Democrats erupted in laughter on the House floor Wednesday when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) — who was presiding over the chamber — called for decorum.
The heckling came as House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) was delivering floor remarks about the debt ceiling, which has been the subject of high-stakes negotiations between GOP lawmakers and the White House.
As Scalise was urging the Senate and White House to take action on raising the borrowing limit — referencing the bill House Republicans passed last month — Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) called him a liar.
“We are in fact the only body in this town who has actually taken steps to address the debt ceiling and the spending problem in Washington. I would encourage the Senate to take up the bill, I would encourage the President to get engaged and address this problem, but we already have, the votes are on the board —” Scalise said before pausing to react to Bowman.
Bowman’s office confirmed to The Hill that it was the congressman who yelled “liar” while Scalise was speaking.
“Order,” Greene said from the dais, pounding her gavel.
“I ask that the House be in order and there be some decorum on the other side,” Scalise said.
After a roughly 15-second pause, Greene called for decorum in the chamber.
“The members are reminded to abide by decorum of the House,” she said.
Democrats in the chamber then erupted in laughter. Some members — including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Cori Bush (D-Mo.) — stood from their seats and started shouting.
As the laughter continued, Greene slammed her gavel a number of times.
The Hill reached out to Greene for comment.
The Democrats’ reaction was a reflection of the controversy swirling around Greene’s own bombastic behavior since arriving on Capitol Hill, which at times has played out on the House floor. During President Biden’s State of the Union address in February, the Georgia Republican yelled “liar” as the President delivered remarks on Social Security and Medicare.
And last month, Greene was silenced during a Homeland Security Committee hearing after she accused Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of being a liar.
Following the laughter, Greene said “the House will be in order” and recognized Scalise to continue talking on the floor.
“While some in this town might be interested in theatrics, House Republicans took action,” Scalise said, prompting groans in the chamber. “We passed a bill to address the problem, it’s time for my friends on the other side to start doing their job, call the Senate back in to take up the bill.”
“If they don’t like it they can amend it, that is part of the legislative process. Let’s get our jobs done; we’ve done ours, they need to do theirs,” he added.
Scalise took to the House floor Wednesday to inform lawmakers that they can leave Washington for Memorial Day weekend but should be prepared to return to the Capitol with 24-hours notice to vote on a debt limit ceiling as negotiations over raising the borrowing limit drag on.
For more than a week, Republican lawmakers and White House negotiators have been engaging in talks to come to an agreement. Pressure, however, has mounted in recent days as the calendar inches closer to June 1 — the day that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned the U.S. could default by.
After announcing the scheduling plans, House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) spoke on the House floor to criticize the GOP bill and celebrate that all members of the Democratic caucus signed on to a discharge petition, which liberal lawmakers are hoping can be used to force a vote on legislation to increase the borrowing limit.
Democrats erupted in applause.
While all 213 Democrats have signed onto the petition, the caucus needs five Republicans to join their effort to reach the threshold of a majority of the chamber, which is needed to force a vote through the discharge petition. That, however, is an unlikely scenario as Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has called on GOP lawmakers to stand behind him in negotiations.
Clark, however, called on Republicans to join the Democratic effort.
“It only takes five patriots to join us in the fight for the American people. Join us, sign the petition, stay here and fight for American families, fight for their American security,” she added.

Justices Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch used a range of hypotheticals — pointedly including recognizable conduct by liberals — to demonstrate the supposed breadth of the obstruction statute, and to downplay an argument deployed by the government: the insurrection was a singular moment in American history that does not invite easy comparisons. “What happened on January 6 was very, very serious, and I’m not equating this with that,” Alito said, before citing Monday’s pro-Gaza protest on the Golden Gate bridge and stringing together a hypothetical where a similar protest blocks members of Congress from getting to a vote. “Would pulling a fire alarm before a vote qualify for 20 years in federal prison?” Gorsuch asked incredulously, clearly alluding to Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY).
Right-Wing Justices Haggle Over Law Used To Nab January 6 Rioters
These corrupt, deeply dishonest, right wing activists cosplaying as Justices sure do love their hypotheticals, don’t they.

Democrat Drops Senate Run to Challenge Cori Bush Over Her Support of Palestine
Instead of seeking to unseat far right Sen. Josh Hawley, the Democrat is zeroing in on a progressive in the House.
Tumblr media

Excerpt from Sharon Zhang/Truthout [cc]
Missouri Democrat [Wesley Bell] announced this week that he is giving up a months-long run to unseat outspoken far right Republican Sen. Josh Hawley — in order to stage a primary challenge to progressive Democrat Rep. Cori Bush, citing her support of Palestinians amid Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
In the Senate race, Bell had the opportunity to oust one of the most outspoken right-wing members of the chamber. Hawley is perhaps most well known for his salute to Donald Trump militants on the January 6, 2021, attempted coup, and Democrats have cited him as a key figure in inciting the militants that day.
Instead, Bell is zeroing in on primarying one of the most consistently progressive and left-wing lawmakers in Congress — one who has garnered praise for being one of only about a dozen lawmakers advocating for Palestinians in the past weeks and years.
Bush isn’t the only progressive critic of Israel who’s facing a primary challenge next year. Representatives Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) and Summer Lee (D-Pennsylvania) are also facing challengers who have cited their support of Israel as a reason for the challenge, while another New York Democrat is citing Israel as a reason he may run against Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D).
These primary challenges will likely have strong support from AIPAC, a pro-Israel PAC that has spent millions on opposing progressive pro-Palestine candidates…
Bush and Ocasio-Cortez have spoken out against AIPAC this week.
“AIPAC endorsed scores of Jan 6th insurrectionists. They are no friend to American democracy,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on social media on Tuesday. “They are one of the more racist and bigoted PACs in Congress as well, who disproportionately target members of color. They are an extremist organization that destabilizes U.S. democracy.”
“Speak on it, sis. AIPAC’s dark money grift & anti-democracy propping up of insurrectionists are attempts to undermine the will of the people,” Bush wrote in a response. “They spread lies, distort truth, and spend millions of dollars targeting Black and brown elected officials working to end hate & injustice.”
aka Right-wing / MAGA / AIPAC / Democrat strategy to maintain power
Biden has already lost a great deal of support in the Muslim / Arab communities for his hugging support of Israel.

A heated debate erupted on Capitol Hill when Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a former middle school principal, yelled at his GOP colleagues Wednesday and repeatedly called them “cowards” for not supporting stricter gun measures in the wake of the Nashville school shooting.
The exchange between Bowman, D-N.Y., and Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., occurred just outside the House chamber and was widely circulated on social media after several journalists posted video of it.
Bowman, a former principal at Cornerstone Academy for Social Action in the Bronx, can be heard yelling: “They’re all cowards! They won’t do anything to save the lives of our children at all!”
He continued: “Pressure them, force them to respond to the question: Why the hell won’t you do anything to save America’s children? Let them explain that all the way up to Election Day on 2024.”
Several lawmakers walk by Bowman without engaging, before Massie stops in front of him and says there has never been a shooting at a school where teachers were allowed to carry guns.
“More guns leads to more death,” Bowman responds. “Look at the data. You’re not looking at any data.”
Massie, who in 2021 tweeted a holiday photo with family members holding guns and text asking Santa to “please bring ammo,” then asks Bowman whether he would co-sponsor legislation he introduced last year to repeal a federal ban on guns in school zones. Massie has pointed to data from a controversial gun researcher to argue that such bans are ineffective.
At one point in Wednesday's exchange, Massie can be heard telling Bowman to “calm down.”
“Calm down? Children are dying," Bowman responded. "Nine-year-old children. The solution is not arming teachers."
Six people, including three children, were killed at a school in Nashville, Tennessee, on Monday. Three 9-year-old students, a custodian, a substitute teacher and the head of school were killed.
Police said the suspect shot through the locked doors of The Covenant School and was later killed in a confrontation with officers.
Congress has not advanced any new gun bills since the shooting, and Republicans have largely opposed any Democratic-backed measures to address gun violence.
A spokesperson said in an email that Massie had “accepted the challenge” from Bowman and explained the data he has used to argue for a repeal of gun-free school zones.
"When confronted with the facts, Mr. Bowman tried to shout Rep. Massie down," the spokesperson said.
Bowman's office declined to comment. In a tweet posted after the exchange, Bowman posted the video and used an expletive to say Republicans will do nothing to address gun violence.
"We can't calm down," he said. "People are dying everyday while we wait."

→ And how are the Jews? Haverford College students held an on-campus event about how Jews are behind Covid in Palestine: “COVID in Times of Genocide: How Israel uses COVID as a Tool for Settler Colonialism in Palestine.” The University of Michigan had to end an honors convocation ceremony amid protests for the university being, I don’t know, Zionist? The president of the main pro-Palestine group on campus wrote: “Until my last breath, I will utter death to every single individual who supports the Zionist state. Death and more. Death and worse.”
And in a Berkeley City Council meeting about Holocaust Remembrance Day, protesters interrupted to chant “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and to call the council members “money suckers” and “Zio pigs.” One woman screamed at the council: “You are traitors to this country. You are spies for Israel.” Wow! That’s some spirited Anti-Zionism and Definitely Not Antisemitism right there!
In a surprise to no one reading this site, support for Israel’s war against Hamas is falling:
Tumblr media
New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman called the idea of Hamas raping Israelis “a lie.” And then in a great new blood libel from NPR, the taxpayer-funded media nonprofit celebrated the Jewish holiday of Purim, a story of a Jewish queen saving the people and getting the king to agree to let them defend themselves against would-be genociders. How did NPR celebrate? By connecting it to the modern war against Hamas—and guess what, NPR says it’s bad that the Jews survived in the Purim story and that Jews are fighting Hamas now.

MADINA TOURÉ and IRIE SENTNER at Politico:
NEW YORK — Speaker Mike Johnson said he will call Joe Biden and demand the president send the National Guard to Columbia University — an escalation after protesters constantly shouted him and other Republicans down during a visit to the campus Wednesday.
Johnson, flanked by GOP lawmakers from New York and elsewhere, repeated his calls for the university’s embattled president to step down. But protesters shouted “who are you people?” “Mike, you suck!” and chanted “free Palestine,” making it almost impossible for the gaggle of reporters and others to hear the speaker. “This is dangerous. This is not the First Amendment, this is not free expression,” Johnson said. He later added: “If this is not contained quickly and if these threats and intimidation are not stopped, there is an appropriate time for the National Guard.” Johnson directly faced the Gaza Solidarity Encampment that has thrown the Ivy League campus into turmoil over the past week — demonstrations that have drawn bipartisan anger over incidents of antisemitism. Johnson earlier in the day called Columbia President Minouche Shafik a “weak and inept leader” who can’t guarantee the safety of Jewish students during a radio interview.
While he’s the most senior elected official so far to push for Shafik’s resignation, numerous Republican lawmakers — including New York’s GOP delegation — and at least one Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), are also pushing for her ouster. “My message to the students inside the encampment is go back to class and stop the nonsense,” Johnson said. “Stop wasting your parents’ money.” Johnson’s comments Wednesday capped off a week of chaos at the school that started when Shafik and other university leadership testified before House lawmakers, followed by her calling in police to arrest around 100 pro-Palestinian demonstrators who had camped out on campus. The protests and arrests spawned similar demonstrations at NYU, Yale, MIT and beyond and have become the latest domestic flashpoint in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
“Columbia University is in a free fall,” House Education Committee Chair Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) said Wednesday, accusing Shafik of presenting false testimony during the hearing. “I have a message for President Shafik and a message for you all too: The inmates are running the asylum,” she added.
[...] Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) — who has accused Columbia of bowing to “right wing pressure” with its arrests of students — dubbed Johnson’s visit as another tactic in a conservative attack on educational institutions and an effort to silence “anti-war and pro-Palestinian sentiment.”
Yesterday, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was hellbent on making Kent State look like a picnic by demanding President Biden call in the National Guard to quell pro-Palestinian protests on campuses nationwide. Speaker Johnson got deservedly shut down by protesters.

The House Ethics Committee voted against opening an investigation into Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) on Wednesday for falsely pulling a fire alarm in a congressional office building in September.
Bowman, who previously worked as a middle school principal, pulled the fire alarm just as lawmakers were about to vote on a short-term government funding measure to avoid a government shutdown. The New York lawmaker faced six months jail time, but in a plea deal he agreed to pay a $1,000 fine and write an apology to Capitol Police. After three months of probation, the charge will be withdrawn.
