K-Pop Breakdown - Lee Hi -ย โOnlyโ
์๋
ํ์ธ์! Hey everyone! I got a request for another K-pop breakdown, so here it is! Check out the music video for Lee Hiโsย โOnlyโ here! I used colorcodedlyrics.com for the English translations and Naver Dictionary to help me break them down!ย
Iโll link my lessons to the grammatical structures mentioned if you want to study them more! If you have a song youโd like me to break down, send me an ask or a message and Iโll fulfill it if I get the chance! Letโs start!
์์ ์ก๊ณ ์ ๊ฐ์ด ๊ฑธ์ด์ = Hold my hand and walk with me
์ = hand
์ก๋ค = to hold
๊ฐ์ด = together
๊ฑท๋ค = to walk
๊ฑท๋ค is an irregular verb, hence why it becomes ๊ฑธ์ด์.
Adding -๊ณ ์ to a verb essentially means that that verb was done before the next action and/or caused the next action. Soย ์ก๊ณ ์ ๊ฑธ์ด์ meansย โhold [smth] and then walk.โ
๋น๊ฐ ์ค๋ ๋ฐค์๋ ์ธ๋ก์ ๋ ๋ฎ์๋ = On rainy nights, on lonely days
๋น๊ฐ ์ค๋ ๋ฐค = rainy nights
์ธ๋ก์ ๋ ๋ฎ = days that were lonely
Adding -์/์๋ to adjective stems puts them into the past tense when youโre using them to describe nouns.ย
Attaching -๋ adds emphasis, as inย โeven on rainy nights, even on lonely days,โ orย โon rainy nights, and lonely days tooโ โ that sort of nuance.
๊ทธ๋ ํํ ๋น๊น์ ๋ด๊ฒ ๊ฐ๋ ์น ํด์ค์ = Paint me with your bright color
๊ทธ๋ = you / your -> this is pretty poetic and is mainly used when talking to someone you love romantically
ํํ๋ค = bright, vivid
๋ด๊ฒ = ๋์๊ฒ = to me
์น ํ๋ค = to paint
-์/์ด์ฃผ๋ค is used when you want someone to do something for you. In this case, sheโs pleading to have her S.Oย โpaint her.โ
๋ด๊ฐ ๋ ์ํ ๊ฒ์ ์ด๋ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์ด ์์ด์ค๋ค๋ฉด = Iโll be better to you, if you stay here with me like this
๋ = more
์ํ๋ค = in this context,ย โto be good to [someone]โ
์ด๋ ๊ฒย = like this
์์ด์ค๋ค๋ฉด = if you stay here / if youโre here
-ใด/๋๋ค๋ฉด = if -> According to Naver Dictionary, this is โan expression used to assume that someone will express his/her thought or will, which becomes the condition for the following statement.โ
์ฐพ๊ณ ์ฐพ๊ณ ์ฐพ์ ํค๋งค์ด๋ ๊ทธ๋์ = Iโve been wandering, looking, looking, looking for you
์ฐพ๋ค = to look for / to find
ํค๋ฉ์ด๋ค = to wander
Attaching -๋ to a verb stem suggests that you used to do that verb, but no longer do. In this case, sheโs saying that she was wandering, but no longer is.
๊ทธ๋์ = with you -> I believe the meaning of โwithโ carries on into the next line below.
๊ฑธ์ด ๊ฑธ์ด๊ฐ๋ ๋ฐ๊ฑธ์๋ง๋ค = Every step we take
๊ฑธ์ด๊ฐ๋ค = to walk
๋ฐ๊ฑธ์ = step
Attaching -๋ง๋ค to gives it the meaning ofย โevery [noun]โ
Literallyย โevery step that we walkโย
๊ธฐ๋ถ ์ข์ ๊ผญ ๋์ด์ ์ถ๋ ์ถค ๊ฐ์ = It feels good, it feels like weโre dancing
๊ธฐ๋ถ(์ด) ์ข๋ค = to feel good / to be happy -> Literallyย โthe feeling is goodโ
๊ผญ = in this context meansย โcloselyโ
๋์ด์ = the two of us / the both of us
์ถ๋ ์ถค = the dance that we dance
Attaching -๋ to a verb stem allows you to use that verb to describe a noun. In this case, sheโs describing the dance as the one that they do together.
๊ทธ๋ ๋ด๊ฒ ์ด ๊ณณ์ ๋ง์์์ ๋ง๋ จํด์ =ย Prepare a place in your heart for me to rest
์ฌ๋ค = to rest
์ด ๊ณณ = a place to rest
In contexts like this, attaching -ใน/์ to a verb stem and then adding a verb after it means โa [noun] to [verb],โ like ์ด ๊ณณ.
๋ง์ = heart
์์ = in / inside
๋ง๋ จํ๋ค = to prepare / to arrange
์ด ์ฌ๋์ด๋ผ๋ฉด ์ด์คํ ๊ฟ๋ ์ด๋ค์ง ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์๋ฐ = If itโs this love, even the most sloppy dreams feels like itโll come true
์ด ์ฌ๋์ด๋ผ๋ฉด = if itโs this love
-(์ด)๋ผ๋ฉด + [noun] =ย โif itโs [noun]โ
์ด์คํ๋ค = sloppy / awkwardย
๊ฟ = dream
์ด๋ค์ง๋ค = to come true
[verb stem] + ใน/์ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ๋ค = I think something will [verb] / It seems like [verb] will happen
์ด๋ค์ง ๊ฒ ๊ฐ๋ค = it seems like it will come true
-ใด/์/๋๋ฐ, when added at the end of a sentence, can have the nuance of contrasting something. In this case, perhaps it can show the contrast between the sloppy dreams and the feeling that they will come true.ย
Yet another long breakdown lol. Hope it helps you understand the song better though! See you in the next lesson! ํ์ดํ

3 Steps to a Professional-Looking Book Layout
Every year, weโre lucky to have great sponsors for our nonprofit events.ย Hermit, a 2021 NaNo sponsor, is a fast, elegant, and free to use web-based writing application that also lets you print physical copies of your books. Today, Alex, its founder and developer, shares 3 tips to create a professional looking book design by yourself.
Step #1: Make It Breathe (Spacing and Margins)
When designing a book, white space is important. Too little white space and the text will be so condensed that itโll be hard and unpleasant to read. Add too much and youโll end up with a huge amount of pages thatโll cost extra for each print.
For a 6x9โ book, 0.5โ is a reasonable amount of margin. Itโs also good to add a bit more on the โinside marginโ, the side of the page near the fold of the book โ 0.75โ would be a good amount.
Additionally, whenever a new chapter starts, itโs quite common to add a lot of top margin on its title page. This will give it some importance and help the reader understand that this is a new chapter and not just another heading.

MISCELLANEOUS INTERSTING THINGS I NOTICED IN THE SONG THIS WEEK:
The Difference Between ์ฒ๋ผ & ๋ฏ์ด
์ฒ๋ผ: Is used to say that an action/ event happens in a way that is โLIKEโ how a specific noun would carry it out.
ํฐ๋๋ ๋ฐ๋ ๋ฆฌ๋์ฒ๋ผ ์ถค์ ์ถ๋ค.
Tina dances like a ballerina
Here Tinaโs dancing is likened to that of a ballerinaโs.
๋ฐ๋ณด์ฒ๋ผ ๋๋ ์ ๊ทธ์ ๊ฑฐ์ง๋ง์ ๋ฏฟ์ด์? Why do I believe in his lies like a fool? (My version)
Here the speaker is likening themselves to a fool
๋ด๊ฐ ์ ๊ทธ์ ๊ฑฐ์ง๋ง์ ๋ฐ๋ณด์ฒ๋ผ ๋ฏฟ๋ ๊ฑฐ์ง? Why do I foolishly believe his lies? (Papago version)
It can also be attached to ์์ To explain something happening like it were in a certain place.
๋น๊ฐ์ค๋๋ ์ ํ๊ตญ์์์ฒ๋ผ ์ ๋ ํ์ ๋จน๊ณ ์ถ์ด์. On rainy days, like in Korea, I want to eat pajeon.
๋ฏ(์ด): Is similar to that of ์ฒ๋ผ except that it has the connotation of โAs Ifโฆโ
Two ways ๋ฏ(์ด) is used in a sentence:
1.) After ๋ ๊ฒ to give the meaning of a guess.
์ ๋ ํ๊ตญ์ด๋ฅผ ์ดํด์ง ๋ชปํ๋ ๋ฏ์ด ํ๋ํ๊ณ ์์ด? Why are you acting like you don't understand Korean? (The speaker guesses that the listener is pretending to not understand Korean. I guess youโre pretending to not understand Korean. It looks like youโre pretending to not understand Korean. It looks like youโre acting that you canโt understand Korean)
In this case the two clauses are connected by the speaker guessing something from the actions.
2.) Directly after the verb stem โ No guessing involved. Direct comparison.
Usually when ๋ฏ์ด is placed directly after the Verb stem, it usually has some sort of metaphor before it.
This type is usually seen in novels, because of the metaphorical language.
E.g He drinks like a fish. He sweats like heโs been caught out in a downpour.
Here there is no relation between the two clauses, as the speaker is not making a guess.
The Difference Between ์ง๊ธ & ์ด์ :
์ง๊ธ: Used to talk about something that is happening right now
E.G. Now I am eating breakfast
Now Itโs 2 am in the morning
์ด์ : Used to talk about something that is happening now, but it didnโt occur in the past
E.G Now I am eating healthy food (In the past I didnโt eat healthy food, but now I am)
Now I am a vegan (I wasnโt a vegan before hand, now I am.)
Two in context:
์ง๊ธ: Now I am studying mechanics (Nuance of: Right now, right this very second I am studying mechanics)
์ด์ : Now I am studying mechanics (With the added nuance of: You started studying mechanics, but in the past you didnโt. Earlier on you were not studying mechanics)
Difference Between ๋ฐ๋ค & ๋ฌ๋ฆฌ๋ค:
Both can be used to mean โRunโ
However ๋ฐ๋ค has the added meaning of โTo Jumpโ
๋ฌ๋ฆฌ๋ค can be used to talk about vehicles such as cars โRunningโ
OLYMPIC SPORTS NAMES:
๋์ด๋ฐ๊ธฐ The long Jump (Lit: The Broad Jump)
๋ฉ๋ฆฌ๋ฐ๊ธฐ The long jump
์ ์๋ฆฌ๋ฉ๋ฆฌ๋ฐ๊ธฐ Standing long jump
์ผ๋จ๋ฐ๊ธฐ The Triple Jump
์ฅ๋๋์ด๋ฐ๊ธฐ The Pole Vault (Lit: Pole Jump)

Difference between ๋ฌ๋ฆฌ๋ค & ๋ฌ๋ ค๊ฐ๋ค:
๋ฌ๋ ค๊ฐ๋ค means to run to a specific location and it can be used when talking about someone else running.
๋ฌ๋ฆฌ๋ค = mainly talking about yourself running
GRAMMAR:
-๋ณด๋ค
It is used to compare 2+ nouns.
The noun placed in front of ๋ณด๋ค is lower than the noun placed after it.
์ ๋ ์ด์ ๋ณด๋ค ์ค๋ ๋ฐฅ์ ๋ ๋ง์ด ๋จน์์ด์.
E.g I ate more today than yesterday. - Yesterdayโs amount of food was lesser than that of todayโs.
โIn comparison toโฆ.โ
์ ๋ ๋ด๋ณด๋ค ์ฌ๋ฆ์ ๋ ์ข์ํด์. I like summer more than spring.
By adding the particle ๋ it emphasises the speakers point.
๋ฏธ๋๋ ์๋์์น ๋ณด๋ค ํผ์๋ฅผ ์ข์ํด์. Mina likes pizza more than sandwiches.
์ ๋ ์ํ ๋ณด๋ค ๋ง๋์ด ๋ ์ซ์ด์. I hate garlic more than onions.
Examples in the song:
๋๋ ๋น๋ณด๋ค ๋ฐ๊ฒ ๋น๋ You shine brighter than the light
I will be creating a separate grammar post for this in the near future so stay tuned for that! ๐
