The Internet - A Retrospective on the Odd Future Splinter Project
In the early 2010s, Tyler Okonma, or ‘The Creator,’ banded together an experimental hip-hop group of young black artists, naming the group ‘Odd Future.’ While the brand is highly recognizable and respected in today’s world, it was not always this way. This new sound of black artists creating art tailored to the (at the time) dominantly white skate culture led the group to face the discrimination of being called ‘weird’ and ‘gay.’ However, this group persisted in committing to being themselves, serving as an incubation period for many reputable artists we know today. Tracks such as ‘Oldie’ and ‘White’ introduced many of the popular music artists in today’s musical landscape. Odd Future curated the talent for the likes of Tyler, The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, and of course, Frank Ocean.
In 2011, OF members Syd ‘tha Kyd’ and Matt Martians ventured off to create the splinter project dubbed ‘The Internet,’ introducing their discography with the album “Purple Naked Ladies.” Two years later, “Feel Good” introduced Patrick Paige II as the bassist and Christopher Smith as the drummer, tailoring new elements to the foundational sound PNL created. In honing their signature style, they experimented with Raliegh Ritchie in a few remixes such as “Free Fall” and “Stronger than Ever.” Syd stepped up confidently to the role of lead singer, reaping the soothing vocals that represented her undeniable swagger; additionally, her assistance in engineering early 2010s albums such as Goblin by Tyler, the Creator, Doris by Earl Sweatshirt, and Ali by Mike G built up her reputation as a talented music engineer. Paired with Patrick’s admirable bass skills and Matt Martian’s dreamy keyboard presence, the band would come to put out projects establishing their contribution to the new sounds of R&B.
LOVE SONG - 1
This short, simple ballad of a break-up holds a steady beat throughout the piece, with a short verse delivered by Syd. Syd’s soft, yearnful analysis of the state of her affair represents a common struggle of figuring out when to give up on the relationship. What is uncommon about this piece is the signature dreamy keyboard harmony, notably introducing a signature element that would come to identify this new band in future projects to come.
STRONGER THAN EVER - THE INTERNET REMIX
In a remix of several tracks from the Game of Thrones actor Raliegh Ritchie, The Internet brings an electronic buzz to the table that electrifies the heartfelt lyrics of resilience. The echoing of every verse resonates with the notion that the hardships associated with the constant strive to succeed can feel like shouting into a tunnel that lacks a response. Towards the end, Ritchie raises his tone and intensity, reaching a breaking point of feeling lost and alone, revealing he is driven mad by the implication of no resolution. However, the melody, “I fall but when I rise I’ll be stronger than ever,” is repeated to remind him of his resilience that will allow him to persevere. I connect to this song as I too have felt the struggles of reaching success, and like the melody, I have to remind myself what I am capable of to drive myself to succeed.
In 2015, Steve Lacy joined the group as the leading guitarist, graduating high school that same year. Steve’s relationship with the strings represented an incredible symbol of talent, taking inspiration from artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Thundercat, and the Neptunes. Combining these elements into the artistry of The Internet led to the production of the critically acclaimed “Ego Death,” breaking through the R&B world with unheard combinations of funk, jazz, indie rock, and R&B. Tracks such as Get Away and Girl challenged the very idea of what R&B can offer, with Tyler’s feature at the end reminding us of the humble beginnings. Rightfully so, the album was nominated for Best Contemporary Urban Album in 2016, as well as winning two BET awards.
GET AWAY
Lowering the tone to a deep bass sound, this provocative track begins Ego Death with a new concept of what The Internet can produce. Syd’s lyrics make the track portray themes of ostentation, calling on her same-sex affairs to create a unique singing dynamic about a girl in the articulation of an R&B woman singer. The low and slow beat still contains those dreamy elements in every Internet song, with Steve Lacy strumming a soft and light riff during the melody. The bittersweet theme is found in the lyrics of using drugs to escape the worries of committing to a relationship and is reflected accordingly in the instrumentals.
SPECIAL AFFAIR
This irreverent track mimics the sounds of nature; the dark and tense motif continues the character of a heartbreaker embodied by Syd. Syd’s soothing confidence creates a comfortable environment for the listener, while the deep bass lines and light, dreamy elements of Steve Lacy’s riffs continue throughout the track. The lead singer’s presence endures privilege, as the lyrics signify that she’s purely interested in intimacy without feelings. This provocative piece uses the sounds of nature to enhance the track’s tenderness, serving as an excellent nocturnal sound to accompany night drives.
GIRL (w/ KAYTRANADA)
The Internet continues to provide impressive collaborations, as Kaytranada's role of electronic/house producer registers a mesmerizing track that pulses a vibe unheard of. Kaytranada’s trippy yet tender sound paired with Syd’s vocals creates a gentle presence that makes the listener feel at ease. The lully track serves as a testament to the themes of yearning Syd creates, which can be misleading as conceived in previous tracks. The pulsing of the guitar riff alternating in and out of the beat, along with the small balance of bass, comes together to form a contemporary jazz track that few can pull off.
PALACE/CURSE (w/ TYLER, the CREATOR)
Palace/Curse ends Ego Death on a chill note, with Tyler’s accompaniment creating a whimsical ode to the girl. In Palace, a crowd is present to create an atmosphere that gets the listener hyped as if they’re actually in the crowd. The metaphoric Palace Syd sings about refers to the idea of seducing someone into her life of luxury, in accordance to the theme of the album. Transitioning into the low and slow “Curse” creates a feeling of daze, allowing the daydreamy elements of this band to shine. In the repetition of Steve Lacy’s repeating melody, ‘Baby I’m under your curse,’ and Matt Martian’s hypnotizing keyboard element to end the album on a jazzy note, this track entails as the perfect wrap-up of the incredible work that is Ego Death.
In 2018, the band created their last studio album under the name The Internet, dubbed ‘Hive Mind.’ More coverage of talent that Steve Lacy obtained peeked through, allowing the development of a new audience for his solo career. Before the release of this album, several members put out their own solo projects, such as Stevy Lacy’s ‘Demos’ and Syd’s ‘Fin’, alluding to the direction the band would go after the album. This final album serves as a more conscious reflection on the growth of the members throughout the years and the effect that music had on the process.
LA DI DA
Launching with his groovy guitar riffs, La Di Da allows Steve Lacy to shine through his vocals on the melody. Elements of the band’s signature style persist throughout this track, with added elements of funk. The fresh sound transforms into a softer jazz improvisation with a saxophone ending the track.
IT GET’S BETTER (WITH TIME)
If you’ve ever heard the track from Lil Uzi Vert, ‘The Way Life Goes,’ you’ll definitely be reminded of the same message Uzi presented to the listener. This tender track uses a bendy guitar riff to interact with a steady foundation of percussion, to which Syd’s lyricism provides a hopeful message of healing through hard times. Syd’s higher register in this track creates a satisfying comfort to the intended audience and is accompanied by an unexpected conscious verse from ‘Big Rube.’ His message of ‘The easy path rarely leads to what the heart truly desires’ comments on the discomfort required towards the pursuit of happiness. The track ends with a sunny jazz background to accompany a story from bassist Patrick Paige, who ardently explains his struggle with alcoholism and how he persevered through what seemed like a never-ending battle.
Overall, The Internet left an impact on the R&B world leaving a lasting impression. The contemporary elements the unique members contributed honed a signature sound of lulling comfort accompanying passionate and tender lyricism. This splinter project created an outstanding representation of the talent Odd Future would end up making, shaping these artists to be highly respected members of the musical community. While the band may no longer be together, their core values of passion for music bleed through the discography of The Internet, leaving the listener with a concept of how we can use music to truly create an emotional atmosphere.

There's no disputing Snoop Dogg's iconic status.
From that lanky kid from Long Beach in the early 1990s who shot to stardom (and infamy) as the biggest star on Death Row Records, to the venerated elder statesman who might be the most famous rapper in the world; Calvin Broadus is a blueprint for how to do rap stardom the right way.
His early hits set the standard for G-Funk, as Snoop's charisma and laconic drawl made him a superstar and took that Cali-based sound to the top of the charts. He took a turn down South in the late 1990s, signing with No Limit Records for what turned out to be a strong stretch to close the millennium, and he became a pop culture mainstay in the 2000s, scoring monster hits with everyone from Dr. Dre to Timbaland to, perhaps most notably, Pharrell and The Neptunes.
Through it all, he's maintained his near-universal appeal, he's a West Coast icon who isn't bound to any coast; a 90s veteran who transcends era, and a brand and movement unto himself. Snoop is everywhere. We picked 25 of his greatest songs. Believe us—it wasn't easy.
#26
"THAT GIRL" - PHARRELL FEAT. SNOOP DOGG [BONUS SONG]
Our BONUS SONG pick is a celebrated classic guest spot! There are certain artists the superproducer Pharrell just has great chemistry with, and one is the legendary Doggfather. One of the breeziest tunes he ever crafted.
#25
"CALIFORNIA ROLL" FEAT. STEVIE WONDER
Snoop re-embraced AutoTune on this breezy song that sounds like it could be a lost track from Stevie's classic 70s period. The legendary singer/songwriter provides vocals and harmonica to the track.
#24
"LIFE OF DA PARTY"
A West Coast anthem that perfectly captures the club sound of the early 2000s. That specific period after crunk, but before trap found AutoTune and percocets. Too $hort and Mistah FAB do their thing over production from Scoop DeVille.
#23
"SIGNS" FEAT. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND CHARLIE WILSON
Snoop's shift to romantic odes was fairly seamless, and he made it look easy. Grown man Snoop was in full effect on this hit single from R&G: RHYTHM & GANGSTA.

#22
"YOUNG, WILD & FREE" FEAT. BRUNO MARS, WIZ KHALIFA
Snoop has mastered cross-generational appeal, and nowhere is that more evident than his work with Wiz Khalifa. With an assist from Bruno Mars, Snoop proved he's forever young with this single from MAC AND DEVIN GO TO HIGH SCHOOL.
#21
"G'Z UP, HOES DOWN"
This "lost" track was a standout on the immaculate DOGGY STYLE, but only showed up on early pressings of the album. Because of difficulties getting the Isaac Hayes sample cleared (that's "The Look Of Love"), it was removed from the album.
#20
"UPS & DOWNS/BANG OUT"
Over a flip of the Bee Gees' "Love You Inside Out," Snoop gets real about loyalty. R&G: RHYTHM & GANGSTA is one of Snoop's best efforts, and this single is one of the more underappreciated releases from that period.
#19
"SENSUAL SEDUCTION/SEXUAL ERUPTION"
Produced by Shawty Redd, this monster hit single remains one of the biggest smashes Snoop ever released, and featured the Long Beach legend fully embracing AutoTune. One part parody, one part outside-the-box musicality, it's still Snoop being Snoop.
#18
"LET'S GET BLOWN" FEAT. PHARRELL WILLIAMS
Snoop and The Neptunes were locked in by the time they dropped this follow-up to one of the rapper's biggest hits. The coolass vibe is perfect for latter-period, grown man Snoop.
#17
"LODI DODI"
Snoop almost single-handedly legitimized making outright covers in Hip-Hop, with this remake of the Slick Rick/Doug E. Fresh classic "Ladi Dadi." Snoop takes the famous tale straight to Long Beach, and shows just how much he reveres MC Ricky D.
#16
"FROM THA CHUUUCH TO DA PALACE" FEAT. PHARRELL WILLIAMS
The first single from the hit album PAID THE COST TO BE THE BO$$ featured Snoop's first high-profile collaboration with the hitmaking Neptunes. The song wouldn't smash the charts like the single that followed (more on that later), but is one of Snoop's most recognized early 00s tracks.
#15
"STILL A G THANG"
Snoop had landed on No Limit Records in the late 1990s, and he blended with the NOLA label's rat-a-tat bounce better than expected. But this single made it clear that he was keeping his West Coast G-Funk sound, even at his new digs.
#14
"VAPORS"
After his cover of Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick's "La Di, Da Di," Snoop set his sights on a Juice Crew classic. Snoop reworked Biz Markie's beloved "Vapors," showcasing just how well the Golden Age sample of James Brown's "Papa Don't Take No Mess" melded with G-Funk's groove.
#13
"WOOF!" FEAT. C-MURDER, MYSTIKAL
As Death Row seemed to be in a state of collapse circa 1998, Snoop (no longer "Doggy") Dogg resurfaced as a soldier for the No Limit tank. Master P's house welcomed the West Coast superstars with open arms, and this is the kind of posse cut only Beats By The Pound could deliver.
#12
"MURDER WAS THE CASE"
One of the darkest entries on Snoop's classic debut album, this tale finds the protagonist facing death and slipping into his own, personal hell. Part cautionary tale, part reference to the rapper's own real-life drama playing out at the time, it's one of the greatest songs in his catalog.
#11
"DOGGY DOGG WORLD" FEAT. THA DOGG POUND, THE DRAMATICS
The pimptastic video is one of the most memorable of the 90s; and the groove is pure 70s funk, highlighting how deeply indebted to that era G-funk had been.
#10
"DROP IT LIKE IT'S HOT"
Again: Pharrell and Snoop's chemistry has always been undeniable. When you put the VA kid and the D-O-Double G in the studio together, you're likely to get summer classics. It's just a given.
#9
"B*TCH, PLEASE"
A new millennium banger that made it clear to everyone that there was still no more potent combination that Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, this smash single was a precursor to Dre's stellar 2001.
#8
"G'Z & HUSTLAZ"
Opening with that classic classroom skit, and carried by a winning sample from the late, great Bernard Wright, this coulda-been-a-single is one of the best album cuts on DOGGY STYLE.
#7
"WHAT'S MY NAME, PT. 2"
Snoop teamed up with Timbaland for this lead single from his acclaimed final No Limit Records album, THA LAST MEAL. Another song that became one of Snoop's most recognized of the period.
#6
"LAY LOW" FEAT. MASTER P, BUTCH CASSIDY, NATE DOGG, THA EASTSIDAZ
The second single from THE LAST MEAL was another heater featuring Snoop teaming up with Dr. Dre. This time he brought along No Limit boss Master P, as well as his Eastsidaz homies and Butch Cassidy.
#5
"AIN'T NO FUN" FEAT. NATE DOGG, THA DOGG POUND, WARREN G
A classic Death Row posse cut that would probably get banned if it was released today. Yes, it's one of the most problematic songs of all time. But what a banger! Daz ghost-produced this G-funk staple.
#4
"THE SHIZNIT"
It flips the chorus from Billy Joel's "The Stranger" into something new entirely, and this classic track from Snoop's debut album DOGGY STYLE has one of the most sinister grooves in all of G-Funk.
#3
"BEAUTIFUL"
Forever a vibe! It just sounds like warm beaches and cool drinks, surrounded by your favorite people, soaking up the sun. If that doesn't fit your scene, just enjoy the ambience, homie. It works no matter where you are.
#2
"WHO AM I (WHAT'S MY NAME?)"
It's so P-Funk-like, it's like you can hear George Clinton sitting in the room. Nobody would ever have trouble remembering his name again. Shoutout to "Atomic Dog."
#1
"GIN & JUICE"
Another ode to getting drunk as hell, Snoop's second single cemented him as the most unique new voice in the game back in 1994. All these years later, it's a staple of the sound and era, a true G-Funk classic.

Today’s mix:
MTV Party to Go, Volume 8 by Chris Walsh 1995 Hip Hop / G-Funk / R&B
Before Tommy Boy Records went on to define a piece of the 90s by way of a partnership with ESPN to deliver us the stadium dance anthems of Jock Jams, they initially launched into a partnership with MTV in the early 90s to give us a different series called Party to Go. The conceit of it was that each CD or cassette had a ready-made mix that you could just pop in to your player to instantly get a party going. And this is its eighth installment, a DJ mix by an in-house guy at Tommy Boy named Chris Walsh who's also responsible for other mixes in the series.
I reviewed Volume 1 of this series a few months ago and that mix happened to represent what was then a totally confused hodgepodge of what a lot of mainstream American dance music was like back in 1991: hip-house, new jack swing, synthpop, party rap, dance-pop, and some R&B. This volume, though, from late 1995, appears to cast its scope much more narrowly. Besides its incredibly inexplicable inclusion of one of Sheryl Crow's weakest ever singles in the middle (I mean, seriously, what in the fuck?!) and an even more Italian remix of the classic Italo-dance banger, "Rhythm of the Night" by Corona, this album is more or less just a mid-90s top-40 hip hop-oriented mix.
But even though I said that the scope that was cast for this was narrow, it was also, in a way, kind of broad as well, because there's actually hip hop tunes here for different kinds of party atmospheres. Like, I'd say the universal party rap tunes on this mix are undoubtedly Skee-Lo's "I Wish" and Naughty by Nature's "Feel Me Flow." Things like sunshine, cookouts, and swimming pools just immediately come to mind when either of those two songs come on. But then there's songs on here that go with a much chiller type of vibe. Like, you could easily slow-grind on someone with The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Big Poppa," the Puff Daddy mix of Method Man and Mary J. Blige's "I'll Be There for You / You're All I Need to Get By," and the Sting International remix of Shaggy's "Boombastic." Bone Thugs' "1st of tha Month" fits this theme too, even though it's not lyrically sexy or romantic like those other three.
And then there's Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise," the biggest song in the world in 1995 that won so many accolades and also plaudits from critics across the board despite the, uh, lackluster quality of its rapping. It's still a great song that I also happen to love too, but it was funny to see Weird Al take it down a few pegs with "Amish Paradise" and then see Coolio get all huffy about it like some kind of proto-Kanye by saying his beautiful masterpiece had been 'desecrated.' It's a great, classic song, dude, but come on now. For what it's worth, though, Coolio eventually saw the light and cooled off, and his relationship with Weird Al appears to have been cordial for years now.
Anyway, that's more of a party song simply because everyone in the world knows it. It's a big production, but it doesn't really have much of a party vibe to it. It was intended to be a serious song, despite how corny it sounds today. Fool.
Two more things before I sign off here. There's an awesome R&B song on this mix by a female group called Brownstone that appears to have been relatively lost in the sands of time. It went to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was even nominated for a Grammy, but I feel like "If You Love Me" is a pretty big forgotten hit. Other thing is that the back cover of this release comes with a note that says, in kind of big lettering, "*includes exclusive mixes not available on any album." And that actually turns out to be a bit of a reach. What it really sounds like is that Chris Walsh couldn't figure out a way to mix this crop of songs together all that well, so he or someone else just simply constructed little passages of their own to make the transitions as seamless as possible. And those passages are sort of just, like, these little, feeble bridges that were hastily made in order to link each track together. And I definitely wouldn't then advertise this mix as having "exclusive mixes" because of those small, unique sections; I mean, that actually feels like a pretty big sleight of hand to me. But the change from that Brownstone song to the Method Man and Mary J. Blige one is actually *really* smooth.
Anyway, despite its faults, this is still a fun trip down memory lane. Can't really complain about a CD that has Biggie, Naughty by Nature, Skee-Lo, Method Man, Mary J., Coolio, Shaggy, and Bone Thugs on it. It's just not really the type of tunes I think of when I hear the words "party to go." However, if my music diet was restricted to just MTV videos that had been in rotation by 1995, then this might actually be what I'd expect the party to sound like too, since you couldn't really find much in the way of actual dance music on MTV back then, or really ever 🤷‍♂️.
This is a pretty good CD to reach for if you just wanna party with some mid-90s hip hop classics though. I mean, it's a bad DJ mix for sure, but the songs are good, and plenty of people love to get down to 90s hip hop tunes. So, this should do the trick, as long as you immediately hit next when that Sheryl Crow song comes on! 😅
Listen to the full mix here.
Highlights:
The Notorious B.I.G. - "Big Poppa" Naughty by Nature - "Feel Me Flow" Brownstone - "If You Love Me" Method Man and Mary J. Blige - "I'll Be There for You / You're All I Need to Get By (Puff Daddy mix)" Skee-Lo - "I Wish" Corona - "Rhythm of the Night (R.B.X. Euro mix)" Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - "1st of tha Month" Coolio feat. L.V. - "Gangsta's Paradise" Shaggy - "Boombastic (Sting remix)"

Revisiting the Golden Era: Exploring the Legacy of 90s Hip Hop Music
Tumblr media
The 90s were a golden era for hip hop music. The decade saw the emergence of some of the most talented and influential artists in the genre, as well as a proliferation of sub-genres and styles that continue to shape the landscape of hip hop today. From the gritty, socially conscious sounds of Public Enemy and N.W.A. to the smooth, melodic grooves of A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, the 90s were a time of experimentation and innovation in hip hop music.
One of the defining features of 90s hip hop was its focus on social and political issues. This was the era of the Rodney King riots and the LA uprising, and many artists used their music as a platform to speak out against police brutality, racial inequality, and other forms of oppression. Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" and N.W.A.'s "F*** tha Police" were two of the most iconic protest songs of the decade, and helped to inspire a generation of activists and advocates for social justice.
At the same time, 90s hip hop also saw the rise of a more lighthearted, playful style that focused on partying and having a good time. This was the era of groups like Naughty by Nature, Digital Underground, and the Beastie Boys, who blended funky beats, catchy hooks, and irreverent humor to create a new kind of hip hop that was both entertaining and accessible.
One of the most influential groups of the 90s was A Tribe Called Quest, who helped to define the sound of jazz-infused hip hop. Their debut album, "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm," was released in 1990 and featured a unique blend of samples, live instrumentation, and poetic lyrics. Over the course of their career, A Tribe Called Quest would go on to release several classic albums, including "The Low End Theory" and "Midnight Marauders," and would inspire a whole generation of artists with their innovative sound.
Another influential group from the 90s was Wu-Tang Clan, who emerged from Staten Island, New York in 1993 with their debut album, "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)." The album featured a raw, gritty sound that was unlike anything else in hip hop at the time, and was an instant classic. Wu-Tang Clan would go on to release several more acclaimed albums, and would become one of the most influential and respected groups in hip hop history.
The 90s also saw the emergence of a number of talented solo artists, including Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., and Jay-Z. Tupac, who was tragically murdered in 1996, was one of the most gifted and charismatic performers of his generation, and his music continues to resonate with fans around the world. Notorious B.I.G., who was also murdered just a few months after Tupac, was a master storyteller and lyricist, and his album "Ready to Die" is widely considered one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. Jay-Z, who started his career in the mid-90s as a member of the group Roc-A-Fella Records, would go on to become one of the biggest and most successful solo artists in hip hop history.
In addition to these more well-known artists, the 90s also saw the rise of a number of underground and alternative acts, including Mos Def, Common, and The Roots. These artists often took a more experimental approach to hip hop, blending elements of jazz, funk, soul, and rock to create a sound that was both unique and challenging.

Which Era of Hip-Hop is Superior: The 1980s, the 1990s Golden Age, or Current Era Pop Rap?
Tumblr media
The evolution of hip-hop as a genre and cultural movement has been nothing short of phenomenal. Starting from its humble beginnings in the Bronx, New York City, during the late 1970s, hip-hop has grown into a global phenomenon that influences fashion, politics, and of course, music. There are different eras in hip-hop history, each with its unique characteristics, styles, and influential artists.
In this article, we will embark on a critical journey through the primary eras of hip-hop—the foundational years in the 1980s, the much-celebrated 1990s Golden Age, and the current era of pop rap—to explore which one can be considered the most "superior."
The First Era: The 1980s
Characteristics
The first era, the 1980s, is when hip-hop was first commercialized. The genre was raw, and it was during this period that it was introduced to the mainstream through radio and television. Artists like Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, and LL Cool J broke through cultural barriers and made hip-hop a household name. This era defined what we know today as classic hip-hop: heavy beats, DJ scratching, breakdancing, and lyrics focused on storytelling and social commentary.
Cultural Impact
The 1980s were when hip-hop culture began to be recognized as a powerful force for social change. Songs like "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five spoke openly about the struggles of living in impoverished neighborhoods, thus raising awareness about social issues that were often overlooked. The genre was young, full of potential, and unrestricted by commercial pressures.
Legacy
The 1980s are crucial in any discussion about hip-hop’s legacy because they laid the foundations for everything that came after. The basic elements of rap music, from lyrical flow to the role of the DJ, were established during this period. Moreover, the era made hip-hop a viable commercial genre, paving the way for future generations of artists.
The Golden Age: The 1990s
Characteristics
The 1990s is often referred to as the Golden Age of hip-hop, and for a good reason. This era saw an explosion of creativity and innovation. Artists like Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., Nas, and Jay-Z emerged, each with their unique styles. Whether it was Tupac's poetic lyrics or Biggie’s impeccable flow, this era raised the bar on what hip-hop could be. It also saw the rise of sub-genres like G-funk and East Coast vs. West Coast rap, each contributing richly to the tapestry of hip-hop music.
Cultural Impact
The cultural impact of the 1990s was monumental. Hip-hop began influencing fashion, language, and even politics. It was no longer just a genre; it was a lifestyle. During this era, the genre's commercial success soared but not at the expense of its message and creativity. Songs like "Fight the Power" by Public Enemy and Nas’s "If I Ruled the World" showed that hip-hop could be both commercially successful and socially relevant.
Legacy
Many consider the 1990s to be the epitome of what hip-hop can achieve. It was an era where commercial success and artistic integrity coexisted, producing some of the most iconic albums in history, like Tupac's "All Eyez on Me" and Biggie's "Ready to Die."
The Current Era: Pop Rap
Characteristics
The current era is characterized by its fusion of rap with pop, R&B, electronic, and even country elements. Artists like Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Cardi B dominate the charts with songs that are as much about hooks and melodies as they are about lyrical flow. The genre has never been more diverse, featuring everything from mumble rap to socially-conscious rap.
Cultural Impact
The impact of the current era is massive but in a different way than previous eras. Today’s rap is a dominant force on social media, with rappers being some of the most followed celebrities. The genre's influence has spread globally, and it’s not uncommon to hear rap in languages other than English, proving that the genre has universal appeal.
Legacy
It’s too early to fully assess the legacy of this era, but its reach and commercial success are undeniable. It has produced a number of multi-platinum artists and brought hip-hop into the global mainstream like never before.
The Debate: Which Era is Superior?
Authenticity vs. Evolution
Those who argue for the 1980s often point to the era's authenticity and rawness. Similarly, supporters of the 1990s often highlight its perfect blend of commercial success and artistic innovation. The current era, on the other hand, is celebrated for its diversity and global impact, even if it is sometimes criticized for valuing commercial success over artistic integrity.
The Subjectivity of Superiority
The term "superior" is inherently subjective when discussing art. What one person values in hip-hop—whether it’s lyrical complexity, beats, flow, or social relevance—may not be the same for someone else.
Context Matters
It’s essential to recognize that each era was a product of its time, reflecting the social, political, and technological landscape of its respective period. The 1980s laid the groundwork, the 1990s built upon it with unmatched creativity, and the current era is taking it to new, unprecedented heights.
The Verdict
While each era has its merits, the Golden Age of the 1990s often stands out as the most balanced, offering a near-perfect blend of commercial success, social impact, and artistic innovation. However, that's not to discount the significance of other eras. The 1980s gave the genre its initial push, and the current era is redefining its boundaries.
In the end, the "superiority" of an era in hip-hop is subjective and often tied to personal preference and individual experience. What is unquestionable, however, is the genre's enduring impact on global culture, making all eras valuable in their own right.
