Probably controversial and I'm definitely biased, but a skater who is mostly known for being a jumping machine (and those jumps aren't even pretty by any standards) and whose skating holds no beauty, shouldn't be scored higher than a skater whose skating is poetry in motion and who delivers a high-difficulty programme with grace and beauty.

2023 GPF Thoughts - Sr Men
ilia malinin (usa) made history. first 4a in a short program. highest tech ever in a short program. first person to land all six quads in a competition. however. he NEEDS to work on his components. he needs better choreo. he needs more engagement with the music. he needs to work on the ease and flow of his edges and extensions. his component scores should not have been what they were. i will say that they're markedly better than last year. but they are nowhere near his top competitors (shoma, yuma, kevin on his best days). and if he wants to truly be a force in men's figure skating, they need to be. 1 SP / 1 FS / 1
shoma uno (jpn) is honestly that bitch. his EASE. his EDGES. the HEIGHT he manages on his jumps. the way he threw in a 3a+eu+3f at the end of his free skate after popping the second 3a. absolute insanity. his components are off the charts. he deserves 10s. the musicality, the nuances, the outstanding choreo in both programs... give shoma the 10. he deserves it. (tbqh. he deserves to win. shoma is what figure skating is supposed to be - the combination of technical ability and performance. not just one.) 2 SP / 2 FS / 2
yuma kagiyama (jpn) has gotten So Much Better in just one season. carolina has worked absolute WONDERS with his presentation and skating skills, and while he does still have a couple areas to improve (posture and facial engagement are the two i noted on first watch) he's shaping up to be absolutely incredible. gorgeous air positions, great choreo, deep flowing edges. i didn't 100% love his short but his free skate was beautiful. 3 SP / 4 FS / 3
adam siao him fa (fra) is on the rise, and i'm so excited for him to keep growing. the tech is there, and his grit to fight for those quad landings is so good. he needs work on the flow and expression that others like kevin and shoma have, because he's not there yet, but i can see glimpses of it. can't wait to see how he does at euros. can we get a repeat???? 6 SP / 3 FS / 4
kao miura (jpn) is my son. that's my son. my beloved chaos nerd. his attack on titan free skate is so nerdy and so him it hurts. and the way he threw in the 4t+3t after fumbling the first combo attempt at the end of his short... an icon. hope he recovers from his illness quickly, i love watching him skate and want him to be at his best for jpn nationals, 4c, and hopefully worlds. he fought SO HARD through his free skate, he gets all my respect. 4 SP / 5 FS / 5
kevin aymoz (fra) is one of my favorite male skaters of all time. the only worthy successor to javier fernandez's program component scores. so sad he didn't have good skates, his programs are absolutely jaw dropping when done well. his expression and musicality are unmatched. i hope he and silvia have a chat and that he does better at euros. 5 SP / 6 FS / 6

I saw god in Kaori’s 2A. Like her speed into and out of the jump, running edge, and ice coverage for that one jump alone is insane.

Grand Prix Final 2023 | Shoma Uno and coach Stéphane Lambiel at the end of Shoma's short program performance
From Shoma's post SP interview [x]: --You also did a fist pump, which is rare. Uno: Stephane gave me a fist pump, so I responded. Stephane was also very depressed after the NHK Trophy. I think he was sad because he saw my daily practice and I performed in the best way possible, but it ended up looking as if it wasn't that way. However, I was really happy that Stephane felt like that, and I am approaching this competition with the hope that I can respond to him with the same kind of performance again from now on. [...] -- Regarding the fist pump, you said it was because coach Lambiel did it, but wasn't it because of your own joy? Uno: It was more like a "whew" feeling than a fist pump. Like, "Well, you did a good job." But I thought it would be nicer for viewers to see a fistpump as an expression of joy. Maybe it will make it easier to write a headline (smiles). I didn't mean to do that, but when it comes to the results, skaters should just be happy. There's no benefit in being too hard on yourself. It would make viewers happier if I smiled even if my performance was bad, or if I was honestly happy if my performance was good, but I don't do that (smiles). [I did it] because I was thinking about how Stephane would feel.

This year's Grand Prix Final is taking place at the same venue as the Cup of China in YOI (Capital Indoor Stadium, FYI Beijing Olympics was held there, too) and this adds so many amazing and nostalgic vibes to the utter thrill this event gives me. It's so great to see the venues from YOI live and in technicolour in an irl skating competition and inhale the atmosphere and ponder about how much more realism this will add to YOI during my next rewatch. Only actually being there could beat this.

2023 GPF Thoughts - Sr Dance
madison chock and evan bates (usa) are still on top of their game. two extremely solid programs. i am in love with their time/dali/pink floyd free dance. my only complaint is that madi is STILL clearly better than evan, even after all these years. he needs to do better and skate up to her level. 1 RD / 1 FD / 1
charlene guignard and marco fabbri (ita) are my current favorite senior dance team. their programs are GORGEOUS, especially their theory of everything free dance. absolutely stunning. and their rhythm dance was the most fun of them all! their choreography and expression is top notch, and i wish they were rewarded more strongly for it. they're on par with madi and evan, not below them. 2 RD / 2 FD / 2
piper gilles and paul poirier (can) are so consistently beautiful. their turns, edges, and lifts are smooth and flowing, and their programs are wonderful. however. their wuthering heights fd costumes are the wrong color. they should have picked any color other than pink. 3 RD / 3 FD / 3
lilah fear and lewis gibson (gbr) are my favorite underdog team since olivia smart and adrian diaz (esp). they have so much fun every time they step on the ice, and their programs are wonderfully suited to them. that rocky free dance is *chefs kiss*. the judges need to start rewarding them for their new, genre-pushing style and execution rather than holding them to whatever they think the old, traditional standard is. i desperately need them to get a world medal, if not this season, then next. they deserve it. 4 RD / 4 FD / 4
laurence fourier beaudry and nikolaj sorensen (can) are soooo beautiful to watch. their flow across the ice is wonderful, and their programs are so well-suited to their skating. i'm OBSESSED with their top gun rhythm dance. what a way to take the 80s theme and run with it. piper and paul better watch out, because laurence and nikolaj are worthy successors, and they're out to prove it. 5 RD / 5 FD / 5
marjorie lajoie and zachary lagha (can) are equally as beautiful as laurence and nikolaj. great speed, smooth edges, and wonderful lines. their free dance is so goddamn pretty, i love it so much. they're equally as hungry for success as laurence and nikolaj too, and i love seeing the depth of talent in canada's ice dance program. would not be surprised if we get a canada-majority or canada sweep world ice dance podium soon, with marjorie and zach on it. 6 RD / 6 FD / 6
