sam/bucky for the ship/don't ship?

oh shit i’m panicking because the thing is,,,, the thing is,,,,,, I’m a rabid Stucky shipper, and so Sambucky is sort of hard to articulate for me? I think I ship it, but either as an ot3 with Steve or as sort of a... second-choice multiship, which sounds unfair when I say it out loud. But it’s more like, Stucky is not something I’m gonna get much more content for from canon, and I am getting this content, so I’ve chosen to lean in and enjoy the ride :’)

1. What made you ship it? I’ve seen the potential for it since the movies, but obviously TFATWS is a fucking goldmine of shippy moments. It’s about the banter, and the chemistry that Anthony & Sebastian have with each other! I would have killed a man to have a show like this with Steve in it as well -- all the hours of content digging into these two and their character arcs.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship? As usual, it’s the contrasting and complementary personalities for me. The Dynamic strikes again!

I think Sam is massively underrated in the Marvel fandom (u know why) despite the fact he displays a level of emotional intelligence none of the other Avengers can even come CLOSE to? He is compassionate and kind and he is really good at connecting with people. He’s one of Steve’s closest friends because he looked at him and saw Steve, not Cap. A soldier with trauma, which is something Sam is absolutely stellar at dealing with. (I loved hearing this re-iterated in TFATWS 1x04. As Bucky said, “he knows what he’s doing.”) He’s perceptive and funny and loyal, and I think he makes a fucking perfect new Cap because like Steve, his true superpowers aren’t actually anything to do with physical ability. It’s about what he believes in and how he moves through the world. The way he uplifts people by being around them. Like Steve, knowing him makes you a better person. That’s the thing I love about Captain America.

And Bucky, well, he’s an Absolute Nightmare in need of a Sweaterboy. The false antagonism between them is hilarious, but the truth is it’s enemies-to-lovers vibes because they know and trust each other already. Bucky is deeply traumatized, but Sam, like I said, knows how to deal with trauma. They don’t have the kind of lifelong connection that Stucky have, but what they do have is being exactly the right kind of person for each other considering where they are right now. Sam isn’t afraid of Bucky even when he maybe should be, and that’s something Bucky needs like oxygen, in a world where he doesn’t even feel safe in his own mind. As long as Sam continues to see and respect the person Bucky really is, Bucky continues to make progress in healing. (And the reverse is true: every time someone treats Bucky like an asset or an object, he loses a little bit of mental ground, and it’s so painful to watch.)

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Hmm I’m pretty new to like, actively shipping them, so I’m not sure what’d be unpopular except for the fact that like. Everyone likes to fall over themselves for the broken white boy and I think Sam gets dismissed and ignored -- again, you know why. He’s literally half of the show, arguably the more important half. He has his own character arc outside of being Bucky’s therapy, and he deserves to be Cap because he’s the best choice for the job. I can’t speak to the discussion of racism in the show and I won’t try to, but I think that Sam is much more complex and has a lot more story going on than some people seem to see. Like, you can hear the whistling as half of the show goes flying over their heads and they go back to giffing Zemo and Bucky and whatever the fuck. Ugh.

A couple of months ago I did a different meme with a similar question and I think I’m going to cop out and answer the same way again with my very first SC fic: Try and Catch the Wind. Basically, I have written so many damn things and also I’m really bad at being objective about my writing, but I found such a lovely community by dipping my toes into this fandom, so I’m eternally grateful to it 🥰
