Omg I wanna hear about Egon teaching Trevor to drift the Ecto lmao

So. At the beginning of Afterlife, Egon drifts his truck around a corner. And drifting isn't something your average person can just do without practice, and I have a headcanon for that which I'll answer another time.

Callie knows her dad drives very defensively, never speeds and generally comes off as overly-cautious. So whenever it's time for Trevor to get his permit? Well, Egon is patient, methodical, level-headed and very, very by-the-book when it comes to most things, driving being one of them. And he's more than happy to teach his grandson how to drive.

His natural choice is the Ecto-1. It's durable, stable, and has enough mass that it's not going to leap forward if you push the gas a little too hard, and it's got good shocks for a steady ride. Trevor thinks it's lame he's gotta learn how to drive with his overly cautious cringefail grandpa.

But here's the thing. Learning how to operate a car is one thing. So is reading about safety and emergency procedures. But actually learning how to control a car in a slide or a spin is a totally different thing, and Egon is well aware of this. So on top of general driving, he also teaches Trevor 1: what it feels like when a vehicle starts to move weird and 2: how to respond to specific loss-of-control situation. This also involves knowing the vehicle you're driving, what it can and cannot do, how much space it occupies and how to visually tell how much clearance you have between the vehicle and an obstacle.

And a drift is a pretty good way to learn the feel of a vehicle and how to get comfortable with counterintuitive actions, like steering in the 'wrong direction' when you come into the turn. And it as the added benefit of being fun, and once Trevor figures out that these are not going to be slow, boring driving lessons, he is suddenly stoked to be learning to drive from his grandpa.

And right about then in when Callie shows up to find her dad in the passenger seat and her son doing donuts and just sort of stands there watching until they notice her. Trevor is excited. Egon thinks he's probably going to get yelled at, and he is correct.

Callie is pissed he never taught her to do that.

the thing is. at the end of the day. the actual meta reason light doesn’t have any nuance regarding the criminal justice system is that he’s the main character in a series for twelve year olds. he can’t understand anything at a level a twelve year old would be unable to grasp. imo this is worked very naturally into his characterization but worrying too much about that also distracts from what is being conveyed.

which isn’t necessarily a bad thing! i think it’s both fun and useful to analyze the actual real-world implications of death note and/or to treat it as an adult series. i love that analysis very dearly. i just think the series-as-written is ALSO very interesting and subversive in its own right. children’s lit is qualitatively different from adult lit not because it’s easier to understand (although ofc it usually is) but because it allows its audience to grapple with huge, frightening questions without getting caught up in the practical details. those practical details are important for adults because we are able to materially affect the world but kids are still at the ‘thinking about stuff’ stage

if you kind of take the series on its own terms, it asks you to accept two fundamental facts: - the people light is killing have done horrible things - killing these people will prevent other people from committing crimes

then presents its thesis: - despite both these things being true, it is wrong to kill these people and explicitly asks you to think about whether or not you agree. i really do think this is an interesting, important and subversive question in its own right, and to a certain degree trying to think your way out of answering it by meeting it at an adult level deprives you of the enjoyment of engaging with the central purpose of the series. it’s not necessary to engage with it! it’s not serious business. but it is maybe fun and interesting to do anyway!

Context: Roland has a hardlight body now, and has been alone on the Intinity for months. That's really all you need to know.

As the ramp descended, Roland made sure he was standing straight and at a proper parade rest and briefly pondered why it suddenly mattered. Sure he'd saluted when he'd needed to in the past but…

"She looks like we never-" Captain Lasky stopped mid sentence in surprise, and Roland felt a burst of neon green joy at hearing Lasky's voice in the hangar again.

"Roland?"

"Yes, sir!" The AI replied, nodding once. He tracked familiar faces and IFF tags from neural interfaces as Captain Lasky and his Spartan entourage left the ramp and came to a stop in front of him.

"Is that really you?" The captain asked, surprise still evident in his voice as he gave Roland a once-over.

"May I answer that with a handshake, sir?" Roland extended his hand and waited as Captain Lasky's face broke into a smile, and he returned the gesture.

As soon as Lasky's hand gripped his, Roland yanked himself free and stepped back, his shoulders hunched in surprise at the almost searing burst of tactile data that seemed to flood him.

"Hey! Are you okay?!" The captain's concerned voice bled through the echoes of the data, and Roland straightened himself up.

"Yeah I'm fine but…wow!" Lasky's eyebrows shot up.

"'wow'?" He repeated. "Wow what?"

"Your hand!" Roland exclaimed as he dug through the new data with the enthusiasm of a Labrador retriever digging though an unattended trash can. "I wasn't expecting it to be so soft and so solid! And covered in weird tiny ridges! Also not as greasy as I expected…but the ridges were more unexpected! What are those even for?" Captain Lasky looked at him for several hundred milliseconds.

"My fingerprints?"

"Oh is that what they are..!" He felt like a new part of the universe had clicked into place. Being made for Astrogation, Roland never had any need to look up why human fingers all had a pattern on them, or what made the pattern in the first place.

"Oh come on Roland, you know what fingerprints are, they're on file for literally everyone who sets foot on the ship!" Sarah interjected.

"I've read the image data, but I've never touched them!" He said excitedly. Commander Palmer considered this for a few milliseconds and Roland turned his attention back to Captain Lasky.

"Can we try again??" He asked excitedly. Captain Lasky smiled again, and held his hand out toward Roland again.

He was careful this time, barely touching his palm against the captain's and gradually increasing the pressure. The flow of data was more metered this time, and he was prepared for the intensity.

"This is…nice. I can see why humans like to spend so much time together, especially when you're na-"

"OH-kay, changing subjects." The captain interrupted. It was now his turn to quickly withdraw his hand and look uncomfortable. "Uh…sitrep?"

Roland smiled and moved back to parade rest as his threads pulled up what little data there was to report. He could pester the crew about their fingerprints later.
