Disney, releasing Wish: "so it's all about legacy--the new generation surpassing the old, overcoming the evils perpetuated by them, relinquishing singular power... and there's an old man in a tower, uh... animal sidekick, i guess..., ah... magic...?

Miyazaki, just out of frame, sledgehammer raised:

#the boy and the heron #not tagging wish 'cause i'm being a little acidic #this isn't to be negative in the slightest--I really respect both films--but it's interesting to see how visceral boy+H gets with its story #what evils have to be rejected and what they represent--and how characters and the world suffer from those evils--as well as how the whole #'rejecting' part goes. in terms of animation powerhouses discussing their legacies - disney and miyazaki both - I find it interesting that #one makes a pretty safe and nostalgic movie about imagination and dreams; the other is a long trudge through the land of the dead.#b+h is a hard watch - and a look at the legacy of a man questioning his whole purpose in the world - after his cultural touchstones #have long passed by. Mahito needs to understand his grief to keep living--but if he drowns in it he'll just continue the cannibalistic and #violent world of his granduncle. how the hell do you make art when the trauma of your entire life has colored it forever? How can anyone?#maybe after a while... it's time to detonate that damn tower and keep living.#this is to say #if you have enough money to make whatever you want #Make It Fucking Count

Just watched Nimona

The fact this movie never got a theater release because of Blue Sky's closure and Disney deciding to nix it once acquired will forever break my heart holy shit.

Like up front it is BEAUTIFULLY animated, the writing is tight as hell, the story is genuinely moving and amazing. By that alone it deserved to be in theaters.

*deep breath*

But BOY HOWDY am I SALTY AS FUCK that a animated movie that is accessible to kids, especially queer kids, got knocked out of the process to reach theaters when

IT JUST CASUALLY HAS A INTERRACIAL GAY COUPLE WITH A (metaphorically) ADOPTED (literally) TRANS CHILD AS THE 3 MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE MOVIE THE FUCKING HELL WE COULD'VE HAD ALL THIS PERFECTLY DONE QUEER MEDIA ON THE BIG SCREEN AS A COHERENT AMAZING STORY FUC-

#Nimona #Nimona film #God I feel Nimona so hard I actually had to fast forward some scenes because I am not in a GREAT headspace right now so it was kinda #triggering at the moment because hahaha yeah people see me as a monster. Whooooooooo.#like god I hope so many kids watch this #young teens trying to figure stuff out #And like I have fond memories of the OG Nimona- I was There for the webcomic #but the ending of the original comic ngl kinda scarred me a bit #and I'm so glad it shifted #LIKE SPOILERS FOR WHAT DOESN'T HAPPEN IN THE MOVIE BUT WHAT I REMEMBER FROM THE END OF THE COMIC #but in the comic spoilers Nimona does live but still wanders and it's left open whether she and Ballister ever meet again #I could be misremembering but yeah #like as a NB person it made me feel like I may never find a home- a place to belong #so I think the fact that Nimona and Ballister met at the end #where it shows the city is open to embracing Nimona #it kinda puts a salve on that wound #LIKE DON'T GET ME WRONG I recognize the power of the OG ending #Stevenson was exploring his own feelings and figuring themselves out and they were younger so it made sense #but sometimes even beautiful worthy media can leave a negative mark #depending on the person #because we all have different experiences and what is healing to one can be poison to the other #so YMMV on which ending you like better

people fawning over the environmentalist themes in tolkien’s work has always made me deeply uneasy but I could never articulate why, and reading orientalism is clarifying a lot of that for me lol

#Said lays it out very clearly like #‘negative’ representations of the orient. as in representing them as deficient or lacking in some way #rests on ‘positive’ representations of the occident. as in the west is always ‘doing’ is always the thing driving human momentum #so idyllic representations of a pastoral post-labour society surrounded by fields and old world forests #populated by guys who have ample free time and fuck around all day #(& who are all white. at least in the films)#that’s not an uncomplicatedly good way to present the world #and is a perspective that is deeply informed by being beneficiaries of continued colonial extraction domination and exploitation #i meam the fictional world is literally called the centre of the earth lol #anyway not ‘cancelling’ tolkien or whatever I’m just glad to be able to understand why exactly #I think it’s bad to just uncritically praise his love of the environment as this like pure ideal #that is somehow uncorrupted by the historical and political context he came from #*post-scarcity I should say not necessarily post-labour #but like the labour processes that make that life idyllic in the first place are invisible

camscanner was REALLY fighting with me, so im going to rescan stuff tomorrow, but i got my developed photos back on monday!

my goal with getting into 35mm was to sort of "manufacture" nostalgia in a way. which was actually my therapists idea, funny enough. i dont need to get into it, but ive got a webkinz plush photoshoot coming your way soon!

The thing that was already pretty clear but the final season is really solidifying is that the writers of this show truly have nothing to say about these characters. They are just sticking their finger to the wind trying to get a sense of the interests of an audience they no longer understand

#or rather they people who did understand the shows audience are long gone from the show #the fact that they are halfway through filming the season and haven't decided how the show ends?#completely in character but also so embarrassing #but hey one episode down one more closer to freedom #riverdale negativity

people need to stop having this big expectation for random famous people. i swear i see some people care more about whether a celebrity has spoken about an issue or not than the actual issue itself and lose the bigger picture of it all and it's weird. like actually some singer or actor or whoever not talking about palestine is far from the most disappointing thing about it (not in cases where they're are saying actually harmful things and spreading misinformation, especially to young audiences eg. noah schnapp) and in the grand scheme of things actually doesn't matter that much. obviously it's a nice thing if someone you admire speaks up in support of palestine but stop caring about whether that happens or not more than u care about the horrifying loss violence and cruelty that the palestinian people are living through right now

#'so disappointing that blahblah whoey from this one film hasnt said anything' ok but its not going to change much really so lets move on #i dont even mean this in a negative way its just like. focus your energy on something actually helpful and trying to change things #and this applies to a lot of things i see. so many ppl focus on the response of their fave or whatever like. cop on pleae
