GW Thoughts: FT Edition

Okay. I’m caving and reading Frozen Teardrops. I read it on Wuxialeague. It’s going to be long so I’m going to put it under a cut. I’m also going to be writing this post as I read it... so it took a long time to write.

Also, when did posting on Tumblr become complicated? Seriously, tagging is easier on mobile because it lets me choose the tags originally used.

Chapter 1: Kathy Po

Okay. I know a little bit about her, mainly that she’s Sally Po’s daughter. Thank you comic I read the other day. So, bonus points. I always liked Sally. Okay, she’s chasing after “Master Chang” who, even though I already know, can only be Wufei. I have a thing about Wufei and Sally. So to have Sally’s daughter off to presumably harass Wufei, bonus points!

Also, of course Wufei is in a frozen wasteland. >.< It fits him. I love Wufei.

Wait, President Dorothy? Like of Preventers or....of the world/universe/whatever her heart chooses? My money is on that last one.

This is reading like... an okay fanfic so far. Like with a bunch of OCs in the gundam world.

Do you mind if I ask about what happened after battlefield of pacifists?

I'm fairly sure I have it in storage but I don't remember it being complete. I think I was under the impression it was a side story they never finished. Did they pick it up in the beginning of FT? I remember my book stopping right after quatre lays out the plan to bluff the kidnapper/terrorists.

It sounds like you have Volume one of BoP before they were compiled into a single volume?

Battlefield of Pacifists ends just before the events of Endless Waltz with the boys (sans Wufei) deciding the new era has no need for Gundams and Wufei deciding his fight is not over.

Ground Zero, Battlefield of Pacifists and Blind Target are all midquels taking place in between the events of the anime and the events of Endless Waltz.

So for a quick timeline it goes:

0: Episode Zero (sans Preventor Epilogue)

1: Anime (sans epilogue) - War ends December AC195

2: Ground Zero - GZ epilogue takes place the day before the animes epilogue

3: Anime Epilogue - April AC196

4: Battlefield of Pacifists

5: Blind Target - ends with Wufei meeting up with Mariamaia and Dekim Barton

6: Endless Waltz

7: Episode Zero Preventor 5 epilogue and Frozen Teardrop Preventor 5 chapters

8: Frozen Teardrop

Frozen Teardrop continues with the Perfect Peace People from BoP (or at least a very similar terrorist group) being antagonists to Relena's idea of peace as well as the talks of humanity advancing further beyond the Earth sphere to other planets. So while not a direct sequel to BoP it is a sequel to the series as a whole.

God I hope we get something official re frozen teardrop translations so things can settle down with that.

I’m still generally confused about what exactly is going on, though posts here have helped clear up a few aspects.

I don’t “hate” it and I do think parts could be fun to play with, but I think it does not help that, for me personally, I just do not care about a new cast of characters. If I’m absorbing Wing material I really only care to focus on the cast we have, and sort of aging them out of the story just isn’t fun for me (maybe I’m missing something idk).

I think FT just leaves me feeling very unsatisfied with what became of the boys. That’s probably a personal thing. I’m glad the initial information going around wasn’t quite right but still, not what I would have hoped for. Duo is an easy example. Again, glad his story isn’t as bad as it originally seemed but it’s still not great. Admittedly I’m an American so I know I’m missing some cultural subtleties but to be fair, if duo is an American character it does seem a little off that he’s colored by Japanese social norms? (The hair thing is a perfect example) Does that make sense? I actually feel that way about Relena’s formality too given that she’s European but I suppose we can write that off as part of her upbringing to some extent. Still feels odd sometimes. Quatre and Trowa being, what, the next gen of scientists feels very weird. Nothing about their lives prior to FT even hinted that they wanted that unless I’m missing information. Wufei does seem to make sense although I did expect more maybe? His character growth was already very limited. I hope there’s more with him than what we’ve seen so far. Definitely need licensed translations so I can see for sure. I think I’ve made my point clear though. I don’t think it’s dumb and I don’t think the writing is “bad” but I do think it’s unsatisfying for me personally, which is why I largely don’t engage with it. Maybe I’ll feel differently when it’s all laid out clearly.

*Tbh the whole evil vaccine thing just feels bad now as a plot device after covid, but I get that this was a thing before that. It’s just unfortunate that it feels really uncomfortable given current events.
