I need people to start talking about Kathryn Lasky’s books because that woman is insane.

She asked “what if owls were put into concentration camps?” And then also “what if owls were nazis?” And then also “what if wolves practiced eugenics?” And then also “what if the only way to fight an oppressive system is through building community and educating ourselves and the people in our lives that we form relationships with?” “What if by refusing to make academia accessible, we allow nazism?” And then she targeted all of that to 8 year olds and I ate it up, at the end of her series the world fucking explodes no joke, all of the characters I got to know and love died and she just wrote that into her wolf eugenics book like it wasn’t a big deal.

I like to think that after death, he would often leave the heavens to visit his mortal world, guide lost scrooms, and perhaps living owls who have become adrift and fallen astray. I feel like we as a society need to bring back children's books with cute fuzzy animals murdering and maiming each other.

#some of those books did not pull punches #guardians of ga'hoole's major story conflict was fighting owl nazis #constance the badger from redwall was a nun with a body count #mistmantle chronicles started with the murder of an infant prince and bad guys who did culling & forced labor #warrior cats had some of the most gruesomely graphic deaths i had ever read as a child #including a cat dying in childbirth in the third book #i'm just saying it left one with a very unique reading experience as a child #i also partially wonder if the characters being cute animals “softened the blow” of stories with more complex themes & allegory #oh and also watership down

one more thing that i love about the japanese version of the novels is that the maps were all unique to each book

just look at them !

it really highlights just where our heroes went as the stories progressed in the books, and i think that's some good attention to detail

#i only had access to the first three books (1st is physical copy the other two books were excerpts) #buttt i think i'm gonna assume that the maps of the other books will be different in each book as well #guardians of ga'hoole #the map is even better irl because it's a fold out mini poster ! #fantasy books having maps in them ? amazing. spectacular. #the maps are detailed and are different and unique throughout each book to highlight where the characters went to as the story progressed ? #REAL GOOD SHIT
