SCOM Angsty Thoughts:
Tumblr media
Spoilers for those not caught up… and a little food for your thought.
There’s something about Hunter realizing that other Coven Heads might have known what he was way before he did.
And that they might have been looking at him like a magical butcher chart of what they could claim to increase their power — and that the one who was supposed to be protecting him used this as a way to manipulate their loyalty.
Makes this scene a lot more terrifying…
Tumblr media
What were the others promised?
Maybe we’ve already seen a version of this in another canonical example … (hint. It’s not a galdorstone… that’s obvious)
And who has the most to gain by old rumors about Grimwalker biology being broadcast by a major political candidate.

my first toh post despite bingewatching the entire show in 4 days starting the day after the s2 finale came out and then becoming obsessed with it oops.
something really neat that i noticed about hunter that i don’t think people are talking about is his eyes and what they represent. i mean. obviously people are talking about his eyes and have been since the shot of the grimwalker book with magenta eyes was revealed. but!! one thing i haven’t noticed is how relevant that magenta in particular is.
i see him depicted with anything from red to even purple eyes, and that’s cool!! draw and write and whatever else him however you want because ultimately he’s a fictional dude and it doesn’t matter what he looks like! but it looks like to me, canonically, his eyes are (a slightly desaturated) magenta.
Tumblr media
(this was made in about 3 minutes with various screengrabs of him in neutral-ish lighting that i just nabbed off of google, so don’t mind the quality. the color block in the corner is from the wikipedia article about magenta.)
which is really interesting. because magenta is a color that doesn’t exist. the guy who wouldn’t exist naturally has a primary feature that’s defined by the fact it does not exist.
(to explain, for those who don’t know: magenta is a color that doesn’t have a wavelength of light - it’s an extra-spectral color so while it does, technically, appear to us, it’s not attached to a wavelength of light and therefore “doesn’t exist”/we can’t see it in the traditional color sense or the same way we see other colors. or that’s how it is as far as i understand? overall it’s v neat!)
and!! i don’t know!!! i have feelings about that. that hunter has this obvious, glaring trait that he will always have that defines such a massive part of his identity - not only is he something artificial, a copy of someone belos made disappear, but he has a permanent reminder that he is something that shouldn’t exist right down to his eye color, a color that shouldn’t exist.
a color that our brains just made up because it didn’t like the idea of there not being a color between red and purple.
and that color is attached to a boy made up because belos didn’t like the idea of being alone.
so yeah i have some feelings about that.

The head of the healing coven has never been around Hunter for more than a few minutes at a time, mostly because Belos forbids that the two of them interact for some strange reason, but the few times they’ve gotten close to Hunter always reveals something concerning about the golden guard.
And I’m not just talking about the healing coven head noticing Hunter’s scars. I’m talking about the head of the healing coven noticing the weird quirks of Hunter’s grimwalker biology.
The first thing they notice is his fireproof skin. It’s not that weird at first glance, many demons have a slight resistance to fire, but the concerning part is just how strong that fireproof skin is. The demons that have some fireproofing built into their bodies aren’t completely immune to fire and they can still be burned with enough of it. Hunter is not only completely fireproof, but can walk through the boiling rain and swim through the boiling sea. This just shouldn’t be possible for a witch like him.
The second thing they noticed was his body temperature. It happened during a mission with Eberwolf and Hunter. They were trying to hunt down a beast that was terrorizing a local area. Eberwolf was there to track down the thing, Hunter was there to fight the thing (he had just been promoted to Golden Guard a few days ago and Belos said it would be good training for the future), and they were there to act as a healer to Eberwolf, Hunter and any civilians that were injured by the thing. Long story short Eberwolf cast a spell that let all of them see in infrared so they could track down the creature using its body heat and the healing coven head noticed that Hunter’s body was at a much higher temperature than what is normal for a witch. Constantly at temperatures that a regular witch would consider feverish. They actually mentioned this to Hunter and he just went “Oh yeah that’s perfectly normal for me. Uncle says it’s something I inherited from my family.” They spent the entire next day searching for something that could cause those unnaturally high body temperatures and be passed down genetically but they never found anything.
The third thing they noticed was his heartbeat. A slow heartbeat is normal for some witches and demons, the boiling isles are very, very diverse when it comes to biology, but the complete lack of a heartbeat definitely isn’t normal. They originally tried to justify this with the logic that Hunter’s armour must make his heartbeat harder to hear but no. Hunter just straight up has no heartbeat.
The fourth thing they noticed was on a trip to the knee. All the coven heads were travelling there for a meeting regarding the day of unity and the golden guard was there acting as a bodyguard. As they all trekked through the cold of the knee, the head of the healing coven noticed that they could see Hunter’s breath coming from the eye holes in his mask, and by playing attention to that, they noticed how slowly Hunter seems to breathe. So slowly that it’s hard to tell if he’s breathing at all at times.
But one of the strangest things they’ve seen was the golden guard running into the castle after a mission, covered in visible injuries. Hunter went straight past them and headed straight towards the throne room to speak to Belos. The healing coven head only caught a small glimpse of Hunter as he ran past, but they swear to this day that Hunter’s blood was as green as the insides of a palisman, with some actually red blood mixed in. No witch or demon on the boiling isles has blood like that.

GRIMWALKER BIOLOGY & ANATOMY STUDIES [pt 1 / ?? ]
(aka, my ideas and thoughts on how these bad but sad boys work!)
with pictures :D !
ok for starters! I tried my best to make real life connections with actual biological stuff and yeah but there are some things ima have to bullshit lol
i hope yall like rambling
Tumblr media
[ ^ Basic ideas ]
Lets talk about anatomy!
From what i can tell from the grim walker ingredient book they have some pretty ... interesting ingredients...
GALDORSTONE:
Heart and Power apparently. What i can make of this is that the Galderstone not only powers and animates the non-organic materials but acts as a circulatory system, flowing blood and nutrients to keep the body stable by creating magical pulses of pressure that makes the blood flow. Blood is kind of ideal for homeostasis and living and om pretty sure we've seen hunter bleed at least once... Perhaps the Galderston can create an artificial vascular system to carry oxygen, magic, and nutrients throughout the growing body instead of just making veins from scratch. I want to say the Galderstone can generate energy for the grimwalker but that would mean they wouldn't need to eat, and I don't think that's true. I think its main purpose is just activate the magic materials and is like the generator to a car, keeping it running. If the Galderstone were to break or fail, the grimwalker probably come unglued and fall apart to its components (which would be pretty horrifying)
ORTET BONE:
Very key component! The ortet bone kind of helps form the blueprint for the species of the grimwalker, as well as supplying blood, a skeletal system, and components of DNA. The most basic definition of the word ORTET is as follows: the original plant from which the members of a clone have descended. Fun fact: since were using cloning terms, Hunter is to Caleb as Ramet is to Ortet (Ramet is an individual clone) I did research for cloning and as it turns out you kinda need a complete genome for cloning but for bullshitting reasons (which will be explained) we can clone with incomplete DNA and make synthetic dna from scratch! I hypothesis that the reason grims can look different from the ortet instead of just straight carbon copies is due to the bone that is used and how much of i there is. Like example a grimwalker made using just a toe phalange is going to look A LOT less like the ortet compared to a grimwalker made from something like the cranium and bigger bones and such. Basically smaller bones dont carry as much dna info and leads for room to fill in the blanks. Sadly this means alot of Grimwalkers had A LOT of health problems (this can range anywhere from immune system problems to liver failure which is quiet typical in clones, that and it is often that clones appear different from the ortet due to enviromental factors and influences)
Tumblr media
[ As the image above shows, subject #103 has a very close resemblance to the ortet due to the bones that are used ] There are pros and cons to using bones! Pros being that they can hold DNA for much longer than tissue, but the thing is bones can degrade really easy if not preserved, and i don't think belos had a bottle of hydrogen peroxide laying around that he could dunk Caleb in, so let's just assume he made sure his brother's corpse was well cleaned and kept. Biggest con is the human body only has so many bones (about 206) I believe that the reason Grimwalker can generate organs is by using the ortet and making the stem cells created from bone marrow. Stem cells are very important because they can turn into different types of cells like blood and tissue cells as well as repair tissue. I believe the process of growing grimwalkers is kind of like "Self-renewal" the process in which stem cells divide and make more of the body
STONESLEEPER LUNGS:
Im just gonna assume stone sleeper had very small lungs because aint no way those t rex lungs fit in a teenage boy. I originally thought The reason that Grimwalkers can stay underground for so long is because the lungs, similar to how a stonesleeper hibernates for centuries (kind of like how wood frogs can basically cryo-hibernate) by petrifying but a grimwalker IS growing and therefore needs resources to grow, like how a baby does in the womb. So it has to be actively getting said resources so it cant be petrified. I now think the reason that grimwalkers have these lungs is because theyre easily compatible to the galderstone, which needs oxygen for the blood and that they can be easily harvested and stored in stone form. But that does give room for cool adaptations like self-petrification! (which i will get into next time :D )
PALISTROM WOOD:
Ok its says that the wood is used for keratin, which is a fiberous protein which can make all kinds of things like scales, hair, nails, feathers, horns, claws, hooves, and skin! And since its also a plant means it can grow 4 times as fast as normal keratin can! This explains why hunters hair grew so ridiculously fast in season 3, was because his hair can produce its own carbohydrates and nutrients on its own... This means his skin and surface wounds can heal quite fast! (down side is it might give him something similar to PSS (Peeling Skin Syndrome ) ...) I think Palisman is very important becasue of several reason! 1 Like palisman, it can "animate" if you will, more or less help pull off the illusion that he is alive. 2 Like mentioned before, Grimwalkers need nutrients to grow and I believe the palistrom wood aids in that! Using a process called cellular diffusion, the grimwalker can take in nutrients from the ground around them (which i theorize to be highly fertilized) through THEIR SKIN! and into the veins and flesh of the grims 3 I believe that in the process of forming, the galderstone "activates" the palistrom wood, forming into skin or hair but this process of rapid growth leaves the skin all undone and fragile because a proper cutaneous barrier was not formed yet (which is useful for being malleable. This is why Hunter's ears are so 1 .god blessed big because they are fake and molded to look like that. Its also why The grimwalker Belos possessed fell apart so easily, like he said "It wasnt ready")
Tumblr media
SELKIEDOMUS SCALES:
This one kind of confused me because... well why do we need the seal flesh when the ortet can just regenerate it?? I think its kind of like the stuffing if you will, it also speeds up the process of producing flesh by a lot! Especially if you want to make grown grimwalkers! Im thinking that Grimwalkers don't have a set "age" theyre just as big as however many materials they are given to work with. Even though the book says they can start as babies, if you look closely there is a check mark towards the more adolescent figure, so im thinking that they are not ready to be unearthed until they reach a certain growth ima guess around the age of over 10-ish?? We don't know how young Hunter was pulled out of the floor but it seems like he was fairly young, or atleast younger. This means while Hunter appears to be 16, he might have only been living for around 5 years or so.
Tumblr media
Now typically normal seals have a lot of blubber which is a thick layer of fat, also called adipose tissue, directly under the skin of a marine mammals. Its used for insulation. The thing is tho, it says Selkiedomus Scales, not flesh... Dont worry there are mammals that have scales like Pangolins but i dont know if these scales are like thick plated or small and stretchy. Magic bullshitting time, Im goin to assume Selkiedomus scales refers to a layer of scale-like flesh that protect the creature from boiling but is also highly malleable and easy to work with. Maybe the reason they can withstand such heat is due to unsaturated bonds of butadiene molecules mixed into the blubber that are highly heat resistant Selkie domus flesh is molded and into the relative shape of desired body and using the DNA of the ortet the flesh is reshaped and reused into the desired muscles shapes. The vascular system created by the galderstone spreads throughout the flesh and binds with it. healing together and becoming flesh, kind of like a speed up version of skin graft maturation! This is useful for growing them quickly because they don't have to grow an entire adult body from scratch so this speed up the process by eeeerrm 20 years or so lol
Thats only the basics for now, sooner or later i shall get into the more fun stuff, like adaptaions of Grim walker, the growing process, ad more!
Hope you guys enjoyed my ideas, if i got anything incorrect let me know, my research isnt exremly searched through.
last question ill leave you all with, it kind of stumped me while i was working...
Tumblr media
i have a theory but i wanna know your thoughts...
(i worked hard on all this btw, i really hope people read it lol /lh.)

Being a grimwalker is already something that causes massive identity issues, amongst other things. But beside that, how terrifying is it to know nothing about your biology. For Hunter and for the adults who'll be taking care of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No proper information that could tell them how illnesses would affect him, how long would he live, can witches be his blood donors, is late puberty diff for him, what could they expect as he gets older. There's just nothing. A common mold could be deadly for all they know.
And they can't go and subject him to medical test after test cause that kid surely has medical trauma from the Coven. It's the kind of situation with no right answers and it's quite mortifying, esp for Darius who thinks he already let him down once; he died by Belos' hand.
And to be unable to help him when it matters and having to face the future without knowing what his son's average life span is, is a parent's worst nightmare. Same goes for Eda with King, and Vee and Camila partially, tho there's actual adult basilisks around at least
(While there's those grimwalker books that Hunter read in LR, they struck me as fictionalized and censored. I severely doubt Belos let any proper grim knowledge be recorded in books you can find at school so only hope is if any records were kept in the grim lab)

Before Hyacinth learns about being a Grimwalker does he think that they were adopted? Like how Mittens was but at a younger age? Or do they think they’re Hunter and Willow’s biological child? Or something else? And if they were told to be adopted did they wonder about their origins, whether in an analytical curious way or a “I wonder if my bio parents loved me” way? Sorry a lot of questions haha
I think they would do what any good parent would and give him the age appropriate truth- since he’s pretty observant he’d probably ask like… “why don’t I look like mama at all? Bronnie looks like both her mom and her renny, but I just kinda look like dad…” (Mittens wouldn’t have been in the picture yet if Hyacinth is pretty young here.)
n Willow and Hunter would be like. Nervous glance. Ok let’s do this. We prepared for this a little.
Cont. Under the cut to save space lol
“Well, you know how most witches and demons look a little like their parents, right? Like how Bronnie has green hair like Mx Raine, or how your mama looks a little like both grandpa and pop?”
“mhm!”
“Well, that’s because- um. Usually-“
“Most witchlings and demon kits are made by different… parts of their parents! Like how a seed can grow into a tree or a Biting Nettle after it’s pollinated, yeah?“
“Right! like- remember how when Aunt Luz had Azura in her tummy because she still had to grow?”
“Uh huh…”
“It’s sort of like that. But… you didn’t grow in my tummy. And your dad-“
“I uh- my body is… different.”
“Like mine?”
“Yes!! Exactly! That’s because you and I share a lot of things, bud. Like how I had eyes like yours in that picture, the one from before Flapjack helped me? A-And we have the same big ears and that one lock of hair that never stays straight no matter how we style it?” (He softly flicks Hyacinth’s hair noodle with a smile, and Hyacinth giggles, so unlike the past.)
“You and I are related by our biology, what makes our bodies up as… witches. You’re not related that way to your mom, but you are still, absolutely, without a doubt her child, and she is still your mama. The love is there and she’s known you since the day you were born, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I love your mom, and we both love you, which makes us family.”
“Exactly. You’re our baby- my baby, even if I didn’t help to bring you here. Okay?”
“Oh… okay! So it’s like how Uncle Gus is my uncle but you guys and him don’t have the same dads?”
“…”
“Y-yeah that’s a much simpler way to put it!”

Owl House/Boiling Isles biology headcanons from a fic idea I never wrote:
Witches have a wider range of color vision than humans. A lot of magic puts off infrared light (meaning Luz is missing out on like, half of what spells actually look like).
Humans, however, have a better sense of smell. Witches are better at digesting potentially hazardous materials, but humans have to worry about poisons. Humans are also highly specialized to smell petrichor (via Wikipedia, "able to detect it at concentrations as low as 0.4 parts per billion"), and witches can't smell it at all. (Luz is like, "I miss the rain smells in the human realm so much. On the Boiling Isles the rain just smells like burning :/" and all her friends are like, "what. are you talking about."
Witches don't have an appendix, but they do, coincidentally, also have a random organ that doesn't have much of a purpose and sometimes ruptures and kills you. It's located slightly above the right lung.
Kinda obvious but, ears. Witch ears have a greater curve than human ears and taper into a point. They have some limited mobility, allowing the witch to pinpoint sounds, and they play a part in emotional expression. For a witch, it's not really that strange that human ears are round, it's more that they don't move at all. They're completely stiff, and it makes humans difficult to read. (Luz is lucky she's otherwise very expressive, or else she would come off as nearly emotionless. As it is, sometimes people think she's not being genuine, because her ears don't match the rest of her expression, like when someone smiles without their eyes.)
Humans have slightly denser bones than witches. As a result, humans weigh a bit more on average and put on muscle easier.
Witches can't digest lactose
A high tolerance for most human poisons means that alcohol isn't a popular drug for witches. It technically affects them in a similar way, but their tolerance is such that it's not an effective way to get high. Most of the drugs used recreationally on the Boiling Isles would kill a human instantly.
Witches have a different pulse beat from humans, since their hearts are designed differently to accommodate the bile sac (and grimwalkers' pulses are even more unique, since they have a galdorstone. Rather than the thump of blood valves, Grimwalkers have a sort of magic hum that pulses their circulatory system.)

camila, next to a chalk board with far too many papers taped to it: so hunter is a.... grimwalker? and that means he doesn’t have a bilesac, which is... bad? eda (expert in palismen & being chronically ill): right, but you said that little bird of his healed him, it lit up his chest, right? and a bilesac is supposed to be attached to your heart, so there might be something like it he has that can ward off infections, and with that extra bit of magic his palisman gave him, I’m sure it’s stronger than ever lilith (historian): i don’t know. i’m still worried about the possession. i can’t imagine a near death experience was great for his heart. then again, i suppose someone with an galdorstone can’t really suffer from a heart attack. raine (former teacher, mainly here for emotional support): didn’t you say luz got the mold once, too? i’m sure whatever his biology is, it’s strong enough to at least handle that darius (the only one of them who’s ever met two grimwalkers): he’s been living in the castle his entire life and he’s worn a mask the entire time! who’s to say he’s even had a mold before? i’m sure it would have been fine before, but even with a palisman’s help, a possession isn’t something you recover from easily. what if he doesn’t even have--what’s the human word for this, again? camila:.... antibodies? darius: YES!!! WHAT IF HIS IMMUNE SYSTEM IS FUCKED UP!
hunter (can hear them yelling from the other room): do you think i should tell darius this isn’t the first time i’ve gotten sick? luz (has watched eda have similar freakouts about her being human): let’s just give them some space for now

Hunter and Willow both strike me as people who would absolutely love parenting and would 100% have kids together. And most people roll with Grimwalker biology not being a terribly big problem- at most I've seen a child with no magic or a galdorstone heart. Moringmark's au is probably the most interspecies offspring issues I've seen and that's between luz and Amity. But I've never seen the potential outcome Hunter could be straight up infertile- he wasn't born, after all, perhaps Grimwalkers are by their design meant to be one-off creatures that don't reproduce. Or- maybe worse, honestly, I think it would hurt more- they're not genetically compatible. Plenty of similar species can't crossbreed. Or, actually. No, worse than THAT. Many many hybrids have significant health issues as a result of their conflicting biology. Most are sterile. Ligers are essentially unable to stop growing and struggle beneath their own weight and have heart issues supporting their own bodies. The dogxim (fox/dog) hybrid showed signs of being significantly more susceptible to diseases than either parent. An overwhelming amount of hybrid offspring are stillborn or die in early infancy. Even those that survive childhood tend to be weaker, unhealthy, and often die young. They usually have big issues with their diets and what they can eat. I've never seen anymore touch on it and I think it's an interesting concept to explore with these characters.

Hunter & Vee
(Because, apparently, Hunter doesn’t have enough character parallels already.)
Tumblr media
Quite a few people have already said that something interesting about Hunter being in the Human Realm is the sheer amount of connections he’ll find there. To the potential Philip and Caleb’s backstories, their statues, the Golden Guards’ emblem being the Gravesfield crest, there’s a lot there for him to discover about  his predecessor’s life.
But also there’s Vee. And I’ve just realized that she’s got a lot in common with Hunter when you really think about it.
Firstly, they’re both Grimwalkers, aren’t they?
Tumblr media
Basilisks were extinct, but Philip brought them back, likely in the same way he made Hunter and the rest of the Golden Guards. All you need are a few magical ingredients, a bone of the original species, and then you have a number of basilisks for whatever purpose arises. Interestingly enough, the books Hunter’s looking at in Labyrinth Runners seem to imply that Grimwalkers themselves used to be known as an extinct species, so I can’t help but wonder if Philip himself banned their creation in order to keep everyone off the scent of his own ones.
Tumblr media
Adding onto that last point, the entire reason that Hunter and Vee exist is to be to Philip’s advantage one way or another. Hunter is a Grimwalker of Caleb, of the man Philip feels betrayed him. Philip wants him back, but only on his terms, and so Hunter is the forever-occurring test. Hell, it’s unlikely that Philip’ll ever achieve that goal of creating a perfect brother for himself, but I doubt he’ll ever understand that, either.
As for Vee and the rest of the basilisks, their purpose is to give Philip more information about the Day of Unity and how the Draining Spell would work. The Collector is the one who initially gave Philip the Draining Spell, but basilisks drain magic as a part of their biology, so using them as research could only assist Philip as he slowly neared the day of the eclipse.
Tumblr media
Even their NAMES prove how much Philip really values other people - anyone other than humans, that is. Vee is Vee, or the roman numeral for Number Five, and Hunter, not even a person in Philip’s eyes, is given Philip’s own title for a name. Philip can't waste time naming them all, after all; that’d be using far too much brainpower and emotional attachment that he simply does not have, and so Hunter it is.
Tumblr media
They’re also both powerless to a point, though both of them now have ways to overcome that obstacle. Basilisks do not have magic inherently, but they are capable of taking it from other things and then using it themselves, though they’ll run out eventually. Hunter, on the other hand, has found himself a palisman - Flapjack - whose inherent magic has bonded deep with Hunter’s own style as they fight together.
Then there's the Philip Trauma(tm).
Tumblr media
When they are discovered in their hiding places, their reactions are about the same. Luz finds Vee and Vee panics; declares that she’s never going back to the Demon Realm because Philip is there, and immediately jumps straight to the worst conclusion: that she’s going to have to go on the run from him again.
Hunter is the same. When the Coven Scouts recognize him and tell him that Philip is looking for him, he needs Gus’ help to calm him down from an anxiety attack.
Tumblr media
Even the 'prophecy’ given to Vee by her camp friend in Yesterday’s Lie fits both Vee and Hunter pretty damn well. Guilt and fear.... a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guilt and fear makes Vee rebel against draining the rats, gets her punished, most likely. Guilt and fear makes every last Golden Guard betray Philip, because in the end, they realize that he’s not someone anyone can trust. Hunter is a good kid. Vee is a good kid. Therefore, they are destined to always oppose Philip, no matter what he wants. Hunter is a self-fulfilling prophecy; the Golden Guards always betray Philip. Vee is always going to disagree with Philip.
...
I just think that Hunter and Vee could be a very formidable duo against Philip, should he regenerate in the Human Realm and begin to cause trouble again. God knows they deserve maybe more than anyone to put him in his place. I hope that their similarities can be explored somewhat in s3, and I also believe they could be rather healing for each other. They both need friends.
Also, as a sidetone; I suppose that at the end of the day, all we can hope is that the parallels between Hunter and Vee stay true to this scene as well (and I know they will).
Tumblr media
Camila’s going to love Hunter, too.

Headcanon:
Since King is a titan, he’s immune to the boiling rain and sea of the isles. But he also absolutely hates getting wet, so much so that he’s never actually come close to being in the boiling rain. The fact that he doesn’t know that he’s immune plus his complete hatred of getting wet means that he’s never actually gone outside during a rainstorm, even if he’s got a shield to protect him. The rain starts falling and King always goes as far away from it as possible.

If it turns out that yes, all of that stuff in the intro happened in less than two months, then we'll have our first confirmed weird biology fact about Grimwalkers:
Grimwalker hair grows more than ten times faster than human hair.
And to be clear, that would be the only confirmed difference so far. Everything else was speculation and headcanons based on the ingredients.
