My favorite Murdoch Mysteries characters

I for absolutely no reason decided to make this post.

So here are my favorite Murdoch Mysteries characters (not in order)

1. Julia Ogden: What's not to love about her?!? She has great fashion, and she's smart and kind and is a coroner, psychiatrist and a doctor.

2. Emily Grace: I know she broke George's heart (Believe me I hate her for that) but overall she has to be one of my favorites. I particularly love the way she would just walk into Murdoch's office without knocking, and that time she and George stole the Scrutiny Camera to take a picture of the ghost at Queens Park. And the fact that she's QUEER?!? 👏 Cherry 👏 on 👏 top!!!!

3. Ruby Ogden: She's underappreciated, and needs to be in more episodes. I mean she is a little nosey (Couldn't keep her nose out of Murdoch's desk in 4x13!!!) But she's kind and sweet overall. Honestly probably one of the only reporter characters I like (Bc screw Iris West)

4. Rebecca James: BECAUSE YES! She's determined, smart, funny, the list goes on! I was sad to see her go, but she's going to be a real doctor now. Anyways she is probably one of my favorite Morgue Assistants (Besides Emily obviously) Gotta love her.

5. Nina Bloom: Legit iconic, girl is the definition of: "I do what I want" She is a modern woman for sure, even though her job might be a little..... UHM- SO anyways, we love her anyways.

6. Freddie Pink: Miss Pink is literally the early 1900's Frankie Drake and I'm here for that.

7. Detective Watts/Detective 90 Degree Angle: Yes I do call him that, but he stands at a 90 Degree angle!! We have some things in common: Bad posture, we're apart of the LGBTQ and a love for soft pretzels, and we can't read our own handwriting.

8. George Crabtree/George Crab-Then-Tree: George deserves so much better!!! I'm fearing for Effie's life as his Girlfriend.. Honestly! I feel like after Emily cheated on him things only got worse for him. But who doesn't love our Newfoundland Foundling?!?! I'll tell ya who: THE WRITERS!!!!

9. Eva Pearce: There is so much to unpack with Miss Pearce, but I'll just scratch the surface: She's a Sociopath in love with Detective Murdoch. And honestly I prefer her to Gillies.

10. Charlotte (Maddy and Girly): Yes, more crazy people are on my list! I honestly love Charlotte very dearly, (and Maddy and Girly) and I'm very glad she didn't turn out like Lizzy Borden.

11. James Gillies: I know I said I didn't like him, but he's interesting but I like Eva better. I am very happy to be rid of him finally. But he and I have one thing in common: We're both afraid of being hung. Murdoch's presentation put the fear in both of us.

12. Henry Higgins: Oh sweet Henry, there is not a thought behind those eyes... We love him for it!

Hey, can you tell me a bit more about the murdoch mysteries? i am considering watching it but it seems to be a long running show and i just kinda wanted to know what i’m getting into

(i wrote up something a lot more detailed and well written but tumblr deleted it for me before I could save it)

Ooooh my god yes!!! I'd love to tell you all about Murdoch Mysteries.

Okay so this is a murder mystery show set in Toronto Canada and is set in the year 1895 (well it starts in the year 1895 and then moves forward one year per season. It's been 15 seasons now so the show is currently set in about 1909/1910).

It stars William Murdoch, a police detective who solves crimes using his intellect and love of science. It's full of history with lots of real historical figures making appearances like Teddy Roosevelt, Alexander Graham Bell, Arthur Conon Doyle, Annie Oakley, Nikola Tesla, Emma Goldman, HP Lovecraft, Harry Houdini, and Helen Keller. It's equal parts drama/emotion and insanity/comedy, has got fantastic characters including some awesome women, and some really great story lines and villains.

It's the perfect mix of period drama and crime show and I cannot get enough of it. 15 years and I'm not the least bit ready to be done with it. It certainly has its moments of "what the fuck" but overall it's so good.

Let me tell you about the characters!

William Murdoch is the star. He's logical, stiff, loves modern science, a devout Roman Catholic, and believes in rules both societal and law but over the years, his friendship with Brackenreid, Julia, and George loosen him up.

Julia Ogden is the city coroner. She's a badass doctor who kicks ass in whatever field of study she tries. City coroner, medical doctor, psychologist, etc.

Thomas Brackenreid is the police inspector. He’s a traditional copper who loves a good drink and is quick to anger but he’s loyal to a fault and is much more open to the modern world than others think he is.

George Crabtree is Murdoch's right hand man. He's sweet, funny, brave, and creative. He has a penchant for writing and thinking of new inventions or giving Murdochs inventions proper names. He also believes in all things supernatural. Things like vampires, martians, venutions, werewolves, krampus, etc.

Henry Higgins is George's best friend and fellow constable. He’s a pretty big slack off and a lady chaser but is a good friend and tries his best. We love him.

And in season 10 we get the absolutely amazing Llewellyn Watts whom I adore. He's also a detective who transferred to Station House 1 because he didn’t get along with anyone in his previous Station House. He's socially awkward, much more philosophical than Murdoch, enjoys a good glass of wine, prefers the foot on the street version of police work, and oh yeah he’s gay and Jewish.

Then there are the other coroners throughout the years: Emily Grace, Rebecca James, and Violet Hart.

Emily Grace who was Julia’s first protege. She’s strong willed, intelligent, and very modern. She fights for women’s suffrage, advocates for women’s rights and loves being a pathologist. She dates George for a while and then falls in love with a woman.

Rebecca is Julia’s next protege. She’s was a medical student before losing her patronage so Julia takes her on as her assistant. She grows into a wonderful medical examiner and doctor. Rebecca is kind, brave and hungry for knowledge.

Violet Hart is the current medical examiner. She’s highly intelligent and goes after what she wants and what she believes she deserves no matter the cost. She has ambitions.

There are so many other characters to love as well like Terrence Meyers, Constable Jackson, Louise Cherry, Nina Bloom, James Pendrick, James Gillies, Eva Pearce, The Newsomes and more.

The show is amazing and full of mystery, fun, emotion, and history. I highly recommend it. Feel free to explore my #murdoch mysteries tag to see more!

Unnecessary thoughts: Gillies

Okay so I've now seen all of the James Gillies episodes and I'm gonna rank them because I like ranking things and he's my favourite MM villain.

1. Big Murderer On Campus (2x07)

- so the whole lecture confession trick is wonderful. The fact that Murdoch sports Robert Perry as the weaker one and uses it.

- honestly the whole episode being like we know Gillies did most of the work but we can't prove it so next best thing

- George finding his mother as the subplot

2. Midnight Trian to Kingston (7x09)

- so I think this might of been the first episode I watched with Gillies in (this would've been years ago though).

- the fact it's all on a train, great

- the fact that much of the tension is created by Gillies' taunting people when all he does is sit there. He's just sitting there, driving people insane.

3. The Murdoch Trap (6x13) & Crime and Punishment (6x12)

- so I mostly like this episode due to the trap aspect (which also explains why I like the s14 episode that does something similar, more advanced though). It's like this mastermind criminal is going to act like a cat does will it catches mice, they flaut themselves until they cause themselves to lose.

- did Darcy deserve to die? Does this relate to this post? No and no, I just want to say it.

- mirrors, I don't know what to say about them but I enjoy the overdramatics

- Giles coming around to finally help Murdoch and Co was also nice to watch. It's like I have rules and morals but okay, maybe and just maybe, I was wrong.

4. Murdoch in Toyland (5x11)

- creepy dolls for the win, right?

- if someone gets buried alive it's going to be a dramatic episode and yeah

- the interrogation scene with Brackenreid being all I hate your guts and I will make you bleed

- honestly do prefer this episode due to others characters like George and Henry's fingermarks debate but the whole sawing off the head of someone who betrayed is something.

5. The Devil Inside (10x10)

- so aside from the s14 finale (which puts them in overuse) I actually like the flashbacks used in the show, including this episode.

- the whole being possessed by the devil and going insane was actually interesting

Unnecessary thoughts: Big Murderer on Campus

So I just watched big murder on campus as a break from rewatching season 9 and woah despite the fact I've very recently watched the early seasons I forgot how different they are. Like the camera zooms, Julia and William not even being together, Brackenreid being a dick, Murdoch being very neurodivergent. So my random thoughts on this episode.

• "why are you shooting arrows in your office?"

"Because I thought bullets would be too disruptive."

• "get to the university quick."

"Quick..ly. Quickly."

• the noose loop with Robert Perry in it. Love Laurie Lynd's directing.

• honestly the whole lecture at the end

• "shut up James"

• George's two mothers and the fact he genuinely didn't think anything bad would come about by placing a newspaper advertisement

• I forgot how much Murdoch would just dissapear from a conversation if he got an idea

• Professor Godfrey looking down on Murdoch

• "I would give it a A-"

"A minus?"

• anytime the university is a used as a location is just great. Because I find the setting rather beautiful

• "mr perry for whatever reason went along with it". - dude took being in love with the bad boy to extreme levels

• Murdoch asks Julia out on a date.. to a lecture about batteries

• Gillies trying to get his hat back from Branckenreid

• the fact that if I didn't know until the letter and handwriting is revealed you don't really suspect Gilles and Perry

• I'm rementioning the ending lecture scene cause I love it

So I watched the Murdoch Effect

• for starters the modern theme song is excellent

• just George and Murdoch being on two completely different ends of the spectrum

• the ridiculousness of it all

• Murdoch being confused and amazed by everything while thinking he's being normal

• JULIA AS A DETECTIVE , also George as a detective BUT JULIA!

• brackenreid being some weird criminal in love with Emily just yeah

• I laughed a lot more than I should've

• the whole scene in the interrogation room

• Murdoch trying to make up a story about how he knows about the flat iron building

Brackenreid has a weakness for talented, attractive women (usually actresses) while Murdoch has a weakness for attractive, talented men (usually inventors) when it comes to murder investigations.
