I just want to say I still appreciate you for being one of the few people I see and agree with re: Only Friends about Sand being everyone's babygirl and SandRay being everyone's ship. There's A LOT of meta, which I vary in liking, agreeing with, disliking, and not agreeing with, but no matter how many essays are written, I will go down believing a vast majority of the love Sand gets is cause of First and the overwhelming majority of love SandRay gets is cause of FirstKhao. It's the exact same thing that happened with Moonlight Chicken. I'm not even sure people realize they're doing it, but I see it. GMMTV sells "couple merch" & does "couple fan meets, events" which shows to me they're not selling Bad Buddy, or Moonlight Chicken what have you, they're selling OhmNanon and EarthMix and FirstKhao and ForceBook. Contrast that with idk Riverdale, WB doesn't sell Cole/Lilli merch it sells Betty, Jughead merch. Or Squid Game, the merch is for the show itself, you might find Kang Sae-byeok, but you won't find HoYeon Jung (the actress) merch.

This all reminds me more of how kpop companies sell their idols; you buy merch for either the group or individual idol. You buy the BT21 items, or a Jimin blanket etc. And these companies bank on fans loving their idols so deeply they'll buy sixteen albums for the chance of getting such-an-such photocard of their bias member.

The way gmmtv promotes their "acting couples" is very similar to me - right down to the lightsticks even.

I can believe that some fans don't fall into these para-social relationships but it's pretty clear, to me from my observations of gmmtv fandom specifically, that a lot of fans do. The grow found of the actors, and the acting couple which influences how they'll feel about the characters they play to, at the least, a certain extent.

Like, I've seen people say their bias for Khao has influenced their feelings towards Ray. It can even be subconscious. B/c you don't just like Khao or FirstKhao you watch their "contents" of them together, see them being cute, want to support them as a couple, buy their merch or share things about them; that level of investment in them as people is going to effect how you view their work specifically the characters they play. Even more so b/c that's what gmmtv wants.

They knew what they were doing casting EarthMix in Moonlight Chicken even though Earth was a miscast - I stand by this, but someone like Peter Knight should've played Uncle Jim. Earth is to fucking young to play an 'Uncle' convincingly give the man some comedies pls he's so funny.

They knew what they were doing putting two of their most recognizable and popular acting couples (FirstKhao, ForceBook) in Only Friends to offset the "risk" of a high sexual series.

This got away from me but yeah, I don't think all fans feel that para-social connection to the actors, but gmmtv especially wants their audience too. And it absolutely starts to effect how fans engage with the media in question completely b/c they see the actors before they see the characters.

re: my seemingly fringe "I don't think we're meant to think Odin was a dreadful cunt" take, when was Thor 1 actually made? Like... 2010/2011? Because I think Odin is (presumably based on comics canon) meant to be "a bit distant but overall good as a parent" but 2010ish is well after the recent (historically recent, by which I mean since maybe the 1980s) shift in our culture's ideas about fatherhood and what make "a good dad" as well as similarly radical shifts in how we approach disciplining children. MCU!Odin is therefore odd because he's a couple of generations out if he's meant to convince the audience that he's A Good Dad or even an acceptable one. Even the people making the film can't have (all) thought he was any good so with this in mind I'm more open to the idea that Odin is meant to be fairly shit. (But not entirely, and certainly not to the point of him being evil - he's doing his best and arguably the issue isn't him but the culture they've all been born into.)

IDK how old the writer was but there could be an intentional generation-gap thing going on there? An "everyone thinks this is acceptable and even good parenting, but it isn't and everyone involved is getting messed up by it." You don't have to go that far back historically before failing to show regular affection to your kids wouldn't be seen as a significant flaw in a father (whereas it absolutely would be in a mother - v interesting that as the status of women in our society has increased our idea of a good dad has shifted significantly towards an ideal that would previously have been considered "maternal" and thus "unmanly." Oh hey, looks like patriarchy is bad for men too!)

I still think a lot of fanon and fanfic overstates it (which is fine until we're at the point of inventing obviously abusive behaviour and then seemingly forgetting that we made that up), and that Odin is at least meant to be 'doing his best' but yeah Them Thor Films must surely be aware that his best is nowhere near Actually Good, yeah? I mean unless they were written by a man who lives in the 1950s, which they probably weren't. (There is absolutely some generational variation in how far the social change has taken hold but you'd have to look for a long time before you'd find a man of any age who'd say "I really wish my father had been more reserved and had spent less quality time with me" rather than wistfully expressing the opposite of that.)

Cel animation is that thing I use to hate as a kid bc my stupid child brain didn’t like the fact all old Animes or cartoons looked the same until I actually bothered to watch so many old shows to really appreciate it. How even if you can tell they’re all painted, that they all can have unique art styles but also the fact “wait someone had to draw this frame by frame on fucking paper?? Holy shit” And it is a absolute shame because of the tediousness and cost this genre gave its now gone completely.

It’s so sad it can’t be a genre like pixel art in games, where it’s considered outdated as no triple A games do it anymore but is still being kept alive through various indie developers. Cel animation simply because it’s on paper we won’t ever see many projects ever do this unless they are overly ambitious or really wanting to capture an old era. The only thing we have is cuphead and I appreciate it without playing it-I should but it looks hard as fuck💀-but I wish at LEAST we’d get more things where people would animate something digitally but use filtering techniques to make it look like Cel. Which is a thing, apparently for whatever reason The Simpsons tried to hide the fact they switched to digital for a bit so they used certain techniques to still come off as if it was Cel, even if certain things in the animation broke the illusion a bit.

And does this method have the same exact effect as Cel? No, you can still tell it’s digital by small details unless it’s pulled off super well. But is it less costly and more of the way the genre of older animation could come back without the project taking fucking years? Absolutely.

Also, with no disrespect to Charles Martinet, this is a very big thing that is worth talking about and paying him respect, but I wish people would stop acting like he was the only one who was influential to Mario and Luigi. I'm seeing a lot of takes about Mario having "no character" before Charles Martinet.

I know there will be a lot of "video game is the only media that matters ( unless it was made after the 1990's, because suddenly I will start caring about non-video game media then ) who will dismiss this post, but people really need to pay some respect to Captain Lou Albano and Danny Wells.

Luigi was a slightly cowardly, nervous man who would put those feelings aside to do the right thing and had a very deep love for his brother despite occasional squabbles with him LONG before Charles Martinet or Luigi's Mansion came along and I'd argue that Mario's personality as a sweet, child like, food motivated everyman that always wanted to do the right thing in the super show was not all that far off from what he eventually became in the games. Yes. Mario and Luigi sounded different than Martinet's approach, but the personality was there.

Heck, the guy who voiced Wario in the USA commercials for Six Golden Coins and the Wario Land commercials is pretty close to the voice Martinet tried out for Wario in Mario Kart 64, it feels like a mix of that, and his speaking voice in the Wario Ware games.

I'm not trying to downplay the importance of Martinet stepping down at all. I just want people to understand that Mario has been a big franchise even before 1996. The franchise's early years didn't begin and end with a few NES and Arcade games, there were cartoons, comics, movies, musical ice shows, and so much more.
