The sixth installment in the V/H/S series, V/H/S/85 (2023, Shudder) has been hailed as one of the most consistent, apparently by people who think the fact that all seven of the stories featured are shot on video tape, and two have the same director is some marker of consistency. Perhaps the strong segments moved the horror press so much they overlooked the weaker ones. It’s the same mixed bag as all the others, though the good parts are among the series’ best. Seven young people vacationing at a remote lake are picked off by a sniper in Mike P. Nelson’s “No Wake.” At first it seems just a showpiece for the effects team, but it ties into one of the later episodes for a better-than-expected payoff. Gigi Saul Guerrero’s “God of Death” is the weakest, as it follows a rescue team that, in the wake of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, discovers something evil underground. It takes a lot of jittery camera work and underlit scenes to get there, and you also have to stare at some unconvincing cave sets. Natasha Kermani’s “TKNOGD” seems more a sketch than a developed short, as a performance artist explores the newly developed virtual reality technology in search of God. With “Ambrosia,” Nelson depicts a family ritual that’s somewhat less than legal. Then Scott Derrickson, who also did THE BLACK PHONE (2021), delivers the strongest episode with “Deathdream.” Someone is sending a police detective (Freddy Rodriguez) videos of brutal murders before they happen. The videos, masterfully shot by Brett Juskiewicz, provide the overall film’s most terrifying moments, partly because they’re the most grounded in reality. There’s also strong work from James Ransone and Derrickson’s son, Dashiell Derrickson. This segment is so ripe with ideas it could easily serve as the basis for a feature. Throughout the running time, breaks between the short films are filled with clips from a reality TV program investigating a strange case of science gone wrong. That provides the film with a powerful finale in David Bruckner’s “Total Copy,” about a shape-changing boy discovered in the dessert and the scientists who make the mistake of trying to study him. So, snack during the opener, knit or do something equally distracting during the next two, and then settle in for better work at the end.
Because the CBS Bull/Benny Colón fandom may be only tiny and we may only have like 2 fanfics and half a GIF between us all—but goddammit we deserve content so I did a goddam THING.
