So @gayfergus sent me these amazing pictures of two rare Disney Dolls that came out in the 90s of a couple of Mermaid girls meant to be Ariel's friends

Don't know why her box art tail and shell colors are different then the dolls but gotta say I adore how she has a underwater Walkman xD

Nothing says 90s Teen like a Walkman! Even if its under the sea and before the invention of electronic x)

I dunno the 'Swimman” probably works with magic or 'eel-lectricity' or something xD

Looking up these two led me to find Ariel’s other “Cool Teen” friend (my gosh that’s so ‘Hello fellow kids’):

Who apparently has a “Shell-o-phone” (can’t be a Shellphone cuz it has a seaweed cord I love it xD)

Also Cool Teen Ariel apparently came with under water Pizza xD

But I love that this adds to Ariel have more friends/peers and that so many of them are POC!

wow they surprise us all I was expecting the little mermaid I even thought the new member of the cast was the Vanessa but they surprise us HSM3 how do you feel? I'm thrilled! But also a little bit sad if it's the last season it feels like it will unless they do one more with the musical being about themself where they have to sing the songs they wrote and also write new etc either way rina as troyella HEY NOW HEY NOW THIS IS WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF!

It definitely took me by surprise. I was FULLY expecting TLM. It’s funny though, because as much as we got hints towards TLM, I spent the last couple of weeks just wracking my head trying to think of how they were going to make that work and give proper storylines to work with the characters off stage (like how every person represents a character outside of the play too). But now that they are doing hsm3, I totally can see it. I’m trying to keep my expectations low, because we could be surprised and get a 5th season. Honestly, I thought hsm3 (like most) would be what they did for a final season. So much of the plot would make more sense for the last semester? They could give us more episodes and have it cover an entire school year (less likely) or they could do your idea and have a final season that is representative of them like hsm3 did in hsm3 (more likely).

Either way, I’m really excited. I feel like the whole Corbin/Channing thing was Tim’s test run to see how well he could film a show within a show. It actually worked a lot better than I think most of us were expecting (it just sounded so chaotic at first hahahaha). I think that it’ll be Corbin’s idea to use these kids as extras since he already knows them. I’m also SO excited to see the reunions of these characters. HSM was literally foundational to my childhood so it is going to do my heart a lot of good seeing everyone together. It will make the series feel whole. Like they checked off a big “must” for the show. My dream is that they don’t just keep hsm4 in universe and actually release one (using similar scenes to the ones we see filmed in hsmtmts) on Disney+. It would be the most meta thing in existence but wouldn’t it be such a satisfying take-away from hsmtmts?

I’m already going wayyy down the rabbit hole of all of the seasons possibilities (including some ideas on how zac and Vanessa will talk to ricky and gina about being troy and gabriella and we will just have layers and layers of parallels and romantic plots stemming from the overlaps). And from all of the excitement Josh and Sofia are generating, I genuinely think s4 might top s3 which would be VERY impressive and difficult to do. Here’s to the start of speculating over the next few months 🥂

Huge Little Mermaid and Prince Eric fan and LOVED Prince of Song and Sea! Fantastic characterization of the OG movie characters and awesome and endearing new additions and lots of interesting new lore. And yay Queer Rep! I will be eagerly awaiting your Phillip book as Phillip is also a very good boy and I'm excited to see your take on him. I do have one extremely nerdy question: Is your Gabriella an homage to the TLM animated series character Gabriella and was there any back and forth with Disney about using the name given the pre-existing character in the franchise?

Hi! Thank you so much for messaging! I love hearing from people who like my books! Phillip is the best boy, and I hope you love his book, too.

I did try to pick names that would be nice nods to the preexisting works and fit within the worldbuilding, but the spinoffs, sequels, and books are all part of their own little pocket universes. Because there are so many, avoiding every name would be hard (and would really put a damper on fun references).

That said, there's a sort of similar thing for Phillip's book which I hope is fun!

Gabriella is a recurring character in Disney's 1992-93 television series The Little Mermaid. She is a deaf Latina mermaid who communicates in sign language; her friend Ollie, an octopus, serves as her interpreter. The character of Gabriella was based off of a girl who was a fan of the show but had died during the show's first season. She also appears in a Disney princess short story film. Give me a minute find the name of it.

Ah okay, Yeah I vaguely remember her. I used to watch that show back when it was on Saturday mornings, but I don’t think Disney has put it or Aladdin out on DVD. Yeah I remember Ollie. Thank you for reminding me of her. I had heard about that but I didn’t know if it was true. I had a book from the series where Ursula turned into a mermaid and tried to be friends with one of Ariel’s sisters to go after Triton’s Trident but got stopped because Ariel exposed her. It was interesting to see.

Favorite TLM series character? (like not in the movie) i love gabriella and archimedes

Gabriella and Archimedes are SOLID choices! This isn’t from the series, per se, but I LOVED this nursemaid type of character she had in the Once Upon a Princess series! It was like Ariel’s grandmother I think...but she had been to the surface and fallen in love with a human, too, AND she had all the tea on Ursula and Sebastian!

Since so many people want a disabled princess, I think she should be similar to Gabriella from the TLM series (or at least handled and have as much effort and maybe even more put into a disabled princess). She was a tribute to a fan that died and was a deaf mermaid who spoke real ASL. She's a amazing character and I would love a princess, heroine, or character similar to Gabriella.

The Little Mermaid 2019 Halle Bailey Cast As Disney's Ariel

Ever since The Little Mermaid casting came out people have been sharing their thoughts on Halle Bailey cast as the famous redhead mermaid Ariel in the media. I’m going to share my thoughts. BTW this post took me days and many hours to make.

I will be including other Disney Princesses in this post. Jasmine, Pocahontas, Esmeralda, Mulan and Tiana only because they are 2d animated aka Traditional Animation. Brave, Frozen, Tangled, Moana aren’t made in 2d animation.

Fans have been including the ‘science excuse’ and different ‘the story takes place’ excuse. I’m not going to use that. I know every mermaid isn’t white. So many mermaid stories from different cultures so there’s more than just white mermaids. This post won’t be including ‘the science and takes place at here’ . I’m talking about only the Disney version. Ok i’ll start my post now.

Halley Bailey As Ariel

Halle Bailey is a beautiful black woman, great singer and I’m pretty sure she’ll be a great actress. Image source in tag.

Sorry I’m not trying to be mean but I don’t think Halle should be cast as Ariel and I will say why. Please calm down. First I would like to say is remember i’m ONLY talking about the DISNEY VERSION of The Little Mermaid and NOT the original story by Christian Anderson.

The Little Mermaid 1989

Disney The Little Mermaid first came out in 1989. The first time Ariel appeared on screen she was a white mermaid/later human and still was white. She didn’t appear on screen as a poc mermaid/human. She was also white in the 2 movie sequels and in the 90′s tv show.

Princesses of Color Including Esmeralda

Now i’m fine with having a Disney Princess Of Color. There’s nothing wrong with that. We don’t always need a white princess. I truly believe it’s good for adults, teens, and kids to see princesses from different cultures and color. They can see themselves in that characters, wanting to be like them, or just be them. Looks, dreams, love, wanting to see the world. Every girl at one time in their life wanted to be their favorite princess. 

Princess Jasmine The 1st Main Famous Princess of Color

When 1992 Aladdin came out Jasmine was the first non-white princess. She looked so different from Ariel and I loved it. She started ‘A Whole New World’ for future female princess of color characters being introduced over the years.

Pocahontas (1995),  

Esmeralda (1996) when I was young Esmeralda was still considered an original disney princess.

 Mulan (1998)

 Tiana (2009)

For some unknown reason Esmeralda, Shanti, Tiger Lily, and Alice were no longer on the Disney Princess List. All these characters are great.

What If Disney Didn’t Make Ariel Originally White In The 2d Animation Film. 2 Examples Below

If Ariel wasn't white in the original disney 1989 film, movie sequels, and 90's TV show then I wouldn't want a white actress playing her in the live action.

First Example: If I saw Ariel as a person of color or mermaid of color in the original 1989 Disney version like the right image below then I would only want a person of color actress to play her in the live action. Halle would be perfect. She would be #MyAriel. BTW whoever made the image on the right below it’s really good and we need a gif of it. Image source in tag. 

Second Example: If the original 1989 animated Disney film created Ariel with green skin with a pink fin when she was in her mermaid form. Later on in the movie when she's turned into human by Ursula and later by Triton she's a person of color then I would want to see it that way in the live action. They would be #MyAriel

Feelings Of Character Change

I’ll admit when I first heard the news Halle was cast as Ariel I was disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing the 1989 white redhead live on screen. I don’t blame TLM fans being angry. Picture you hear that Disney is making a live version of The Princess and the Frog. You’re all excited and jumping for joy that your favorite princess who you see yourself in was finally coming to the BIG SCREEN LIVE. 

You find out later that Tiana will be played by a white actress. 

You would be disappointed and angry. Everyone knows Tiana is black not white or any other color. She was black in the 2009 traditionally animated film. If they make The Princess and the Frog live then I want to see a black actress cast as her. 2009 animated Tiana will always be #MyTiana. I feel the same with all the other princess characters. #MyJasmine #MyPocahontas #MyEsmeralda #MyMulan and yes even #MyMoana

Adding To The Movie

If you have seen the new live action Aladdin then you know they added an extra character who was Jasmine's best friend and future wife of Genie. I have no problem with them adding a character or 2 to the story. They can even give Ariel another best friend who’s a mermaid or human. Flounder doesn’t have to be her only friend. 

A Little Trivia Of The Little Mermaid 90's TV Show.

Ariel did have a latina friend who was in the animated tv show. Her name was Gabriella and she was inspired by Gabriella Angelina Bommino who was a fan of TLM show.

Disney Remakes

If Disney is going to be making live remakes of the old disney classic movies then they should make it like it originally was in the animated film and that includes all the disney princesses. It’s alright to make some changes like adding a character or song but keep the characters like they originally are in the animated films. I’m still going to go see the movie because I want to see how it’ll turn out. Plus Ariel is my favorite princesses and very close to my heart.
