Growing up, I realized that everyone wants you to have a solid grasp on who you are at such a young age. You were expected to have at least an inkling of the one thing you wanted to do with the rest of your life right out of kindergarten. It never made sense to me. In high school, you’re expected to know for sure. If you didn’t know, you were told to hurry up before you graduate or it’ll be too late!
I never understood how everyone could function so easily. Even the failures somehow failed successfully. The world wasn’t built for dysfunctional people like me - or, at least, Miami wasn’t. Carmine told me new wild stories about Gotham every time he visited, usually with a touch of disdain. It sounded like heaven to me. Surely, in a city like that, I’d fit in and find at least some semblance of who Ryan Campbell is, right? Apparently not.
~~~
The first time I met Oswald, I felt as if maybe things would change. As he had made his way up the hill to the chicken coop, the first thing I noticed about him were his eyes. Clear blue, with a smoldering fervor deep inside them. He was a man who knew exactly what he wanted, and it was clear he had the ambition to reach for it. He had caught me after talking to Carmine, claiming to sense something similar in me. I was different, he told me. The fact that I didn’t seem to care about anything was refreshing to him.
After he left, I locked myself in the bathroom and stared into the mirror. “Who are you?” I said after a few minutes of deafening silence. “What do you want?”
My reflection didn’t answer. Typical.
~~~
The second time I met Oswald, I wasn’t in any better of a mood. My anxiety over my crisis failed to fade, and Liza’s suspicious behavior wasn’t making it any better. I had called Oswald, frantic after catching Liza spiking Carmine’s tea, and reveled in the fact that he hadn’t sounded surprised to hear from me. “Meet me at Robinson Park in one hour. We’ll talk there.”
It was cold when I got to the park, though I hadn’t waited long for Oswald to arrive with a large man practically a foot taller than him in tow. I explained what I had seen in detail, and he nodded thoughtfully when I finished. “We shouldn’t do anything to raise suspicion just yet,” he mused. We? “I highly doubt Fish’s goal is to kill Falcone, just get him out of the picture, so you needn’t worry for his safety. But, that doesn’t mean this is over.”
The smolder was back in his eyes, an almost dangerous blaze that I’m sure would leave me burned if I decided to get too close. But I didn’t care.
After a few silent moments, I told him he was right about what he said the last time we spoke. I didn’t care about anything a Falcone should care about. I didn’t want the money, the power, any of it.
“Everyone wants something,” he had said. “But I cannot seem to figure out what you want.”
“I want to be your friend.”
He looked almost taken aback. To be fair, I hadn’t known I was going to say that until the words were already out of my mouth. “As… honored as I am to accept your offer of friendship, that’s not exactly what I mean.”
“Well,” I said, “we’ve only just met. You’ll have plenty of time to figure me out.”
~~~
Now, I was still no closer to finding out anything about myself. After 3 years of living in Gotham, I still had no idea who Ryan Campbell was. And I feared I never would.
“Everyone has a motive, a passion,” Oswald was telling me, back at the club. “Something that drives them.” If only that were true, I thought wryly.
“Have you figured out what mine is yet?”
Oswald looked at me, long and hard. Sometimes, I wondered how someone like him must see the world. Someone full of life, full of passion and ideas and the drive to do something must see the world in such vivid colors. Deep emerald green. Rich, flowery lilac. The same bright, icy blue as Oswald’s eyes that seemed to stare right into my soul and refused to stop looking for a vibrant color that I wasn’t sure existed in me.
“No, not yet.”
I huffed out a laugh; dry and humorless. “Be sure to tell me if you do.”
Oswald’s gaze softened uncharacteristically, the shards of ice in his eyes melting into warm, inviting pools. “I will.”
EW | Paul Wesley directing Batwoman (1X17) 🎥 🎬.
After a month-long hiatus, Batwoman finally returns this coming Sunday with a fresh episode directed by The Vampire Diaries alum Paul Wesley, and EW has your exclusive look at him working behind-the-scenes.
In the episode, titled “A Narrow Escape,” Kate (Ruby Rose) hangs up the cowl for a bit because she’s still dealing with the trauma of murdering August Cartwright. Unfortunately, an old Batman foe named the Detonator chooses this time return and terrorize the city by strapping bombs to Gotham's everyday heroes to see if they're willing to sacrifice themselves to save others. "What I really enjoyed about this episode is that it’s quite grounded in the sense that it is a 'race against time' main plot. So it’s quite fast paced and energetic but of course there is a lot of character development," Wesley tells EW via email.
Meanwhile, Alice goes through hell after being imprisoned in Arkham Asylum, which is where Kate left her at the end of the previous installment. This was Wesley's "favorite portion of the episode to shoot" because it felt like "One Flew Over the Cuckcoo's Nest meets Prison Break meets Clockwork Orange," he says. For a taste of what he's talking about, check out the image below.
"This is a scene where the Arkham warden is essentially trying to perform a lobotomy sorts to 'cure' her of the fantasy world she is living in. But more than anything, to try and break her down and make her a prisoner of the system/ facility. It had a Clockwork Orange meets Cuckoo's Nest feel to it, making it very uncomfortable to shoot," he says, adding that working with Skarsten was one of the best parts of helming this episode. "She's an absolutely brilliant actor, and I don't say that lightly. I have worked with a lot of people over the years and it was such a joy to watch her on the monitors because I had no idea what she was going to do next. She’s spontaneous but always in complete control of who her character is, emotional but also adds a sense of irony and humor, not to mention so easy and nice to work with. She is really just a joy for any director and I hope to work with her again."
At this point in his career, Wesley has directed episodes of The Vampire Diaries, Legacies, and Roswell, New Mexico; however, his Batwoman gig stands out because it was his introduction to the DC Universe.
"I have directed and worked on a lot of supernatural/heightened series but I had never done anything in the DC world. There is something quite exciting about being a small part of such a massive franchise. I am actually not a big comic book type of guy, but I love Batman, particularly Christopher Nolan's version. I also thought Joker was one of the best films of last year, I watched it several times. So to be involved in this world, so to speak, was extremely appealing and very humbling," he says. "I have also been wanting to work with [executive producer] Greg Berlanti and his team for a while, so I was thrilled to have the chance to do so. I have known Greg for many years, back when I had a part on Everwood well over a decade ago. The [Batwoman] showrunner Caroline Dries is also a good friend of mine from the The Vampire Diaries days, very talented, and we have always had a great relationship. The first episode of television I ever directed was actually a script Caroline wrote and we had a great experience together."
Opinon on discovery made in Batwoman 1x17 "A Narrow Escape." SPOILERS BELOW!!
Okay so I'm going to say this and if you don't like it okay if you do okay. But I'm going to say this cause a lot of people on youtube are just...going off and it's over the stupidest things and I feel like no one's is actually taking a minute to just sit down and actually and I mean actually come up with a thought that makes sense. Okay so this is a bit of spoiler for episode 17 of Batwoman so if you haven't seen it or any of the episodes yet then don't read this. If you have then get ready for me going slightly off.
Okay so Kate accidently killed Cartwright, the guy who kidnapped her sister Beth and is one of the main reasons why Beth turned into Alice in the first place, and she has been going through some major PTSD. So she goes through this whole "I'm not worthy to wear the Bat symbol, I'm a terrible person, blah blah blah" mood. Then Luke comes clean to her and tells her that Batman (Bruce) has killed before. Apparently he killed the Joker five years ago. Now a whole bunch of people on YouTube have been getting their underwear in a bunch over this talking about "oh they ruined Batman, I hate this show, they just tear down Batman to make Batwoman look good, another problem with this stupid show, CW can't get anything right, blah blah blah, woof woof woof." People do you know what a brain is? No, seriously, do you? Cause if you ask me this makes for an interesting plot. Currently the CW can't use Batman cause of "legal reasons" (stupid but what can you do?) so that's one of the main reasons why he isn't in the show and we can't have Joker cause again "legal reasons." This just might be how they're handling the reason why we're probably never gonna see Joker on Batwoman. We MAY see Batman in the future. Don't forget we couldn't have Superman on Supergirl season 1 but now not only do we have him we're getting a show for him so I wouldn't count out the possibility of Batman not showing up any time soon. Lets see what the rest if this season and next season bring. Heck we got an older version of him during Crisis (granted he DEFINITELY was a killer) and the mystery of why he's gone is still afoot. Now onto the Bat murdering Joker. How do we know he killed him? We just heard about it. What if Joker is not dead? What if Batman just thinks he murdered Joker? I mean come on, would you not put that pass Joker to do something like that? And maybe Jokers "death" is what made Batman leave in the first place. Ever think of that? Or can you think of any other reason good enough to make him leave Gotham to fend for itself? I'm all ears and it better be a good reason. Next, how is this ruining Batman for you? IT'S A FREAKING TV SHOW! GET OVER YOURSELVES. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT DON'T WATCH IT. NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TOO. I DON'T KNOW WHAT KIND OF MASOCHISM YOUR INTO BUT THIS AIN'T IT MY FRIEND. It's literally a tv show it ain't like it's some official comic book canon. God I remember how a whole bunch of people were mad because Kevin's crisis Batman was a killer. Ever head of the multiverse? Not all versions of Batman can good. Nazi version, Crime syndicate, multiverse sweethearts, multiverse. And yes they might have different names but you know what I mean. But seriously, don't take it that serious. It's not that deep. You obsessors are just humoring yourselves, no one else. Not to mention if Batman did kill Joker can we all just agree that he had it coming? I mean has a rap sheet of the horrible things he's done that is longer then my whole body. Same thing goes for Cartwright. I mean the guy literally kidnapped and held a poor innocent girl hostage and twisted her fragile and abused her turning into the psychopath that has tormented Gotham and he kept Kate's moms severed head in his refrigerator. PLUS HE WAS THE ONE WHO CUT HER HEAD OFF IN THE FIRST PLACE. SO EXCUSE THE HECK OUT KATE FOR LOSING CONTROL AND KILLING HIM. DON'T SAY YOU WOULDN'T DO THE SAME BECAUSE BELIEVE ME YOU'RE JUST LYING TO YOURSELF. Plus this offers up a good story arc for Kate. Y'all up here saying Kate can't come back from this. How many heroes in the Arrowverse have killed somebody, intentionally or accidently? Have they come back from it? Yes. It made for good story telling so it will make for good story telling to. And this shoes that Kate is human meaning she has flaws and makes terrible mistakes/choices and that she's not perfect. None of the Arrowverse heroes are. That's what makes them interesting. So in closing please just think about these things more. And if you can't stand it, why are ruining it for everyone else. What do you get out of that?
