It’s not that long ago that darts was associated with smoke-filled bars, pints and a male dominated crowd that didn’t exactly welcome a wide demographic of fans.

Watching Eric Bristow or Jacky Wilson with a cigarette or a pint as they played promoted a certain image that seems alien to the way the sport is now contested.

It all changed when Barry Hearn, the renowned promoter of snooker and boxing, led a breakaway from the governing body, the British Darts Organisation, to allow players to compete throughout the year and make a living from the sport.

The Circus Tavern venue gave way to Alexandra Palace and a prize fund of £64,000 with a winner’s cheque of £16,000 has risen to £2.5m with 96 players from around the world battling for the winner's £500,000 grand prize.

The format may essentially have remained the same, but the event has taken on its own personality, blending sport and entertainment together with intro music for each player as they walk to the stage.

Darts has changed from being a sport for old men to a spectacle played and watched by a younger crowd, attracting attention from general sports fans over the Festive period in particular, rather than just a regular fanatical crowd, many in fancy dress outfits.

The sport has become progressive too, with Fallon Sherrock flying the flag for female players and beating men in the World Championships on more than one occasion.

No wonder Sky extended their broadcast deal until 2025 when the last contract came close to expiring and after this year’s drama, no one would bet against them extending it again.

That darts caught the imagination of the wider public is down in no small part to Luke Littler, the 16-year-old prodigy who reached the 2024 final having first played when he was only 18 months old.

Perhaps his success shouldn’t have been a surprise, given that he was playing in under-21 competitions when he was just 10.

The unlikely star, who looks older than his teenage years, was a breath of fresh air, joking about his diet of kebabs and pizza and obsession with his Xbox.

He beat former world champions and his idol Raymond van Barneveld on his way to the final to truly announce himself on the world stage.

Sports stars flocked to meet him, including Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison, Arsenal duo Declan Rice and Aaron Ramsdale and, after the final, he visited his beloved Manchester United, who introduced him to legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Because of Littler, darts became front-page news, the talk of every UK television news show, and the 2024 World Darts Championship enjoyed record-breaking viewing figures thanks to Littler's fairy-tale.

His semi-final against Rob Cross averaged 1.79m viewers with a peak of 2.32m viewers, up by 40 per cent on the previous overall record and for the final that rose to a total audience of 4.8m viewers – the highest-ever non-football audience for Sky Sports.

Darts even dominated social media with Instagram seeing 11.8m video views and 10.2m total reach on Facebook. The Sky Sports website and app also saw 2.44m follow the live blog, up 307 per cent compared to last year’s final’s 648,000.

Sky Sports Darts' Wayne Mardle, who knows a thing or two about the sport, believes that Littler is the real deal.

He said: “I can't remember someone going up there with such a swagger and just banging in 180s and hitting 11 and 12-darters like they are going out of fashion.

"I'm a darts fan first and foremost, I was watching it and I had goosebumps watching him. I love people achieving and that was a boy achieving something on the world stage.”

UK-based global darts retailer, Darts Corner's managing director Craig Heenighan underlined how this year’s World Championships have had an impact on the sport as a whole.

He said: "Luke Littler's performance has captured the hearts of the nation. It's clearly had had a huge impact. It's not often that darts is on every radio station and on the back of every newspaper.

“If you think of elite-level sports, what 16-year-old could compete and make it to the final and have a have a really strong chance of winning?

"And it's not as though he's scraped through, he's been quite convincing in the wins he's had. I also just think it's probably the way he's gone about it. He doesn't look overawed. He's got a huge amount of composure. He seems very at home on stage, which is incredible for a 16-year-old.

"I think with the younger boys and girls around the country, looking at Luke, at the age of 16.... We've all seen the videos on TV of him playing (darts) in his nappy at 18 months old.

"I think that (says to) a new generation that darts is actually quite cool. And (they think): 'I could be quite good at darts.' And I think it just breathes new life, perhaps, into a new generation looking at the sport."

It’s not just the teenage sensation that caught the headlines though.

In a sport where opponents respect each other and promote the positive atmosphere created by the excitable crowd, a word too for the eventual winner this year, ‘Cool Hand Luke’ Humphries, who, despite ensuring no fairytale ending for Littler, did a great deal for the sport himself over the course of the event.

In a sport where machismo was once taken for granted, Humphries made no secret of his battles with anxiety but has overcome the challenges and lost some weight which has also benefited his performances.

In the post-match press conference, Humphries added that speaking openly about his troubles "definitely helped me because it was a weight off my shoulders".

"I'm not the only sportsman in the world who goes through it," he continued.

"I'm definitely not the only person in this room that goes through it. I was very open and honest about it because it was affecting my career and it was hard to hold it in.

"There have been lots of people on social media who've said 'You've really inspired me and helped me'. That makes me feel great. I didn't do it because of that. I did it because I wanted to be open and honest. All of a sudden I had celebrities and sports stars that messaged me and said that they go through the same."

Humphries, also praised the impact Littler has had and said: “I’m not just saying this because it will please everyone, but Luke has been an unbelievable talent. He has been fantastic with all the media that has come about with him and he took the defeat so well. He’s one of the best players in the world, there is no doubt about that.”

Humphries vowed to give some of his prize money to his local club as well as Prostate Cancer UK, who had already been pledged more than £900,000 after sponsor Paddy Power promised to donate £1,000 for every 180 that was landed, 914 in total.

"I'll donate a bit myself from the prize money. It's very, very close to my heart. My father-in-law, who has battled prostate cancer, went and got checked out. He's found it early.”

While there have been reports of pubs and clubs closing, reducing the access to darts by those who do not wish to play at home, organisations such as Flight Club can attract a Gen Z crowd.

With more than a dozen locations in the UK and venues in the US and Australia, they feature hi-tech booths with pumping tunes that also serve brunch and cocktails and interactive screens to allow groups to play different games.

Littler went one step further at the Bahrain Masters final later in January, hitting a nine-dart finish as he beat Michael van Gerwen 8-5 to secure his first senior PDC title.

It will be fascinating to see if Littler’s rise has a lasting effect on the popularity of darts but you wouldn’t want to bet against it after the excitement and focus this year’s World Championships attracted.

MISS – COLIN GRAVES

Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) has a reputation as one of the most well-regarded clubs in England, having won over 30 County Championship titles.

But the Club has been marred by scandal in recent years and rocked by financial uncertainty that threatens its very existence.

While Colin Graves was first Chairman of the 160-year-old Club, from 2012 to 2015, the Club faced accusations of institutional racism, culminating in a complaint from captain Azeem Rafiq and later from others, resulting in a high profile investigation.

While the scandal was unfolding, Graves had an opportunity to take a stand and ensure those who were guilty were punished and safeguards put in place to ensure nothing like that happened again.

Rafiq’s claims painted a sorry picture of the abuse he and others had suffered.

The Club appeared to reluctantly concede only that Rafiq had been “the victim of inappropriate behaviour” while Graves attempted to dismiss these claims of racist language as mere “banter”, and was understandably roundly condemned for his response.

In late 2021, the Club released a statement concluding that “there is no conduct or action taken by any […] players or Executives that warrants disciplinary action”.

Yorkshire refused to send “anyone with executive authority to give evidence” to a parliamentary committee on the subject, while refusing to publish its internal report on the investigation into racism allegations.

When the report was published, it sent shockwaves through the Club and wider cricketing family, exposing a culture of racism that had long gone unpunished.

Yorkshire lost the right to host international games, was fined £400,000, and was docked 48 points from the 2023 County Championship, while many senior staff were sacked.

Sponsors understandably distanced themselves from the Club, including ground sponsor Emerald Publishing, creating financial issues that still afflict it today. The suspension of international games hosted at Headingley is estimated to have cost the club and surrounding area as much as £2,5m per game.

On top of the fine, the Chief Executive, Director of Cricket, and Head of Human Resources were all released, along with £3-4m.

After bungling their initial reaction, in August 2021, Yorkshire released a statement apologising to Rafiq and just over two years later, in October 2023, the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation released another statement apologising for racist behaviour.

Yorkshire’s increasingly difficult financial plight led to seeking investment from the Middle East to help address its financial challenges.

The situation got so bad that late last year, it transpired that the club was relying on support for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to help pay staff wages.

There were reports that the heating had broken down at Headingley and that former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley was planning on buying the famous ground.

When Ashley’s bid failed to materialise, it was hardly a surprise when Graves was confirmed as the only viable option to help the club get back on its feet.

A statement from the Club said: “The Board of Yorkshire County Cricket Club has tonight agreed to recommend the loan agreement from Mr Colin Graves.”

The former Chairman then told talkSport: “The ball is in the Yorkshire board’s court to make a decision, but my interest is real, it’s absolute, and that’s for one reason and one reason only, and it’s to save Yorkshire County Cricket Club. None of us wants to see that institution disappear.

“It’s not in a good place so from my point of view that’s the reason I’m doing this. I’m passionate about the place and I want to make sure that Yorkshire County Cricket Club survives and prospers.”

Understandably, Rafiq has sharply criticised Graves’ return and said: “There is a sense of sadness, a bit of anger. The message it clearly sends out is cricket is not a place that is safe for people like me: people from South Asian communities or people of colour.

“We have ended right back where we started. Nothing has changed. All we have had are empty words and broken promises. Now a man who has always seemed to minimise the club’s problems, a man who last June went on television and dismissed racism as “banter”, a man whose family trust was described as a “roadblock” to reform, is likely to return to Headingley as chairman. So where is the outcry now? Where are the interventions?”

Earlier this year, Graves released a further statement apologising to the racism victims: “I apologise personally and unreservedly to anyone who experienced any form of racism at Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Discrimination or abuse based on race, ethnicity or any other protected characteristic is not and never will be acceptable.

“I profoundly regret some of the language I used when asked about the events that took place when I was Chairman, at a time when I was no longer at the club. I understand and sympathise with those who regarded my comments as dismissive or uncaring.”

Local MP, Alex Sobell, made a plea for alternative investors and said:  "Yorkshire County Cricket Club has admitted the racism prevalent at the club exposed by the brave testimony of Azeem Rafiq and rightly set up a whistleblowing helpline and investigation into the cases raised.

"Mr Graves has dismissed what the club has admitted, describing it as banter. I am very concerned that we would lose the progress we have made under a return by Mr Graves and would need not just a statement recanting his views but full commitment to create a club for the whole community."

Clive Efford MP, a member of the Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) select Committee, said Graves' return to the club would be "a disaster" while its Chair, Dame Caroline Dinenage MP, invited Graves to give evidence to the committee in February, adding that his return "undermines" the progress that Yorkshire has made so far.

"The disgraceful treatment of Azeem Rafiq by Yorkshire CCC was the tip of the iceberg, with racism, classism, sexism and misogyny found to be entrenched across the sport," Dinenage said in a statement.

"The publication of the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket's report last year offered a turning point for English cricket, which the ECB appears to be taking.

"The return of Colin Graves to Yorkshire and to English cricket risks undermining what progress has been made so far.

"The Culture, Media and Sport Committee will be watching closely as this deal progresses, so that the terrible past of Yorkshire CCC does not repeat itself."

Charity Sporting Equals also criticised the plan and stated: “The potential reinstatement of Colin Graves as Chairman of Yorkshire County Cricket Club would undermine the progress made.

“His reinstatement would send a message that emboldens those who perpetuate the myth that racism is simply banter, that it is enough to pay lip service to policies and procedures. It would make a mockery of the suffering of ethnically diverse players across the country. It would be a rejection of the ICEC Report’s thorough investigation and well considered conclusions.“

The Club was then forced to refute accusations that it had dismissed other potential investors in preference to Graves’ return. "Yorkshire County Cricket Club and agents acting on our behalf have met with over 350 interested parties to work through the validity of each and every genuine offer to refinance the club.

"No stone has been left unturned and a thorough and rigorous process has been conducted by the board to ensure the club stays operational for the benefit of its members, creditors and employees. We refute any assertion to the contrary.”

There is no doubt that if Graves does ratify his bid for the Club, it will prove to be an unwanted sideshow and raise further questions about English cricket’s commitment to tackling racism.

Whether sponsors remain with the club or depart to disassociate themselves from the controversy remains to be seen, potentially plunging the Club into further financial difficulties.

Some are said to be reviewing the situation and Rafiq asked others to do the same:

"My question now is for Yorkshire's current sponsors… Does Colin Graves reflect your values? Is it acceptable to describe racism as banter?

"Sponsors found their moral compass before, and they need to find it again, because any organisation supporting this is complicit in it. There is still time for them to act, to leave now and stop Yorkshire stepping back in time and undoing what progress they have made in the past three years."

YCCC has now confirmed that Graves will return, passing the vote with an 88% majority, a huge endorsement from the Club members.

How far Graves goes in accepting his mistakes and ensuring progress continues to be made in the fight against racism may well determine whether the Club can move on from one of the biggest challenges it has ever faced.

1. Which team is ‘your team’?

I follow a couple of teams across a variety of leagues. I've been following Gillingham for nearly 30 years after being taken to a game by my dad and granddad in the mid 90s - having a professional team just half an hour away was handy, and it earned me a grudging respect from (some) fans of Premier League teams that I'd follow my then-local team rather than a big club. It even inspired my long-term username - Jamesthegill is a contraction of "JamestheGillinghamfan" when that proved to be too long a name for an internet forum to handle.

Gillingham didn't have a women's team, so when I got into that side of the game I had no club loyalties to transfer across. This meant that when I was amazed by the German number 22 popping up all over the pitch in their first game, I had no qualms about following her club career further. This started me following Turbine Potsdam, where I could - if you think it's tricky watching the Frauen Bundesliga today, it's much easier than it was seven years ago - and then when she moved to England in 2018, I started following Arsenal WFC as well. Despite her sad retirement, I've had so much fun watching Miedema, Maanum, Cerci and Höbinger that they're still the teams I cheer on.

4. Who is your favourite player currently playing for your team?

Viv for Arsenal, Cerci for Potsdam and it's tricky for Gillingham, as I've been on a three year sabbatical from supporting them (they had a manager who I could not, in good conscience, cheer for - so I took some time away from the club. He got fired two weeks ago, so I'm unfamiliar with the squad!)

20. Is your team’s social media management any good? Why?

Arsenal's is second to none in my experience - having the social media team of a top 6 Premier League club behind them is paying dividends, and we're never starved for content. Gillingham's is pretty good for the level they're at, but I've won two different editions of Football Manager through their social media competitions so I'm slightly biased there!

Potsdam's is atrocious and indicative of the mismanagement of the club itself. For a start the Facebook page is geolocked to Germans only. Twitter and Instagram are slowly picking up but are nothing in comparison to other FBL clubs. Given that a) Turbine are the most successful East German football club and b) an established independent women's club (i.e. not riding the coattails of a men's club) they really have a unique selling point that they're not capitalising on.

30. Do you like your team’s crest?

Gillingham's crest is not overly complicated without being too simplistic - the black and white stripes on the left hark back to the first kit the club played in, as New Brompton FC, and the Kentish Invicta horse is a nice local link - especially with the "Gills" detailing in the mane. It was better when the crest included the club's Latin motto of "Domus Clamantium" ("Home of the shouting men") underneath.

Arsenal's crest looks like a cheap knockoff from a football game that couldn't afford the proper rights.

Turbine's crest has the same local link as Gillingham's (this time with an eagle from the badge of the state of Brandenburg) and the six stars could refer to the six Bundesliga titles won, or the six Oberliga (East German league) wins. The "TP" in the lower right quadrant feels like a placeholder that was accidentally left in, though!

Flashback: Unabomber Publishes His ‘Manifesto’

Ted Kaczynski was a madman who killed and maimed innocent people – but did some of his worries for the future come true?

By 2017 standards, a bearded man ranting in his manifesto about how “one of the most widespread manifestations of the craziness of our world is leftism” might, at best, have a chance ending up name-checked by Alex Jones. After over a decade spent living as a recluse without electricity or running water in a cabin in Montana – sending mail bombs to university academics and corporate airline executives – Kaczynski sent letters to the New York Times and the Washington Post demanding they publish his manifesto and agree to print an annual follow-up for three years. If they did, the bombings would cease. If not, the Unabomber hinted at more bombings to come. 

It had started in May of 1978, when a package exploded and injured a Northwestern University security officer. A year later, another bomb was sent to the same college, injuring a graduate student. Also in 1979, Kaczynski snuck a bomb into the cargo hold of an American Airlines flight. It went off mid-flight, causing an emergency landing and afflicting 12 passengers with smoke inhalation. In 1985, he switched things up, and sent a shrapnel-loaded bomb to a computer store in Sacramento, California, claiming the owner as his first victim. By the mid-1980s, the Unabomber had become a real-life American boogeyman. A killer who would strike without warning, and without much reason. Why was he doing what he did – and when would he do it again?

The publication of the manifesto would end up being his undoing. Members of Kaczynski’s family had a slight suspicion Ted could be the person behind the terror campaign. His brother David was one of the thousands of people who called the FBI tip-line after the manifesto was published and a million-dollar reward was offered for information leading to the capture of the Unabomber. After a long search, FBI agents arrested an unkempt Kaczynski in his Lincoln, Montana cabin on April 3rd, 1996. They found bomb making components, over 40,000 journal pages and the manifesto’s original typed manuscript.

There’s no defending the actions of a person who mails bombs with the intent to do serious harm. But Andrew Sodroski, executive producer of the new Discovery mini-series, Manhunt: Unabomber, thinks there is plenty to take away from Kaczynski’s words. As he said in a phone conference with reporters leading up to the show, “What the manifesto has to say about our relationship with technology and with society is more true right now than it was when Ted published it.”

Not many domestic terrorists convicted of murder get called prophetic by television producers – and there are scholars from different sides of the political spectrum who agree that the the Unabomber’s anti-technology stance was ahead of its time. “His work, despite his deeds,” wrote Dr. Keith Ablow, a psychiatrist and member of the Fox News Medical A-Team, “deserves a place alongside Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, and 1984, by George Orwell.” Ray Kurzweil, noted author, computer scientist and futurist, quoted a passage from the manifesto in his 1999 book, The Age of Spiritual Machines. Some believe he’s a murderous modern-day Henry David Thoreau, while others say he’s a genius and a prophet. So what, exactly did he get right?

Kaczynski opens his manifesto with, “The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.” The technology he goes on to rail against, keep in mind, was mid-1990s – before smartphones, before Twitter, before “Likes” on Facebook and algorithms helped pick out things for you to buy and experience. Although the word “dystopia” never shows up throughout the essay, Kaczynski believed (and you have to assume still does so from his prison cell) that the future wasn’t some Philip K. Dick or Handmaid’s Tale scenario; the dystopian future started happening a long time ago. Computer networks, the mass-communication media, the modern health care system, pesticides and chemicals, all products of the Industrial Revolution, are destroying the planet, he writes. As one portion of the manifesto is sub-titled, “The ‘Bad’ Parts of Technology Cannot be Separated From the ‘Good’ Parts.” 

In point number 49 the manifesto, Kaczynski writes, “In the modern world it is human society that dominates nature rather than the other way around, and modern society changes very rapidly owing to technological change.” One of the big problems, he believed while writing his manifesto, was the inevitable growth of artificial intelligence and how humanity will cope with it. “First let us postulate that the computer scientists succeed in developing intelligent machines that can do all things better than human beings can do them.” As one Wired article explained in 2015, “A manufacturing device from Universal Robots doesn’t just solder, paint, screw, glue, and grasp – it builds new parts for itself on the fly when they wear out or bust.” From checking you out at the grocery store to flipping burgers, robots are being designed to integrate into the labor force and cut costs.

He goes on to write in point number 172, “In that case presumably all work will be done by vast, highly organized systems of machines and no human effort will be necessary. Either of two cases might occur. The machines might be permitted to make all of their own decisions without human oversight, or else human control over the machines might be retained.” When Kaczynski’s thoughts were published, we were still dealing with the Terminator version of the robots overtaking humanity and destroying it – it was a nightmare scenario, fiction. But Kaczynski wasn’t writing speculative fiction; he was stating, from an academically-trained point of view, where he saw technology headed.

Technology overtaking humanity was only one of the scary possibilities. The rise of the “one percent” super rich and corporations controlling everything, was another. “Human freedom mostly will have vanished, because individuals and small groups will be impotent vis-a-vis large organizations armed with supertechnology and an arsenal of advanced psychological and biological tools for manipulating human beings, besides instruments of surveillance and physical coercion,” he wrote. 

Tech companies have untold amounts of data on every person that logs online for everything from shopping for cat litter to ranting on Twitter. How to understand that data – and what to use it for – is an industry in itself. Could it be used to manipulate us? See the 2016 U.S. election and the rise of fake news spread through Facebook. “Hyperpartisan Facebook Pages Are Publishing False And Misleading Information At An Alarming Rate,” as one 2016 BuzzFeed article put it, showed up in feeds even if the people didn’t follow those groups. Some of the false news was spread the old-fashioned way, through word of mouth; but, as John Herman of the New York Times explained, misinformation on the social media service thrives or dies, “at least in part, on Facebook’s algorithm.” As Kaczynski believes, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. All of this seemed farfetched when Kaczynski’s words were put in front of a mass audience. In 1994, audiences were being told suave cyberterrorists like the ones in the movie The Net were the ones looking to steal your information online and do whatever they please with it.

After all this, however, calling Kaczynski a prophet might be a stretch. He’s a highly intelligent person who wanted to try and stop where he saw humanity headed by any means necessary – including murdering people. Yet he routinely points out throughout his manifesto that there very well might be no stopping the inevitable. The entire point of his manifesto, as he states, is revolution, anarchy: “Its object will be to overthrow not governments but the economic and technological basis of the present society.” Kaczynski, who has stated admiration for the eco-anarchist movement (“but I think they could do it better,” he also said in an interview in 1999), takes aim at both leftists, including “socialists, collectivists, ‘politically correct’ types, feminists, gay and disability activists, animal rights activists and the like”). He also writes, “conservatives are fools,” and that they’re, “just taking the average man for a sucker, exploiting his resentment of Big Government to promote the power of Big Business.” Kaczynski even engages in some gaslighting: “Feminists are desperately anxious to prove that women are as strong and as capable as men. Clearly they are nagged by a fear that women may NOT be as strong and as capable as men.”

All of this reiterates the point that Kaczynski is no hero whatsoever. The person who wrote “Industrial Society and Its Future,” is a fanatic. And as is sometimes the case, fanatics can take things to the tragic extreme. Yet there is something to be taken away from his words if you read closely; it’s that we give up a piece of ourselves whenever we adjust to conform to society’s standards. That, and we’re too plugged in. We’re letting technology take over our lives, willingly. It’s the sort of thing that doesn’t take a madman dressed up like a prophet to tell us; it’s all too evident. Kaczynski, to steal a phrase from the tech world, was just an early adopter of these thoughts. Yet his warning will probably forever go unnoticed because of the horrific deeds he carried out to get his message across.

Sunday's big match will be between Roma and Milan. Since it's the Big One, it will be broadcast on Sky Sport Serie A. The game will be played at 12:30 CET (6:00 am EST / 3:00 AM PST). It will also be streamed live on the AS Roma Twitter accounts as well, and on Periscope.  The other big game on Sunday will be contested between Fiorentina and their crosstown rivals, Florentia (San Gimignano). Fiorentina will have to recover from a tough loss against Arsenal rather quickly, as they find themselves playing a derby with their crosstown rivals in their first match of the season. (It's definitely a rough start to the calendar for them, for sure.) The game will be played at 3.00 pm CET (9:00 EST / 6:00 am PST). Both Fiorentina and Florentia will most likely stream their games on Facebook, and in Fiorentina's case, the Viola Channel as well. 

Other things to note: Serie A Femminile has 12 teams. Two of them are newly promoted, with the two being Inter and Empoli, respectively. Both Orobica and Pink Bari were supposed to have been relegated last season, but after both Atalanta Mozzanica and Chievo Verona Valpolicella collapsed, due to a lack of structural and financial support, the two teams were kept in Serie A as a precautionary measure. Both Atalanta and Chievo are two cautionary tales about how fragile the state of women’s football in Italy can be, and how the system needs to be reformed so that other clubs won’t face similar collapses. It’s one of the issues that faces the country as they seek to professionalize the women’s game, and it’s why a ‘sustainable professionalism’ is needed for the women.

EPL Summary - Gameweek 2 (2018-19)

So another week telling us a little more about all the teams. Let’s get right into it starting again with the title chasers.

Title Chasers

This week saw another of the top 6 lose a game, with now only Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham keeping pace with the new benchmark set by Manchester City. They really lay down the gauntlet with a 6-1 thrashing of Huddersfield while Tottenham and Liverpool got the job done in tricky encounters against Fulham and Crystal Palace respectively.

Meanwhile, a London derby we haven’t had in a while, a 5 goal thriller settled a tense affair at Stamford Bridge where Chelsea eventually came out on top. After being 2 goals down, Arsenal fought back to equalise and went into the break all square at 2-2. Unfortunately for them they ran out of legs and were overcome by a Chelsea side who seems to have converted to a much more attacking set up that under recent managers. Positive signs for Arsenal despite no points after their first two fixtures. Some are pointing to this being an early exit for the new manager, which personally I think is ridiculous. I expect Arsenal to pick up momentum as the season goes on and go onto bigger and better things. While not putting them to have a run at the title this season, I expect them to begin the road to redemption, which I assure you as a Liverpool fan is a long and hard one. Chelsea on the other hand have alarm bells ringing after allowing Arsenal to waltz through their midfield as they did on the weekend. We’ll see how they hold up at the end of September in their next top 6 clash: Liverpool at the bridge. Every top 6 team seems to be playing Liverpool after a stretch of easier fixtures…

Speaking of long and hard roads! Manchester United was met with another speed bump as they fell to Brighton 3-2. At least they’re consistent with their scoring, a penalty and close range goal in both their opening fixtures, but that defence needs sorting. One can only imagine the impact the World Cup has had on their backline, and it will surely get better as the season goes on. Just as long as they don’t implode before that happens…

Battle for Europe

Everton and Leicester got back on the winning trail. Leicester at the cost of Jaimie Vardy to a late red but all the same, they’re up and running with wins against Southampton and Wolves respectively. Burnley weren’t quite so fortunate, going down at home to a very promising Watford side and Bournemouth also turning heads to start the season with two wins. Still early days, but the early signs are that we’re going to have some new teams in the mix for that coveted (despite its constant denigration) Europa League spot. The rest have started indifferently…

Mid-Table and Relegation

The battle at the bottom currently has all the new sides for the first time in a long time but the prime candidate is Huddersfield. Sure, they had a tough start to the season, like Arsenal having to play Chelsea and Manchester City, but they’ve shipped 9 goals in the process, having only scored one. Worrying signs indeed… West Hame aren’t far behind them, following up their thrashing by Liverpool with a ‘come-from-the-front’ loss at home against Bournemouth. Certainly wasn’t expecting that one. Also troubling signs for West Ham as they need to find ways to score goals and well, stop shipping them too. Two clubs to keep a close eye on for relegation if they don’t change things around.

My third candidate is Cardiff City. Promoted on the back of excellent home form, games at home to Newcastle are the ones you need to win. Newcastle looked fairly comfortable in that one, even when they went down to 10 men late in the second half. They almost got away with all 3 points in the end, if only Kenedy was as good at penalties as he was with his feet. Was absolutely gobsmacked when I saw him take that pen. Not sure he’ll be taking the next one.

It’s still a big rat race regardless, so once again we’ll know a little bit more in the weeks to come.

Summary

So overall, we’ve got City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham leading the way with Watford throwing their name in the hat early on for at least a Europa berth. Arsenal yet to register a point but signs are promising and United need to get the ball rolling still after a loss as early as day 2. Meanwhile, Everton and Leicester got their win tally started and the rat race for mid table safety currently has our prime candidates of Huddersfield, West Ham and Cardiff for the drop – but there’s time to fix it all. The big fixture this week will obviously be the juicy clash at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Tottenham. Tottenham a chance to inflict another early wound onto United and a chance for United to make up ground on the leading pack. Elsewhere, Huddersfield and Cardiff will stake their claim for survivorship, while West Ham and Arsenal will see each other as the perfect opportunity to get points on the board. My prediction is Arsenal to come out on top…

Southampton trying to regain their mid table status against Europa hopefuls Leicester, while Everton travel to the dangerous looking Bournemouth. Watford play Crystal Palace so we’re going to know a lot more about who’s a chance for Europe and who’s going to be fending off advances from the relegation 3. The rest is just a mix of fixtures, good luck to Chelsea, City and Liverpool’s oponents. They’re in for a rough ride… That’s it for this week though! Inspired by player-business partnerships of yesteryear, members of the Arsenal men’s and women’s teams, past and present, have been paired with local businesses to raise awareness of their services and drive footfall on and around matchday in a campaign called ‘Arsenal Supporting Supporters’.

The first video featured defender Rob Holding buying a (soft) drink at the famous Arsenal pub The Tollington Arms, which has had a close link to the club since it first opened at around the same time as the new stadium.

Next was the now-departed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, known for his love of cars, visiting the local Autoparts garage with owner John Selby saying: “Just to be on Arsenal’s Facebook page and Instagram was great exposure. Most businesses could never dream of something like this. I keep saying it, but it’s like a lottery win.”

Emile Smith-Rowe, whose hair always looks immaculate, featured in a film with JNF Haircutters in Finsbury Park, with owner Jimmy Patsalou commenting: “What Arsenal has done for us was amazing. It’s not just for us, it is for the whole of this area. During the last year we all had to close – it was only a couple of businesses who were open.

“Hopefully, now we are all back up and running, this help from Arsenal won’t just help bring people to us, it will bring people to the area as well.”

The latest film, which launched last week, featured charismatic goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, with a play on a popular, x-rated chant usually levelled at the keeper, and which Ramsdale reacted to in his usual jovial manner when Arsenal faced Leicester City earlier in the season.

“The Chip Inn has been there for 60 years, it’s a big part of the community and I think it was really important that it managed to survive the pandemic and now, what Arsenal are providing for us, will hopefully help us as we come out of this situation stronger,” owner Murat Gokmen said.

With Premier League fans now a global audience, it would be easy to forget the local fans and the businesses that support their neighbourhood communities.

“This is one of a number of ways we are supporting the local community,” said Arsenal CEO, Vinai Venkatesham.

“After listening to the local businesses involved, it was clear there was one thing in particular they needed – awareness. So we got to work on creating a series of adverts in partnership with them which will hopefully ensure every Arsenal fan knows who they are and how they can use the brilliant services they offer.”

By investing in this campaign, which includes matchday programme and in-stadium advertising that small businesses could never normally afford, Arsenal have shown their recognition of the importance of engaging with fans authentically, a bond which was damaged by the ESL debacle last year.

Arsenal Vision podcast regular Clive Palmer, who does the voiceovers at the end of each film, summed it up when he commented: “What I like about it is it’s not Arsenal pushing themselves forward. They’re pushing the businesses forward.

“What’s a definition of a football club? You need to feel connected to it and you need to feel like you’re all part of the same team. And I think the club (is)…starting to appreciate it a lot more due to the fact that we were kept separate from each other. When you’re kept separate, you think hang on a minute we can’t take each other for granted.”

MISS – FIFA

There have been concerns about sportswashing by states such as Russia and high profile individuals within them, for years, using the power of sports events and clubs to legitimise and promote nations in a way traditional diplomacy cannot muster.

For sports-mad Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games and 2018 FIFA World Cup have provided opportunities to bathe in the glory of global sports events and enhance Russia’s national identity.

The disconnect is that Russia has been excluded as a nation from many sporting events because of systemic state doping, with its athletes forced to compete under another banner.

The invasion of Ukraine has further underlined the need for firm action to exclude Russia and its athletes, coaches and clubs from international sporting competition, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and FIFA coming under criticism for not taking firm and decisive action early on.

FIFA in particular remained quiet, giving the impression that Infantino wanted to avoid punishing Russia given his connection to President Putin.

It is, after all, only a few years ago Infantino was at the Kremlin postulating that the world was in love with Russia and he was later presented with a Russian state Order of Friendship medal.

In a remote press conference days after Russia’s aggression, FIFA President Gianni was asked by Associated Press Global Sports Correspondent Rob Harris if he planned to retain the Order of Friendship medal.

The FIFA president was further questioned on whether he held any regrets about praising the Russian leader so strongly in recent years, especially when the initial incursion of Ukraine happened in 2014, with the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation.

Infantino answered: “We are constantly reflecting on the role of sport, in particular the role of sport in trying to bring people together in a peaceful environment. Even people, countries who don’t have relations with each other or who are in a conflict with each other. This is a constant in our thinking and I firmly believe in sport to bring people together.

“Football is the people’s sport as well. It’s not about individuals, it’s about all the people from all over the world and honestly if we had this press conference yesterday I might say something else, but today my thoughts are really on all the people who are really affected by this escalating conflict and nothing else.”

Belatedly, FIFA, in coordination with UEFA, imposed measures on Russia, banning Russian flags and anthems and forcing them to compete away from home under the name ‘Football Union of Russia’ (RFU).

Their statement read: “First and foremost, FIFA would like to reiterate its condemnation of the use of force by Russia in its invasion of Ukraine. Violence is never a solution and FIFA expresses its deepest solidarity to all people affected by what is happening in Ukraine.

“FIFA calls again for the urgent restoration of peace and for constructive dialogue to commence immediately. FIFA remains in close contact with the Ukrainian Association of Football and members of the Ukrainian football community who have been requesting support to leave the country for as long as the current conflict persists.

“No international competition shall be played on the territory of Russia, with ‘home’ matches being played on neutral territory and without spectators.

“The member association representing Russia shall participate in any competition under the name ‘Football Union of Russia (RFU)’ and not ‘Russia’. No flag or anthem of Russia will be used in matches where teams from the Football Union of Russia participate.”

It all looked like window-dressing, given that it made so little difference to the FIFA World Cup, especially after Poland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic had declared that they would refuse to play Russia in the play-offs for a place at Qatar 2022.

Cezary Kulesza, head of the Polish FA, declared: “Today’s FIFA decision is totally unacceptable. We are not interested in participating in this game of appearances. Our stance remains intact: Polish National Team will not play with Russia, no matter what the name of the team is.”

In a further tweet, Kulesza added: “Due to the disgraceful decision of FIFA, the Polish FA sent a letter today to all [football] federations in Europe. We presented our position and encouraged them to stand by our side. Because only united we will be strong. No indulgence for Russian aggression against Ukraine!”

Swedish Football Association chairman, Karl-Erik Nilsson, said: “The illegal and deeply unjust invasion of Ukraine currently makes all football exchanges with Russia impossible. We therefore urge FIFA to decide that the playoff matches in March in which Russia participates will be cancelled. But regardless of what FIFA chooses to do, we will not play against Russia in March.”

While the Czech FA released a statement, which read: "The FA executive committee approved unanimously the decision that the Czech national team will under no circumstances play the possible game against Russia's team in the 2022 World Cup qualification.”

The English FA also announced that England would not play against Russia at any level of international competition and a statement said: “Out of solidarity with Ukraine and to wholeheartedly condemn the atrocities being committed by the Russian leadership, The FA can confirm that we won’t play against Russia in any international fixtures for the foreseeable future. This includes any potential match at any level of senior, age group or para football.”

It appeared to take the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommending that Russia and its ally Belarus should be banned from international sport for FIFA to fall into line.

A FIFA statement read: “Following the initial decisions adopted by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which envisaged the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.

“These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters.

“Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.”

Where FIFA could have led the way by banning Russia immediately, it appeared paralysed by the perceived conflict that Infantino faced because of his relationship with President Putin.

As Oliver Brown said in the Daily Telegraph: “Be in no doubt, FIFA is ejecting Russian teams from their competitions purely because it has been shamed into doing so. Infantino pulled the trigger only when the wave of revulsion for his initial solution, which involved a meaningless rebrand of Russia’s national side as the “Russian Football Union”, gained unstoppable momentum.”

Perhaps FIFA’s actions will cut through to the Russian public but where it could have taken a moral stand, it appears to have yielded, kicking and screaming, simply because international public opinion forced their hand.

Week 1 entry:

The first entry of my PR activity is a video that was posted via the Optus Sports website. The video uploaded was a ‘Mini Classic’ match between Manchester City and Bayern Munich, during the 2014/15 Champions League group game. The short film consisted of the main highlights between two of Europe’s biggest clubs. This video could be accessed through various social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and the Official Optus Sports website. The objective of this PR activity is to allow football fans to remain engaged with the sport of football, especially through all the restrictions and lock down laws being introduced in Australia. Producing videos of old classic and exiting games, allows fans to watch content that is entertaining and acquits them of their boredom, as there are currently no games being played in the top five leagues across Europe. I first came across this video, after I had recently viewed a similar video of a different classic match on the Optus Sports Facebook page. This made me curious to see which other matches were included on the Optus Sports website, so I had a browse on the website and found the ‘Mini Classic’ match. I believe this was an excellent PR activity, as it allows for football fans to stay connected and engaged with the sport, through these difficult times.

  Week 2 entry:

In this week’s entry for my PR activity I have decided to include a video that was published on the Manchester City website. The video upload, contains an interview with Manchester City’s CEO Ferran Soriano, in regards to the impending European ban, issued by UEFA. Soriano and Manchester City created this interview to voice their opinion on the matter and to express that City are innocent and will be cleared of any wrong doing.

This video was shared amongst various social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and the official Manchester City website. The aim of this PR activity is to send out key messages to Manchester City stakeholders through the use of this interview. Manchester had previously constructed a public statement regarding the ban in Europe. Which the club decided to enhance by putting a face behind the statement. This interview would reassure stakeholders that Manchester City is a legitimate sports organisation, that achieves things professionally, by the book. This PR activity demonstrates a clear link between key themes and concepts discussed in this week’s class. I believe this was an excellently constructed interview, where Soriano uses powerful and affective language to express the views that he was trying to promote to Manchester City stakeholders and it’s publics.

  Week 3 entry:

The third entry of my PR activity, is a launch event attempting to promote a marathon that will be held in New York City. The launch event is hosted by New Balance, in the form of a pop-up shop entitled New Balance Pizza Co. The organisation rewards participants who are training hard for the upcoming marathon, by offering them a free slice of pizza for every five miles they track using the Strava app. The objective of this unusual stunt is to encourage runners who will be entering the marathon, to remain training for the event by offering them a small, but pleasurable reward for their efforts. This PR activity determines that there is a clear connection between this launch event, and the tools and tactics described in this week’s class. This event is definitely designed to stand out and leave a long-lasting impact on the New York public, as you would not generally expect a sports brand to promote a running marathon, through the use of junk food. I viewed this campaign, while I was browsing for interesting sports PR activity to use for this week. I believe this was an exceptional PR event launched by New Balance. As it attracted the media’s attention straight away because of its unusual delivery in promoting the event.

In this week’s entry for my PR activity, I have decided to include a stunt that Nike commenced in Los Angeles. The sports brand has decided to redecorate a running track based at Los Angeles City College, through painting each lane a different colour of the rainbow. The stunt was an attempt to raise awareness to promote equality and inclusivity of all LGBT (gay) athletes. This stunt constructed by Nike is in relation to the promotion of their ‘Be True’ campaign which was deliberately revealed on ‘National Coming Out Day’. This campaign is devoted to Gilbert Baker the artist who constructed the rainbow flag that represents gay pride. Nike are constantly creating new designs, to include LGBT symbols to help promote the cause. Nike are endeavouring to establish a culture that accepts every religion, race, background gender and sexual preference. They are instilling a vision with the help of Gilbert Banker, to support inclusion culture through the use of sport. This is a fantastic campaign that links to the ideas discussed in this week’s class. Nike are helping to improve their organisation’s image through the media and general public, by focusing on an issue that is not being addressed in today’s generation of sport. Furthermore, this PR activity was discovered by browsing on the website entitled famous campaigns.

The fifth entry of my PR activity is a campaign where Travel Republic offers football fans an alternative to their Madrid holiday on June 1. After Tottenham Hotspurs and Liverpool, acquired a chance to play in the 2019 Champions League final in Madrid, Travel Republic decided to release an emergency evacuation plan to supporters of Manchester United, Everton and Arsenal, who had already booked their holiday in Madrid for June. They are allowing the rival fans for the clubs in the final, a chance to modify their holiday by permitting them to choose an alternative city in Spain while the Champions League final is in progress. This campaign clearly highlights that there is a deeper and wider conversation being made by the organisation, Travel Republic and its target audience. In this week’s entry for my PR activity, I have decided to include a launch event constructed by Adidas. The sports organisation nominated a chicken shop in Hackney, to launch an event to promote Adidas’ new boot called Glitch. Adidas decided to transform the entire shop for the promotion, additionally selecting a distinctive designed chicken box in the form of packaging, for the boots. This innovative idea allowed Adidas to reach a street-smart audience within the community. In addition, the launch event featured a performance by popular UK rapper Headie One, to help attract potential customers to the pop-up shop. This is a clear demonstration of a well-developed and constructed public relations campaign, as it uses a fashionable rap artist in today’s generation, as well as a popular destination within the community to attract the specific target audience. This further demonstrates a clear connection to excellent brief examples discussed in class previously this week. I discovered this campaign by Adidas, through an Instagram post uploaded by Soccer Bible, I later found the campaign again through the website entitled ‘famous campaigns.’ I believe this is an exceptional launch event by Adidas, as it utilises two elements that are very fashionable with the specific target audience within the UK. It also attracts media attention as it is an unusual stunt that has not been constructed before by a sports brand.

For the seventh entry of my PR activity, I have included a Mastercard campaign that was conducted throughout the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Mastercard committed to donate 10,000 meals to children in Latin America and the Caribbean, for each goal that is scored by either Lionel Messi or Neymar Jr at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. This campaign’s objective was to raise awareness of the World Food Programme and to assist hungry children, in need of meals. Although this campaign would lead you to assume that by donating meals to hungry children, Mastercard would enhance its reputation and public image. The organisation suffered an undesirable amount of media backlash following the release of the campaign. The media created an image of a twisted version of the campaign, by naming it the ‘Mastercard Hunger Games World Cup. Although Mastercard had good intentions releasing this campaign, I believe the delivery has incorrect. Mastercard should not leave satisfying children’s hunger to chance, there are too many variables that could possibly go wrong with the campaign, such as; if one or even both players were to get injured, and if both players mentioned were to have a bad tournament. Mastercard should have made a donation regardless and possibly had the Messi and Neymar Jr contribution as an extra bonus. Although this is a regretful campaign, it still links to campaign ideas developed within class, as it allows me to differentiate between a good campaign and a bad one. I accessed this campaign while I was browsing on the website, ‘famous campaigns.’

In this week’s entry for my PR activity, I have decided to include a brilliant YouTube video assembled by Nike. The YouTube video includes professional footballers such as Harry Kane, Alex Iwobi and Ryan Sessegnon. As well as artists such as Skepta, J Hus and Santan Dave. The video was released by Nike to celebrate London’s diverse sports culture. It also depicts the challenges and obstacles that Londoners face while playing sport they adore in the country’s capital. Furthermore, this advertisement is attempting to aspire children throughout London to participate in sport, regardless of the challenges that they may face in their communities. Nike have illustrated that every athlete has hurdles to overcome while growing up and that there shouldn’t be any excuses to not participate in sports. I believe this a successful advertisement by Nike as it arouses the interest of the targeted audience by including professional athletes and well known celebrates to develop the interest of its publics. I located this advertisement through the social media website, Instagram, as I am personally following Santan Dave who featured in the video. This campaign clearly links to key themes and concepts learnt in class, as we continue to develop our understanding on how to communicate the key messages viewed in the brief through campaigns.

The tenth entry of my PR activity, is a campaign YouTube video where, the NHS pleads members of the public to donate blood. Through the upcoming Ruby World Cup, the NHS request fans of the England national team to donate blood to present their support for the team. The campaign is requesting 100,000 new members to assist the cause by registering to become a blood donator between the launch of the event and the World Cup Final. The YouTube video features ex-England rugby World Cup winners Jonny Wilkinson, Matt Dawson, Martin Johnson and Ben Kay, as they all contribute blood to the NHS. The video is followed by the message ‘We are all one big team’, to remind the audience, that this issue involves the whole nation, and that we can all play our part in resolving this matter. I believe this a well-constructed YouTube advertisement that helps to promote awareness for this campaign. The campaign includes the ironic red and white England flag, and the English red rose constructed in the video through the blood donated. This campaign additionally encourages denotations through the use of emotions and sympathy towards patients in need of blood. As we continue to develop our understanding of what tools and tactics that are used in a successful campaign in class, it is clear that this campaign links back to the concepts that we are learning about through the semester.  Week 11 Entry:

In this week’s entry for my PR activity, I have elected to include Nike’s campaign ‘Just Do It’ featuring Raheem Sterling. Manchester City footballer Raheem Sterling appeared on the latest addition of Nike’s ‘Just Do It’ advertisement, back in December 2018. The England International had been racially abused by fans in a Premier League match against Chelsea FC. The advertisement depicts a close up of Raheem Sterling’s face, as well as the message “Speaking up doesn’t always make life easier. But easy never changed anything”. This is following comments Sterling stated to the English FA, to punish those fans involved with the incident. I found this advisement on both Facebook and Instagram social media platforms as I follow Raheem Sterling on Instagram and because I am a Manchester City supporter. I believe this is an extremally well-constructed advertisement by Nike, as they have included the latest sports star that was racially abused. This is a clear demonstration of Nike’s stands on racism within sports. They are striving to tackle the issue by supporting Raheem Sterling after the unnecessary abuse that he received. This campaign would also improve Nike’s public image as they are trying to remove racism in sports all together. The key concepts of a well-designed campaign that we are continuously learning in class, are clearing demonstrated in this advertisement as Nike selected the best possible ambassador to help them create this advertisement.

  Week 12 Entry:

For my final entry for my PR activity, I have decided to include a campaign by Bjorn Borg, that helps the members of the community change their life around. The Swedish Sports brand, Bjorn Borg has assembled and opened a new pop up shop, in Amsterdam. The purpose of this store is to allow customers to trade in drugs, for sports workout gear within the shop. The idea behind this initiative is, that you do not need drugs to get high, because when working out, you receive the same substances within your brain without the need of consuming drugs. This campaign would only have a positive effect on Bjorn Borg as an organisation, as it completely transforms the city of Amsterdam into becoming more active within sports. This would therefore produce a lasting effect on the community and further improve the sports brand’s relations with its publics. I believe this is a fantastic campaign by Bjorn Borg as they are aiming to diminish a drug problem throughout the country, as well as advertising health and safety in the Amsterdam community. There is a clear link between the elements in this campaign and essential components in successful campaigns discussed in class, I viewed this campaign while browsing the website ‘famous campaigns.’

Amos Yee is finally a free bird.

He finally gets the asylum he wanted in the United States but what has the debacle surrounding his persecution by Singapore authorities taught us?

For me, there are 3 major learning points to take away.

First and foremost we should learn from this experience and not prosecute children for holding an unacceptable opinion. He was a 16-year-old boy at the time of the material offenses he was charged with; let the children be.

Amos Yee was a 16 years old child when he was persecuted and remanded in prison for 53 days pending his trial for maintaining and articulating an unacceptable opinion.

He refused to give up his controversial views on religion though it was clear to me at least that it was his political views and in particular his condemnation of Lee Kuan Yew that rankled the powers that be the most.

Some naughty boys grow up to be successful men. Take a most relevant example that was pointed out to me in the American TV personality Seth MacFarlane who was raised a Catholic just like Amos Yee and just like Amos Yee turned against his religion and mocked it at a very young age.

Seth is today the creator of the highly successful American animated sitcom TV series "Family Guy", a show that airs in Singapore that routinely mocks Christianity that has been the target of numerous taste and indecency complaints in America.

Alas, Amos Yee was not allowed the same privilege Seth MacFarlane was as a boy. Amos Yee the boy was imprisoned in Singapore under our sedition laws.

Nothing will ever change the fact that a 16-year-old boy was remanded for 53 days for airing his unacceptable views in Singapore. How can this have been right?

His eventual prison sentence of four weeks was backdated to start from his remand and he therefore in fact served almost twice the sentence time he eventually received!

Singapore has lost a vexatious and obnoxious kid who should have been reprimanded and counseled not prosecuted and jailed.

The takeaway here is that boys will be boys and they need space and time to grow not persecution and prison time.

Secondly, it has been found that he was persecuted for his political views in the guise of a prosecution for wounding religious feelings and disseminating obscene material online.

The fact of the matter is that sedition is inherently intertwined with politics. The crime of sedition is highly politicised and the Government's prosecution of Amos Yee was doomed to be construed as a political enterprise.

Two US immigration courts have now called a spade a spade. Pinky our dear leader was upset with Amos Yee for denigrating his father but did not have the balls to call him out and instead unleashed the full venom of the organs of State up his tender ass using the cover of religious sensitivity and the arsenal of the land's sedition laws.

Many Singaporeans including every religious fanatic bought the ploy hook line and sinker.

This trick worked in Singapore quite effectively and Amos was convicted but unfortunately the sham was laid thread bare in the United States in the asylum proceedings and appeal thereon.

A most damning indictment of the administration of justice in Singapore spelt out in technicolour detail in two separate judgments for the world to read to justify giving a young boy refuge from political persecution in his own country.

This is simply remarkable and unprecedented in the annals of legal history here save for the Privy Council tearing into the then Chief Justice Wee Chong Jin's shambolic judgment against JBJ Jeyaratnam that was used to debar the politician.

That hurt no doubt as will this one. Not something Singaporeans should be proud of. It's not our finest hour. A stinging slap in the face for Singapore and the system here.

Therefore the second take away is that the judgement of the three-member United States Board of Immigration Appeals upholding an earlier ruling from a lower court judge unequivocally means that Amos Yee's persecution and imprisonment in Singapore was politically motivated to silence him. There are no two ways about this.

Shame on the PAP Government exposed for the world to see what it does to little boys that annoy them.

Third and finally and most importantly, we should all learn that there is a better response to religious sensitivity and hate speech.

There is a better way.

A distinction should be drawn in law and in our minds between an unacceptable viewpoint and violent rhetoric.

It is the latter that we should react to and should simply learn to respond calmly to the former if one cannot ignore that unacceptable viewpoint.

There should not be a law protecting the wounding of religious feelings. A law against inciting violence, any form of violence, is perfectly understood but a law for "wounding" religious "feelings" should be unnecessary.

We should be guided by the maxim "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will not hurt me".

I equally take the view that prevention is better than cure. However, I differ from the Government in our view of what prevention in this context means.

The law essentially operates as a cure. It operates after religious feelings have been wounded.

Needless to say that in theory crime and it's punishment do provide some deterrence but are not entirely effective in preventing one's religious feelings from being wounded. That privilege belongs to the individual and communities affected.

It is rather silly to think that a law criminalising hate speech can achieve this aim effectively.

The Dalai Lama for example says: "Do not let the behaviour of others destroy your inner peace".

People must be educated to entertain two opposing thoughts in their minds without taking offense to one which wounds their religious feelings. This is the best method of preventing the "wounding of religious feelings".

I know the zealots reading this will scoff at the proposition presented here but zealots are by definition oversensitive pricks who need a kick in the back side not societies sympathy for their perpetually wounded feelings.

Zealots are the problem not loud mouths like Amos Yee. The zealots are now stunned by the final turn of events and are left licking their wounds.

Fundamentally though the question to ask is this: Who asked you to watch Amos Yee's videos? A friend of mine put it this way:

"Singaporeans who were offended by him but who enjoy watching US comedians make fun of everything will soon see themselves made fun of. I never got the immense fuss over his video. He's not forcing you to watch it."

Take yet again the example of Seth McFarlane's Family Guy TV series a show that airs in Singapore that routinely mocks Christianity. DVD's of the show are readily available for purchase in Singapore. Yet where is the hue and cry that plagued Amos Yee's videos?The show has not been banned in Singapore. Why not if they are as sacrilegious and blasphemous as Amos Yee's videos. Why the double standards?

There is no human right to take offense codified into any law or universal charter. However many choose to be thin skinned and choose to take offense over this boy's offense.

There is no such thing as a right not to be offended. Nowadays, everyone gets offended by everything. If your feelings get wounded that's your problem surely. We all need to grow thicker skins rather than scream for state sponsored censorship.

Shame on all who took such grave offense and brayed for this teenager's criminal prosecution. He was a very naughty BOY and should have been simply ignored or counseled.

To all the oversensitive religious fanatics who rejoiced in the imprisonment of a 17-year-old boy for being controversial and obnoxious know this; you should have turned the other cheek.

It would seem that Amos Yee has had the last laugh. He has escaped persecution and is now free. Now let's wait to see what exactly he does with his new found freedom and lease on life.

FPL Cup Night Stalker, Round One Preview

Greetings all,

It's the most wonderful time of them all, if you're into chasing down into the rabbit holes of the intertubes.  It's FPL Cup time, and I know most "serious" FPL players probably regard this as a trivial little side game, but I think it's just a weekly delivery of a whole new box of puzzles.  Each week we get just a name and a team page.  Who is this dude?  Is it a dude?  Is it a famous dude?  Is it a grumpy middle school history teacher from Newcastle?  Is it the future Australian Men's National Team Coach?  Is it a stripper/model/waitress/actress from South Africa?  Is it a high school cricket player from somewhere in Ireland?  The internet is a wonderful thing and with a few clicks here and a few clicks there, voila!, your opponent is no longer a random name but is a flesh and blood, real life person with whom you are locked in mortal combat.

I've been doing this thing for a few years for my minileague and wanted to share the fun.  I think I probably find about 2/3 of the opponents with pretty high degree of certainty.  And when I can't find them, I sure don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.  Here's what I dug up this week on the Cup opponents for the FMLFPL crew.  Team pages are linked.

Walsh -- 882 points, 167,084th place

Gooner XI -- Sayantan Bhattacharya -- 807 points, 1,215,432nd place

This is Sayantan's sixth year playing FPL, vs. Walsh's fifth, but the Indian gent has yet to crack the top 150K.  He played a Free Hit Chip back in GW12, but it really doesn't look like he made very much of it as he only changed about five players.  Weird.  His is a much more common name than you might initially think (unless you're Indian and it probably seems like Sean Thompson, or something like that), and the search took a while.  He's in a bunch of leagues, but when I looked at the smallest of them, I found a bunch of guys who all had this guy as one of their friends, and I think this must be his page, pretending he's a Gooner and shit because Gooner Fans are generally kind of insane.  But really?  Thomas Vermaelen?  And then I saw the URL to the page and it has his actual name.  Yup, that's him.  So what does he do? Not really sure.  The other guys in his smallest league all seem to be engineer types at various places about India, but there doesn't look like a common thread to their training.  So I think they basically sit around the Indian version of GoonerSlack and just talk shit on Spurs all day long. Sound about right?

This one seems like it ought to be a walkover with Walsh's Sterling, Silva, Salah differentials and with the Chelsea defense.  Kun and Lukaku are Sayantan's only hope.  Smash him Walsh!

Alon -- 859 points, 354,675th place

TB -- Su Myat -- 835 points, 679,258th place

This is the second season for Su, who flies the Myanmar flag, and who claims a Chelsea allegiance.  Su finished 1.1 million last year and is doing better this year.  Now first off, if you do a FB search for Su Myat, about the first three pages of links that come up, or maybe even more, all look like they work at one of those strip mall foot massage places with the sliding windows and shady price menus and the exiting clients who are scanning the parking lot furtively to make sure nobody recognizes them.  And none of the people in these links happen to be wearing Chelsea kit in their pictures.  And some aren't wearing very much, period.  In fact like the whole list consists of people like that who really don't look like they would even know what FPL was.  This was the only guy I saw while scrolling. And he doesn't look particularly interested in FPL either. Ultimately I had to give up looking for this one for fear that the kids would walk through and see some dubious images while I was hunting for this needle in a haystack.  No happy ending here.

The injuries could hit Alon on this one with Morata out, but if Kane Kanes like Kane can Kane, then it's not going to be much fun time for Su.  I think Alon should see this one through.

Producer Nate  -- 891 points, 115,516th place

JC junior the kop FC -- Khuzaimi Ismail -- 814 points, 1,062,611st place

This is the second FPL season for Khuzaimi while it is Nate's sixth.  Nate topped out at 24K two years ago, while his Malaysian opponent finished 694K in his debut season.  Malaysian opponents are sooo hard to track down in general, but this is the guy here.  Three of the guys common to one of his minileagues are all FB friends and are flying this same banner in their pictures, whatever it is.  It says he is from London but currently lives in Shah Alam, Malaysia.  He used to work at Euphoria, which says it is some kind of Marketing and Social Media Agency, but looks maybe kinda like a nightclub place also.  Maybe Nate could get a gig there for the band?  Road trip to Malaysia!  Who's in?!?!?

Khuzaimi has Aguero teed up and ready to tit against Swansea, and KDB could add to the damage, but I think those could be countered by Kane and Silva if they get their large units swinging in the box as well.  Nate probably has an edge on the defender front, especially if Jones makes it back into the lineup.  Show this lad how the entertainment business is properly run, Nate!

Guest Jason -- 875 points, 213,357th place

Beast FC -- Lochie Rumble -- 603 points, 4,601,569th place

Who does this?  This is a first year account for Lochie and there hasn't been a single roster move all season.  No lineup change.  No transfers.  And yeah, I know that some people make teams to enter into some kind of set it/forget it contest where you have one lineup that stays set for the whole season.  But this is not the kind of lineup you would come up with if you were doing that.  Sam McQueen, Rob Holding, and Emre Can are in the starting lineup, along with Rajiv van La Parra.  Jack Butland is the vice captain pressed into action whenever autoCap Kun sits out or fractures his torso.  Allegedly.  This team isn't in any minileagues and that's not even really a name, I don't think, so I doubt we'll get a peek at the psycho who came up with this thing, but like a science experiment gone bad, it seems to have been properly abandoned.  But wait...  I never totally quit, and it turns out that Lochie Rumble is actually a Twitter account with two followers, but who has liked 3,660 things.  I hope they don't actually like their team.  And he's also some kind of gamer, I guess.  I'm going to suggest that he stick to things other than FPL.

Aguero, KDB and Mane for Lochie, but the rest of the team is shite and Jason should move on to the next round.

Derek -- 909 points, 53,435th place

The Blues -- (some Bulgarian name -- seems to translate as Milen Dilov) -- 577 points, 4,746,427th place

It's Milen's first FPL season and it might be his last, by the looks of it.  It's Derek's second year after finishing 47K in his 2016/17 debut.  Milen did nothing in the first few weeks, but then in GW5 made three transfers, and that has been it.  And that week, he decided to triple captain Morata at home against Arsenal.  Obviously a Chelsea fan with his team name and that move.  He got a 1x3=3 point haul after Morata played 88 minutes and only produced a yellow card as a return.  Whoops.  Milen isn't in any minileagues so doesn't have any cross linking that way.  I have no way of knowing which of the multiple Milen Dilovs is actually "running" this team, but I'm gonna go with this guy, because the pictures on his page are pretty awesome and he works at Monster Energy.

Derek should win this one pretty easily.  The midfield matchup is really one-sided.  And Kane.  And etc.  Go do it Derek!

Scott -- 919 points, 32,852nd place

TGH -- Toby Hollingsworth -- 752 points, 2,529,919th place

And finally my team! This is another first year FPL player who has gone Ghost.  He made his single roster transaction in GW5.  The lineup has stayed the same since, and he only made it into the Cup because his armband is on Kane.  Kane produced 24 of Toby's 44 points last week.  Really not fair that he gets in, and so many active players don't.  Booooo Toby!  Anyway, here is Toby on Facebook.  His picture from back in 2013 is rather embarrassing, and in 2012 he is partying in a room with some Justin Bieber posters on the wall.  At least one of the others in his one minileague lives in Newcastle and two of them seem to have been in college together at Leeds Beckett University.  Can't seem to lock down on where Toby lives now, or maybe he's just on the road following the Beebz. Anyway, he sure isn't tending to his team, so hopefully I can just put him out of his misery, but you never know what happens in H2H.

Toby will get eleven out on the pitch, but just barely and I think I have the edge in midfield differentials and should hopefully manage cleans from three, if not four of my defenders.

Crazy, yeah, but only marginally more crazy than the existence of this game at all, when you think about it...
