Went to go see Godzilla Minus One with a friend today!!! It was a very good film and while yeah Godzilla’s kaiju design and effects where cool what really made it stand out to me was the story of how the Japanese people where impacted an dealt with the trauma of war. These themes that where at the genesis of the character where more present here than in any other Godzilla movie I’ve seen perhaps even more so than the first. I really liked how it had the conceit in the final battle where all these people who’s lives where destroyed by the war where able to defeat the manifestation of their trauma (Godzilla) with no casualties a contrast thematically to how the Fascist government of Japan viewed them during wartime as disposable pawns to achieve imperialist aims whether that be through the suicidal tactics in its military or the lack of attention given to domestic supply lines (and also how the occupational government which replayed many of the same leadership left them high and try to deal with Godzilla on their own) but instead now that these people are fighting for love for their families and for their country as a community of its citizens rather than for empire they have the will not to die but rather to live and see another day with the ones they want to protect. A story of humanity persevering over the horrors our systems of oppression create.
