And, onward to the second part of my response to your Ask *grins*

(For anyone who is interested in my response to the first part of the Ask about streams, please refer to this post: HERE )

Again, I will admit that I'm not familiar with the diet/exercise routines of other actors, but Ryuji has spoken quite a bit about his own diet/exercise routine, and so I will be focusing on that in my response :D

Because the response got quite long, please find the rest of it below the cut.

(I also severely underestimated how long it could get, so this response only includes information about this dieting routine, and I will save his exercise routine for yet another post? *is bricked*)

By nature, Sato Ryuji is someone who likes his food and drinks. During his downtime in between jobs, he can be quite a big eater as co-stars like Rachi Shinji can testify. His love for unagi (or, otherwise known as, eel in Japanese) is legendary, and he's someone who also likes sweets (particularly Japanese sweets) and alcohol. In general, it does seem like his usual diet is pretty normal (if seemingly leaning to the carnivorous side since he also does like his meat, including foods like steak pffft).

That being said, his diet when he's doing jobs is radically different. In general, based on the various times he's talked about his diet, two main factors crop up: his schedule and character expectations.

When talking about his schedule, depending on how busy he is at any given time, his diet also has the tendency to include energy bars either as a subtitute for a full meal or as a complement for a more convenient, lighter meal. As an example:

This photo was taken on the day that Ryuji, Arisawa Shoutarou and Takahashi Kensuke travelled to Osaka for the Osaka leg of the "Musical Touken Ranbu ~Bakumatsu Tenrouden~".

On that same day, prior to this, he had a morning meeting for his "Gekkan Sato Ryuji X Kobayashi Hirokazu" photobook and spent the rest of his afternoon recording eight songs for the single "Yume Hitotsu" by Team Shinsengumi with Hachisuka Kotetsu. After this was done, he travelled straight to Tokyo Station where he met up with Shoutarou and Kensuke for their journey to Osaka.

When he posted the photo, fans also pointed out how Shoutarou and Kensuke were eating somewhat proper lunches, like bento (a single-portion take-out or home-packed meal that's common in Japan), but Ryuji only had an energy bar, which he had bought to complement his lunch of a convenient store bun and an onigiri (a Japanese rice ball).

The other factor that has a significant impact on his diet is character expectations. Dieting often plays a huge part in Ryuji's process of creating a character because there is the expectation that he has to be as slim as possible to look good as a character.

Ryuji, himself, is also very self-conscious about his weight as he has commented on how easily he's gained weight since he's been able to drink alcohol. He is especially conscious about the shape of his face, once commenting in a blog post (which can be found: HERE ) that while his body has slimmed down due to his dieting efforts, his face is still like a yukimi daifuku, which is a type of Japanese mochi that's round and squishy. And so, his dieting when he's doing stage productions and/or filming can be quite extreme.

(On a more personal note, this is also the reason why comments on Ryuji being fat or his face being plump, in the negative sense, is one of my biggest pet peeves. He puts so much effort into maintaining his weight for the sake of ensuring that he doesn't betray his character's image, especially for someone with such a demanding schedule, and most of the time, I personally feel that these comments are unwarranted since, at most, he's usually a healthy weight and very far from fat. I also feel that he's already self-conscious enough about it without additional comments adding to that complex.)

In general, he'll usually go on a low-carb diet with a specific weight loss goal in mind. However, he is also rather notorious for fasting and forgoing food altogether when he finds it too troublesome to maintain his low-carb diet (he explicitly mentioned this happening during the filming of "FIVE"). During "The Brow Beat ~KLAXON PARTY 2019 at Yaon~" performance, he also mentioned how he had become addicted to fasting where there were two days in a week that he wouldn't eat anything.

That we know of, he has spoken about going on these diets for the roles of Shimizu Toshi from "FIVE", Katayama Hajime from "Ochanomizu Rock", Uchiha Sasuke from the "Live Spectacle NARUTO", Kashuu Kiyomitsu from the "Musical Touken Ranbu", and by extension, Igarashi Junya from the "Double Drive" movies because he was in the middle of dieting when he was filming the movies (both the movies were filmed in 10 days with Ryuji simultaneously being in the middle of other work).

In creating the character of Shimizu Toshi for the filming of "FIVE", he began his dieting in January and kept up with it until March with the goal of losing 5kg. He could usually be found eating hard-boiled eggs, salad chicken (a common diet food in Japan made out of chicken breasts that are lightly seasoned and steamed or boiled) and bacon (which is a recommended meat for low-carb diets). He didn't deviate from this diet even when they had filming outdoors in winter and the staff had prepared warm food, like soup, for the cast and crew.

For a bit of fun, speaking of Ryuji and hard-boiled eggs, Ryuji has gained a rather amusing reputation of being very, very bad at peeling hard-boiled eggs, which can be traced all the way back to 2015. LOL!

During the movie premiere event for "Double Drive ~Ryuu no Kizuna~", when Kizaki Yuria was asked what her first impression of Ryuji was, she commented that she "felt like he was a weird person". The reason? He asked her if she would like to help him peel hard-boiled eggs, and the following exchange ensued,

Fujita Ray: Which person asks other people if they would like to peel hard-boiled eggs???

Ryuji: *proceeds to explain how bad he is at peeling hard-boiled eggs* I asked people on the set because I thought that there would be people who would want to peel eggs, but not a single person wanted to.

Ray: So, if I only wanted to have the yolk, I should ask you to peel the egg?

Ryuji: Something like that, yes.

Other foods that Ryuji eats during his diets include dried shredded squid. One of the more amusing Ryuji dieting stories that surfaced during the filming of "Double Drive" revolved around him eating said dried shredded squid.

Ray's manager would fetch both him and Ryuji home together after filming, and while they were in the car, Ryuji would eat dried squid (and the whole car smelled like it pffft). There was once during such a time when Ryuji accidentally dropped two or three pieces in the car as he was leaving, and said, "Thank you for your hard work! Please pick them up and eat them!" Ray's response to that? "Like I'm going to eat them!" LOL!

Namioka Kazuki, another co-star of Ryuji's from the movies, also commented on how Ryuji would sit with him and eat dried squid while he ate sandwiches, and stick to his diet even if he offered food to Ryuji. Namioka-san added that, at that point, Ryuji was already very thin.

When he was preparing for the role of Uchiha Sasuke and during rehearsals for the "Live Spectacle NARUTO ~Akatsuki no Shirabe~ 2019", he also grilled chicken at home as part of his dieting routine.

Ryuji isn't as forthcoming about his drink selection during his diets, but he has mentioned that one of the biggest changes he has made is to replace his fully alcoholic drinks with highball drinks, which is considered to be a diet version of alcoholic drinks.

TL;DR:

Ryuji is a pretty big eater when he's in his downtime and not in the middle of a project.

However, when he's working, his diet can be radically different and pretty extreme. The factors that influence his dieting routine are usually his schedule and character expectations.

In terms of his actual dieting routine, he'll usually go on a low-carb diet, but will also fast and forgo food entirely when the diet becomes too troublesome for him to maintain.

Foods he has said that he's eaten while on his diet include hard-boiled eggs, salad chicken, bacon, shredded dried squid and grilled chicken.

Although he hasn't given as much information about his drinking habits during his diets, he has said that he replaces alcoholic drinks with highball drinks.

This photobook is part of the『Bessatsu Gekkan』series, a collaboration goods project by the photographer Kobayashi Hirokazu. Kobayashi-san has also worked with Sato Ryuji, Ueda Keisuke, Nakamura Yuichi, Someya Toshiyuki, Ozawa Ren, Motohiro Ota, and Tamaki Yuki for an earlier series of photobooks.

“Kamen no Kokukaku” was an unannounced, surprise song that was sung during the encore. Along with the lyrics, Ryuji also wrote a special message for fans on the lyrics card.
