honestly i love how both you guys and mafia collectively changed my perspective on forgiving characters, if that makes any sense. like, if i just bring up sam i hope that explains everything. because i've wondered all this time, do you reckon he actually meant what he said when he offered tommy a way out while he was bleeding on the floor in the gallery. past me would've said yes but now, once you start finally considering all the other things that have happened up until this point, of course sam didn't mean what he said, salieri wouldn't have stopped going after him and leaving sam alive would've only made things worse for him in the long run. it's heartbreaking honestly but it's what the life does to you, which is such a big and important part of the theme of the story along with friendship and family. honestly the story of mafia one is so great though, that's what helps the players decision too on who to forgive and believe because they aren't just some one dimensional nobody's, they feel alive and you care about them for it. like how boring would it be if sam did mean it, that just throws all his character out of the window completely, and it throws all of the complexities of being in the mafia out there too. everything going right is just too good to be true.

like i think about comparing him to henny, and then comparing tommy and vito. vito could forgive henry because one, it's vito, but two they just love each other and most if not all of their wrong doings is because of their repression and lack of knowing how to love. hen wasn't aware of where he could start fixing things, but he knew despite how shitty he did things, even when he didn't mean it, that his loyalty lay with his friends and not his boss. vito would keep them together forever because vito just doesn't know how to let go. whereas with tommy and sam there was never that closeness with each other, and sam is a loyal man, but his loyalty doesn't lie with his friendships it lies with his boss. vito and henry have a connection and no matter what they would forgive each other, it just sounds so wrong to say henry betrayed his best friends and not just because they're his best friends, but because it sounds so, wrong for him. any best friend can be betrayed and that's exactly what sam did because of his own motives. this life is so ruthless, and depending on who you are it's going to affect you more or less than others.

like vito, joe and henry, it's a tragic love story. whereas tommy, paulie and sam, it's just a tragedy. love can be mended but good luck fixing a downright tragedy.

i'm sorry but i cannot stop thinking about it for reallll imagine you're richer than god and never had to face consequences for anything and you have so much money you don't even know what to do with it so you toss a quarter million at the stupidest tourism option on earth. and you see that the paper you have to sign tells you you could die and you look at the flimsy metal tube you're going to be plummeting into the ocean in and it doesn't even phase you because bad things don't happen to people like you. imagine some hours into the journey you realise something is wrong. maybe not you but somehow the knowledge that there was a fuckup becomes known to the 5 of you trapped in there. and you know you can't get out from the inside and you know you have no food and no bathroom and not even the room to ever stand up again. when does the realisation that your wealth cannot protect you from your inevitable mortality set in. how does someone like that reconcile with both death and the fact that it's 100% their own doing? can someone like this even come to terms with that or will they be fighting to find someone to blame until the last second? when does it reach you that all 5 of you are going to die one by one and there's nothing you can do? does the fact that 5 of you have enough air until thursday but one of you could have enough air until at least next week ever cross anyone's mind.
