5 Crises Republicans Made up to Distract You
Here are five totally made-up “crises” Republicans have invented to distract from the real crises facing Americans today: the growing concentration of wealth, the worsening climate crisis, and the undermining of our democracy.
Fake crisis #1:  Anything they claim is “woke.”
Although Republicans struggle to define what “woke” even means, they’re constantly using it as a weapon to combat anything that seeks to foster tolerance and acceptance.
Pride flags? Woke!
Books about Rosa Parks? Woke!
Green M&M’s? The wokest!
Fortunately, most Americans think being informed and aware of social injustice…which is what being “woke” really means... is a good thing.
Fake crisis #2: The panic over trans people.
Trans people just want the right to exist safely as their true selves, like everyone else. And despite the lies spewed by some Republicans, there’s not a shred of evidence that they are a threat to anyone. But they’ve become easy scapegoats for the GOP, who vilify them and threaten to criminalize their very existence.
Fake crisis #3: Critical race theory
In reality, critical race theory is mostly taught in universities — like quantum physics or philosophy. It's really not taught in K-12, nor is it dangerous.
It’s merely a framework to understand the role that race and racism have played in shaping America’s laws and institutions. But Republicans have deliberately turned this obscure academic phrase into a weapon to silence any discussion of race they don't like.
Unfortunately, this includes teaching many basic historical facts.
Fake crisis #4: “Couch potatoes.”
Republicans are whipping up anger over welfare recipients supposedly abusing the system.
The reality is most people who collect benefits already hold jobs and work exceedingly hard.
Like Ronald Reagan’s claim about so-called “welfare queens”, the “couch potato” myth is a cruel racial dog whistle. In fact, the vast majority of Americans who receive government benefits are white.
We should be asking why so many jobs pay such low wages that workers need government help to get by?
Fake crisis #5: “Out of control government spending.”
Another lie. Apart from mandatory spending like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, government spending has actually fallen more than 30% in the past 50 years as a percentage of our total economy.
[9.6% in 1973  vs. 6.6% in 2022, a decrease of  31.25%]
Yes, the national debt is a problem, but in recent years, among its biggest drivers have been the Bush and Trump tax cuts, which have added nearly $10 trillion to the debt since their enactment.
All five of these so-called crises have been manufactured by the GOP. They’re entirely made up.
Why? To deflect attention from the near record share of the nation’s income and wealth now going to the richest Americans.
As the wealthy pour money into politics — largely into the GOP — they don’t want the rest of America to notice they’re rigging the economy for their own benefit, that their greed is worsening the climate crisis, and they’re undermining our democracy.
So the game of the Republican Party and their major donors is to deflect attention — to use fake crises to disguise what’s really going on.
Don’t let them get away with it.

Sen. Bernie Sanders said late Tuesday night that it was time to "put up or shut up" for any U.S. lawmaker who claims to fight for the working class as he and other progressives in Congress vowed to insert paid sick leave into a labor agreement between railway workers and the nation's rail companies.
With a vote in the U.S. House as early as Wednesday morning, Sanders was asked by MSNBC host Chris Hayes whether Congress has the authority to mandate that sick leave—the final key demand of railway workers unions who have battling the carriers for months—be added to the deal that congressional lawmakers have been asked by President Joe Biden to force through as a way to avert a strike by the workers that would have huge impacts on the national economy.
"Congress has the power to come up with an agreement in order to protect the economy," said Sanders. While he said that he doesn't know anybody who wants a strike—and acknowledged that such a work stoppage would hurt the broader economy—Sanders said the "bottom line" in this fight is quite clear.
"The bottom line," said Sanders, "is that the American people and workers throughout this country are profoundly disgusted by the kind of corporate greed that we are seeing. Everybody knows that billionaires are getting richer, working people are struggling, corporate profits are at an all-time high, and they're making goods unaffordable for ordinary Americans—that's the overall reality. And what you're seeing in the rail industry is that phenomenon in spades."
Citing statistics that show the major rail carriers have made an estimated $21 billion in profits over the last three quarters, another $25 billion in stock buybacks to enrich their wealthy investors, and multi-million dollar salaries to top executives, Sanders slammed the fact that the railway workers themselves "have zero—underline zero—guaranteed sick leave."
Watch the full interview:
youtube
On Tuesday night, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) introduced an amendment in the House that would add seven paid sick days to the labor contract proposal that was negotiated with the assistance of the White House earlier this year, but subsequently rejected by a number of the railway unions for lack of sick leave. With the strike deadline looming, Biden on Monday angered many rank-and-file union members and outside progressives by asking Congress to force through the previous contract deal without pushing for the inclusion of sick leave.
Tumblr media
While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday backed Biden's call to push through a vote on the contract "with no poison pills or changes to the negotiated terms," but in a Dear Colleague letter issued Tuesday evening she adjusted that course by indicating that two votes would be held, explaining to members:
• First, we will consider the strike-averting legislation to adopt the Tentative Agreement, as negotiated by the railroad companies and labor leaders.
• Next, we will have a separate, up-or-down vote to add seven days of paid sick leave for railroaders to the Tentative Agreement.
• Then, we will send this package to the Senate, which will then go directly to President Biden for signature.
With Sanders vowing to fight for the same kind of inclusion in the Senate, reporting from Capitol Hill indicated that there may be enough Republican support for adding the paid sick leave to bypass the 60-vote threshold and overcome a filibuster in the upper chamber.
Tumblr media
Asked if he thought he could get the ten necessary votes from the GOP in the Senate, Sanders said, "Well, who knows?" as he mentioned that Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the party caucus' whip, has indicated "significant" support for the amendment among Republicans.
"Look, you have a number of Republicans who claim—claim—to be supporters of the working class," he added. "Well, if you are a supporter of the working class how are you going to vote against the proposal which provides guaranteed paid sick leave to workers who have none right now? So I am cautiously optimistic that we can get this done."
Tumblr media
Asked by Hayes if this represents a "put your money where your mouth is" moment for a Republican Party that has tried to claim the mantle of being the authentic blue-collar party, Sanders nodded in agreement.
"Put up or shut up," said Sanders. "If you can't vote for this, to give workers today—who really have hard jobs, dangerous jobs—if you can't give them paid sick leave, don't tell anybody that you stand with working families."

I know we all know that the cruelty is the point and the GOP is immune to charges of hypocrisy and all that, but still occasionally legislators say something and I just stop and wonder how they got this way.
The governor said she has met with leaders in health care, child care, retail, hospitality, banking, real estate, aerospace, law enforcement and the medical community during her statewide campaign to support Medicaid expansion. House Speaker Dan Hawkins, R-Wichita, and Senate President Ty Masterson, R-Andover, responded by calling her efforts a “welfare tour.”
These smug fucksticks have made it their mission to make things as awful as possible for residents of Kansas. They sneer at Medicaid expansion even as over half the rural hospitals in the state are at risk of closing. Now, anyone who has been paying attention to US politics knows that rural areas tend to vote more conservative. That's how much this party doesn't feel the need to even pretend to care about their constituents. Definitely a real representative government we have going on there.
At the Trox Gallery, she was approached by Jean-Ellen Kegler, a former director of the city’s visitor’s bureau, who said she moved back to Kansas after being gone for 25 years because Kelly was governor. Kegler, now retired, also expressed dismay about the messaging from GOP leaders that Medicaid expansion would benefit people who are too lazy to work. “We’ve heard that ever since the New Deal: ‘People are lazy. People are trying to bilk the government.’ And I think if we’re honest with ourselves, we see who is bilking the government, and it’s not the poor,” Kegler said. “It’s those who have money. And I don’t like to use the word ‘greed,’ but in this case, we’re seeing the greedy side of capitalism.”

"He is a racist, fascist cult leader determined to destroy American democracy. Those facts must be repeated over and over this year, because so many Americans appear willing to re-elect him president."
"When they do write about Trump’s many scandals, political reporters often feel the need to provide “balance.” So they write about purported Biden scandals that they know Republicans have fabricated. Congressional Republicans understand this dynamic, and they have ginned up an impeachment of Biden without any evidence, counting on the press to cover it.
"The reporters who fall for this gimmick can’t handle the truth: that the GOP no longer exists as a legitimate political party and is merely a collection of Trump lackeys who will deceive the American people to further his autocratic interests. Reporters don’t want to admit that this presidential race will be a contest between a reasonable, centrist Democrat and a would-be dictator."

Only ONE party has spent the last four decades (starting with Anita Bryant in the 1970s saying gay people 'recruit' and molest children) and actively encouraging discrimination and violence upon a group of people who are already struggling with not being dealt the simple life that comes with being born cis-gendered and straight.
They are pissed. Can you blame them? Empathetic people are also pissed off on their behalf for the heartless suffering and deaths right-wingers caused to win votes from a fearful close-minded minority of church-going sheep.
The Republican Party has lost ANY claims to moral authority with their unshakable devotion to Donald Trump and the evil & lies he continues to spew daily.
Karma is going to be a huge bitch because Republicans are soon only to be remembered only as the party of: hatred, racism, crime, violence, treason and sedition.
No one will invoke the name of the GOP without making other people just laugh because Republicans have proven they stand for nothing but greed, even at the price of the atmosphere of our planet.
and they've been too stupid and too short sighted in the past seven years to predict that such an outcome was inevitable.
Why in the demise of Republicans inevitable?
Because MOST Americans are truly decent people.
Decent people are now rejecting right-wingers in droves because it has become obvious that the Republican Party has utterly lost sight of the importance of simple human decency.

Everyone knows what is happening here. Everyone sees it.
There are those who's hate, greed, jealousy, and envy drive them to the point they'll destroy the world to get Trump. Not a majority by any means, yet still powerful.
Then there are those who's ability to suspend reality has been pushed clear over the cliff. Those are the really powerful. It's those people who are going to make this election un-cheatable.
It's also destroying this Country in a way that might just be irreparable.

Biden Finally Visits East Palestine 1 Year After Train Derailment
Tumblr media
US President Joe Biden speaks after receiving an operational briefing from officials on the continuing response and recovery efforts at the site of a train derailment which spilled hazardous chemicals a year ago in East Palestine, Ohio on February 16, 2024.
Over a year after a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, spilling dangerous chemicals, President Joe Biden finally took time out of his schedule and paid the small community a visit on Friday.
Biden assured the locals that the U.S. government would perform its duties and stay in the region until the cleanup works were finished after meeting with local leaders and receiving a briefing from the Environmental Protection Agency.
He commended the bravery and tenacity of the community and maintained that they are not “defined by the derailment.” He also chastised Norfolk Southern for failing to take the necessary safety measures with its hazardous cargo.
However, locals in the area expressed frustration that Biden waited a whole year before he decided to make the trek to East Palestine. They also claimed that he has not made any effort to get the small community back on its feet.
— RNC Research (@RNCResearch) February 17, 2024
“Let me be clear. While there are acts of God, this was an act of greed that was 100% preventable,” Biden said.
The incident on February 3rd, 2023, did not result in any fatalities, but it did cause nausea and headaches, among other symptoms, from the inhalation of toxic chemicals. It additionally prompted anxiety and fears about potential long-term health hazards to rise in the area, affecting both people and animals.
“We’ve tested the air, the water, [and] the soil quality,” Biden continued.
Republicans, particularly former President Donald Trump, who visited the region soon after the derailment, unlike Biden, have criticized the current Democrat president for breaking his commitment to visit the scene of the accident soon after.
However, Biden did visit the small community today, over a year later, speaking with impacted locals and authorities, including the town’s mayor, Trent Conaway, who had expressed disapproval towards Biden.
Conaway stated on Friday that the meeting had been “long awaited” and that he intended to concentrate on “things we agree with,” such as the town’s long-term health issues and financial stability.
“We will not be defined by this single event, but rather by our response to it and our perseverance,” Conaway said.
“Holding the train operator accountable” was Biden’s pledge.
“My administration ordered Norfolk Southern to clean up the mess it created and ensure it was done right,” he said. “That includes an executive order I signed to continue our priority to hold Norfolk Southern fully accountable for this disaster and any long-term effects that are able to be identified as time goes on.”

Russia Manipulating American Democracy
Vladimir Putin has been actively engaged in manipulating the USA through the dark arts of digital disinformation for at least a decade. Russia manipulating American democracy via social media and having bought Trump some time back is going swimmingly. A brief look at the state of the Republican Party and the Trump candidacy for President can confirm that. America has been split down the middle with progressives on one side and the MAGA led conservatives on the other. The cosy coalition between MAGA and Putin’s Russia would strike cold warriors from the 1950’s as completely bizarre. Americans backing the military aspirations of an eastern demagogue and his police state is what we appear to be seeing. WTF? #UNGA President Donald J. Trump by National Archives and Records Administration is licensed under CC-CC0 1.0
Putin’s Russia Leading American Democracy a Merry Dance
For anybody who has been studiously ignoring the Russian machinations in America I would advise that it is time to pay attention. The world is heading into very dangerous territory with extreme greed and caveman bullying tactics leading the charge. Putin’s Russia has identified America’s points of vulnerability and gone to town on them with bots aplenty. Democracy has always largely been about the art of persuasion, ever since those early days in ancient Athens. Getting the vote via scare campaigns and corruption have been with us for millennia.
American’s Too Dumb To Realise Who Is Stealing Their Lunch
Americans are so dumb. Why? Because they always make everything about money. The Internet and the world wide web were developed by US government bodies. Then in 1993 President Bill Clinton privatised it and handed it over to the market with bugger all safe guards in place. Many of the problems we have with social media platforms not being held accountable for their content are because of this lack of meaningful oversight. The neoliberal mantra – let the market take care of it – reveals yet another black hole. It is actually the abdication of government responsibility and yet another societal failure costing lives and potentially destroying democracy. “Congress has followed the Supreme Court’s lead and enacted Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Section 230 offers internet service providers immunity from liability for content posted by third parties on their platforms. Brown notes that courts apply this liability shield broadly. Section 230 has protected providers from claims pertaining to intentional infliction of emotional distress, terrorism support, and defamation.’ - (https://www.theregreview.org/2021/12/21/stephen-social-responsibility-social-media-platforms/) Photo by Elena on Pexels.com Congress Is A Proven Failure Congress is a proven failure in addressing crucial crises effecting America, as witnessed by their inability to get gun control laws passed. The politics rules the beast in the US; and right now the Trump led MAGA GOP exposes the very worst manifestation of this governmental failure. Some 400 million people are being coerced and manipulated by special interest forces like corporate lobbyists. The system has been corrupted and taken over by these vested interests to the detriment of ordinary Americans. Americans know this but half of them are rusted onto the camp controlled by the worst aspect of this distortion of democracy. The GOP lead with social issues and gather their support around identity politics. Christian Nationalism, anti-woke BS, white supremacy, and the intolerance for things like gender and sexual preference diversity. Meanwhile they are in bed with big business and the rentier economy, which has been decimating the wealth of the middle class since Reagan. Russian Bots Fuelling The Polarisation Of America Much of the inflammatory stuff on the Internet has been coming from Russian bots for many years. Winding up folk on forums and in online chat rooms is a Russian speciality. Spreading disinformation via the Internet and on social media in particular has been a winning strategy for Putin. Many Americans are too dumb to get this. Lots of ordinary folk have no idea how the Internet actually works. Ignorance provides a great operating ground for those with a dark intent to do their stuff. It has been an incredibly cost effective means of paralysing American democracy. The 2016 election of Donald Trump was greatly aided by the Russians spreading anti-Hilary Clinton stuff online. Fake news was rife on social media about Hilary. Americans are used to the lies and misinformation during elections, just this time it was coming from outside of the country for the purposes of spreading disinformation. Similarly, the Russians were at it big time in Britain in the lead up to the Brexit vote. Britain leaving the EU was a big win for Putin – it weakened both Britain and the EU. Photo by Sharefaith on Pexels.com The US Has Been Made Weaker By The Trump Years Russia manipulating American democracy makes the US weaker internally and externally. If you look at the last decade much of it has been taken up with Trump. Trump has filled the airwaves with chaotic crap about him everywhere you look. The nation has never been more polarised. Threats of violence from Trump supporters are never far away, as they try to lean on the institutions protecting democracy. Men resorting to caveman bullying and violence as exemplified by the January 6th, 2021, insurrection at the Capital. Extremism is most often a reactionary response to societal anxiety by a section of the community. Following the pandemic we have seen the rise of far right groups and Naziism in terms of increased visibility and numbers participating in marches and demonstrations. Fear of death is a powerful call to action but it can lead some in the wrong direction. Trump makes a habit of saying shocking things in public. This keeps him in the news and in the public eye. He is buffoon-like and this becomes a mitigating factor in the mind’s of many of his supporters. “Oh, that is only Trump talking!” However, around the orange Jesus are some very serious and nasty people capable of doing untold damage to the lives of many Americans. Indeed, history tells us that a similar false sense of levity surrounded Adolf Hitler in his early years. Many Germans did not take him too seriously until he became the Fuhrer. Of course, by then it was too late and the dictator went on to kill tens of millions of people globally. American democracy is becoming undone by the forces coalescing around Trump. Stupidity, greed, and the politics of grievance are fuelling the popularity of Trump’s second coming. Putin is in his corner, of course, pulling strings wherever he can. Photo by Artūras Kokorevas on Pexels.com Tucker Carlson Useful Idiot Interview With Putin “US talk show host Tucker Carlson's interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin began with a rambling half-hour lecture on the history of Russia and Ukraine. Mr Carlson, frequently appearing bemused, listened as Mr Putin expounded at length about the origins of Russian statehood in the ninth century, Ukraine as an artificial state and Polish collaboration with Hitler. It is familiar ground for Mr Putin, who infamously penned a 5,000-word essay entitled "On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians" in 2021, which foreshadowed the intellectual justification the Kremlin offered for its invasion of Ukraine less than a year later. Historians say the litany of claims made by Mr Putin are nonsense - representing nothing more than a selective abuse of history to justify the ongoing war in Ukraine.” - (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68255302) Robert Sudha Hamilton is the author of Money Matters: Navigating Credit, Debt, and Financial Freedom.  ©MidasWord Read the full article

Get To Know Me!
I was born in 1969. My parents were both born in 1947. They were never happy together and only got married because my mom was pregnant. My dad went to Vietnam when I was a baby.
I grew up in a very small town. We were working poor and there was some violence in the house - not much more than was normal at the time. I was a latchkey kid, watched a lot of TV, did a lot of vandalism and shoplifting. I did really bad at school, mainly because I didn't care. I was what was called an "art fag", and got bullied pretty much constantly.
I started drinking when I was 15, and was showing signs of severe alcoholism within a year or so. I started experiencing episodes of major depression around then. I got into punk rock and what was called "college rock" - Husker Du, the Replacements, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, REM, Sonic Youth, some of the DC hardcore stuff, but not Straightedge, which I thought was idiotic, Butthole Surfers, Pussy Galore, Gaye Bykers On Acid, Bongwater. I was into Nirvana, like everybody, but more into the female grunge bands and riot grrrl - Babes In Toyland, 7 Year Bitch, Bikini Kill, Team Dresch.
My alcoholism and depression got worse in the 90's. I can honestly say Cobain's suicide kept me alive - I had a shotgun but I thought that if I used it, people would think I was copying him, an idea I found disgusting. I got clean/sober in 1998.
I was in an abusive relationship when I got sober. She tried to physically abuse me, but I could defend myself against physical violence. I could not defend myself against mental and emotional abuse. We broke up repeatedly - for the last time in 2001. I was in a few relationships after that, some of which were less toxic than others. I decided to quit the relationship shitshow after my kid was born in 2009.
Parental responsibilities, work, chronic depression and the struggle to keep a roof over my head took up a decade or so.
Now I find myself in my 50's. My kid just started high school. I'm buying a house. I have two cats and I make art every day. I'm in a noisey free improv band. My job sucks.
The world I grew up in was a nightmare, but it was nowhere near as bad as the world today. Reagan was happy to have gays and junkies die of AIDS, but the GOP today is waging war on the LGBTQ+ community, on POC and on the poor. The Democrats make nicer promises, but they aren't actually doing shit.
I am disgusted by violence, greed, injustice, bigotry and I am also the most nihilistic asshole I know. I want everyone to be happy and I also want everything I see to be destroyed by fire. I am the embodiment of Generation X. I am the poster child for my fucked-over generation, insulted, written off and forgotten. I'm being totally sincere and this is also a fucking joke. I don't have any hope of making any difference, but I might be able to entertain myself.
I very much want to reach my cohort. I want to remind Gen X that there was a time when we were riled up about something. We cared about something. We were loud and vulgar and we weren't afraid to break shit.
We can't make the world a better place. We are way too broken for that. Maybe our kids can do better. But before they can make a better world, this one has to be destroyed. That's what I'm on about. I want to break shit. I want to get revenge. I want to tear down the rotten fucking world, so my kid can have something better. I don't mind dying - shit, I never really wanted to live in the first place.
And the idea of a bunch of broken, middle-aged grungepunk slackers rioting in the streets is pretty funny.
Anyway. Nobody else stepped up to be the Official Voice of Generation X, so it might as well be me.

Our shooting problem is related to both the NRA’s efforts to arm every American on behalf of gun manufacturers and the GOP’s efforts to normalize anti-social behavior and radicalize or delete every American. Both these issues are the fruit born of America’s greed problem. So while I do not agree that guns don’t kill people, people do. I would agree that guns don’t kill people, greedy people do. #ingreedwetrust”

"The Destroyer." From the Tejo-Bindu Upanishad. "A drop of glory."
24-25. The illusion of Brahma and all other beings takes place within one twinkling (of His eye). That should be known as Asana (posture), in which one has with ease and without fatigue (uninterrupted) meditation of Brahman; that is described by the word Kala (time), that is endless bliss and that is secondless. Everything else is the destroyer of happiness.
During waking moments, we position reality. This is a product of our inner posture determines how propagandized the outer one will be.
If we meditate on the Miracle, that is what expresses itself before us when we leave the seated position. If we struggle against it, fail to obtain purchase with the Holy Ghost inside, outside simply will not work.
Take the Mormons and Republicans who love to tell everyone "there is no such thing as this, there is no such thing as that..." but can't admit there is a such thing as a man who does this to innocent people:
youtube
Their inner posture rejects the Utter Truth, so the outer world is very, very confusing to them.
They take this confusion with them into the State House where they pretend they are very much like the young man and his mother, above who came to America with nothing to wear, eat, and nowhere to live and futz with the tax code all day long, as if the wolf were at their very doors.
The actual creation, the real one, tells a different story. How greed, corruption, poverty, inhumanity and sloppy, sloppy, sloppy ideas and methods about government are fatiguing this world to death and costing us many carefree years with which to end our lives.
The scriptures say if we are to have a lawful delusion of any kind it pertains to the opposite.
Which this is not. Compare and contrast...this little fuck wants to worry about the Pledge while 200 million persons remain homeless. Many are in his own country...
ihttps://www.businessinsider.com/gop-led-committee-meeting-begins-fight-over-pledge-of-allegiance-2023-2
Rather than belly ache over this and the rest of the minor petty things we have decided are important for some reason, take action. The Republicans and their sludge are not fit to govern. Their decisions have demonstrated a rote pattern of lawlessness, are unethical, uncouth and demonstrate a failure to connect with the proper purposes of government.
It's Time to Redistrict!
Write your local and city governments and ask them to evict local chapters of the RNC and remove their licenses to do business. The entire complex has committed fundraising fraud and violates the rights of protected classes at the National Level meaning they can legally be forced to cease operations at the local level.
Do not hesitate to stand up for yourself or your neighbor. Write, visit, or speak to representatives in your local government and insist your town or city charter is enforced.
AND don't forget, many Republican lawmakers are now guilty of a plethora of sex crimes. Check with the Center for Missing and Exploited Children to see if your favorite GOP Senator or Representative has been dipping his chicken and have them removed to a safe, safe distance. It's family values!

It Is Not Hypocrisy, It Is Projection.

There are two minutes of video that's been bothering me for weeks. They're two minutes in the middle of Wisecrack's video "A Philosopher Reacts To God's Not Dead." I've embedded just those two minutes below (or if you want to go to the original video at the right time, it's the two minutes starting at 5'38"). In those two minutes, Kevin Sorbo's character distributes sheets of paper to an intro to philosophy class, tells his students that they have to write an affirmation (and sign it!) that says "God is dead," and that it's worth 30% of their grade. Michael, the host of Wisecrack, reacts with incredulity, and rightly so. That simply Would Not Happen in a public university or college. So to Michael -- and myself as well -- the scene is a comedic strawman of the absurd. Except Michael -- and I -- forgot something pretty basic about bad actors. I've seen it over and over again with toxic people. They will almost always tell you what they're going to do... by accusing you of doing it. Or, in this case, had already been doing. Michael actually says it out loud at the end of those two minutes: "The goal of academic philosophy isn't to instill hardcore ideological concepts into the brains of impressionable young people." But that is exactly what Christian universities have been doing for decades right out there in the open. Many Christian colleges and universities require employees -- and students! -- to sign statements of faith, or covenants. Aside from the theological statements, these documents also tend to have some kind of clause about what you can and cannot do... and what you can and cannot say. Bethel University has on its "covenant" page a list of "character qualities and actions that should not be present in the lives of believers. For example: destructive anger, malice, rage, sexual immorality, impurity, adultery, evil desires, greed, idolatry, slander, profanity, lying, homosexual behavior, drunkenness, thievery, and dishonesty ." That's not my footnote, by the way. That's theirs, and it reads: " Colossians 3:5-8; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. Employees will not practice, advocate, or affirm these and other biblically proscribed behaviors." (Emphasis mine.) Not "while on the clock," not "in the classroom," or anything like that. At all. Ever. Ironically, this is right before their "diversity" page. For real. This is not an idle threat. Aside from anecdata I've heard about such agreements being enforced, "Inside Higher Ed" reported a year ago about a professor at Calvin University who was getting forced out for being an ally of LGBTQIA+ rights. If you're wondering whether the courts will do anything, the answer, at least as of January 2023, is no: "Students at colleges and universities operating on religious principles concerning marriage, sexual identity and gender won’t be blocked from receiving federal aid, the U.S. District Court in Oregon ruled this week." -- The Washington Times And the bigger lesson is easily observable in the rest of the education system as well. The constant pearl-clutching about "grooming" and "indoctrination" from the GOP around LGBTQIA+ issues seems hypocritical in the face of their efforts to ensure that children only get the "correct" education by inciting vigilante book banning, legal threats to librarians, and doing everything they can to eliminate mentions of diversity, until you realize it's not hypocrisy. They are projecting onto everyone else what they are about to do, just like a narcissistic gaslighting toxic partner in a relationship. They think that everyone else is out to indoctrinate children, to "groom" them to live a particular way... because that is what they intend to do. And they've very clearly already started to do it. Right in front of your eyes. Now, I want you to think back to every time since 2016 that you've marveled at the hypocrisy of the right wing in America. Think back to every outrageous accusation they've made about the left that is absolutely ludicrous. Now look back at those times with this lens. None of those were hypocrisy. They were telling you what they would do. What they will do. What they are doing. Ignore them at your peril.

As an aside: These kinds of statements of faith or covenants have a huge effect outside of academia as well. For example, as California Health Online reported last month, "As the University of California’s health system renews contracts with hundreds of outside hospitals and clinics — many with religious affiliations -- some of its doctors and faculty want stronger language to ensure that physicians can perform the treatments they deem appropriate, including abortions for women or hysterectomies for transgender patients." In 2016, one in six hospital beds in the US was at "a facility that complies with Catholic Directives that prohibit a range of reproductive health care services even when a woman’s life or health is in jeopardy," with that percentage reaching up to 40% in some regions. Now, after dealing with COVID-19, small and rural hospitals are staggering, with more than 200 rural hospitals currently at risk of closure in 2023, reducing the ability of people to "choose" an alternative even further.
