Summary:

Wayne is sick and they don't have the money for the treatment he needs. Eddie, desperate and spread thin between school, a part time job, and dealing, spots Steve outside of a gay club and opts for blackmail. Steve, who has heard about Wayne through Dustin... just sort of lets him.

I started writing this while Ao3 is down. Haven't quite finished it yet, but I've got 6.7k written so far, so I should be able to do daily posts for at least a while!

Quick note, if it helps anyone who might be hit too close to home by Wayne's serious but relatively brief health scare. First, he's going to be fine. I love Wayne, I wouldn't do that to him. Second, Dustin's mind goes straight to cancer when he hears that it's serious serious, but Wayne's illness is never specified. The only symptoms described are basically a cough and general weakness/fatigue.

Dustin is really upset one day after school, the day he tells Steve about his dad. 

Steve had never asked, alright? It was family shit, and that kind of thing was. . . . Well, not sacred, he can’t even think that and keep a straight face, but definitely private. There could’ve been any number of reasons why Mr. Henderson wasn’t around. 

Turns out it was cancer.

And . . . it’s not insensitive to wonder, right? Steve doesn't know if it’s an anniversary or if someone’s been giving him shit at school about not having a dad or something. So, after a few bumbling questions about why this is upsetting him now, an explanation comes tumbling out.

The leader or president or whatever of the nerd club Dustin joined at the start of the year had to cancel their game this week. “Eddie never cancels, Steve,” Dustin insists, eyes red from crying and voice gone all squeaky. “And we were giving him shit about it, we all were, even the upperclassmen guys, and he. . . he j-just broke, Steve. Said his uncle is r-really sick, bad sick, and I know what that means. They don’t have the money for treatment. He’s Eddie’s only family, and he’s probably going t-to. . . .”

Steve regrets dropping Robin off at her house first today. She might not know what to say either, but at least they’d be in this together. “Dust, that’s. . . . That’s awful.”

Turns out he doesn’t have to say anything else, because Dustin thumps against him and bawls his eyes out.

“It was awful, Robs,” Steve says, rubbing a hand over his eyes as he talks into the phone. “I haven’t seen him like that since after Starcourt, when we had to tell him about Hop.”

Robin’s wince is audible in her reply. “Yeah, that's. . . . That’s pretty bad.”

“Yeah.” He heaves a sigh, hoping it’ll get some of the constricted feeling out of his chest. It doesn’t.

“Steve? Are you okay?”

“I don’t know.” It’s just, he hates it. Hated it then and hates it now, because both times there’s no way for him to jump between Dustin and this thing. “Everything was starting to sort of feel okay again, and then suddenly there's Eddie ‘The Freak’ Munson and his uncle, who I’ve never even seen in my life—”

“It’s not about the Munsons, Steve,” Robin says gently. “You and Dustin have that ‘you die I die’ thing. He’s like your kid brother who annoys the shit out of you, but you love him to death anyway. And right now he’s sad but you can’t do anything to help.”

Lifting his face from his hand, Steve looks around the room. He’s on the big comfortable couch in his big fucking house with too many rooms, all empty except for this one. His parents are never home, always away on business trips that got way more frequent after Barbara Holland disappeared from a party he’d hosted. They send money—not an allowance, not since he didn’t get into any of the colleges he’d applied to. But the utility bills are always paid up, and a gardener still comes around to do lawn maintenance every other week.

He wonders how the cost of maintaining a house they don’t live in compares to the cost of whatever kind of treatment Munson’s uncle needs.

Doesn’t let himself wonder if it would make a difference, but he knows that treatments don’t always work. It hadn’t, apparently, for Dustin’s dad.

“Yeah,” Steve agrees heavily. “I know.”

The nice thing about being done with high school and working weekends at a shitty retail job is, Steve can do whatever he wants on some weekdays. As long as he doesn’t have a shift that starts before noon the next day, anyway. Which he doesn’t.

So, a few days after Dustin’s revelations, Steve drives up to the nearest outskirts of Indy. Eventually he ends up in one of those clubs that he and Robin have been researching how to find.

He tells himself that he’s scoping it out before he brings her, but he wants to get lost for a while. Empty his head out of things he can’t do a damn thing about—the Upside Down, the monsters, the Russians, the Munsons, the memories of Dustin crying and, just for funsies, of Nancy calling him bullshit. Because that’s always somewhere in the mix, these days.

Fill it back up with music and movement. Not with drinks, because he still has to get himself back to Hawkins in one piece.

He goes and he dances and he sweats. Sometimes guys dance with him, and Steve goes with it. Who cares? No one knows him here, it doesn’t mean anything.

Turns out, it does mean something after all. 

When Steve finally stumbles his way out of the club, he finds none other than Eddie Munson sitting on the hood of the Beemer he’s been buying off of his parents in installments. (Their idea. It’s a ‘pay for it or lose it’ kind of deal.) 

The buzzing under his sweat-tacky skin—satisfaction at successfully getting out of his head—fizzles out. He keeps walking and stops when he draws even with the car. 

Eddie Munson, looking tired and prickling with restless energy, and exhales a cloud of smoke and vapor into the chilly air. “Hey, man. What’s a nice boy like you doing in a place like this?”

hello some of the language in that post abt house resolution 888 rang some bells so i looked up the language of the actual resolution (https://www.congress.gov/118/bills/hres888/BILLS-118hres888ih.pdf) and like.........it's not necessarily the greatest thing in the world but it absolutely does not go to the level indicated by that post. the closest thing is the resolution that "denying israel's right to exist is A FORM OF antisemitism," and like....we can debate the legitimacy of that statement but that's not the same thing, and the other "claims" are all neutral or not things that happened. it doesn't actually say anything about rejecting calls for palestinian sovereignty, and the resistance it condemns is hamas.

I reblogged another post a bit after that which actually showed (some or all?) of the text of the bill and ... yeah comparing the two posts several of the claims in that first one seem to have come out of nowhere, even having stuff in quotations like it was cited but that text straight up does not exist in the bill.

I'm not thrilled about some of the implications of the bill or the fact that it passed 412 to 1, but I definitely believe very strongly that misinformation is not helpful to this conversation.

German upper house approves bill easing citizenship rules

German lawmakers have passed a bill that makes the process of obtaining citizenship easier, and moved to simplify repatriations.

The naturalisation reform, approved by the upper house of parliament on Friday, allows people to become German citizens while keeping their original citizenship.

People will be able to apply for citizenship after living in Germany for five years rather than eight years. Children of parents from abroad will also be granted German citizenship at birth if one parent has been legally residing in Germany for five years rather than eight.

If applicants demonstrate “special integration achievements” through particularly good performance at school or work or civic engagement, they may be able to be naturalised after only three years.

One important aspect of the new law is that people who obtain their German citizenship will not have to give up the citizenship of their native country, previously only possible for residents from other EU countries in Germany.

This will allow tens of thousands of German-born Turks to become voters.

Likewise, Germans who wish to become citizens of another country will no longer need special authorisation from German authorities.

The bill was put forward by centre-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s socially liberal coalition. The main centre-right opposition bloc had criticised the project, and argued it would cheapen German citizenship.

The bill was approved by Germany’s lower house two weeks ago. At the time, Scholz hailed the legislation and said it was for those who had lived and worked in Germany for “decades”.

“With the new citizenship law, we are saying to all those who have often lived and worked in Germany for decades, who abide by our laws, who are at home here: You belong to Germany,” Scholz said.

Filiz Polat, a Green Party migration expert, welcomed the prospect of dual citizenship and slammed parties opposing the law as failing to understand the “modern immigration society that has long existed in Germany”.

Al Jazeera’s Dominic Kane, reporting from Berlin, said there were “speeches in favour and there were speeches against” the bill in the state’s house of parliament.

“But in the end, the house decided not to vote in favour, but also, not to vote against,” Kane said. This means that the law goes through because of Germany’s constitution.

“The elected house of parliament had already voted in favour of it,” he explained.

The legislation still has to be approved by Germany’s upper chamber of parliament, and by the president as a formality, before it becomes law.

It will come into effect by mid-May at the earliest, Kane said.

Hundreds of thousands of people are already in the system, meaning there will likely be a massive backlog before new applications are processed, our correspondent added.

JFK Assassination Docs Held Up

LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), Oct. 19, 2022.--Demanding under the 1992 JFK Records Act that all remaining documents of the Nov. 22, 1963 JFK assassination be released, the largest online directory of JFK assassination sued the Biden administration to win their release.  Biden delayed the release Oct. 27, 2021 citing the Covid-19 global pandemic, giving the National Archives more time to disseminate the information.  Filed today by the Mary Ferrell Foundation—the largest open archive of JFK assassination docs—the nonprofit sued to have the remaining 15,000 docs released to the public.  President Bill Clinton signed the 1992 JFK Records Collection Act to authorize the release of any-and-all documents held by the government associated with the 1963 JFK assassination.  “It’s high time that the government got its act together and obeyed the spirit and the letter of law,” said Jefferson Morley, Vice President of the Mary Ferrell Foundation.

Morley said it’s the government’s responsibility to stop the delay and release at the earliest possible time of the remaining 15,000 JFK assassination-related docs.  “This is about our history and our right to know it,” Morley said, urging the Biden administration to act with urgency to get out the remaining docs.  “It was a momentous crime, a crime against American democracy.  And the American people have the right to know,” said Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the son of the brother of the 35th president.  “The law requires the records to be released. It’s bizarre.  It’s been almost 60 years since my uncle’s death.  What are they hiding,” asked RFK Jr.  Countless numbers of books, articles and manuscripts have been written over the last 60 years speculating about the events the preceded-and-followed JFK’s assassination.  No one knew why the U.S. government covered-up its findings on the assassination.

JFK assassination experts don’t think the 15,000 of redacted documents will answer the question of who’s responsible for JFK’s Nov. 22, 1963 assassination. It took the government nearly three years after the assassination to release Sept. 24, 1964 the 888-page Warren Report that concluded that assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman, without any “evidence” of conspiracy.  Few people believed the conclusions of the Warren Report, breeding wild speculation over the last 60 years.  Former CIA Agent Rolf Mowatt-Larssen, who’s lectured at Harvard on the assassination, doesn’t believe his former employer, the CIA, has come clean with the American public.  Mowatt-Larssen believes the CIA had contact with Oswald in the months, weeks and days before the assassination.    “What I think happened, in a nutshell, is that Oswald was recruited into a rogue CIA plot,” Mowatt-Larssen said.

With all the docs kept from the public, it’s obvious that the government had a vested interest in covering up its involvement in JFK’s assassination.  “This group of three, four or five rogues decided their motive [was] to get rid of Kennedy after the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis because they through it was their patriotic duty given the threat the country was under at the time and their views, which would be more hard-line or more radically anti-communist and very extreme politically,” Mowatt-Larssen said.  While still speculation, it offered one former CIA-agentt’s view of possible motives to get rid of Kennedy.  CIIA officials said they would respond by Dec. 15 the date given by Biden to release any-and-all remaining JFK assassination documents.  Lawsuit filed today in San Francisco federal court said the government has not complied with the 1992 JFK Record’s Act.

Representing the Mary Ferrell Foundation, lawyer Bill Simpich said the Biden White House delayed the release due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  “This case is all about delay.  The agencies always have new and better excuses,” Simpich said, forcing the government to put-up-or-shut-up regarding the last 15,000 documents.  Simpich’s lawsuit claims the government illegally redacted at least 11 records—a memo from the 1961 reorganizing of the CIA following the failed Bay of Pigs operation.  Files on three CIA operatives that concocted a 1962 false flag operation to take place on U.S. soil, records related to assassination plots on Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, and a JFK documents taken by Howard Hunt, one of the Watergate burglars.  Simich’s lawsuit asked the National Archives to find other JFK-relevant documents but not part of the 15,000 documents scheduled for release.

Mary Ferrell Organization wants to get to the bottom of the JFK assassination with the release of all JFK collection documents but anything else the National Archives possesses but has not released to the public.  Simpich claims that one of the docs involves George Joannides, the former CIA chief in Miami, Florida.  Joannides served in New Orleans exile group that had several contacts in 1963 with Lee Harvey Oswald.  Putting the dots together on the JFK assassination hasn’t been easy with so many documents withheld or redacted.  Simpich hopes any more docs obtained under the current suit should help piece together what’s become a monstrous jigsaw puzzle on JFK’s assassination.  Whatever comes out from the Mary Ferrell lawsuit, it’s doubtful it will produce a smoking gun, something not already known about Nov. 22, 1963.  Yet every doc released helps researchers connect-the-dots.
