It’s World Wetlands Day! Wetlands are the kidneys of the ecosystem and are important in filtering the water to keep wildlife and humans safe 🌊 In Florida, 50% of our wetlands have been eradicated by modern development, and many of the half that remain are threatened by a variety of human behaviors. But there are so many things we can do to have a positive impact! 🌎 Here are just a few ways to help protect our wetlands: 1. Don’t buy bottled spring water. This puts strain on our springs. Opt for a reusable water bottle that you can refill with filtered water. If you simply must buy bottled water, choose filtered water instead of spring water. 🌊 2. Opt for reusable items instead of disposable items when possible. (Even when thrown away in the trash or recycling, those items still have a chance of ending up in waterways.) 🌊 3. People with yards/gardens: plant native plants and reduce/eliminate fertilizer use that makes its way into the watershed 🌊 4. Vote for officials who prioritize the health of these important habitats 🌊 5. Get outside and explore wetlands near you to build a better appreciation of these ecosystems. 🌊 6. ? Once upon a time in an Enchanted Forest Sanctuary, there was a @flawildflowers field trip that I attended 2 months ago and then never posted about oops 🙃 We only saw one wildflower (jack-in-the-pulpit, pictured in slides 2/3) as we hiked through one of the forest trails since it was winter, but I still learned SO much! 🌱 We learned not only about wildflowers but also about other plants, wildlife, various habitats, and how they all depend on each other. 🌼 Tours led by nature experts have been a huge part of my nature journey, and I highly recommend it as a way to get outside, get moving, learn something new, and meet fellow nature lovers! 🌼 As a member of @flawildflowers I am able to attend field trips like this (non-members can also attend for a fee) and know that my annual member dues are supporting native, natural Florida. Field journal 📔 ID: Serenoa repens Common name: saw palmetto 🌴 Not to be confused with sabal palmetto, whose leaves are folded in the middle instead of flattened out, the saw palmetto is an important part of Florida’s ecology. 🌴 1️⃣ Saw palmetto is one of the plants that is “most highly used by Florida wildlife,” providing for more than 300 insects, butterflies, bees, flies, and beetles. 2️⃣ Saw palmetto is an important player in the fire ecology that Florida’s habitats have adapted to. If left too long without a burn, these plants can become a severe fire hazard. Can you picture an armadillo the size of a refrigerator? Although today’s little armadillos aren’t native to Florida, our humble peninsula *did* have giant 600+ pound armadillos during the Pleistocene. 🦣 Other mammals that inhabited Florida during the Pleistocene (which was 2 million-10,000 years ago) were mastodons, mammoths, 13-foot tall sloths, big camels, horses, bears, and saber-tooth cats. 🦣 The peninsula of Florida was also double in size during some of that time, extending far into what is now ocean.
