Black Water Arc: War of The Water Tyrants.
“Wind’s ontology refuses to take separateness as an inherent feature of the world. […] And this is, in part, wind’s value—it has an existential precondition that appears only in the context of contact. Wind is touching, mutual, moving.”
 — Cymene Howe, Ecologics
 It seems overly contradictory to start a piece about water tyrants with a quote about the wind, doesn’t it? In actuality, readers of the novel would find this comparison immensely appropriate. This is because although black water arc is about the head-to-head battle between Shi Wudu and Hexuan; the center point, the cause and the final effect of this whole arc is Shi Qingxuan. 
 “Existential Precondition” or fate. It is ironic that wind is described as such because that is essentially Shi Qingxuan’s inherent problem and “Refuses to take separateness” was Shi Qingxuan’s ultimate solution. 
Short Summary:
The infant Shi Qingxuan has a curse placed upon them. The curse prophesied a life full of unfathomable hardships for Shi Qingxuan and that is now their fate. Their brother, Shi Wudu, who is extremely protective of his sibling, is bent on saving Shi Qingxuan from this curse. Shi Wudu being naturally gifted eventually ascends as a god, he uses his position in the heavenly realm to then help his younger brother ascend to godhood as well. It is eventually revealed that Shi Wudu secretly changed his sibling’s cursed fate with another person of similar name and better fortune. 
The person in question is Hexuan. Hexuan was fated to live a prosperous life and ascend as a god but instead lives with tragedy latched onto him. He goes through poverty, false accusations, abuse and all of his loved ones die under heartbreaking circumstances. Hexuan eventually dies and returns as a vengeful ghost bent on punishing the one that had wronged him. Hexuan wants justice and since the gods refuse to pass judgement, he decides to come to a verdict on his own. In short, that is what black water arc is about: Judgement. In a grey situation, where exactly do we place the blame?
 On Morality:
Shi wudu verses Hexuan, ‘The war of the water tyrants’ dilemma, is one of the most mind-blowingly well thought out cases of grey morality in literature. It is no secret that the reductiveness of morals into “good” and “evil” categories is one of mxtx's main themes often explored heavily in her previous works. The author rejects the absolute extremes in character viewpoints, both in her protagonists and antagonists and applies the concept in varying thoughts including race and politics. 
The difference in this arc however, is the projection of the audience’s principles into each character. That is, between Hexuan and Shi wudu, she never specifies who the antagonist is. It is left to the readers to explore, reflect and come to an understanding on what exactly it is like to venture into the grey zone. Neither of the two were selfishly driven, none of their initial intentions stemmed from hatred. It was familial love that drove them to hurt one another, familial love that blindsided them. In their quest to protect and to avenge their family, innocent family members lost their lives or were hurt; on both their parts. This is where the definitions of victims and perpetrators get skewed. It is so skewed in fact, that the only valid testimony left is the reader's sentiments for the characters and their own self-principles. 
 From Shi wudu’s “Everything I have today, I fought for myself... I will change fate that I do not possess. My fate is up to me and not the heavens” is the will to fight predestination. Verses, Hexuan’s “What right did he have to suck another’s blood, trample another’s bones to reach the skies, and still maintain a peace of mind. Enjoying all such luxuries without any sense of burden?” the victim of the change in predestination. Two strong, commendable principles, founded by righteousness but blinded by arrogance and hatred. Later, to maintain a peace of mind, Hexuan tramples on Shi Qingxuan and in the process of fighting for oneself, Shi Wudu ultimately changes Shi Qingxuan’s fate for the worse. 
We even witness the Shi Wudu’s blindness take a terrible turn at the very end when he attempts to strangle his own sibling that he fought to protect all this time. His belief that Shi Qingxuan will not be safe without him, his lack of trust in his own brother, is part of his arrogance. 
In return, we see Hexuan’s blind hatred falter for a moment when he keeps giving Shi Qingxuan chances for safety. At the finish line, we see both the water tyrant’s own morals and goals swap. This change in attitude towards Shi Qingxuan’s future is another outstanding ploy by mxtx because expectation of a good outcome is the core of morality. In the end, the readers simply wish for a good ending for Shi Qingxuan and when Shi Wudu decides he is going to die together with his sibling, it confuses the audience. There is a shock factor added, you perceive Shi Wudu as the protector and he pulls the safety rug from under your feet. Instant shock and confusion violating the purity of the absolute good, so the reader’s immediate reaction is to look for safety in the not-absolute evil i.e. Hexuan. However, when Hexuan does not provide that complete comfort at the end, only slightly appeasing everyone, it stings. Reinforcing that cognitive blend of mixed morality into reader’s beliefs, further skewing the curve. 
 It is this kind of writing that creates a split in the fandom, not in a bad way, but more in terms of sparking a conversation about where people’s individual morality lies. Each character has their past, their reasons, their flaws and goodness and it gives the audience something to root for. In addition, the rooting is not a hundred percent good versus bad, because each character’s choices are equally flawed. The fandom selects a side but with one foot still lingering on the other territory. Siding with Hexuan but understanding the reasoning behind Shi Wudu’s actions or siding with Shi Wudu but sympathizing with Hexuan’s pain and loss. The uneven split is how you know the characterization was not mediocre.
In regards to characterizations, Shi wudu and Hexuan are too similar. Their personalities, personas, auras; the proud, stubborn, intelligent water tyrants. We speak of these likenesses because Shi Qingxuan lives through this battle and will never be able to unsee the similarities. Hexuan remains, a walking reminder of Shi Wudu. This feels deliberately done as the final stab to the readers, so that Shi Qingxuan and Hexuan’s relationship remains unmendable. 
 Pure Point of Views, Shi Qingxuan and Xielian: 
Wind is invisible, its apprehension comes from its exposure to objects or in this case other people. Shi Qingxuan is air, pure, lively and touching, forming a comforting contact with everyone they meet. The kind of character that brings about a reader’s protective instinct, in a sense, if anything were to happen to them it will infuriate and break the audience. A classic plot device to draw emotions from the readers. Why must this innocent child suffer for the sins of their brother? But, mxtx urges us to rethink this by wondering the same for Hexuan’s family. They were innocent too, why did they have to die on this path? Why is Shi Qingxuan’s innocence valid and not theirs? The audience feels for Shi Qingxuan because we have become familiarised with them. Shi Qingxuan has now made that connection with the readers, the wind has touched their hearts versus only receiving glimpses of what was Hexuan’s previous family. The effect is lacking that familial impact, that bond. Classic writing schemes, beautiful.
At the end of the clashing of the waves, the person left with the permanent scars was the blameless Shi Qingxuan. Their life was molded and directed into this final point without their control, as if caught in a sea storm. The one that paid for this feud was ultimately Shi Qingxuan, the person neither of the other two wanted to hurt.
 Another classic writing device I want to finally explore and praise is the use of the narrator to throw the audience off the culprit’s scent. The mystery of Black Water Arc was quite simple actually, mxtx layed out all the clues and hints for the audience out in the open. Like Xielian himself states later, the simplest answer was always visible, he was just overthinking things. And if Xielian, the semi-narrator, overthinks then the audience will overthink. Xielian, an intelligent and the fundamentally good person, exudes a trusting aura. The audience cannot help but trust his judgement and perception of things, it is a credibility built from our experience with his mystery solving abilities in the previous arcs. 
The reason why the black water reveal was so impactful and shocking was because of Xielian. The semi narrator continuously made excuses for MingYi, his subconscious trusted him, even if he had his suspicions. He didn’t enforce them strongly enough, leaving the audience to believe Xielian was merely exploring a wrong option for the sake of eliminating possible culprits. The audience was not viewing MingYi as a culprit, rather they were waiting for Xielian to come to the inevitable conclusion of his innocence. An item to quickly cross off the checklist so that they could finally pursue the “real” culprit.
MingYi couldn’t use the Earth Master Shovel? Xielian makes the excuse for him before the audience can even dive deeper on that thought. HuaCheng draws suspicion back to MingYi and Xielian immediately doubts his most trusted confidant’s assumptions. Xielian trusts MingYi, so we trust MingYi against our better judgement. When the narrator has left no room for mistrust, how can the audience hold their stance? 
The proficient push and pull charade played out by Hexuan and Huacheng is another impactful factor that took part in diverting Xielian’s mistrust. The nefarious roles they played policing and suspecting each other, from Hexuan’s “don’t you have spies in the heavens?” to Huacheng’s lie detecting dice game. The solid plan of the two suspicious individuals doing the dirty work for Xielian, did not allow Xielian to mold his thoughts in his own way. He was led astray whilst the other two worked together to draw trust onto each other. So, the audience did not have room for doubt either. 
In addition to all of that, the most fundamental foundation to Xielian’s trust for MingYi was that fact that he was the one who saved him from Huacheng in the first place. Simply because of the ghost city arc, we already place Huacheng and Hexuan on opposing sides rather than assuming they were accomplices. Furthermore, because of Xielian’s trust in Huacheng’s intellect and his belief of Huacheng’s prejudice against MingYi; he would constantly monitor Huacheng’s reaction to his own deductions. Unfortunately, Huacheng was a terrible basis point and by the time Xielian realizes it, it is too late. An ingenious tactic. 
The author led us off track in such a brilliant manner, I had to sing praises at the end of this piece. The way our mind perceives people or situations, is the essence of our moral compass. The mind is subjective, so subjectivity in judgement is ever present, ever grey.
Notes:
This unforgettable and excruciatingly tragic arc is an important turning point in the book and we are all aware that it does not need a special summary. However, I wanted to start with a bit of a reintroduction, just to stay true to the essay tradition. Is this an essay? A think-piece? An analysis? I would not dare shame any of those academic classifications by claiming to be writing as such. 
I hope this was enjoyable to read.

Description:  No one told them that there was going to be a kiss scene involved...
“What are you smiling about, bastard?” Shizuo Heiwajima growled, trying to put as much hatred into his glare as possible. After all, if Izaya was smiling, then that could mean nothing good for him. The best he could hope for was that he could somehow manage to intimidate the bastard into reconsidering whatever it was he was plotting in that head of his. But that would be the day pigs flew. He could try to strangle Izaya with a metal pipe, and the bastard still wouldn’t be frightened of him. He was too cheeky and brave for his own good. Shizuo was glaring goddamn daggers into him, but the man’s face remained practically serene as he spun around and hummed, the long pink and white kimono he had draped on flowing around him with an elegant grace.
“I just think we finally got put into very fitting and appropriate roles for once. I, a rich, prominent noble person, and you, a lowly servant-” Izaya’s sentence ended with a yelp as he dodged the water bottle Shizuo chucked at him, the bottle exploding everywhere, unfortunately nowhere near the louse.
Shizuo gritted his teeth in annoyance. What exactly was getting on his nerves, he wasn’t sure. Was he irritated because Izaya was being a perpetual asshole like always? But he should be used to it by now. Was he mad at himself for allowing Izaya’s quips to get under his skin in the first place? Shizuo had always had a ridiculously short fuse and bad anger issues. It didn’t take much for his temper to flare, and that flaw of his had almost caused him to lose roles before, seeing as some directors or actors felt afraid to work with him. He would like to point out if they didn’t want him blowing up half the time, they should try to avoid productions that involved Izaya, but whatever.
Maybe it was even something as base as the fact that no matter what he threw, Izaya managed to always have the evasiveness of a god and dodge it. It was a constant frustration, when all he wanted was to see the bastard get his just desserts for once.
Maybe it was a combination of all three.
Even though he didn’t get the satisfaction of seeing the water bottle hit, he took consolation at the filthy look Izaya threw his way, his strange wine-red eyes glimmering with hatred.
“Fuck you, Shizu-chan,” Izaya hissed. Shizuo felt his eye twitch at the nickname. Fuck did he hate the little bastard.
Shizuo was pretty sure he had some kind of blessing-curse rombo-combo going on right now. He was somewhat blessed, because he’d actually been managing to land a steady stream of roles, especially for a newer actor such as himself, and his status was taking off faster than he expected it to. Granted, most of his roles so far had been pretty small - just some parts in a couple of commercials and a few background roles in some TV shows and movies - but he had actually managed to land a few good spots.
He had gotten a very solid voice acting role for the main character of a popular anime, got to act as a main side character in a TV show for two seasons, and had even played the main antagonist in a monster movie that was getting quite the cult following.
He had been getting more and more fan letters, more and more interviews, and his name was being reached to a wider audience.
Pretty good, right?
However, there was a downside to it all. The curse of it being that almost ninety percent of the productions involved him working with Izaya Orihara. Izaya Orihara and him probably should get along. They were from very similar circumstances. They were both relatively young actors who were trying to make it in the industry. They had both been willing to pursue acting, despite knowing the risks such a life involved.
However, Izaya was an absolute asshole. He was always taunting, always sniping, always verbally jabbing at him. The pest even had a tendency to play pranks every now and then. And what Shizuo didn’t understand was why it was only him? Of course, he’d seen Izaya be mean to others, but he’d also seen a humble side of the flea. One who was professional and polite. Why couldn’t he get that kind of side of him? Even if it was just another act that the flea was pulling off. Was it because he had accidentally decked him and nearly broke his nose during a fake fight scene during one of their television shoots? Because that had been an accident .
Well, whatever the reason, it seemed Izaya had a personal vendetta against him and was determined to annoy him in anyway possible. One of his newer methods, Shizuo had been noticing was nicknaming him stuff. Protozoan had been the first, which, okay… was just a fancy way of saying the word idiot. He supposed as far as insults went though, it was generic though. But then, the flea had began throwing the word ‘monster’ around, probably to hint at the time Shizuo had, during the movie where he played the antagonist, “transformed” into a monster and had to wear a rubber suit, which Izaya, of course had found amusing.
Then, in one of the episodes of the TV show, there had been a miscommunication error, and for a good segment of the episode in question, a character thought Shizuo was a woman, who called herself ‘Shizu-chan.’ Ever since that episode had hit the airwaves, Izaya had been using the nickname to death.
He had considered getting the directors, but he knew that would be fruitless. Izaya had a way with words. Shizuo didn’t know how the flea did it, but he could get almost everyone wrapped around his finger in an instant. He would be able to convince the directors that it was simple misunderstanding or joke and sometimes, even pose it in a way that made Shizuo look like the bad guy.
So, he supposed if he wanted to be out of here faster, he should just do his lines as well as he could so he could get away from Izaya faster.
Also to get out of this tuxedo faster as well. It was making him feel unbearably hot.
So, turning away, he went to go some distance away from the flea. He had to remember… he was in a movie. A really big budget movie. The boost in his career this would give him would make it well worth having to deal with Shizuo.
He read over the lines of his script. His part was a bit harder. His character was a servant who’d been transferred from England to Japan, so he had to speak some lines with a bit of an accent and sprinkle in some broken Japanese every now and then, in order to try and make it authentic. It would lead help lead to the character Izaya was playing, Sakuraya, to feel the need to tutor the butler character, which would then lead to their eventual falling in love.
Shizuo grimaced. Not at the story itself. The story and the lines were fine. But the idea of having any romantic involvement with Izaya made him miserable just thinking about it.
But at least the directors had wanted their relationship to be “subtle” and “somewhat hidden” as to help fit the time period. So, the most they would be doing was handholding and maybe a hug.
And Shizuo supposed he could resist breaking Izaya’s hand enough to do a shoot.
All of a sudden, the director was calling for them to get into their positions. Shizuo took a breath.
Here went nothing. -------------------
Shizuo hated Izaya, but he had to admit, he saw why Izaya kept getting hired back. The guy was a very good actor. In fact, Shizuo might even say he had more talent than Shizuo, at least with his acting range. Izaya could seemingly put on any face he needed, always seemed to put the right inflection to his words. He spoke very eloquently and his memorization skills of his lines was top notch.
Shizuo, on the other hand, was a little harder on these aspects. It took him a couple tries to say some lines right and some lines he just struggled to remember. He wondered if that was part of the reason Izaya hated him too, because he was the only reason they were somewhat slow in any production. Well, Shizuo found Izaya’s infuriating perfectness to be annoying as well, so there.
But once they got it all down, the scenes seemed to flow naturally. Once Shizuo got himself in the right headspace, it was almost hard for him to remember that the soft hands he was holding belonged to the bastard flea.
They said their lines, they did their scenes, and eventually… the day was over.
Izaya stood up and looked at his hands in disgust, “Gotta go wash my hands now. Shizu-chan’s filthy hands no doubt got germs all over them.”
“Oi! What do you mean, filthy, you bastard?” Shizuo hissed.
And just like that, the illusion was dead and they were enemies once more. --------------------- “WHAT?” Both Shizuo and Izaya exclaimed the next day when they looked at the now changed script.
“You cannot be serious,” Izaya said, looking at the director imploringly.
“Please,” Shizuo groaned, “I’d be willing to do anything so long as you don’t do this.”
However, the director had very little sympathy for their plight. “We’ve decided the one way to get people to actually talk about the movie is if you two kiss. It makes it more romantic anyway.”
Izaya opened his mouth, and the director cut him off, “Before you say anything about historical accuracy, Izaya, it’s historical fiction for a reason. And if you noticed, the kiss happens in private. It’s staying in. If you two are that adamant about not doing it, we can easily find new actors to replace both of you.”
Shizuo supposed it couldn’t be more straightforward than that.
Growling, they both walked away in disgust.
“Remind me to buy some mouthwash before we shoot,” Izaya said, rolling his eyes.
Shizuo bristled, “You know I am not exactly eager, either, you fucking bastard.”
Izaya gave him a smirk and said, “Oh please, this is the probably the best thing to ever have happened for you. As far as I know, I might even be Shizu-chan’s first kiss!” He sing-songed the last part, mockingly.
“You wish, you rotten flea!” Shizuo said, tossing the script at Izaya, who like always, managed to dart away right in time, giggling.
He refused to acknowledge the fact that unfortunately, what Izaya said was indeed the truth.
Oh well… he supposed he had no choice.
The things one was willing to do for one’s craft.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- Acting was a little harder that day, at least for Shizuo. Naturally, he got into the flow of things again, but he couldn’t help but be distracted in the back of his mind that his lips were going to have to touch Izaya’s. And what’s worse, the director wanted it to look authentic. It couldn’t just be a little peck or anything, it had to involve tongue and everything, because of course it did.
Eventually though, as they continued to do the scene, it became a bit easier to fall into the role. He and Izaya were sitting on their knees, and Izaya had placed a hand on his knee, the two of them staring into one another’s eyes. Once again, Shizuo had to give it to Izaya’s acting ability. There seemed to be an actual heat in the gaze, and it seemed to electrify the air around Shizuo.
The scene was coming up any second now. Izaya was the one who had to initiate it.
Suddenly, the hand on Shizuo’s knee lifted and delicate, soft fingers touched his cheek. Eyes half-lidded, Izaya whispered, “Shitsuo-san, may I try something with you?”
“Of course,” Shizuo replied, eyes going half-lidded himself. He tried to look calm and somewhat confused, even though he was antsy as hell.
He had expected Izaya to hesitate. He probably would’ve if he was in the flea’s situation. However, the slender man actually closed his eyes and pressed their lips together immediately, his hand winding into Shizuo’s hair in a way that felt way to good.
Shizuo had to admit, he was a bit surprised. He had expected Izaya to purposely make this miserable for him. Maybe eat something absolutely nasty so his breath reeked or something while they were kissing, but Izaya’s lips actually felt soft and his breath warm. Shizuo hoped the fact that he stiffened when Izaya kissed him translated to his character being surprised rather than he himself being nervous.
Now was the point where Shizuo’s character was supposed to protest.
Pushing Izaya off of him lightly, he grabbed Izaya’s hands and said, “Master Sakuraya, we… we can’t.”
Izaya breathily chuckled and said, “Of course we can Shitsuo, so long as we are clever and coy.”
Then once more, Izaya pressed his lips to Shizuo’s. And this was the part where they were supposed to get more intense with the kiss, Shitsuo eventually giving in to his desires, at least for a moment. Izaya reminded him of this by tracing the line of his lips with his tongue, which caused Shizuo to gasp involuntarily. The flea took advantage of this, his tongue goading Shizuo’s to work with him. The flea was letting out convincing little hums too.
He was too good at this.
Eventually, Shizuo went along with it. And it felt good. Izaya was a great kisser, despite all of his other flaws. Shizuo found himself actually getting lost somewhat in baser desires.
However, eventually Izaya pulled away and his character let out a giggle, “See, you seemed to enjoy that, Shitsuo-san.”
Now, this was where Shitsuo was supposed to exit the scene. Pushing Izaya away, this time more roughly, he wiped at his lips and said, “No Sakuraya, doing such illicit acts will get us in trouble eventually. I… I have to leave.”
He stood up to leave, hearing Izaya’s character call out, “Shitsuo, please-!”
But Shizuo’s character snapped the door closed.
“CUT!” he heard the director say, but Shizuo continued to walk on until he reached the bathroom. He looked at himself in the mirror. Had… he actually enjoyed kissing Izaya? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That night Shizuo was haunted by his dreams. Dreams of soft lips against his. The feeling of hands shifting through his hair. But there was a slight change to the context of the dreams. Instead of innocent hums, it was shameless hums he was swallowing. Instead of pushing Izaya away, his hands were slipping underneath Izaya’s kimono, feeling up the man’s pale skin, pinching a nipple and causing the other man to mewl in his mouth.
“Shizu-chan,” Izaya whined, “Please-”
Shizuo awoke with a groan. Shit… what the fuck… --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Working with Izaya was already a pain in the ass, with the flea being, well, the way he was.
But somehow, this felt even worse. Cause now, he felt awkward.
His dreams hadn’t ended there. They had continued well throughout the night. Every single time, Izaya was in a new position, saying new things, but the concept was basically the same. Shizuo felt himself burning with shame.
Sure, Izaya was attractive, and okay, he was a good kisser. But he was an asshole.
And he was his coworker. He had to remember this. That kiss had been nothing but acting. Nothing else.
But for the whole day, as they were doing their shoots, Shizuo found he couldn’t focus. He kept messing up the lines, he refused to make eye contact with Izaya half the time, and he couldn’t put any heart into his lines.
Eventually, the director, frustrated, decided that what they needed was a break. He gave generic advice to Shizuo, which made him feel embarrassed… but he had simply nodded and walked away to the set to get a drink from his water bottle, wondering if it was going to be like this for the whole rest of the movie shoot. Because if so, he was going to lose a very valuable acting role, cause he highly doubted this director would have the patience to deal with him.
All of a sudden, he felt something hit him in the back. Not too hard, but enough to catch him off-guard.
When he looked down, he saw a water bottle rolling innocently by his foot. When he looked at the direction it had been thrown from, he saw Izaya smirking, saying, “Revenge.”
When Shizuo didn’t laugh, Izaya said, “Oh fine, no sense of humor… anyway, I just came to ask what the hell was with you up there? You struggle sometimes, but never that badly. What’s got you so bothered?”
Shizuo swallowed as he looked at Izaya. He couldn’t believe he was about to say this.
“Can I kiss you again?”
Izaya actually blinked in surprise for a moment. Shizuo expected him to refuse or to be disgusted, but Izaya actually just smirked.
“What?” Shizuo barked gruffly, already bracing for Izaya to mock him.
However, he was pleasantly surprised when Izaya just said, “See… told you it would be the best thing to happen to you.”
Shizuo rolled his eyes and snapped, “Shut up and come over here, flea, before I regret it.”
“Happy to oblige,” Izaya said with a purr, before striding over and pressing their lips in a kiss.
It was as good as Shizuo remembered it.
He would’ve been happy to stay there for a while, but Izaya pulled away and said, “If you want continued kisses, you got to take me out to dinner first.”
Shizuo swallowed and said, “Deal.”
Izaya was an asshole… but maybe… just maybe… he could get this to work.
Shizuo had always been the hopeful sort.

Name: Malvas Temess
“Malvas” is a corruption of “Malphas” one of the 72 demons of the Ars Goetia, reflecting the nature of the last two trolls as tempting/guiding/advising figures to Parisa. Malphas specifically is in the form of a crow, and destroys men’s thoughts- a sly reference to Breath. “Temess” is a corruption of “Tempest” as in “Stormy, tumultuous, volatile”.
Malphas is also known to openly accept sacrifices, but then deceive and betray those who provide the sacrifices, which I think is fun for this ‘tricking people to do dumb shit for him’ thing.
Age: Roughly 7 Sweeps
Theme/Story: Malvas really doesn’t care what happens to you, as long as it’s interesting. Ideally he can film whatever unfortunate event befalls you and post it on the internet as well, boosting his fame as a video maker. Malvas thrives on getting other people to do the work for him, and he lives for the drama, which makes him a dangerous friend to have.
Ohhh gosh, I just realized he reminds me a little bit of the first antagonist from Psycho Pass. Not really as far as motivation goes, but there’s an adjacent outlook. So I might use just a little bit of Shogo Makishima in my visual design later.
Strife Specibus: Sniperkind
Malvus likes to stay far away from the action, and doesn’t like to take damage. He is a goldblood after all, and any damage he takes will last, unlike those highbloods right there. They can take a hit and be just fine.
Definitely makes sense for someone who likes to watch from a distance! It also gives him the excuse to choose a perch, which gets him Off The Ground, literally reinforcing his breath theme.

Vine/Do It For The Vine Modus! It’s pretty simple, he’s just got to take a 6 second video that involves the object in order to free it up for use. Vine Was a great way to put out a ton of clever quick videos to gather attention. He could do something neat with the objects. …Or he could just put the objects on his head and mock highbloods (especially the culling foster parents) like Vine Teens used to do with random objects used to represent their mothers.
Blood color: Gold
Malvas knows he’s a genius, and that’s the scary part. Like most goldbloods, he prides himself on his intelligence, but he hides it behind a sort of airhead, easy going personality. He plays the hypeman because he knows it’ll make him good money. It’s all in how he phrases it, it’s all in the editing. Like many of his caste, he has a tendency to be a neurotic when it comes to his videos, and refuses to publish the ones he puts effort into until they’re absolutely perfect.

Much like he’s subposting on a certain social media platform, Malvas starts all of his phrases off with hastags, which helps demarcate the flow of his thoughts when the enter key won’t. He draws out his words because it helps add to his “causal and breezy” facade.
God this is really good. 
Special Abilities (if any): Malvas’ proximity to highblood is fueled in part by his own disabilities. Inflicted with a psionic disease akin to voidrot from an early age, his eyes have started to lose pigment and his psionics have all but burnt out completely. Thanks to revolutionary culling technology, he’s mostly able to lead a full life, but it’s at the expense of his privacy.
Lusus: Speaking of privacy, much of Malvas’ life has been without it. As a culled lowblood, he’s been at the mercy of highblood ever since he was a youngin. He’s bounced from place to place, from Purple clownhouses to underwater, Violet palaces. Regarded as a curiosity, a burden, and worse, Malvas fled into hiding as soon as he was able. One of highblood friends keeps his life support systems in check. She’s handy like that.
Parisa’s doin’ at least a bit of good. I love thinking about the dynamic these two would have.
Interests: Gaining Lots of Money, Lowblood Culture, Social Media (Short videos especially), ?????
Video editing, obviously. And if he’s interested in gaining lots of money, he probably knows a lot about SEO. And he could be interested in Affective Science, since understanding the science behind anger/competitiveness/etc would be of great help to him in goading people.
Appearance: Partially due to trying to conform to everyone’s idea of a perfect lowblood, Malvas is something of a boring looking troll. Until you get a good look at his face. Instead of gaining color as he ages the way a normal troll would, his have steadily gotten darker and darker. Without the aid of the mechanical life support system regularly cleaning his blood of psionic residues, he’d be black eyed and blind a long time ago. Truly, it’s just a ticking clock now…
Most important to Malvas’ look is the backpack-like extension of his life support, which he shouldn’t take off for long periods of time. He tries to hide it beneath coats and such, but it’s not particularly effective.
Personality:  Malvas is detached and much too cunning for his own good. He hides a ruthless, all consuming anger beneath a facade of chill. Perhaps had his life not turned out the way it did it would not be such a pose. He has the potential to be the kind of zen friend that a lot of violent highbloods would need to keep them from blowing smoke, but instead he has internalized and become the very thing he hates.
There’s a kind of sadism, a spiteful hate that fills him, much like his murky blood fills his eyes with darkness. There’s nothing more pleasing than watching the people who mistreated him (that is to say, all of highblood society) destroy themselves and each other with just the slightest nudge. A little suggestion here and there is all it takes. This also leads him to be a bit full of himself, but it manifests in a smug aura as opposed to recklessness. He knows his physical limitations all too well, and feels that his mission is too important to risk dying. He’s on borrowed time, and they have all the time in the world.
This is Really good because he’s taking that classic breath leadership, that natural tendency for people to gravitate towards him and follow his lead, and instead of being like a good person to follow he’s shoving the lemmings off the cliff. That’s such a great way to play the breath route with him. Maybe you could also add a little element of him using disposable accounts to dredge up internet drama between other internet personalities. Big fights between various trollter Famous stans, passively creating the direction of aggression. (And it helps that this elevates Parisa a little bit, whether or not he would direct drama her way. Any publicity is good publicity).

Malvas is very much a Breath player: he’s easygoing to a fault, capricious, and well content to sit on the backlines and let things flow over him. Gemun is called The Unbridled for a reason- Malvas is the kind of troll who doesn’t let other people tie him down, even as he exploits them for his own monetary gain.
It’s often assumed that as a passive creation class, Sylphs are to be something of the most helpful classes. And much of the time, this is true. But Malvas is not your saving, guardian angel. Passive creation of Breath is the same as the Active Destruction of Bonds. Since his main clientele are highbloods, one could argue that he’s Destroying Blood, namely theirs, the highest and most prized.
Malvas is the “Do It For The Vine” hype man as an extension of his class. Wreck your car! Gamble away your savings! Risk your life! Ruin your public standing! By encouraging his “friends” to do these things, he is passively creating movement and freeing them of their shackles.
Nothing says “clean slate” quite like burned bridges.
LOL god I LOVE this for him. Because he is doing a little bit of that classic sylph meddling, but it’s in the most destructive way. Instead of trying to nudge people on the right path, he’s shoving them off the railway. Even as someone who does videos and stuff, he creates trends, which makes him a direction-based leader. He makes the path and the people follow. He can influence people to do all kinds of risky and wild and friendship-destroying shit, it’s just brilliant. 
Land: The Land of Stone and Statues
Malvas fears death viscerally upon landing on this massive land of dark stone, built into towers so high they block out the sun. His consorts have long since died out, but they seemed to have been great builders.
How they did it? It would seem to be an army of statues, bound to each site by some kind of advanced cable. But something’s gone wrong- the cables that were supposed to give them life have become ropes that strangle them. They will never move again without help. It’s up to Malvas to try and restore some freedom of movement.
Dream Planet: Derse
As a lowblood, Malvas is well aware of his position on Beforus as someone who’s not considered “able” to make it in the world. This kind of pity insults and infuriates him, so he’s spent his whole life emulating the ways of the highbloods, creating a easygoing, subservient persona to better fool them with. Watching them burn for the aesthetic is sweeter than any mind honey.

Horns/hair: I just wanted the horns to reflect the symbol, nice and simple. The hair is mildly based off Shogo’s mullet. 
Face: I wanted him to look relatively chill and calm, but also have that hint of tiredness and smugness. Thus the smirk that’s approaching a 3-mouth. 
Outfit: I wanted to keep things relatively simple, but wanted to give him some mild visual interest regardless. A white coat with a big but simple collar, with some deformation to show that there’s something hidden beneath it. You can see a peak of a backpack strap with some settings as well as a few small tubes filtering his murky blood. His pants and shoes are just ripped and edited from Cronus’.
