It was a simple spread, according to Kiyoomi.
Vibrant strawberry jam filling the airy pockets of fresh ciabatta, smothered in dandelion-yellow butter and warmed comfortably. Fluffy eggs sprinkled with fragrant black pepper and fat flakes of himalayan salt, dazzled with parsley and green onions cut from the small windowsill garden. Rows of thick, fatty slices of bacon; crispy on the edges but softened everywhere else. Orange juice so bright it mimics the sun, thin pieces of pulp dancing alongside the cool ice chips.
You think you might cry.
Sakusa floats around the kitchen, his shirtless torso pressed against the cool granite counter as he mixes ingredients in a pale plastic bowl, flannel pajama pants hanging low on his hips. He hears you before he sees you, throwing a look over his shoulder to take in your appearance, his face softening into something that looks a lot like love.
“Good morning,” He hums by way of greeting, “Rest well?”
“How could I not?” You joke, tossing yourself onto the counter stools and swiveling around just because you can, “Your thread count is in the millions. Where are your sheets from? Dubai? Honduras? Fucking Mars?”
“Egypt, actually. And they’re only a 1500 thread count.” He corrects playfully, breathing out a quiet laugh, “But I’ll take the compliment, I’m glad you slept well.”
“Only a 1500 thread count.” You mutter to yourself, toying with the hem of your faded club shorts you’ve had for years, “Practice today?”
“Hmm? Oh, no, not today. Meian’s letting us have the day off.“ He says, idly scratching an itch on his torso, a gentle smile pushing the apples of his cheeks, “Just us today.”
Between the two of you, quality time is worth more than gold. Breakfast, especially, has become a ritual of sorts. And Sunday brunch is always holy. You hum sleepily, happily, thinking of all the tasks you won't do today. You watch him shelter the food from your prying eyes, and you nearly call him out for it. He acts like you can’t smell the flavor profiles of every individual dish; like the pile of dishes in the sink and colorful spices on the countertop aren’t giving away his not-so-secret recipes.
“What’s for breakfast?” You say instead, just to make him happy.
“It’s a surprise,” He grins, flour dried across his cheek like a phantom kiss, “But I’m almost done.”
It continues like this. Him defending the food as you try and knab a bite. Lazily waving around the hard plastic spatula as he talks, and ignoring the speck of egg that flies off to save himself the embarrassment. Playfully flirting with him as he tries not to lose focus. 
“Close your eyes,” He whispers, as he flicks off the gas stove, “Food’s ready.”
You push your hands over your eyes, spreading your fingers to take peaks at him. He plates your food, heaping portions that nearly topple off the plate. You grin, promising yourself to finish it all. 
At one point, his eyes meet yours and you snap your fingers shut with a squeak. Whoops. He laughs, and you both pretend you weren't peaking. 
“Okay, open your eyes now.” He mumbles, wiping his hands on a dish towel, “And tell me what you think.”
Removing your hands from your eyes, you gaze down at the plate below you. It’s a confession, a declaration of love. All of it.
A heavy porcelain plate, a housewarming gift you gave him when the two of you were just friends. The edge is chipped from dropping it in the sink one too many times. The memory makes you feel warm.
The food itself is plated with enough space between each dish that it doesn’t touch, remembering your disdain for mixed textures. You never mentioned anything, but he picked up on it.
Your favorite fork, one of the prongs bent a bit abnormally. You joke that the weight of the metal is just right – you didn't think he’d remember.
Your heart melts out of your chest, raw feelings pooling on the floor. Every dish is an offering, a sacrifice. You stuff your face full of it. 
“Good?” He smirks, flirtatious and knowing. You nod with a mouthful of egg and bread and bacon and jam. “Then slow down. Breakfast is not to be rushed.”
Your heart beats a little faster when you notice the satisfaction on his face. Kiyoomi’s glowing, shining with a happiness that only shows around you. “It’s just us today. Take it easy.”

Sunday 21st April 2024
The phone next to our bed rang, and I made stabbing attempts to locate the receiver. Good morning Charles said a scratchy voice, it's half past six, breakfast is at seven. I gradually became aware that this was not general information designed to satisfy a mild curiosity but instead to instill a sense of urgency to respond, react and present ourselves in the dining area ready to start a fresh day of exploration. Stumbling into clothes we obeyed without a murmur. Life looked much improved after a strong coffee and Eggs Benedict!
Shamwari Game Reserve has been going for some 32 years. Previously the land had been used for farming cattle and sheep. The only exotic animals would have been wart hogs; aggressive in their own way way. Clearly any native animals had long ago been moved on; successful cattle rearing not mixing well with predatory species. Over the years Shamwari has been reintroducing native animals to this area, and gradually the reserve has grown in size. It is owned by a Dubai conglomerate who are sensitive to the aims of the naturalists wanting to protect and grow threatened groups. One such group is white and the more endangered black rhinos. Even within the safety a game reserve provides, poachers will infiltrate and steal the horns so valuable on the black market. This constant war now employs AI technology to monitor 24/7 each rhino successfully thwarting many perpetrators. Population figures are highly sensitive and never published for added protection. They know overall which species are available in the reserve because they put them there, but numbers and where there are at any one time is where the mystery lies and what occupies the ranger's mind. Today we have seen lion, white rhino, zebra, African buffalo, giraffe, elands, kadu, vervet monkeys, red hartebeest and loads of birds. The male lion had made a kill this morning and will be satisfied now for the next 3 days. We are told he would not turn another opportunity down but equally will be happy to sleep and relax for 18 hours a day until Wednesday. Nice work if you can get it!
After a tapas lunch we were all set to explore some more, this time looking for cheetahs and leopards.
The search started around 14.30 and we soon saw elephant, more white rhino, eland and oryx but no cheetah. We stopped for drinks and nibbles. Other rangers were also on the lookout for cheetah but nothing. Then Raymond our ranger saw cheetah tracks; some going up the hill, and fresher ones coming down. Next there was a radio call to say one had been spotted. We leapt back into the Toyota and headed towards the sighting. There in a clearing were two brother cheetahs lying in the grass, stomachs swollen and the remains of a kill next to them. An unfortunate kudu had been outrun. This was a very fortunate spectacle since we not only saw two cheetahs, but also saw them after feeding. An absolutely perfect end to the safari day and just as the sun was going down. Both animals continued to look nervously around. They are predators but they are also prey to others; lions, leopards.
We were amazed at just how close we could get to these wild animals; just feet away from us.
Our Toyota Landcruiser returned us to base for a braai (South African BBQ).
ps The braai was great. We had pork ribs, chicken, oxtail, couscous, aubergine and bread type things. It was delicious. Loads of SB to was it all down. This place is amazing and the staff are so friendly and helpful.

大家好! LL, my expat friend from China, spent Chinese New Year in Shandong, her hometown, and she was eager to catch up upon her return. We had much to update each other over shao kao (Chinese BBQ) and, although she doesn't drink often, she happily shared beers with me because the meat and vegetables skewers were very delicious. The mutton ones were divine: tender, juicy and perfectly seasoned. Finally, we shared a brownie for dessert with coffee.

I chanced upon a Muslim stall which serves mee goreng (fried noodles) along with various dishes, so I decided to try it. An overeasy egg, egg tofu with cabbage, broccoli with hei mu er (tree ear mushrooms) and stirfried bittergourd completed the meal. Everything, especially the bittergourd, was delicious and the noodles were QQ, just the way I like them. The veggies were fresh and crunchy and I was so stuffed from all that food, I sipped my coffee very slowly. I'll be back to try their other dishes!

I revisited the fish soup stall, ordered their new mala fish thick bee hoon (rice vermicelli) soup and instantly regretted my decision. It was a very hot afternoon; once I tasted the spice, I knew my tee would be soaked in sweat by the end of the meal. Nonetheless, the thick slices of fish were very fresh and they're what I keep returning for. I like the original and tomato broths best, but this mala version would be great on cold rainy days. I might try the fried fish instead of blanched fish slices next time.

Globally, thousands struggle to make ends meet as hyperinflation over the past few years caused prices of basic essentials to skyrocket. Daily meals with seafood, fish, poultry and meat that used to be taken for granted are a thing of the past for many households. Being able to afford nourishment is a blessing; I'm grateful that family members, close friends and I still eat relatively well. We've cut back on unnecessary spending, sure, but we don't go to bed hungry and consume enough nutrients. There's much to be thankful for despite these leaner times.

Ramadan this year is an especially sombre one; Muslims around the world watch in horror as Israel killed over 31,000 innocent Palestinians. As if that is not bad enough, plans to attack Rafah, where over 1 million displaced civilians are sheltering, have been approved. More aid is slated to flow into Gaza, but it won't completely prevent genocide if Israel continues to murder thousands of innocent people. A permanent ceasefire and two-state solution are the only ways to end the conflict. 下次见!
