit’s back (which have been rubbed away)”. Edgar (who is Narcissus) is always talking about no one else being worthy to talk to him about art, so maybe it could tie to the replica Narcissus made.
There’s also how they don’t know where the Muse paintings came from, like how we (even if Galatea does) don’t know the originator of the technique who made the sculptures (or who purchased them)
About the writing, Galatea says “perhaps it’s simply waiting for the artist to return and finish what was started. And if Mr. DeRoss isn’t waiting for that person to return, then he most likely intends to take their place”. This seems to imply Orpheus has to make a decision about replacing the artist to be the one to “finish what was started”, to ensure the “incomplete section” of the sculpture is finished. This is likely the “decision” Galatea is waiting for him to make. She believes he will do it, and that will be why she thinks she’ll “return to the Manor yet again”, with this incomplete sculpture of the muse Calliope being the “muse” she wants to ensure is “made whole”.
Going to the Muse Corridor, we can find 9 statues. Alice walks from right to left. The names (and symbols) of the statues as she walks by them are:
Polyhymnia (pensive face),
Tumblr media
Terpsichore (lyre, though usually shown sitting down playing the lyre),
Tumblr media
Melpomene (tragedy mask),
Tumblr media
Clio (scroll),
Tumblr media
Euterpe (flute),
Tumblr media
Thalia (comedy mask),
Tumblr media
Urania (celestial globe and compass),
Tumblr media
Calliope (tablet, stylus, or scroll),
Tumblr media
and Erato (smaller lyre)
Tumblr media
We can also find another sculpture of Calliope in the foyer (this time holding a stylus and writing tablet). This is the statue Alice walks behind to get to the Manor Owner’s study.
Tumblr media
The 2nd Terpsichore that Galatea references is in the Dining room. This time she’s sitting down, which she’s usually depicted as doing, which explains Galatea mentioning the 2 being in different poses.
This was the one that was missing 2 strings during Emma’s diary but William fixes in his diary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also during Emma’s diary, she references (while still by this statue) a “a drawer with no handle or keyhole” (likely the one underneath the statue, which we have yet to resolve in any diary I’ve seen).
Tumblr media
I don't believe we've ever seen any of the writing (or even where it was rubbed off) on the counterfeit Calliope, but the words being on the statues back fits with the Calliope that Alice walks behind to get to the Manor Owner's study, which may be the "counterfeit"?
Also very minor, but I find it a bit interesting as this was the statue we see Freddy looking at for quite a bit, both right before Emily arrives in his diary, as well as in Emma's when she goes to talk to him to stop him and Kreacher arguing. He also knew it to be Calliope.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One more random thought (while I double check I'm not missing anything), but Galatea was said to have been carving out the same face over and over.
Is it possible maybe it's Calliope's face?
Though her backstory says she names it her own name, but if Galatea is obsessed about that "incomplete section" and wants to ensure it'll be "made whole", that could somewhat explain her obsession in her backstory? Not sure, like I said it's just a random thought.

Just a fun question! What are your favorite at mediums that you don’t draw/use?
Okay I love this question-
Two mediums that elude me beyond belief are
Paint (any paint, acrylic, oil, it’s like a whole wild world and I can’t make it do WHAT I WANT-)
And colored pencils (don’t judge me okay I’m a alchohol marker kinda girly. I can’t get the layering right with pencils.)
Paint is such an amazing medium because not only does it enable you to create LARGER pieces of artwork on nearly ANY surface you want! But it’s so fluid and malleable to work with there’s very little you CANT do with it! I have a huge respect for any painted artwork that takes time, specifically realism but I still appreciate other works as long as you can tell it has meaning/took time.
Colored pencils are nice to work with for little things for me but like- I don’t understand how people layer them??? This is also a pretty common medium for hyperrealism. These differ from charcoals and graphite pencils because it’s not just a matter of lighter or darker anymore- it’s a matter of completely different colors.
Yeah you think your just gonna use orange pencils?
NAH THAT SKINTONE HAS UNDERTONES OF GREEN!!! YOUVE BEEN FOOLED!!
Anyway- I have a huge respect for people who use these mediums because I have genuinely tried and they elude me.
But the important thing to remember is that every medium takes talent and practice and therefore all should be admired :) !
Thanks for the ask Lily uwu 💜
