Fume Hood Safety Series- FHSS 1

In the realm of laboratory safety, the occurrence of fume hood catastrophes continue to perplex and concern researchers and industry professionals alike. The pressing question remains: Why do these incidents persist, and how can we effectively prevent them?

At Metrolabs, our expertise lies in the design, manufacturing, and installation of a wide range of laboratory furniture, including fume hoods, anti-vibration tables, and storage cupboards, among others. With decades of experience in the field, we have come to realize that a significant number of our inquiries stem from fume hoods manufactured by various brands that have experienced failures. Significantly, while there seems to be a loose correlation between the age of the fume hood system, this does not appear to be a causative factor. Quite surprisingly, despite the scale of the issue, there seems to be a dearth of discussion on its causative factors, autopsies of incidents, and possible preventative measures. In this inaugural article of the Fume Hood Safety Series, we delve into two case studies, examining the preventive measures and general practices crucial for the safe operation of fume hoods within a laboratory environment.

Case Study 1University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Laboratory Explosion (2008):

In 2008, a fume hood explosion at UCLA resulted in the unfortunate death of a research assistant. Sangji, 23, research assistant, was working with a nitrogen manifold in a fume hood on the fourth floor of UCLA’s Molecular Sciences Building. Unexpectedly, the syringe plunger dislodged from the barrel, exposing tBuLi to the atmosphere. Inadvertently, Sangji also knocked over an open flask of hexane in the hood. The tBuLi ignited, causing a fire that spread to the solvent and Sangji’s clothing. It is unclear whether Sangji wore eye protection, but was not wearing a lab coat and had nitrile gloves on. Despite the presence of a safety shower in the lab, Sangji could not utilize it. Sangji was promptly taken to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to injuries a few days later.

Analysis: The explosion at UCLA was caused by the reactive nature of tBuLi, along with the accidental presence of hexane which led to an uncontrolled cross-reaction and subsequent explosion inside the fume hood. Improper handling techniques in the handling of the tBuLi and improper storage practices- the accidental presence of hexane, which was negligently left inside the hood could be theorised to be the main cause of the accident. Not wearing PPE such as the lab coat or eye protection definitely contributed to the severity of the consequences of the accident.

Prevention: Proper training on handling reactive chemicals, implementing rigorous safety protocols, wearing of proper personal protective incidents (PPE), ensuring appropriate storage conditions and protocols, ensuring the absence of other substances that might cross-react catastrophically, and conducting regular risk assessments can help prevent similar incidents.

Case Study 2Evacuation at the University of Utah Lab after Fume Hood Explosion (2023):

A small explosion in room 328 of the Fletcher Building at the University of Utah led to the evacuation of the facility. The incident, contained within a fume hood, occurred during laboratory work in the Physics & Astronomy Department. No injuries were reported, and damage was limited to the fume hood and the lab. Authorities, including the university’s Environmental Health and Safety Department, are investigating the cause of the explosion. There is no ongoing risk to the surrounding area.

Analysis: Education on proper synthesis methods, strictly abiding by the chemical incompatibility charts, frequent fume hood assessment & maintenance activities in accordance with the IQ/OQ charts, and proper chemical storage protocols might have prevented this mishap.

Why talk about Fume Hood safety in particular?

There have been increasingly numerous fume hood-related catastrophic accidents across India, and many of them have been preventable. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to state that it is truly due to gods grace that there aren’t a much greater number of accidents that occur, because of many of the poor lab techniques, safety practices and poor engineering practices in the design and manufacture of the hood being followed. To prevent any such devastating but perfectly preventable accidents from happening at all, we must autopsy such incidents, and implement good lab practices and good engineering practices in the design, manufacturing and usage of such hoods. This will increase the safety of personnel inside the laboratory, increase work efficiency, mitigate risk in case of accidents and also prove to be more environmentally friendly. To address the need for Fume Hood Safe Practices is the need of the hour for us all.

Proper Usage of Fume Hoods: Guidelines for Accident Prevention and risk mitigation

Material of Construction: Compatible material of construction for each part of the fume hood. The reactions and processes undergone in the fume hood, the reagents used, and the temperatures reached, etc. must be kept in mind- the chosen material of construction in every aspect of the fume hood must withstand all these conditions that occur during the due course of usage.

Scrubber compatibility and maintenance: Scrubbers must be chosen in accordance with the type of reactions and the type of reactions and care must be taken to ensure that incompatible reactions are not undergone inside the fume hood. Prompt, regular maintenance must take place according to the IQ/OQ protocol.

Proper reagent storage: Reagents must be clearly labeled and properly stored within the appropriate storage area. Proper technique must be followed for the handling of all reactions and processes. Proper training must be provided for all personnel for safety protocols, proper technique, and good laboratory practices.

Why talk about Fume Hood safety in particular?

Fume hood explosions in laboratory settings can have severe consequences for both personnel and infrastructure. By examining real incidents, we can better understand the causes and work toward implementing effective preventive measures. To prevent fume hood explosions, it is crucial to prioritize proper chemical handling, storage, and disposal practices, conduct thorough risk assessments, ensure proper ventilation, and maintain electrical safety protocols. By prioritizing laboratory safety and adhering to these preventive measures, we can minimize the risks of fume hood explosions and create a safer working environment for researchers. Not a request just wanted to say I went to emerald city comic con and it was cool and there were lots of cool COD cosplayers. I only really told one I liked there cosplay but they all looked super cool!

Also if I may ask do you tend to buy or make cosplay? I’m an amateurish cosplayer and I’m planning on making a genshin cosplay but just figuring out how to get all the little pieces and details is difficult.(honestly I’m more making it for the validation of other cosplayer since most cosplays I’ve worn have been more or less pretty simple). I used to sew my own costumes(for Madoka and BlackCat!Diva), but I moved out of my parent's house and out of the country after I finished school, and I didn't want to bring a sewing machine to a rental apartment, so I'm buying costumes now. I usually just tailor them to my needs and do renovations that don't require a lot of manufactured stitching. For example, for my Kokomi dress from DokiDoki cosplay, I sewed another layer of sparkly fabric underneath to make it more sparkly, I reinstalled all the furniture(because the stitches from the seller tend to be kinda flimsy and you need to resew them so nothing would get lost) and added even more crystals and sparkles all around. I tend to be a maximalist cosplayer, so this is my style - as many jewels on the face as possible, ton of wig accessories and reusable details from other suits. It's easier when you have a ton, so if you're going for your first ever cosplay from Genshin, I'd recommend either getting a cheapest possible version(if you're on a budget) and do renovations on your own, OR go for Uwowo and DokiDoki. Uwowo is a bit cheaper if you're living in Europe, and it's much faster than DokiDoki. Just don't order Uwowo from their store at Aliexpress, they are usually 30-40 dollars more expensive there. Genshin is really hard to make on your own, with all tons of details, so you can invest in the wig instead. For wig styling, I just the tiny crimper and a hair straightener, and that's it. Just crimp the wig with tutorials and then decide if you want it to be super fluffy and curly or more canon. I go for curly and fluffy style, since it can cover a lot of imperfections in the wig material, and I cover it even more with accessories. I usually go for non-canon Genshin cosplays from Uwowo and DokiDoki since I don't really like canon designs, so I can only give advice on limited number of characters( I tend to buy every possible costume for the wig that I own, so now I have 5 Kokomi costumes in my closet and another 3 in plans. Also, don't be afraid of using tape!! For my Ganyu cosplays, since I'm barely a B size, I used a lot of push-ups just kinda sticking to the costumes with medical tape, so the costumes would fill up a bit. Also, about the sizes - if you're ordering from a Chinese brand, they tend to be smaller than American/European ones. I'm 47 kg and I usually go for S/M(even though I'm XS in European size) but if you're having doubts, it's better to buy a bit larger and just sew it yourself. Also - petticoats!! You don't have to but a fancy one, just buy some petticoat skirts from party shop, it's literally makes any dress better...and also, please don't forget safety shorts if you're wearing skirts. I was wearing a schoolgirl Kokomi with extremely short skirt while bending over an aerohockey stand and then I didn't understand why there was a line behind me made from teenage boys.... Also - just use lash glue for everything, even if you're sticking something on a wig. It's better than superglur if you want to restyle it later.

「Working on My Very First Miniature Kit!」

Hi, this is a behind-the-scenes on my experience in making the Corner of Happiness: Taste of Life DIY miniature kit!

It was from a couple of years ago, we found a stall selling miniature craft kits while strolling around the mall. My sister bought me the very same model I've been eyeing on my online shopping cart as a birthday present.

Me and my sister both love miniatures since we were very young, but making them from scratch require a lot of time, materials, and tools we don't really have (especially if you don't want them to look crudely made). Luckily, now with a Do-it-yourself kit, that wasn't going to be much of an issue! ...or so I'd hoped as a miniature newbie.

These are all the other variants of this series. I really dig the pink bunny aesthetics they're going for, though it's not as apparent on this one.

The kit also included custom wooden parts, wires, beads, and a tool kit necessary for the build. It also comes with an acrylic glass for dust-free casing!

Most of the parts were made from a print-out glossy paper with all the items' photo-real textures; some of which are just to be pasted onto a harder material like wood shaped similarly to the object, but most of them are just the paper itself.

I guess doing it this way cuts costs for manufacturing, but it was very challenging to work with, in my opinion. You'll see what I mean in a bit.

And here's a preview of the instruction booklet's contents.

I thought it was worded weirdly at parts, but still understandable enough with plenty of visuals to go with it.

Starting with the base/foundation of the model before anything else seemed to be the best option... though I was very, very tempted to skip to work on the food items. I don't know why, but miniature food just gets me really giddy.

But, gotta hold backーcan't make food without the oven and all.

I then worked my way through the biggest parts and set them down permanently with the paste provided in the kit.

...but I probably shouldn't have glued the kitchen island in place before placing the handles...aiyah one of them is really crooked-

I'm not familiar with wirings, so setting up the LED lights made me panic a little. But somehow, it all worked out! I'm confident that if an idiot like me can get through this, so can anyone!!

And now I present to you: The Paper Struggles™

+ and a "It's so fakken small" compilation.

The booklet is a lie lol that knife .jpg is 5x bigger than what you've got to work with-

I remember both bread toasts being squished from the tweezers... thankfully tiny enough for anyone to really see, but there's definitely a shtload of dents on there...

The wire handles for the mug was such a struggle lol it kept falling off no matter what, so I just kept adding glue and just... held on to it with pressure against the bead for what felt like eternity until it dried completely.

I also remember struggling with the semi-origami flowers quite a bit, but I think the trauma of it all made my brain forget to take photos-

Next up are the wires. I never really considered it before this kit, but they can actually have a lot of use when it comes to making miniature furnitures and accessories.

This was unfortunately before I got into making earrings, so I didn't have the right tools (pliers) to straighten them out. The very thin tweezers that came with the kit didn't help that much, so I just had to use my fingers.

The results... are as wobbly as the hands that created them lol I've learned my lesson...

And here we have my favorite partーthe food! All the tiniest of detailing, the garnishing, the arrangements... it just makes me so happy, I really don't understand why.

The original instructions only intended the oranges to be on the chopping board, but not in this household!!!

Oh, and the oranges were sliced up polymer clay rolls that I know are popularly used as nail art? Me and my sister used to sell polymer clay accessories back in the day and it felt very nostalgic seeing those tubes again.

And here we have the finished model! ☆

I made a few changes from the original intended 'look' + added a couple of my own beads from my hoard material collection from childhood I planned on using for when we started making miniatures... and the time for use was most certainly now!

Aaand here's a bird's eye view before completing with the dust-free acrylic glass encasing top lid.

～ CONCLUSION ～

Overall, I thought it was really fun, despite the unforeseeable challenges along the way. Even as a newbie with little to no experience working on actual builds + with only the enthusiasm and love for miniatures to desperately cling to when the damn wires wouldn't stick on their corresponding surfaces properly... it seemed to turn out pretty OK!! I expected a whole lot more screaming and dying inside lol If you're interested in getting it, I think simply searching up "Corner of Happiness" or "Taste of Life DIY miniature kit" should get you some results on your preferred online shopping platform! ※NOTE: I do have to stress to make sure to check (either through other user reviews or the listing's description) if the seller is including a tool kit in your purchase. A lot of the items included in this kit you can probably find at home, but not a lot of people are so crafty to just have them lying aroundーespecially if you're a complete newbie with crafts/miniatures! You'll have a hard time trying to wing it without tools. ※also, they might just skimp on you by not including them, but still have you pay for the full price lol it's definitely worth considering when purchasing.

I know a lot of parents may see these kits to buy for their kids, but unless ➀ they're also helping out the kid in the process or ➁ if the kid in question has no interest or patience for these kind of things, I think it's best not to buy them DIY kits like these if you don't want to risk wasting money. But that's just my opinion, as a broke adult who's always wanted one of these haha

The amount of care, effort, and attention to make sure everything is sturdy enough and visually clean can be very drainingー but if you're willingーanyone can do it!

And of course, a final very cool look on LED lights turned on at night.

This project was done around 2022年. I've done one more miniature kit since then that was way more complex, but that's a whole 'nother journal entry for another day...

TOY PUSSY (2006), Viviane Cardell

Artist creates series in which she questions the asexuality of Barbie dolls

“ The year was 2006, when Viviane Cardell, a visual artist who also trained in Anthropology, launched her first series of idealized vulvas. The collection was presented in Madrid, Spain, and later in São Paulo, in 2009. Since then, works from it have been exhibited in private exhibitions and galleries.

The question raised by the Toy Pussy series goes through the hypersensualization of a consumer object [the doll], which at the same time is a mere hanger for accessories. “when all [the accessories] are removed, and the doll is finally naked, the representation of an asexual woman is revealed, without any sign of a vulva between her legs”, points out the artist.

The series also raises awareness of a model of femininity imbued with an overwhelming symbolic charge and supported by the consumer industry, “which has instilled a fable in children's heads”, according to Cardell. “That, to become a woman, it is essential to obtain new clothes, shoes, houses, furniture, properties, other dolls, a whole world, always”, she explains.

Viviane didn't create her works for children, exactly, but they were conceived because of them. With Toy Pussy “I propose a reflection on the sexual roles imposed by a culture that takes away a healthy awareness of one's own sexuality, treated as taboo, at the same time that it hypersexualizes it, making it vulnerable to all forms of abuse”, she details.

When designing the collection of imaginary vulvas for Barbie, “I idealize a symbolic cure for the mutilated doll, and for the romantic girls who grow up kidnapped by a superficial model of femininity”, aims the artist. The work, according to Cardell, presents a counterpoint to the culture of rigid beauty standards, “especially for women to become 'obedient bodies', an expression coined by Naomi Wolff in her book 'The Myth of Beauty'”, discusses the artist .

Cardell points out that “the news about the exponential growth of cosmetic surgeries on the female genital organ is alarming, with vaginoplasties, labiaplasties and nymphoplasties, with the aim of acquiring a vagina 'delicate like a Barbie', that doll that doesn't have a vagina” .

When presented, the expography reproduces a toy showcase, where the colorful vulvas are inside transparent acrylic boxes with labels, like on toy packaging. The same inspiration involves other details, such as phrases that integrate the boxes and explain the toys. In the case of “Toy Pussies”, subtitles and comical catchphrases with double meanings are translated into several languages.

Using humor, albeit acidic, but also joy, fun, playfulness, the collection points to pleasure as a way of rescuing bodies, whose symbolic castration occurs through a mercantile and patriarchal logic that converts them into objects, susceptible to physical, sexual, aesthetic and emotional violence.

The collection exhibited in 2009, in São Paulo, introduced the thematic series Pussies of the World, which mentioned the genital mutilation practiced in some parts of the world, equating it with the symbolic mutilation of the doll. In addition, it presented the special series Bardot Pussies, created in honor of the actress Brigitte Bardot, a contemporary of Barbie, but an authentic symbol of female sexual liberation.

More than 10 years after the exhibition in São Paulo and after the “#TheDollEvolves” campaign, launched by Mattel (doll manufacturer) in 2016, one would think that Toy Pussy was outdated. However, this campaign, using the concepts of diversity and inclusion, was nothing more than an advertising ploy to stop the drop in sales and expand its market. Through discreet adjustments to the doll's facial features, hair and body shape, the “evolved” Barbie won over new young consumers of all colors, bodies and hair types.

And the original contradictions of this icon persist: the need for accessories, now different and more expensive, and the void between the legs. By understanding the manufacturer's marketing move, Viviane has been working on the new Toy Pussy Evolution collection, in which the artist focuses on issues of plurality. American Girl trademarked Evette's name in November of 2020, so they were already thinking about her character and design well before filing the paperwork. They also trademarked Makena and Maritza in October of the same year, well before Kira was even announced to the public.

Now it's time for me to nerd out about toy/product development because this is a field of work I want to go into:

I couldn't find a timeline for American Girl doll product development, but one Barbie doll takes between 3-18 months to go from development to release. That includes the time to propose, plan, prototype, pilot, manufacture, market, and transport any new Barbie products before they hit shelves. Most Barbies only have one outfit and maybe a couple of uncomplicated accessories to go with them.

Now factor in the time for the rest of an AG doll's collection, all the things that a singular Barbie doesn't have: historical/background research (whether for a modern or historical collection), books, illustrations, extra outfits, extra accessories, furniture, girl-sized clothes, etc. Plus, I imagine that AG had a lot of prototyping to do on the new hair texture that Evette has and possibly on Makena's hair styling. Innovation takes extra time.

Even with Mattel's AG development team working at top speeds, the process would still probably take longer than the roughly 10 months between the reveal of Kira and the release of World By Us.
