I did a post detailing my manga collection back in 2021, but it's grown a lot since then so I figured I'd make a new post! It was also a good time to do so because we're repainting my room and while there's usually a ton of anime merch in front of the books on my shelves, now it's all been packed up. The year 2023 has finally come to a close, and with it the art challenge where I draw every Varia member during their birthday month! I thought I should close off with pictures of them past present and future!

I want to thank everyone, whether you were here the whole time, were here intermittently, just for your faves, or even just for the tail end, the support was greatly appreciated! So the producers, caption writers, weatherman and presenter of Scottish TV News STV news all think that English actor Matthew Goode is the Scottish singer Fran Healy from the Scottish band Travis! Hoots mon!

The fact they don't look anything like each other and one has a Glaswegian accent and the other one a posh-ish English accent should perhaps have been a clue! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Another spanish fun fact related to Jojolands! This is about Paco Lovelantes, because "Paco" is a very common name in Spain! (and, I believe, in other spanish-speaking countries as well).

This character is called Paco, but wait... In reality, "Paco" per se is not a name, it's a hypocoristic/nickname of the name Francisco. And the most common way to nickname anyone called Francisco, is Fran, or Paco.

I also read that Lovelantes can be a reference to Cervantes, but I'm not sure about that...

So, the spanish fandom, in addition to the joke of "Jodio" meaning "fucked up", we have already unanimously decided that Paco Lovelantes was born in Albacete 🙂

Oh! And because Paco is a common nickname here, we already have some old memes involving a "Paco" in them.

In this side of the fandom, we have already become attached to Paco, and we're going to have a lot of fun reading and reacting to the chapter each month.

Edit [2023/02/20]: it turns out his surname is "Laburantes" instead of "Lovelantes". Laburantes is a colloquial form of saying workers, mostly used in countries such as Argentina and Uruguay. In these countries, to say "to work", they usually use the term "laburar" instead of "trabajar".

In Spain, we also have a colloquial way of calling work, "currar" as a verb, and "curro" as a noun. And workers would be "currantes". You know what's funny about all this? It happens that "Curro" is also a hypocoristic/nickname of Francisco, just like Paco lmao.

Every detail I learn about him makes me laugh so hard and love him as a character even more.

============= Review

The Familiar follows Fran, a familiar in the form of a crow, as she embarks on a quest to save her witch mistress who has succumb to an illness. Through a series of puzzles and exploration, Fran uncovers a secret plot and fights for her mistress's life.

Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.

I am a sucker for a good simple puzzle and a cute story, and this is no wonder this game made it to my top list of the SpringThing this year (well, it was already a favourite of mine while I was testing it). From its clean and simple aesthetic, the gorgeous pixel art for each "room", to its delightful characters, The Familiar is such a well rounded game.

Obviously, playing as a crow, you are limited in your abilities to help your bedridden mistress (it is a magical wonder you can get her a blanket). Still, the puzzles are constructed in a way that would be doable for a crow to solve (and you a smart little one). Cawing your way into town to get attention, pecking people to move them out of the way, or picking up and dropping objects in the right place, you manage to acquire all needed ingredients to save the witch.

And you are not alone in the process. Meeting first Hazel, a mouse familiar whose master perished not long before the game, who will tend to your mistress while you fly to fetch the ingredients (turns out, it's not the flu but a curse, whomps...). Then a trio of NPCs in town: Miroger, who's bother has died, Cecile, who needs help writing and sending a letter to her lover, and Frederik, who knows a good deal when he sees one. Each helps you getting one ingredient in exchange for a small favour. Finally, the evil wizzard's owl coming at the 11th hour to stop Fran.

But how does it end then? With a happy ending, for course! This is still a feel good story at the end of the day, one that makes you feel satisfied when the ending screen comes around. The day is saved, the mistress is healed, and you made some friends along the way.

What I really appreciated from it was how inclusive the game was for beginners (or terrible parser player like me), as you are limited to 5 verbs (TAKE, DROP, LOOK, PECK, CAW), there is an available tutorial to teach you the controls, and a thorough walkthrough is included in case one is stuck.

I wanted to give a special shoutout to the artwork, considering how long it took to make 30+ pixel art headers, many of those heavily detailed. Those truly gorgeous small pieces of art enhance the atmosphere of the setting, from the cozy home, to the luscious forest, and the different and vibrant parts of the industrialised city. If it all felt like a pixelized version of a Ghibli movie, that was on purpose (the author confirmed the reference).

Anyway, I'm going back to fly after that darn letter...

I smashed through my 2022 reading goal with ease, so I decided to change things up for 2023 and shift my new year's resolution to beating video games instead of reading books. I'm not really a gamer (at... all, really), but from owning a Steam account for over a decade, I've collected lots of things to play.

I'm setting my goal to 13 video games, which is roughly 12.5 more games than I normally play in a year.

LOUIS, MO (Feb. 27, 2023) — Schlafly Beer, the original, independent craft brewery in St. Louis, announces the highly anticipated return of its annual Stout & Oyster Festival on Friday, March 24, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, March 25, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the historic Schlafly Tap Room (2100 Locust St, St. Louis, MO 63103). Schlafly’s Stout & Oyster Festival is the largest of its kind in the Midwest. Schlafly flies in over 80,000 oysters overnight from both coasts, hosts 20 seasoned oyster shuckers to shuck oysters live all weekend, and brews more than 10 stouts exclusively for the popular festival. 

This year brings new stouts, stories from the star shuckers, live music, and more. Click here to view a short video to get a taste of the festival fun. Schlafly works directly with oyster farmers, chefs, and more from across North America who attend the festival as the “star shuckers,” shucking oysters on-site all weekend. “Stout & Oyster Festival brings the community together to celebrate great beer paired with fresh oysters. It’s a special time for us, and a tradition that we look forward to every year,” says CEO Fran Caradonna. “No one else in the Midwest has an oyster festival of this magnitude, and stouts and oysters are a natural pairing. We are so proud to have this event as a Schlafly staple.”  

The talented Schlafly brewing team will offer nine new stouts, available in the signature “tasting taco” (see below), as well as rotating specialty stouts throughout the festival such as: Tabasco Stout, Horseradish Stout, Barrel-Aged Imperial Beast Stout, English Breakfast Tea Stout, Irish Breakfast Cream Stout, Orange Vanilla Stout, Blueberry Vanilla Stout, Dirty Chai Stout, Gingersnap Stout, and more. Other Schlafly favorite beers will also be available, including White Lager, Just a Bit Hazy IPA, Pale Ale, Raspberry Hefeweizen, and more. Schlafly will also have a special edition Oyster Stout to commemorate the festival.

East Coast and West Coast shuckers will each offer an array of raw oyster varieties from their home coast at raw bars, both inside of the Schlafly Tap Room and outside in the “Shuckerdome”. Additionally, Fried Oysters, Oysters Rockefeller, and Oyster Chowder will be available. The Tap Room’s full menu will be available inside the restaurant.

In addition to the cast of “star shuckers,” Schlafly’s Stout & Oyster Festival offers a unique atmosphere with live music for the weekend. The full band schedule is as follows:
