The reuse of glass is stalling in France despite its strong decarbonisation potential

While the recycling of glass bottles is around 82% in France, their reuse is still marginal. Its development faces numerous logistical obstacles and a lack of political ambition.
Among the levers for decarbonizing glass, there is one that remains very under-exploited: reuse. If the recycling of bottles and jars reaches 82% in France and 80% on average in Europe, reuse after reconditioning of containers only reaches 22% for water, soda and beer packaging in the Old Continent, according to estimates from the European Packaging Glass Federation (FEVE)[1]. In France, the proportion does not exceed 1 or 2%.
The world number three in the sector, Verallia[2], however, estimates that this practice would divide the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of glass bottles by four, based on the hypothesis that these containers rotate 20 times with a return rate of 95%. A clear advantage over non-reusable aluminum cans or plastic considered less sustainable.
“Glass is the most suitable for reuse because of its resistance, its neutrality and its ability to be washed to offer a perfect health guarantee,” explains Jacques Bordat, president of the French Federation of Glass Industries[3]. The sector shows its support for the anti-waste law for a circular economy (Agec)[4] adopted in 2020 and targeting 10% of packaging reused by 2027.
A national ecosystem to build
The objective is modest in view of the ecological potential of reuse, but a new European regulation on waste management and prevention threatens to revise it further downwards. A first signal will be given on November 21 by the Strasbourg parliament when it votes on the Commission's proposed text.
This aims for 10% reusable packaging for drinks in 2030, three years after the French objective, then only 25% in 2040.
MEPs also added exemptions, particularly for wine. However, since a regulation does not support national interpretation, “the European dynamic risks hindering that of France,” concludes Sophie Nguyen, re-use and bulk director at Citeo[5].
This lack of ambition is partly due to the fact that “reuse does not just consist of replacing a single-use product, it goes hand in hand with a supply chain and different consumer behaviour”, recognizes Charlotte Soulary, head of advocacy at Zero Waste France[6]. A complete ecosystem must be created, from the collection of containers to their remarketing, including their washing and reconditioning.
Local initiatives are flourishing
To do this, Charlotte Soulary fears that “investments will not follow due to the lack of an ambitious trajectory stated beyond 2027”. Its NGO recommends a target of 50% reuse in 2040. In fact, in the catering and hotel industry, 40% of bottles are already from reuse and local initiatives are flourishing.
The Lille start-up Le Fourgon[7] manages the home collection and distribution of drinks, groceries or home products in around twenty French metropolises. The Nantes start-up Bout' à Bout'[8] will, for its part, create one of the largest bottle washing units in France with a capacity of 60 million bottles per year. But these models operate on the basis of instructions that the executive hesitates to generalize.
The move to national scale also requires that containers be standardized as in Germany for water, beers and soft drinks. If washing and reconditioning are too far from the end consumer, the model loses its ecological and economic interest. The eco-organization for household packaging Citeo has therefore joined forces with the glassmakers Verallia and O-I[9] to develop a handful of standard bottles and jars.
Promised for the end of the year, these containers took longer to design than anticipated and Citeo hopes to be able to market the first (two bottles of beer and wine and two jars) in the second half of 2024 “at the earliest”. Some major brands also do not want to hear about standards for their products whose containers they consider iconic... Reuse definitely needs unwavering political support.

FEVE CHOCOLATE
Have any of you heard of Feve? I never did til recently. I got an email from Dandelion chocolate about their bonbons. I have had Dandelion Chocolate may times before. They are a well known bean to bar chocolatier in San Francisco.
Feve uses their chocolate to make excellent bonbons. Fist the chocolate itself is vegan chocolate from Small batches in Ecuador crafted by Dandelion. For a moment let’s not talk about the flavors. The chocolate itself is excellent and robust in flavor. Feve manages to create an excellent balance between the flavors and the chocolate. The flavors are blended in the style of French chocolatiers. And while i did not get a chance to sample all their flavors I was able to have 7 and all were truly outstanding. As good as Recceuti my favorite American chocolatier and that is truly a large compliment. 
All the flavors tasted were robust without overwhelming the chocolate.They were equally appealing to look at as well as to taste. I look forward to trying them again in the future as the box of 21 disappeared in less than 1 week.

Epiphany: festival of the kings
It is officially 6th of Janvier in France. So I decided to write a little fic for this French holiday. Though I am not sure how to greet the French today. To celebrate this holiday, you eat a galette des rois with friends & family. 😊
It is a holiday and Marinette has brought over a Galette des Rois to share with her friends.
They decide for Markov to choose who gets what slice...technically he is the youngest.
The cake is delicious, of course. And the “lucky charm” feve is actually a mini Ladybug yoyo (minus the string).
The king is....Nathaniel!
He found the feve in his slice before it even entered the mouth, but details details.
Marinette herself crowns Nathaniel with her own customised metal crown.
For fun, they do decide to do whatever the new king commands.
First...yes...they definitely spread word about his comic and buy every issue. Adrien’s fanbase also followed their idol’s lead.
Second...they have to act out a scene from one of the comics. Marinette plays...Marinette. It’s a good thing she is already a character in the comic. Mylene is Ladybug and Kim is Chat. Ivan can’t be Chat Noir because they aren’t a couple in the comic...yet. Adrien has to play the damsel in distress.
Third, he wants them to try sketching a portrait of a classmate. Nathaniel will grade the drawings. Unsurprisingly, after Nathaniel, Marinette is the best artist. She drew Nathaniel in full royal regalia.
Then the party is over. Everyone bows and curtsies as Nathaniel makes his exit.
Before he leaves though, he gives a present to Marinette.
It turns out that the classmate Adrien chose to draw was Marinette.
