Best Character surnamed: Gao
Come and vote for the best characters with the same surname!*
What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
*note, the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often there will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
Propaganda is very welcome! If I’ve forgot anyone, let me know in the notes.
This is part of a larger series of ‘best character with X surname’ polls’. The overview with ongoing polls, winners, and future polls can be found here

You're so real for Yanxi palace love, that dhow is so much fun and the sub team is awesome. Yanxi is actually the reason I got the untamed a shot
IT'S SO GOOOOOOD. I don't post about it on here since this is my Untamed (and Untamed-adjacent) dumping ground, but there's a lot of shouty liveblogging over on my main. I've paused in watching it since I now have Recurring Nighttime Commitments (and tbh I'm also dragging my feet a bit because I'm on episode 40something and nobody's stepped up yet to properly fill Gao Ningxin's antagonist shoes), but I really do need to pick it back up because WEI YINGLUO MY BELOVED. She is feral and manipulative and she isn't even a little bit sorry but she also cares SO SO SO SO MUCH about the women close to her, and I want to see her thrive.
The fact that you went from Yanxi Palace to The Untamed is funny because I did the opposite! I finished The Untamed and was like "I vibe with this level of spectacle and willingness to unabashedly engage with sentiment and catharsis, but it needs more women." And then I watched Word of Honor and I was like "okay, that had more women and some of them were even doing crimes, but what about something with even MORE women, and also a coherent plot?" And then @maester-of-spreadsheets and @tavina-writes independently of each other were like "this historical drama that has only three men who remotely matter is great" and I found that it was on YouTube with GENUINELY AMAZING SUBTITLES, and off we went!

2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 for consort Gao
2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on
Consort Gao and Empress Fuca used to be friends! Until the Yingning debacle. This is found in the missing scenes of Yanxi (and was accurate to irl) and I will DIE on this hill because it just makes everything they go through in the drama SO MUCH WORSE.
3. Obscure headcanon
As far as headcanons for Gao Ningxin go, I think all of them are obscure, but I like to think she actually had a decent relationship with her younger brother despite their shitty dad and her outward disdain for him. After all, HE was the one who was trying to see her before her death and he was the one who sent her the dog. (snowball my beloved ;-;)
4. Favorite line
wjkdhg Honestly I think her most iconic line was still about how like "look if I wanted a CHILD I'd birth one myself, do you think I'm stupid??" like, Iconique, what a queen, what an amazing defining trait of her character. Yes she IS an attempted baby murderer but have you considered she's not doing it bc she's jealous of the baby having woman. If she wanted a kid of her own she'd have one herself!!!
5. Best personality trait
She's theatrical. She's amazingly manufactured. I love that about her SO MUCH. It's such a fun parallel to Yingluo!!!
6. Worst personality trait
I think despite her being so theatrical, Consort Gao really isn't...very good at hiding how much she hates or dislikes someone? I think this is what does her in in the end and :( I love her so that makes me sad.
Thanks for the ask Mar!! :D I love her so much.

Now Watching… (November TV Shows and Movies Rec List)
Julie and the Phantoms
(Netflix)
Julie Molina has been unable to sing or play music since her mom passed away. When she’s cleaning out her mom’s garage studio a year later, three ghosts suddenly appear. Luke, Alex, and Reggie were members of the band Sunset Curve twenty five years ago, and they died just as they were making a name for themselves. The guys try to figure out an afterlife where people are able to see they when they play music with Julie, and Julie is encouraged inspired by them to keep going with her passion.
This soundtrack is amazing, and you really fall in love with all of the band. Literally cannot stop listening to it.
Enola Holmes and Enola Holmes 2
(Netflix)
Enola is the younger sister of Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes. She has lived and learned from her mother for her whole life until she wakes up to find her missing on the morning of her sixteenth birthday. Running from the boarding school where Mycroft wants to put her, Enola sets out to find her mother in London. Along the way, she meets the young Viscount Tewkesbury, who seems to be embroiled in a plot of his own.
In the second movie, Enola has started her own detective agency. Unfortunately, she’s not getting much business — until a factory match girl asks for help finding her older sister. She quickly realizes that this surface level missing persons case goes much deeper. Meanwhile, her brother Sherlock has a case of his own, and for once he’s having some trouble with it.
It’s hard to write mystery and write it well. The cinematic experience cleverly takes you on a journey along with Enola’s quick thinking and deductions. Enola is headstrong, funny, and resourceful and I love her. Also, for anyone who is a fan, tie-ins to the Arther Conan Doyle series are fun to try and spot.
The Dragon Prince — Season Four: Mystery of Aaravos
(Netflix)
The Dragon Prince series is set in the fantasy world of Xadia, where the the land is split between humans and elves. War breaks out when the humans use dark magic to slay the king of the dragons and destroy his only egg. Years later, in the human kingdom of Katolis, Prince Callum and his younger half brother Ezran find out that the egg has not actually been destroyed. They out on a journey to bring peace, along with a moon shadow elf, Rayla.
There’s a two year gap between the end of season 3 and the beginning of season 4. The characters have grown in that time, both in personality, relationships, and skill. But beware! It seems that the shadowy antagonist has also been growing in power during these past two years…
In this show, you can really connect with the characters on their journeys and see them develop. I love the animation style too. They actually incorporate 3D animation, but take out frames to give it a 2D effect! They seem to have slightly altered it in season four, maybe they didn’t bother with a 2D effect this time? Many characters have changed hairstyles though, and some of them I don’t necessarily agree with…
Story of Yanxi Palace 延禧攻略
(MZTV Exclusive Chinese Drama - YouTube)
Set in the Qing dynasty during Emperor Qianlong’s reign, Wei Yingluo starts working as an embroiderer in the Forbidden City. The real reason she’s there, however, is to find out the truth behind her sister’s murder. With quick wit and a clever tongue, nothing will stop her from getting her just retribution. But with drama in the imperial harem beginning to affect even her, and jealous rivals at every turn, can she still push through?
This has 70 episodes and I’m not even half way through. TBH I was looking forward to a mystery to solve and justice to be served, but I’m honestly a little weary of the constant thorns of antagonists like Gao Ningxin. If this is the tone for all 70 episodes… If you want a more lighthearted Commoner in the Imperial Palace show, I would recommend Delicacies Destiny, which is now on Disney+ and is rather funny.
Ascendance of a Bookworm 本好きの下剋上 ~司書になるためには手段を選んでいられません~
(Crunchyroll)
When a girl from the modern world wakes up in the body of a frail five year old child living a medical life, her first concern is to ask where all the books are! Upon realizing that books are highly expensive and only for nobility, Myne sets out to create one of her own. She starts improving the life of her family, and her intelligence and new inventions draw the attention of many. Despite the fevers that often affect her body, her ultimate goal is to become a librarian.
This is !! The best isekai I’ve ever watched !!! I’m not usually a huge fan of this genre but I love this series. I love all of Myne’s DIY projects and her obsession with books. It’s actually a Japanese light novel series but the anime does a wonderful job and actually adds to Myne’s characterization a little bit. This is at the top of my list for animes, right up there with Shirayuki.
CHUANG 2020
(WeTV - CHUANG 2021 -YouTube)
This is a competition show from China where 100 talented trainees from Asia compete by singing and dancing to see who will make the cut for the new seven member girl group. 2020 was an amazing lineup!
Some personal favorites from this season are Zhong FeiFei, Curley Gao, Tu Zhiying, Ao Xinyi, Wang Ke, Zhang Yifan, Lin Junyi, and… I will never finish this list, will I? A little hard to find some of the episodes though (Ep 3, looking at you!)

hi ro! i know at some point u recommended yanxi palace, and though im usually rather adverse to dramas of any kind, i tried it out and it's SO GOOD!!! wei yingluo is exactly the kind of character i love to follow, and through yanxi i've also learned so much abt my culture!! thank u for rec-ing it and everything!!! oh- i wanted to know ur thoughts on it too! who's ur favorite consort, and do you like the emperor? also, what's your favorite scene?
hello!! i’m so happy to hear this, i love this drama so much and i’m glad that it could let you know more about your culture :D
my favorite consort is gao ningxin... i love mean women so much and she is so mean and selfish and at the same time a very fragile and forlorn person... you can really tell that she was very young when she got into the imperial harem and she used to get a lot of attention and love from the emperor, before being put aside. it embittered her and made her who she is, and also!! in the novel she was very fond of wei yingluo’s sister and tried to investigate her death 😭
i love empress fucha just as much as her too. my favorite scene in the whole drama is when the empress has just lost her child again and she loses it and starts crying at the emperor and asks him “who am i?” it was so raw and powerful, you could see all the layers and years of grief and self-control breaking at once and leaving her shattered. such a gorgeous and terrible moment!!
i actually like the emperor a lot, which i wasn’t expecting when i started the drama at all. unlike fuheng, who spends all his time swallowed by regret and jealousy, he very much doesn’t allow anything to get to him and i think his relationship with yingluo is very interesting because of it. yingluo is extremely independent and strong-willed and she could never have lasted long with someone as emotional as fuheng, whereas she just clicks well with the emperor and retains her own authority around him, and he indulges it without ever fully realizing how much she plays him. it’s delightful.
