Yes. My parents held a very boisterous wake for my grandfather after his death. My grandpa was a notorious party animal, hosting Christmas and 4th of July parties that had 200+ attendees so my parents held a rager in the night of his funeral where everyone got ridiculously hammered. They thought everyone left but discovered my uncle passed out in the bathroom mid-morning the next day.

colonel potter is sort of the reaganization of mash. like i always see ppl talk about mash’s move from a blatant critique of the american military industrial complex to “war is bad but what can you do 🤷‍♀️”. but like if you think about it, the show begins towards the ends of the vietnam war and two years after kent state. america is at its height of anti-war protests and there’s the widest trust gap between the us government and the people since probably ever. the show’s first couple of seasons are also happening at the same time as watergate and the impeachment. so early seasons mash is commenting and examining the anti-war progressive movement of the 70s which was also aligned with second wave feminism and the civil rights movement. like alan alda quite literally ushers in a new era of masculinity.

only as time goes on and vietnam ends, white mainstream progressives kinda… sell out. the youth movement grows up and experiences the booming economy of the 80s. they realize they can afford a new home in the suburbs on a one salary job so being mad at the us government takes a back seat to the prospect of participating in us heyday capitalism. then, in 1981, the anti-christ ronald reagan comes into office and it’s really good to be a white, heterosexual, middle class (and up), american. so mainstream america isn’t really feeling like critiquing the us government or, especially, the military industrial complex.

idk what this rant was other than to say that i think maybe mash got kinda reaganified. i mean later seasons of mash still examine the horror of war but there’s less portrayal of the american military as an incompetent entity that’s drowning itself in its own bureaucracy in the name of american exceptionalism.

and i enjoy later seasons of mash. i particularly love how they chilled out with the rape culture-esque jokes. i also am fascinated by bj whose mind seems to be a 24/7 stanford prison experiment.

y’all remember that scene in mad men when sally gets upset at glenn for enlisting? that’s the vibes here. “you hate the war. what about kent state? you were crying. you were gonna join the movement”
