Wait in that art you reblogged it says "Toga, Sesshomaru’s Mother © Rumiko Takahashi"... I thought we never knew Sesshy's mom's name? Is it really Toga???

No the artist meant “Toga (picture on the left), Sesshomaru’s mother (picture on the right)”! 

Toga is the unofficial name of Inuyasha & Sesshomaru’s father. I say unofficial because apparently it was only mentioned in early promo material for the third Inuyasha movie but it’s never actually said in the movie. In the manga he’s just called by his title “Inu no Taisho”, which means “Dog General”.

Sesshomaru’s mom still doesn’t have a name! She’s called “Gobodo-sama” by Jaken, which means “Lady Mother”. A lot of people call her “Inukimi” and even I use that tag for her, but it’s just a fandom name 😅

Instinct just so happens to be one of my favorite works, that I am most proud of and also is very controversial. 

What in the hell inspired you to write this story?

I get this one a lot, like what in the hell man? Well, pretty much there is an oft used trope in our fandom of once a demon “smells” his mate he can’t resist the instinctual desire to mate them. I actually hate the mating tropes, but I wanted to play around with my bonding idea when it comes to other demons. If it’s instinctual, uncontrollable, then mister Cool himself would not be able to rise above his basic instinct either. 

So this is basically me showing how damning that mating instinct can be. 

But...more than one soul-mate?

This has been probably one of my most asked questions. I do not believe that there is only one soul-mate in this world, rather there can be multiple. In the first chapter Gobodo-sama makes it clear that she doesn’t want Natsuki anywhere near Sesshomaru.

Historically speaking though back in Feudal Japan era, having many wives was common-place. So it’s not out of the realm of historical accuracy for Sesshomaru to have more than one lover. 

Gobodo-sama isn’t on Rin’s side!

G-sama is on no one’s side. She represents that annoying in-law that loves their child to a fault, wants what is best for the family but doesn’t take into account what the adult-child of theirs thinks is best so meddles like crazy. She is neither good nor bad, rather resides in that very annoying grey area where she makes fun of her son, but can’t sympathize with Rin. 

You knew he was going to cheat?

Yep. I once was talking to the lovely @ktzia about one of the most heartbreaking scenes in this work. She said, “You knew that he was going to cheat and she would leave him?” That was the first scene I wrote. I got this idea in my head that Sesshomaru would fall into this trap and I wanted to play around with it. Not to mention I’ve got a thing for triangles, so what happens when two people who love each other so much, hurt each other?

I Hate Touma...

So do I...because at the end of the day, he is the one that manipulated all the events in Instinct, while making Sesshomaru and Rin both look bad. 

I Hate Natsuki and you don’t!

Oh I know. You know I’ve read two stories recently where I honestly am rubbed so the wrong way by the MC’s. In both cases it’s because you are supposed to be rubbed the wrong way. They are supposed to infuriate you. It’s the purpose of the character. Natsuki’s sole purpose in this story was to cause damage and then healing. She was too young and naive to know understand how she was being manipulated. 

Which is what makes her so fun to write. Just remember, not every character you create are you meant to like. Conflict drives a plot. You need those characters that cause conflict.

Hisato!

HAHA I love that Hisato in all my stories has garnered such a response. The interesting thing writing Sesshomaru-centric stories is that you have to rely on OC’s, either because he lives in the West, which he doesn’t in my stories, or because simply put, he is not really part of the Inu-gang. Therefore it’s necessary to create some new characters. I had an insane amount of fun developing him in Drabbles, Lost Memories and Instinct. He’s a compliment to Gobodo-sama and always seems more rational. 

Why the hell did you write something so controversial?

Because I can. Duh. Possibly also because my favorite authors also write controversy. Basically, if we all write the same stuff life gets boring and I like angst and drama. Hence why this has been nominated multiple times as Best Dark and Best Angst.
