"Somehow, I expected that this would happen eventually." Gabe shook his head. He looked over Rico with a glare that could make mountains cower. "Traitor," he spat.

"Oh, I'm the traitor?!" Rico stabbed himself in the chest so hard it must've hurt. "You knew full well what you got yourself into!"

"You know what? You're right, I shouldn't have let you get here in the first place."

Rico barked out a short laughter.

"You really think you could've stopped me?"

"I know I could've... And I can still stop you now!" Gabe jumped from his seat.

"Oh yeah? I'd like to see you try!" Rico grabbed him by the collar.

"Get your hands off me..."

"If you think you're better..."

They started talking at the same time.

"I swear you'll regret it!"

"Guys!"

Naomi broke them up and pushed herself between them. Once she made sure they weren't going to bite each other's throats out anymore, she heaved a deep sigh and pinched the bridge of her nose.

"I know it's the last taquito, but you can just share."

Gabriel Rico "Nimble and sinister tricks (To be preserved without scandal and corruption) I" / art critic

In February 2020, this 2018 sculpture, which cast various objects like tennis balls, rocks, and a knife within a sheet of glass, was destroyed while on view during the Zona Maco art fair in Mexico City. Looking to photograph the work, an art critic named Avelina Lésper placed a can of Coca-Cola on the piece, at which point the work came loose and shattered on the concrete floor.

Rather than apologize for the incident, Lésper made light of it, explaining that she'd wanted to take the photograph in order to relay her negative views towards the piece. “I had an empty can of soda, I tried to put it on one of the stones, but the work exploded,” she said. “It was like the work heard my comment and felt what I thought of it." She also told the artist's dealer that they should leave the piece as is and try to sell it, citing Marcel Duchamp’s Large Glass. (When the French artist’s glass sculpture was accidentally damaged in transit, he declared that it was "now complete.")

In response, Mexican gallery Galeria OMR, who was showing the work, said in a statement posted to Instagram: "We do not understand how a supposed professional critic of art destroyed a work," adding that by "getting too close to the work of art to put a can of soda on it and take a picture to make a criticism," Lésper had "undoubtedly caused the destruction" and showed “a huge lack of professionalism and respect.”

Twelve loud chimes of the city bell traveled through the air and reached a camp deep in the jungle. Gabe pulled out his pocket watch and sighed.

"Happy birthday to me," he mumbled to himself.

He put his watch back in the pocket and turned around to look at the sleeping camp.

It's not that he didn't like training camps, quite the opposite, and he possibly started liking them even more once he became the trainer and not the trainee, but stars did he sometimes wish he didn't have to go. But he was a royal guard and he had his duties. He sighed again. Even if it meant missing his own twentieth birthday.

Suddenly a sound of footsteps pulled him from his thoughts.

"Who's there?!" He called out, putting one hand on his sword and raising the alarm whistle to his mouth with the other. He scolded himself internally for loosing focus.

"On yooooouuuuur speeeecial daaaaaaaay," a butchered version of the birthday song came as an answer and Gabe recognized Rico's voice.

"You really have no respect for the curfew, do you?" Gabe complained but his pose again became more relaxed.

"'Wow Rico it's so nice you remembered!'" Rico said in a mocking voice. "You're welcome, Nuñez, happy birthday."

Gabe rolled his eyes.

"Thanks Rico, it's nice you remembered," he said in an overly nice tone.

"You're welcome, Nuñez, happy birthday." Rico grinned. "Now catch." He threw Gabe a bottle, he was hiding behind his back. "It will want you up while you stand here like a bump on the log."

"You brought beer to a training camp?" Gabe asked, unbelieving, trying to read the etiquette in the dim light of the moon.

"No?" Rico scoffed and opened himself another bottle. "I'm not an idiot. I requisitioned it from the recruits who brought beer to a training camp."

"I can't drink it." Gabe shook his head.

"Of course you can, you're" he made a flourish with his hands "an adult now."

"I meant that I'm holding the watch, Rico." Gabe rolled his eyes.

"Agh you're no fun," Rico groaned. "Alright give it back."

He took the bottle and reached to his shoe.

"Luckily I'm used to how stiff you are," he developed a third bottle from the upper of his shoe like a street magician pulls out a rabbit from his hat. "So I brought you a soft one."

Gabe shook his head but accepted the drink.

"Well, here's to you, Gabe," they clinked their glasses and took a big swing of their drinks.

"I bet this isn't exactly how you planned your twentieth?" Rico laughed.

"Not exactly," Gabe joined him.

"Let me guess, I bet you were supposed to have a home baked cake..."

"Rico," Gabe said in a warning tone.

"What? A home baked cake from your parents does sound nice, I'm not mocking you." He was still grinning that irritating grin of his, but it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Ah but even the best family dinner isn't enough for a twentieth," he continued quickly. "So? When's the fiesta?"

"And why are you so sure you're invited?" Gabe snorted.

"Pff, there's no good party without me." Rico put a hand to his chest, not even pretending to be humble.

Gabe laughed at his over exaggerated expression.

"It was supposed to be today," his laugh turned sadder.

"If not for this stupid camp?" Rico added and Gabe hummed quietly in agreement.

For a moment they continued to drink in silence. Gabe made sure to scan the area around them, since, as he reminded himself, he was still on duty.

"And you've ruined the party - and it's not even much of a party to begin with!" Rico broke the silence again.

Gabe only laughed at his complaint.

"So what did you plan? For the party?" Rico continued. "I bet the princess was invited," he added with a smirk.

"Yeah," Gabe caught himself rolling his eyes again. He realized he did that quite a lot around Rico. "Mateo and Naomi too. My friends from school and scouting, you, Miguel, Adán and a few other guards."

"Awww you'd actually invite me?" His voice was mocking again but Gabe could see his smile was genuine.

"Duh" he nudged him in the side with his elbow. "There isn't a good party without you, after all."

They both laughed. Rico tried to get even for the nudge and stabbed him in the rib, to which Gabe wanted to answer with a slap on the back of his head but Rico dodged and for a few minutes they danced around each other and tried to hit the other like schoolboys during a break. Finally Rico managed to get a hit at Gabe's neck but at the same time shook his bottle too hard and spilled his drink on himself.

"Okay that's probably a sign to stop," he said wiping his face with his sleeve, and they both burst into laughter.

"Anyway, as I was saying," Gabe picked up once they calmed down. "I was thinking we could meet up in this one basement at Mercado Central. I know a few people who play guitars, accordion and whatnot" he shrugged "and we'd just have a party. Kind of like under Shuriki, except I'm pretty sure Elena wouldn't have us imprisoned for that," he chuckled.

"Ah, I've never actually been to a concert like that," Rico mused. "But it sounds fun."

He smiled and took another sip from the bottle.

"Let's just hope they won't come up with something at the last moment again when we come back," Gabe added bitterly and his grievance was answered by a loud chimes of the bell.

He sighed.

"Well, I still have half an hour of the watch left, but you should probably go back to sleep," he said to Rico and he couldn't stop himself from a remark. "You know you won't get any special treatment tomorrow just cause you're hangover?"

Rico finished his bottle in one swing and answered with an exaggerated drunk lisp.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

Gabe chuckled and finished his drink too.

"Come on, I'll throw it out." Rico took the empty bottle from him. He took a few slow steps back. "We probably wotn have much time to celebrate, so again, happy twentieth, ya kid." He gave him a mock salute and left towards the tents.

"Thanks, old man!" Gabe shouted after him and laughed.

He turned around and closely scanned the forest wall before him. He pushed his face deeper into his collar to hide it from the cutting snow - and hide his smile from any curious night spectators. Rico really could make a good party.

Fannish Year Review - 2023

1. Your main fandom of the year: TXF always. Although I’ve taken a break from actually watching the show since I finished my rewatch and I’m at a low eb of reading fanfic, tumblr keeps my fandom needs fed. It’s the show I think about every single day whether I’m actively watching or not.

2. Your favorite film this year: If we’re talking new films then Barbie and Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret were my favorite ones I saw in theaters. Barbie was just such a delight and fun theater going experience. Are You There God was such a sweet, well done adaptation.

3. Your favorite book this year: Again, if we’re talking new (to me) books then Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. I’ve never really had much interest in video games so I was surprised how much it sucked me in. Plus I read it on vacation in Puerto Rico so extra points for the experience of reading under an umbrella on a beautiful beach eating ice cream out of a pineapple.

4. Your favorite album or song this year: I just looked on Spotify and I don’t think I downloaded a new album or created a new playlist this year 🙈

5. Your favorite tv shows this year: The third season of Happy Valley - all the time and history that can make a conversation between family members the most nail biting, tension filled, heartbreaking scenes. Reservation Dogs - I caught up just in time for the final season and I’m so glad I finally watched it. I watched some old shows too that I missed for whatever reason and we’re the perfect evening soaps to put on when I needed a break after work - Felicity, Switched at Birth.

6. Your favorite tumblr community this year: I don’t really interact with anyone outside of txf community lol

7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year: I started watch Doctor Who and caught up with Ten in time for the specials - Ten and Donna are definitely my favorite duo so far so it was just delightful and I don’t have any of the long term investment that makes an event like that angst filled for those truly in the fandom.

8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year: txf fandom has definitely slowed down, but I’m in a lull too so can’t say I’m surprised.

9. Your tv/movie boyfriend and/or girlfriend of the year: Mulder/Scully - what can I say, I’m consistent

10. Your biggest squeeze moment of the year: Fanfic writers coming back to finish or continue old fics: Petrichor sequel Singing of Mount Abora by @aloysiavirgata and the final chapter of throat eye and knucklebone finished five!! years later by audries.

Nonviolent Communication Part Five Food Guide/Reference Post

Disclaimer: Photos are not mine. Variations of some of the food exist as it depends on the region of the individual.

Pan Dulce - Sweet Bread (Mexican pastries)

Concha - word literally translates to "Seashell" but it's a kind of pan dulce (the specific kind Miguel and reader ate)

Tamales - I feel like everyone knows these but they can be made out of chicken or beef, and of green or red chile.

Sweet Tamales - These are sweet tamales so they include sugar and can include different toppings like raisins, pineapple, and cinnamon sticks (not to eat but for flavor). Sometimes this varies based on the background of the individual. My mom has always added food coloring to make them pink and light green.

Pozole - A kind of soup/stew made from hominy and meat (can be chicken or beef). There's different flavors based on the kind of chiles used. The typical versions I've had are red and green but I also know of pozole blanco or "white pozole." People add different toppings to it based on the region they are from like cabbage, diced onion, and avocado.

Buñuelos - fried dough fritter. These are so good and are usually made for Christmas time (based on my experience).
